Do we even want Moru to try his curse-breaking on our men? It is dangerous, we can loose them.

This curse-breaking affair left a bitter feeling. We gave unique magical ingredient, but only half of our men freed from curse. I understand that we did nothing wrong, but... ugh.

I get where you are coming from, but you have to keep in mind these people are coming from a very different culture to the locals, their faith is one of the few things other than their memories which connects them to home. Even so you guys could have chosen to go through with it and they likely would have done it, though not without resentment.

Can we still add the buying of dogs and a trainer in this vote?

[X] Goldfish
- [x] get a couple of hunting dogs with strong backs as well as a trainer

I mean you could maybe ask the people you leave behind to buy stuff, but that would mean you would have to leave them a budget and then deal with whatever decision they made in your absence. Probably not worth it at this point, you can take on hirelings when you come back.

I understand this, that's why I specified "We did nothing wrong".
It's simply a situation where right choices feels unpleasant.

  • [X] Guard Force/Warrior Academy
    -[X] Hirelings
    --[X] Shore Sworn (x20): 500 gold
    --[X] House Koire Guards (x10): 1 Favor
    -[X] Custodians
--[X] Hugh the Elder and Henri Glaser, an experienced spearman and archer, respectively, will remain in Wayfarer's Respite along with Neios and his two guards. They will also be able to look after the horses we leave behind, including the two foals and their mothers who will be nursing them for the next several months. It will give Henri a chance to pick which foal he wishes to replace the adult horse we gifted to King Ansefu previously.
--[X] In addition to representing our interests while we are away, Hugh and Henri, with assistance from Neios and his men, will work with any of the hired Shore Sworn who wish to learn to retrain into Warriors, focusing on the spear or bow depending on their natural abilities and preferences. Any Koire guards who wish to participate are also welcome to continue broadening their skills.
--[X] We will explain to the Shore Sworn that we might also be interested in hiring them on in a full time capacity, if any are interested in long term employment away from their villages, as Wayfarer's Respite will need guards and other attendants in the future. While employed by us, their room and board will be covered, of course, and equipment will be provided for them, so they would be free to save their pay or send it back home to their families.

Arc 11 Post 24: A Herald on the Threshold
A Herald on the Threshold

Day of the Dead 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

The night is dark, the candle burns low upon the mantelpiece casting long shadows from the sword and shield set just beside them, ready for the morn, and you should be abed. The torch has been passed and what words of wisdom you had to say to Hugh and Henri had been said. The fisher folk had come as you had bid them, for a warm hearth in winter is not to be discounted, much less one that pays good silver. Soon these halls will echo more with the sound of the Engur tongue, spoken in the dialects of the city and the shore, than with the words of lost Normandy. Already you had checked the barracks to be sure that there is no trouble in the passing of the guard, you had checked with Inge to ensure that none of her things are left behind and you had even asked Zaia if he had packed away all the potions and philters you would not be leaving for the keep, earning yourself a glare for meddling.

You find yourself looking at the door to the bedroom with reluctance and you wonder at yourself for it. Is it fear of battle and peril, the memory of Anjo-oru haunting your dreams? Do I think so little of those whom I have bid to stay and guard the keep?

It is none of those things you realize, looking out over the sea washed in moonlight. A year ago this night the storm had struck, tearing you from your world and into this one. Part of you wonders if you would again be pulled hence back to where you belong and un your heart you hope for it... and you dread it. The year had not passed you by untouched, you had seen much and learned much, about yourself as much as about the world. If you should now return by God's grace, as a man claiming to have been stolen by the fairies and taken under the hollow hills, what place would there be for you, forever regretting what you had left behind?

On steps as quiet as you can make them you look in on Inge again. She is sleeping peacefully, her dreams untroubled by vision or dark portent. So to should I be, you think to yourself, a touch embarrassed at the childish fancy that had seen you linger thus. The hand of Providence, if it should move, is constrained not by the passing of the year anymore than the passing of the day, all you are doing is stealing your own sleep away and so at last you seek your bed... just as a hurried messenger finds you.

"Come quick, there is spirit herald in courtyard," Wanderer says urgently.

***

Antonio and Inge are already in the courtyard waiting when you arrive, and before them an odd guest stands. It first it seems a child, for they are of a height with Inge, perhaps a little taller, but as you look closer at the fine boned face under the grey spun hood you see it is a woman and no girl. Hard of eye and cheek she is as the people of Orinilu are for the most part, though her features, marked with symbols you cannot guess the meaning of, seem to have been carved with a finer chisel than those of man are, a manner you had seen but once before on Lirman. Fey she is, and by her smile she has marked the sudden wariness in your manner and found it amusing. Looking over the rest of her accoutrements you note she does not seem to be a warrior, bearing instead a soft of white tunic with pointed shoulders like the wings of birds and matching pants that fit smugly to the leg, with not a speck of dirt on any of them you note.

"Hail, Shade-Slayer, bearer of the Sword Twice Forged," she greets you. "I am Fechin of the Court of the Great Wheel, those that men call tinkers and workers of artifice. Long has it been since such a curious band as this found its way to the Silvered Shore and many are there who would learn more of you for the wind from the north says much but hides much more. The tongues of the city are loud and raucous, but its ears are often filled all with wax that would be better used to daub the gears of the Great Wheel."

"Your pardon, my lady, but none of us are greatly skilled in speaking the tongue of this land," Antonio interjects. "Pray speak in simpler guise that we may understand each other plainly. What is the Court of he Great Wheel and who rules it, and whence is the Silver Shore for I have not heard of the lands under the dominion of Orinilu called such?"

"You are wise, mortal, but tales are not spoken unprompted, no teaching given without cost else all would lose their value as golden coins if in a pile tall as the mountains gathered would be worth no more than pebbles." The messenger gives an impish smile. "But fret not for you now possess, if rumor be true, a thing most precious to the Lady who sent me for which many answers would be given, an egg of stone set down in elder days."

As soon as the word 'egg' had passed her lips Antonio throws you a troubled look. Should you reveal that you do not have it anymore, and if so who you had given it to?

What do you reply?

[] Explain that you no longer have the egg
-[] And reveal who has it
-[] Do not reveal who has it

[] Ask Fechin what her Lady wants the egg for

[] Write in

OOC: A bit of a character moment... and then the plot thickens.

And here's the part where I predicted I would regret us trading the stone egg, though we got here much sooner than I was expecting.

Well, I don't see much point in trying to obfuscate the truth here. We don't have the egg any longer and lying about who does is not going to do us any favors. Hopefully this doesn't sour our potential relationship with the Court of Gears.

-[X] And reveal who has it and why we traded it to them

BTW, @DragonParadox, it looks like you ran the tally to only look at votes after yesterday's interlude. It didn't affect anything this time except for showing an incorrect number of votes, but I seem to recall a couple times back in ASWAH days where it lead to the wrong plan being used, then stuff having to be corrected. Not a big deal, just seemed like a good example to use as a reminder.

Oops, sorry about that. I'll be more careful about that in the future

I'm amazed the Fey are coming to us, and not vice versa. They must really want that egg.

Hopefully they don't do something rash to get it.

First come, first served unless there was another curse breaker on offer but those things usually have a price that's more than just coinage.

I really hope this doesn't ruin things for us with the Tinker Fey.

I kinda had my hopes set on getting a friendly Bulubar or two as employees, if we could manage it. Even without that bit of fun, Antonio traded what could have been a very nice monetary reward from the Fire Spirit for a positive introduction to the Court of Gears. Would suck to lose that.
