Age of Ice and Blood: A Pathfinder System Heroic Fantasy Quest

Just plain old Flaming would almost certainly make Durendal a minor artifact rather than probably being one. For whatever reason, Flaming normally requires a 10th caster level to add to a magic weapon, while Frost and Shocking only need 5th or 7th (can't recall which). Combine that with its already existing Keen ability, which also requires a caster level of 10, and Durendal is a weapon just completely beyond the bounds of mortal crafting.

😎

But Flaming Burst goes so well with Keen, though!

I will say this much since Zaia will be able to guess it after what he has just done there, it is possible to boost your CL briefly by ritual magic in the moment of actually crafting something, so things are not quite as limited crafting wise as the raw mechanics might indicate, though of course ritual magic is not cheap or risk free... unless you stumble into a Transgressor of Boundaries Ritual without meaning to *grumble, grumble* :V

Masterful Moment

Eighteenth Day of Ikomi-hamba (Ikomi Descendant) 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

The walls were tall and thick and plastered white, not to keep out the snow and chill, but to keep in the powers which might in this hall be invoked. It was a circle a dozen paces across, because for of all the shapes that the mind of man had conjured it was the circle that was the most sublime and yet the one which escaped the canon of Pythagorean understanding, with even Archimedes of Syracuse admitting with uncommon humility that his calculation was mere approximation. Yet the old man insisted that the circle was as close to that shape as the cunning of his mind could dream and the craft of Orinilu the Fair could make manifest.

Circles of crystal upon the sky, where wander the planets bright and all the visible worlds in Spheres of Being were held, so said the books written by a dozen quills and in the hand of a madman kept. Thus all existence was in circles writ and in this narrow hall of stone and wood it was reflected that burning hope and dread desire of all mankind to be the petty demiurge of their own small makings.

Power bubbled from his cauldron with the breath of heavy fumes, of slumber, perchance of death, blood seeped between the broken scales still ruby red as though the beast had just been slain rather than laying in the depths of the hold for three full moonturns and more. A dragon's blood scorns the passage of the years and through it passes corrupted.

With steady hands, accustomed to the risk of vitriol and noxious humors, Zaia of Alexandria poured it into vials, mixing in shavings of gold and seeds of pepper that stings like fire and does not burn. With wine-numbed lips he spoke the words of power and command that would ignite within the secret fire. Use thou the tongue of thine soul and keep it in the deepest secret of thine heart, that was the advice that Moru, servant of Inoko, had given him, adding that even when two magicians started from the same tongue they would soon part ways in the making of their particular magic, like branches of a tree dividing so that their leaves may drink in the light above.

For Zaia it was his mother tongue that no other soul upon all the world spoke, not even his fellow travelers upon strange currents. It was the tongue of saints and martyrs, of scholars and mystics, going back how far even Zaia did not know save that when the Father of History laid down his first account the land on the banks of the Nile was already old beyond his reckoning.

With these words and by these signs, half of one world and half of the other, did the scholar lay supple leather about the hilt of the sword Durendal and of the black tipped spear which had laid low the beast as day passed into twilight, though he had not meant it so. In halls new raised that which was ancient passed to new purpose by one who had already crossed the greatest of all borders.

In the depths of the world, far beyond the reach of his new awakened sight, felt only in the hand and the heart, something stirred. Zaia of Alexandria knew that he had in this moment a chance to shape more than leather onto steel and bronze.

By a combination of circumstance, skill and sheer good fortune in his first act of arcane crafting Zaia of Alexandria has invoked a deeper magic in one of the weapons he was bending his mind upon.

Which is the weapon?

OOC: You may be wondering why this is an interlude... you may also be wondering why the hell an alchemist with no crafting feats gets a free crafting. Well he only had two rolls to make since with the wine he auto-succeeded the alchemy. He rolled this... and this. That is not a nat 100, that is the equivalent of rolling 400 on a d400. So there you go, choose which one he accidentally magickes harder like a dwarf fortress dorf in a fey mood.
Perhaps it should be "uncorrupted" here?

I like this more, the spear is only magical because of the dragon, so it's only fair that the rest of the dragon-magic goes into it.

Tom's spear is great and I'm glad he has it, but I want the upgrade for Roland, since he's the MC, plus I think Flaming will be better for him as opposed to whatever Tom gets.

Also, there is a certain gravitas that comes with a dude drawing a flaming sword. It's a classic for a reason.

Can this be Bloodsong?
Price +1 bonus; Slot none; CL 6th; Weight —; Aura moderate transmutation

This special ability can be placed only on slashing or piercing melee weapons. While the wielder benefits from a raging song performance (whether her own or from an ally), this weapon gains the keen weapon special ability. If the wearer confirms a critical hit while under the effects of a raging song, she gains 1d10 temporary hit points that last until they're reduced to 0 or the raging song ends, whichever comes first. If the weapon's critical multiplier is ×3, add 2d10 temporary hit points instead; if the multiplier is ×4, add 3d10 temporary hit points instead. While its powers are active, the weapon vibrates and makes a barely audible hum that rises to a shriek of triumph when it confirms a critical hit.

Yeah, not to mention there won't be a chance like this again for a very long time, if ever.

We shouldn't miss this chance to potentially upgrade Roland's sword.

I am really not certain what to choose. On the first hand, it's good to strenchen PC. On the second hand, synergy with Tom's dragon-spear is tempting. On the third hand, warning is unsettling...

I still wish we'd get upgrade for Roland's sword. Flaming is just better mechanically and cooler looking by fluff then everything we've surmised is possible for the spear, and Roland is the better fighter compared to Tom, and better fighter should have better weapon for the maximum effect.

Moreover, because Roland is the leader and better fighter, in general it's more likely for him to fight and more likely for him to fight one-on-one, like it was when we dueled Eki Teranoa in a trial by combat, and that's another reason he should have the best weapon.

And the idea that the spear is better suited because of some connection through the dragon doesn't ring true to me, it was incidental that the upgrade was procced while Zaia was working on dragonskin grips, the actual source of the magical crafting upgrade is ritual magic reaching to the deep magic of the world, nothing dragon-related:
In the depths of the world, far beyond the reach of his new awakened sight, felt only in the hand and the heart, something stirred.

Oathkeeper...

Hurts to be reminded of the old quest with getting another.

Let the legend of the Spear of Destiny begin. Human, Mann, Fairfolk, and Otterkin will wield it's devastating power over time, but its story starts here.

Though it is selfish, we are both the MC and the company's champion.
Personally I do like spears, but we are not the lancer here.

This more than anything else is the best argument for choosing Roland. He gets in the most dangerous fights, consistently targets the most dangerous enemies, and thus needs the most effective weapon we can manage for him.

Also, if/when we sail south to the lands where Inoko is a common and popular god, Roland's Flaming sword, enchanted by a fire spirit akin to a demigod and further enhanced by power from the burning core of the world, may very well be a key that opens a lot of doors for us.

Man, that spear is tempting. Still, if it's song is dark I would rather not tap to deep. Plus it will make Tom even more self concious to have a better weapon then his lord.
