Which reminds me, if we are out adventuring with our men, we need to leave guards as well as a lieutenant to Tom... @DragonParadox has Tom identified a corporal that will be his second while he's gone with us?

@DragonParadox, can we agree with House Koire to guard our place while we are gone, or is it not feasible?

Another question, what is Inge doing? can she brew some potions?

He wont mind if we leave him to guard the fort while we are away? Also how many men would he need to guard the place?
  1. He will not no. Garrison duty it expected of a knight's men at arms after all
  2. That is up to you guys, to decide. Normally a knight with a keep this size would not even be able to afford the 15 men at arms you guys have as part of the Fellowship

  1. You could, but that would be at the cost of the favor you just earned with them training those same men at arms
  2. Inge is going to be helping with the dragon. Otherwise she has decided she wants to learn how to throw a knife since she is aware that she could run out of spells, but does not fancy trying to stab someone close up

So how do we get the most use out of the dragon corpse without breaking bank more than we have.

@DragonParadox curious, how dragon rotted much at all after so long being dead? Can we preserve it for possible future use?

@DragonParadox, this
Net-user and Archer Men-at0Arms gain 1/4 progress in Medium Armor proficiency
still doesn't look right, the vote was to train everyone except Archers:
[X] Train them in a form of armor
-[X] Train the melee Armsmen in Medium Armor.

[X] Train them in a form of armor
-[X] Train the Net Armsmen in Medium Armor.

[X] Train them in a form of armor
-[X] Train the Knickut in Light Armor

Armor for everyone! Except archers.
Shouldn't it be "Spearmen and Net-wielders gain 1/4 progress in Medium Armor proficiency"?

The dragon looks as fresh as when you killed it and it probably has something to do with the deep magic of dragons. Esha calls them 'the bones of the earth' and they are known for not dying but sleeping eternally in the deep places of the world. Perhaps they keep some of that power in death also

Right, fixed.

Everything in Dragoncrafting is one-use and situational except the grips. Among the one-use and situational items only the blood for negative level removal is really good, and we are not so good with money right now, so I think just the grips and the blood.

[X] Grips and blood
-[X] 2 Dragonskin Grips for Roland's sword and Tom's spear, 2x125 gp
-[X] 5 Dragon's Blood vials, 5x60 gp
-[X] 550 gp total

If we'll need anything else, we can craft it later.

@DragonParadox, mechanical question.

Crafting Dragonskin Grips requires DC 15 Craft (bows or weapons) check, and I assumed that Zaia can do it while not having the relevant skill because Craft is not trained only compared to e.g. Profession.

But doesn't that mean that mechanically, with Masterwork Smithing and Alchemy Tools (+2 to relevant rolls) and Books on Alchemy and Metallurgy (+3 to Craft Alchemy and all Metal Craft skills as long as one is in a position to reference the tomes), with +4 Int bonus, with +5 luck bonus from Crafter's Fortune and taking 10 for a total roll of 24 Zaia can craft masterwork (DC 20) armor (DC 10 + armor's AC) and weapons (max DC 18), as specified here?

It seemed surprising to me, but then most of it is magic (Crafter's Fortune) and books and tools, so on second thought it looks alright.

Can you clarify if it would be possible?

You cannot really craft without being trained in the skill normally but since this is so esoteric it is not like knowing how to tan goat's skin is going to help much with the un-rotting dragon's scale he is going to use his craft alchemy at a -10 which still leaves him at +8 before magical bonuses.

@DragonParadox, when Zaia is through harvesting the Dragon corpse for those materials we can make use of, what are we going to do with the rest of it? Just because we can't make use of it doesn't mean others can't.

The meat, bones, hides and scales, all seem like they would be valuable to someone. Do we have any idea what the monetary value on the remainder would be, or is that something we'll need to investigate?

He intends to keep the rest of it, and yeah it is too strange to have a set market value. The best idea Antonio has is to set up an auction

It's not cheap and I would like to avoid the cost for now, but producing at least one vial of the new Nightshade's Kiss perfume could be well worth the expense. We can save the musk to produce another one later, if necessary

+2d2 HD being affected by Esha's Sleep spell doesn't seem like a lot, but that increases the effectiveness of her spell by a lot. It would go from being able to affect just 4 HD, not really bad for a 1st level spell but not great either once you start running into more experienced enemies, to affecting a minimum of 6 HD, which is basically any Human we will run into and most other relevant enemies, too. The increase in HD also makes it much more likely to be able to affect multiple targets. Since we're planning to return to Apuku in the Spring to help with the assault on Korman, crafting the perfume should be considered another bit of preparation for the expected conflict.

[X] Flesh, Blood, and...naptime
-[X] Dragonskin Grip: x2 (125 gold each)
-[X] Vial of Alchemically treated Dragon's Blood: x5 (60 gold each)
-[X] Vial of Nightshade's Kiss Perfume: x1 (150 gold)
-[X] Total: 700 gold

Sweat and Blood

Seventeenth Day of Ikomi-hamba (Ikomi Descendant) 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

Over the next ten days, as the foundations for the motte are leveled, the timber is cut and the laborers are brought in from the city, your men split their time between lending their backs to the work and learning how to make use of the Anwa coats Isele and his ilk had so 'graciously' donated to the Fellowship of Saint Nicholas. As for you, well it could be said you help them train, hand out advice, rebukes and praise with an even and lordly hand... so long as the saying was done by some chronicler working in the far off halcyon future within a warm keep with perhaps a fresh baked pie and honey and milk on the side. Here and now, in the frozen muddy and miserable present, you feel like you spend the better part of each day cursing all the limbs of a man's body and biting your tongue against the urge to blaspheme.

Having never worn one of those damned coats in your life you are not sure precisely how one is supposed to move in them, but you are quite sure that there should be less in the way of falling on your ass from over-balancing. The men sweat and grumble and run through the damn woods when they are not put to the task of carrying rocks still in 'that damn devil's coat', as they had come to be called.

Net-users and Spearmen Men-at-Arms gain 1/4 progress in Medium Armor proficiency

Perhaps unsurprisingly you have a lot more luck in training Wanderer how to move and fight in Tam's old chain shirt, you had actually fought in chain over a padded coat before and don't have to do the learning right along with the people you are training. Though you have to give the Knikut warrior his due, he takes to the notion of armor with the fervor of the newly converted. His own people do use stiff leather and hide to make coats and cloaks, but warriors rarely make use of them in raids as they are awkward to move in, more concerned with keeping out the cold and the snow than the points of spears.

Wanderer gains 3/4 Progress in Light Armor proficiency

Speaking of spears, you had left much of the training of House Koire's armsmen to Tom, secure in the knowledge that if anyone can grind through the task properly it is the man who had lead Verley's men-at-arms for the last decade. Alas that being bold and stubborn in the face of a hard day's fighting does not make up for the lack of a common language and the poor quality of one's recruits.

"Babes torn from their mother's teat, they are!" Tom had exclaimed one evening, then with a look towards Inge who was trying to teach herself how to throw knives at tree stumps he adds with marked disgust: "Insult to babes, that is! Two left feet and a head full of straw, they have."

He is not entirely wrong, of course. You would judge that between the dozen men you had been asked to train in the ways of war three have seen a score years and six were yet four and ten. It is admittedly a touch amusing to see Nico or Luc play the grizzled veterans, though you imagine it would be less so if you actually had to spend six hours out of every day on spear and shield drill.

Koire Spearmen gain 1/4 Progress in Warrior training

"Keep steady maggots! Shields locked or you might as well gut the man beside you yourself and spare the enemy the work!"

The last part was more than a hollow threat. Knowing that Inge could heal any wound that did not kill a man outright or take off a limb Tom's training was so bloody as to be counted mad on the green hills of Verley, and perhaps a little mad here as well.

"Do you think he'd ever explained what a maggot is, or will they think all those are terms of endearment?" Antonio asks, motioning out the window of your newly built lower keep from where you had all moved your furs to at least be out of the cold and the wet and be spared the rocking of the ship in the rough weather.

"Between the shouting and the blood I think they get the gist of it," you say unsmiling. Maybe you should talk to Tom about how he is training them...

"I hear Zaia's ready to fire up the cauldron and take out the knives and carve up the dragon," your friend continues, cutting off your thought. "What do you think he aught to make of it?" And what is it going to cost us, the tone could not have been clearer in expressing. Antonio might not have spent long reading through the compendium that Inge had dictated to Zaia, but he is all too aware of the price of herbs and spices, especially in winter and in the midst of a city at war.

What does Zaia make from the dragon corpse?

Dragon Size: Large
General Rules: Dragoncrafting

Special Notes:
Grip cost halved
Perfume Added:
Nightshade's Kiss: Brewed from the musk of a creature long trapped in the dreaming world this concoction allows a mage to greatly enhance the effects of spells of slumber. Add 2d2 HD to the cap creatures affected by a sleep spell. Cost 150 gp/dose.

OOC: You guys did not get lucky this time around, though this was not really dangerous or anything, it just means you will take longer to do it than might otherwise be the case. Rollz is down right now so I had to use another site. Here is a pic of the results since the site will not save them otherwise.
Shouldn't it be "to where you had moved all you furs" here?

Actually, @DragonParadox, given that Marcella's development started when she ate the rat king and acquired its hunger, did she get anything from pirates slain on her deck? Isele by himself should have been a large sacrifice, and there were others.

Any chance Marcella became more aware, conscious, intelligent? Went further in her development?

Not that anyone has noticed, I mean the ship is being more active, but that might just be her learning and being curious rather than gaining something from the blood in particular. Think of the Marcella as being 'pleasantly haunted'. How would you be able to tell what the (mostly) subtle supernatural presence can do as opposed to what it can do?
