Ace Attorney Investigations: Ema Skye: Turnabout of the Stars (Kirby/Ace Attorney Quest)

The Explosive Turnabout: Beginning (15/29)
[X] Trustworthy king? + The lone badge

+
>Connect

Ema
(Something weird is going on with King Dedede, no doubt about it... Which throws the credibility of his story into question, too.)

(What's more, Chief Bookem is the only police officer here in Cappy Town. And according to him, the crime rate is so low, he spends more of his time directing traffic than catching crooks.)

(So why am I doubting King Dedede's story about his sticky-handed, destructive criminal? Perhaps it's because if there was indeed such a guy around town, Chief Bookem would be out there trying to catch him instead of catching z's on his porch.
(Why would a dedicated cop let a criminal like that run free? Unless... Is there even a criminal like that to begin with?)

Hypothesis: Does the criminal exist?

[X] Connect: The Toy Store & Trustworthy King?

+
>Connect

Ema
(This bit about the toy store keeps nagging at me... If Kirby is indeed King Dedede's criminal, why would he play with toys, then turn around and commit crimes?)

(Well, I suppose he could be a juvenile delinquent, but then why would he be allowed to eat leftovers from the restaurant and grocery store?)

(One minute he's a hero, the next he's a crook... It's almost like I'm hearing a story about two different people!)

Hypothesis: Hero or heel?

[X] Connect The Lone Badge and King V/S Chief

+
>Connect

Ema
(I can't ignore the friction between Chief Bookem and King Dedede. These two different accounts make that fact clear.)

(If that is indeed the case...why did the King let me meet the Chief? He must have known this would happen!)

(Was he depending on me to spur Chief Bookem into action? That would make sense...if he was anyone else but the King of Dream Land.)

(If he has the kind of power to apply pressure on the police, why am I here doing his dirty work?)

Hypothesis: Sending Ema

Ema
(Some of these hypotheses aren't meshing all that well... Is it because they share a common root? I don't think I could keep track of all of these...)

(*sigh* Looks like I'm gonna have to let a couple of these go. Let's see...)

[] Discard hypothesis
-[] Hypothesis: Does the criminal exist?
-[] Hypothesis: Hero or heel?
-[] Hypothesis: Sending Ema
[] Continue connecting thoughts (Write-in)

Logic in Ace Attorney works by fusing two Logic nuggets together to make a new thought at the cost of the original pair. When a thought is linked to multiple Hypotheses, Ema might have issues keeping her facts straight later on.

So it's best in the long-term to keep things organized and make sure no new idea shares a common "parent" idea.

...Or is it...?

Oh...

We're using the Sherlock video game logic? You can built-up your case with valid logic, but still have the wrong solution?

Not necessarily wrong, but it would lead us down a different path nonetheless. A good-end resolution to the case might still be possible.

Or perhaps, we unlock "Abstract Thought"... Or we make Ema's mind blow a fuse.

Okay.

[X] Discard hypothesis
-[X] Hypothesis: Sending Ema

I'm saying we should discard this one because the answer is in another logic piece.

Laws between worlds. As we saw when we unlocked it, Dedede was hesitant about saying he could keep us around if we didn't do the job. He can't really contain us without (perhaps) committing some sort of crime. Therefore I think the reason he allowed us to come here was because he didn't have a different choice.

So I think this is the least useful hypothesis for us.

Ah, thank you for reminding me...

Hypotheses are incomplete compared to good ol' Logic nuggets, and as such, cannot be Connected to other thoughts in their current state. It is only when we have Ema stick to and keep her Hypotheses that they evolve into full-fledged ideas (and receive their own icons).

Basically, if a thought doesn't have a corresponding image, assume you can't connect it to anything yet.

I'll go and add questions about Logic to the FAQs on the progenitor post. because alliteration

I have a different theory on how to go about all this if we were to do this by the Ace Attorney method:

Hypothesis: Does the criminal exist?
Hypothesis: Hero or heel?
Hypothesis: Sending Ema

Because even if we threw out the hypothesis "Sending Ema" , there'd still be the problem of the hypothesis "Does the criminal exist" conflicting with "Hero or heel?" due to both sharing the Logic piece "Trustworthy king?"

Meanwhile, if we threw out "Does the criminal exist?" , I can see a path to using up all the logic pieces up to this point at once. It'd go like this:

Hypothesis: Hero or heel? ---> Resolved or New Logic by itself
Hypothesis: Sending Ema ---> New Logic A

Then we connect the following two logic pieces:

Laws between worlds + Doctorate of what? ----> Hypothesis: "Adopted Laws" ---> Forms into New Logic B

New Logic B would help Ema realize how Earth's laws had been transferred to Popstar: Due to interstellar travel, the inhabitants of Popstar must've traveled to Earth one time and adopted their own from Earth's.

Now here's where it gets interesting. We connect the new two ideas together!

Sending Ema + Adopted Laws =

Given that the laws on Popstar are basically the same as Earth's laws, we can extrapolate as to why King Dedede cannot simply get Kirby arrested: Even he is subject to the laws that govern "his" kingdom, and proper protocol has to be followed in arresting a suspect to a crime. And because Dedede believes that Chief Bookem is too soft in doing his job, His Majesty has taken it upon himself to acquire the services of a detective from elsewhere, one he believes will actually do the job that Bookem is unable to do. Enter one Ema Skye from Los Angeles, California....of Earth. She's essentially the penguin's patsy in trying to lock up Cappy Town's hero once and for all (but she's unaware of that).

I can get behind your method. I'll format that into votes, so that we could perhaps skip voting on each step in turn:

[X] Discard Hypothesis: Does the criminal exist?
-[X] Accept Hypothesis: Hero or Heel? & Sending Ema
--[X] Connect: Laws between worlds + Doctorate of what? => Hypothesis A (Pending "Adopted Laws")
---[X] If valid, accept Hypothesis A as Logic A
----[X] Connect: Sending Ema & Logic A => Hypothesis B (Pending "Dedede's Dirty Work")
-----[X] If valid, accept Hypothesis B as Logic B
------[X] Connect: Hero or Heel? & Logic B => Hypothesis C (Pending "Dedede's Motivation")
-------[X] If valid, EUREKA!

-------[X] If valid, EUREKA!

Voting ends at 9 PM CST today.

In addtion, I have an appended version of the Logic voting process!
  • When it comes to Connecting thoughts, each vote will count as an action.
  • However, we go back to majority vote when it's time to drop Hypotheses.
    • This applies ONLY to dropping Hypotheses; any other part of the vote still falls under riot-voting rules.
Otherwise, we'd be deleting potential Logic nuggets left and right...which would probably be a bad thing. I'll be sure to add this to the first post as well for future reference.

Apologies for the wait. Had a pretty busy weekend.

[X] Discard Hypothesis: Does the criminal exist?

>Forget Does the criminal exist?

1, 2, 3......Ta-daaa!
Forgot Does the criminal exist?

Ema
(...And just like that, I feel better already!)

-[X] Accept Hypothesis: Hero or Heel? & Sending Ema

>Accept Hero or heel?

Ema
(Two different accounts of the same person...)
(But which portrayal is more accurate? The hometown hero, or the local crook?)

"Hero or heel?" added to Logic.

Ema
(I wonder if I should show King Dedede's account to the Chief...)

>Accept Sending Ema

Ema
Chief Bookem, how would you describe your relationship with King Dedede?

Chief Bookem
It's not the best, I'm afraid. He's tried to force me out of this job more than a few times over the years...

Ema
What?! Can you tell me more?

Chief Bookem
Usually it's been over my job performance and how it doesn't meet his standards...

Ema
He must be more strict than I gave him credit for...

Chief Bookem
There was one time where he got really mad because I indirectly caused a traffic accident by falling asleep on the job...

Ema
You...fell asleep? Directing traffic?

Chief Bookem
Hey, give me a break! I'm not exactly a spring chicken anymore! Standing out there gets tiring after a while...

Ema
(King Dedede might have a point, but that doesn't exactly disprove the fact that I'm the one talking to Chief Bookem instead of him.)

"Sending Ema" added to Logic.

--[X] Connect: Laws between worlds + Doctorate of what? => Hypothesis A (Pending "Adopted Laws")
---[X] If valid, accept Hypothesis A as Logic A

>Connect

Ema
(It's interesting that the laws here in Dream Land are so similar to how they are back home...)

(If Dr. Escargoon can maintain a ship capable of traveling between planets, it's possible Earth had received a visit from these guys before they came to find me...)

(Perhaps that's why the two sets of laws match so well... They must have been "borrowed" from my world!)

(Of course, it's just a theory...I'd need to take a look at Dream Land's laws to know for sure.)

>Accept

"Adopted laws" added to Logic.

Split.

Ema
("Borrowing" the laws from another planet wasn't enough. King Dedede had to "borrow" a person from Earth as well...)

(...Me.)
(Why would he go out of his way like that, and then play the lazy card and have me go to Cappy Town like I'm some servant doing an errand?)

(This is feeling more and more like I'm doing his dirty work to me...)

>Accept

"Dedede's dirty work" added to Logic.

------[X] Connect: Hero or Heel? & Logic B => Hypothesis C (Pending "Dedede's Motivation")

Ema
(I think I have it!)
(For some reason, King Dedede wants Kirby put behind bars. But if he just exercised his royal muscle, that would make the people of Cappy Town suspicious, since they seem to consider him a hero thanks to Chief Bookem's account.)
(Pressuring the Chief would still raise suspicion, so he needed someone else to do the job, someone who knows how to follow the proper protocol, even though she's never set foot in Dream Land...)
(But...I don't want to jump to conclusions just yet. I need to confirm why exactly Dedede wants to arrest Kirby.)

"Dedede's motivation" added to Logic.

-------[X] If valid, EUREKA!

Ema COULD say that, but she hasn't found anything in her immediate surroundings that creates a contradiction with any evidence she holds... Besides, it's not really...how can she put this...an "Ema" thing to say.

Don't worry, she'll find something cool to say when the time comes. if only I could give it the "speech bubble" treatment it deserves...

On to more current things, we now have our first pieces of discarded Evidence/Logic. These will be placed in a separate on the Status/Inventory post for archival purposes.

I gotta say, I love all the icons used in this quest. :)

Blast, we hit the same roadblock that can derail any train of thought: lack of conclusive evidence. Still, I'm liking how all that flowed together.

By the by, the effort you've put into the different aspects of the Quest to make it emulate the AA series makes it satisfying to read. That and participating in it.

Huh. That worked!

At this point, I fear there is only one thing left to do. We could talk to all the people of Cappy Town... but they would give us one answer. And that's useful, but I'm pretty sure it won't add anything decisive.

And trying to find Kirby is arguably a fool's errand.

I think it may be time to return and accuse the King.

But first, wrapping this whole deal up.

[X] Present Criminal Notes to Chief Bookem

Eureka! requires evidence? I seem to remember that it was said at the end of logic chains, but I could be wrong. Eureka! sort of fits Ema because Science!, but there are likely better options for her, from That's it! to Q.E.D.
I think it may be time to return and accuse the King.
Too early. At this point he could say something to the effect of 'Yeah, Kirby is sometimes heroic, but even heroes have to be accountable for their misdeeds and you can't prove he didn't do it!' That being said, I agree with the vote:
