Luxicato

nº1 Squid Fairy

Hello there! Welcome to the world of Pokémon! My name is Luxicato! People call me the Squid Fairy! This world is inhabited by creatures called Pokémon! For some people, Pokémon are pets. Other use them for fights. Myself… Well. You know the rest.

I've been doing quests for some time on Akun but my health is not good enough to spend 6h writing live, so I decided to try my hand at Forum quests. Let's see how this goes!

This is going to be a bit different to your usual pokemon quest. You are not just a young trainer traveling with your companions. You are the apprentice to a gym leader! You were never born with a hidden talent, you never saw a Ho-oh flying above you and never found a mysterious pokeball alone in a forest. Your boon is hard work. When you reached minimum trainer age you started to study. You went to a trainer academy and rose through the ranks until you became one of the best.

That's when a gym leader scouting the new generation decided that you were good enough to learn the ropes of being a true gym leader.

Because it's not just being a good trainer.

In all regions with a pokemon league, gym leaders are the ones in charge of all incidents involving pokemon. The ones called when a Hydreigon goes rampant and starts attacking people. When a Snorlax decides to take a nap in the middle of the road. When a team decides to use pokemon for evil and the police isn't enough… When legendaries are tired of their rest and decide to destroy the world.

That's what gym leaders, elite 4 and champions do. Not only they test the strength and resolve of young trainers, they protect the world from disaster.

And you are one of them. A real hero… in training.

So… Are you a boy or a girl?

[]Name
[]Male/Female
Age locked at 17

Where do you live?

[] Kanto:. Temperate climates, calm little towns and the big Saffron city right in the middle. Kanto and Johto are sister regions sharing the same Elite 4 and Champion but with different gyms. It's said that the main base of the team Rocket is here.

Gyms: Rock, Water, Electric, Grass, Poison, Psychic, Fire, Ground.

[] Johto: Sister region to Kanto and sharing the same pokemon league. Similar to Kanto but famous for their traditional towns and the big lake of rage. They don't have a criminal team of their own but team Rocket has business here too.

Gyms: Flying, Bug, Normal, Ghost, Fighting, Steel, Ice, Dragon.

[] Hoenn: The region is a collection of small islands next to the bigger one that forms the main land of Hoenn. It's filled with nature and a bit more "wild" than other regions. Because of that they don't have really big cities like Unova or Kalos. It's said that two teams called Aqua and Magma fight here, their objective still unknown.

Gyms: Rock, Fighting, Electric, Fire, Normal, Flying, Psychic, Water.

[] Sinnoh: Said to be the first region created by Arceus. Has a rich history and the oldest ruins known. Rich in water and a bit colder than other regions, Sinnoh is divided in two by the Mt. Coronet. Resting place of Arceus, or so say the legends. The main criminal organization is called Team Galactic.

Gyms: Rock, Grass, Fighting, Water, Ghost, Steel, Ice, Electric.

[] Unova: A big region populated by huge cities. It's one of the most civilized regions but even they still have nature like forests and mountains. There are no notorious pokemon criminal organizations native from the region. Rumors say that the activist group Plasma does some shady things to "help" pokemon.

Gyms: Normal, Poison, Bug, Electric, Ground, Flying, Dragon, Water.

[] Kalos: A region famous for its fashion and their main city. Lumiose city. A lot of famous people from around the world travel here regularly. It's the furthest from the other regions and traveling between Kalos and the rest is difficult. It's home to a group called Team Flare. Suspects of being a criminal organization.

Gyms: Bug, Rock, Fighting, Grass, Electric, Fairy, Psychic, Ice.

[] Alola: A collection of tropical islands famous for being a perfect tourist spot. They don't follow the same league structure as other regions, at least not yet. You would be apprentice of one of the captains, the closest they have to gym leaders. They have some trouble with a region-wide gang called "Team Skull".

"Gyms": Normal, Water, Fire, Grass, Electric, Ghost, Dragon, Fairy.

Feel free to ask any questions about the setting or your future job as an apprentice.

There will be dice in this quest. I will roll a 1d100 with no modifiers when attacking or doing other actions. The DC and results of the dice will vary according to situation, traits, rank, etc...

95+ on a dice roll is a crit. Your plan succeeds even against impossible odds. A crit also gives a slight advantage on the next rolls in combat, usually by having lasting effects like a serious damage on the enemy or the terrain changing in your favor.

5 or less on a roll is a crit fail. Your plan fails no matter how strong you are. They give a disadvantage to future rolls in that combat. Blame the dice gods.

There are no levels. Pokemon are ranked from "F-" to "S+". Ranks are a way of knowing the strength of a pokemon. They also show how good is the pokemon at fighting and how much training it had. Some say that the strongest pokemon can reach rank EX and legendaries have a rank on their own even above that. As a rule of thumb, a pokemon two whole ranks above another (D>C>B, + or - don't count) will always win. Exceptions exist.

Pokemon can learn up to 8 attacks. They don't work exactly like in the games and combat will be closer to anime. Improvised attacks are good too. I'm a huge fan of "rule of cool".

Omakes, art and similar things can give special rewards depending on the subject. Any of them have a common reward you can choose, the super dice. If you choose the superdice you can use it whenever you want to improve a dice on the next update. If two or more people use their superdice in the same roll it will have even a better effect. Using more than one superdice on Magikarp pushes him past is normal boundaries and, if that dice is a crit, unlocks a hidden ancient power.

Combat Mechanics

Battles will start with a plan. Once voters decide on what to do, I will write using that plan until something major changes in combat that forces you to think something new. Usually because your last plan failed, there is a new enemy or other inconveniences. This is also when you are able to use items.

I will roll the dice after each time you have a new plan. That roll will last until you need a new one. Enemies will also re-roll their dice once they realize their strategy isn't working. Wild pokemon less plans less often than trained ones.

Each pokemon can have up to 3 wounds (5 in bosses and story-important encounters). Wounds are added when a pokemon is closer to faint. It might be actually wounds but it also tracks exhaustion and other ailments. Everything that takes you closer to "lose". They are there so you can track better how combat is going and make better informed decisions when is time to devise a new strategy.

Super effective moves and STAB is still used when deciding how effective your attacks are.

Your plans can be as complicated as you want within reason. Remember that no plan survives contact with the enemy. Smart strategies and non-common use of attacks are encouraged, single line plans like "Use X until enemy faints" are heavily discouraged. Attacks aimed at the terrain, objects or as a distraction still benefit from STAB bonus.

In 2v2 battles where you control more than one pokemon Haru's attention is divided. That means complicated plans get exponentially more complicated to pull off without help.

You can give orders without moves. Hide, defend, run… You can even attack without a move in a way that makes sense for the pokemon. Those attacks can't benefit from STAB or super-effective bonus, they aren't strong enough.

When a pokemon is released from the pokeball they can't use moves for a couple seconds. They will be vulnerable.

Official League Rules

Both trainers release their first pokemon at the same time. Not a hard rule but is considered disrespectful to wait until your rival releases their pokemon.

No interference from the trainer is allowed. Psychic powers, items or protecting the pokemon from harm yourself will count as a lose.

You can't order your pokemon to attack a trainer. Accidents happen but if you order an attack on a trainer in an official combat you are disqualified and your license might be revoked (Depending on circumstances).

Number of pokemon, type of combat and bet is decided before the start. Money is transferred using the trainer ID. This works because all ID's are connected to a central database. Both trainers have to confirm the rules and bet before the start of combat. A referee can also be assigned as long as they also have a trainer ID to connect.

Relationships
Relationships can go from -10 (Hated) to +10 (loved). Everyone you meet including pokemon have a Rel. score with you. You can raise this number by spending time with them. It's easier to raise when the number is low. Once it reaches 5 it becomes harder.

A pokemon can megaevolve once you reach 8/10 friendship and special conditions are met.

Pokemon with a good bond are more healthy and strong.

Family

Your big sister. She is the one who took care of you since your parents died. If you call her "mom" by mistake she will kick your ass. You should call her soon. Lives in Veilstone City. She was a good trainer before you went to the Academy. Now she doesn't use her pokemon for battle.

Rel. Score: 8/10 (My brother, my world.)

Thoughts about you:
  • My little brother. I'm worried about him even if I'm sure he can keep himself safe.
  • He called and he is safe. I hope Cynthia can protect him... If it wasn't for this job... [A new day, a new life.]

Friends

Childhood friend and muscle-head. You were neighbours and you've known her since she started to walk. She is a year younger than you and what you would call your best friend. She decided to be a trainer as soon as she was ten years old, but you decided to go to the academy. The girl was a genius so she quickly was strong enough to be apprentice to a gym leader and, when her master decided to step down, the new gym leader. It's been a long time since you talked to her.

Rel. Score: 7/10 (My best friend.)

Thoughts about you:
  • Cynthia poached him before I could do it myself. "Big plans for him" she said. At least she promised to send him to me soon for training. I will kick his ass for not calling once.
  • He called. I will still kick his ass as soon as he comes here. Champion's orders. [A new day, a new life.]
  • I just don't know what to do, but being with him makes everything feel like it's going to be okay. [War Wounds]
  • Now I have a direction to follow thanks to him... My path isn't clear yet, but at least it doesn't lead me into a wall this time. [Pushing Forwards in the Wrong Direction]

Lucario ♂ (Lycium)
Fighting/Steel Type
Rank: B-
Ability 1: Steadfast
Ability 2: Justified
Trait 1: Prestigious Bloodline [Can go up to EX+ rank. Inherits best trait from parents.]
Trait 2: Aura Expert [Level 2 of aura control. Has a good control of his aura. Can communicate with humans and aura attacks are stronger.]
Trait 3: Sense of Justice [Will fight harder when doing the right thing.]

Rel. score: 3/10 (Maylene's friend)

Cynthia's assistant and Haru's companion. She has known the champion since even before she won the league. Cynthia's first apprentice. She lost her will to fight after being attacked by a strong pokemon and losing two of her own. Lily is her only one left.

Rel. Score: 5/10 (Inspiring friend, ???)

Thoughts about you:
  • Seems like a nice person. I will help him get stronger.
  • He is right. I should do something. Traveling with him... It might be the thing I was looking for. [Memories and new beginnings / End of chapter 1]
  • He saved that Shinx. He saved him when I was too scared to do something. Maybe... maybe he is right. [Playing hero]
  • I was so close to despair... Thank you, Haru [Healing / End of chapter 3]
  • He keeps helping and helping. How can I repay this to him? [Rebuilding a future]

Pokemon in training:

Daisy (Eevee ♀)
Normal Type
Rank: D
Ability 1: Adaptability (
Trait 1: Friendly (Able to make friends quickly with most pokemon and humans. Can calm down hostile wild pokemon.)

Moves: Covet, Growl, Helping Hand, Quick Attack, Bite, Sparkly Swirl, VeeVee Volley.

Akahime's pupil and member of The Guardians. She is a cheerful and energetic girl that loves superheroes. Maybe a bit too much. She often escapes to dress in her superhero costume and save people. Or at least she tries.

Your self-proclaimed rival.

Rel.Score: 3/10 (The Captain Justice to my Gligarman, My rival)

Thoughts about you:
  • He seems like a good person but I can't get too close. Can't let a civilian discover my identity. [Undercover]
  • He knows I'm the Purple Protector now, but he will not tell anyone. He might not have a superhero name but he is one like me. We will work together again some day. [Road to Veilstone / End of chapter 2]
  • Now I understand. After out battle... I know what I need to do to be stronger! [Courage and Secrets / End of chapter 4 ]

Pokemon:

Ability 2: Own Tempo (He is immune to confusion.)
Trait 1: Barrier Breaker (No matter how strong a mental barrier is, he can surpass it.)
Trait 2: Pacifist (Doesn't like battle. Harder to teach him attack moves.)
Trait 3: Super Speed (Twice as fast as a normal pokemon of his species.)
Moves: Yawn, Slack Off, Rest, Amnesia, Confusion.

A kind man working as the second in command at Veilstone city's gym. His past is a mystery, but rumors say he was raised by Beartics and left his home when he became too powerful, looking for a challenge. Those are probably rumors. He is happy living in Veilstone and helping people, specially if the help involves physical training.
He's always been a friend to you and Maylene. Helping her together with the last gym leader. His goal in life seems to be just helping people and fighting strong opponents.
He was one of the first persons in Sinnoh to officially marry a pokemon.

Rel. Score: 4/10 (A good boy.)

Thoughts about you:
  • A good and gentle boy. Like me when I was a child. If he trained more, he could reach my size in no time.

Enemies

Team Galactic grunt. Serious, short tempered and focused on her goals. She is considered the best trainer in her squad and always pairs up with her friend, even if he isn't exactly the best soldier. She dreamed of being a dancer before joining the team.

Rel.Score: -1/10 (Annoying Prize)

Thoughts about you:
  • Got in the way and now I can kiss that promotion goodbye. That Magikarp will be a good compensation. [Road to Veilstone / End of chapter 2]
  • At least he knows how to fight. I might forgive him for stopping us at the lake. [Healing / End of chapter 3]

Trait 2: Spiny (Has more spines around her body than usual.)
Moves: Poison Sting, Growth, Attraction, Mega Drain, ???

Team Galactic grunt. Laid back and a lot less focused than his friend. Lacks motivation but has a lot of talent for pokemon training. Will always follow his own moral compass and thinks that most people have more than they deserve. Was raised on the streets and now has no other home apart from the team.

Rel.Score: 1/10 (Nuisance)

Thoughts about you:
  • Got in the way and things turned out ugly. We are going to get chewed out when we get back to base... But the kid almost dies so I can't be mad at him. [Road to Veilstone / End of chapter 2]
  • Seems like a good, cute kid. Hope he doesn't get in the way. [Healing / End of chapter 3]

Pincers (Gligar ♀)
Ground/Flying Type

Trait 3: Small (Faster and sneakier, but less heavy and physically strong than others of the same species.)
Moves: Poison Sting, Quick Attack, Sand Attack, Bulldoze

Pokemon

Primal Form

Your first pokemon. His golden scales shine in the light. Seems pretty mindless but you are sure that he is smarter than he looks. As your first pokemon, he will always be special to you.

Rel. Score: 5/10 (Master.)

Thoughts about you:
  • Master pick Karp. Karp Happy. Karp weak. Karp become strong for master.
  • Training goes well. Soon all will be stronger [A lesson on courage]
  • I felt that power. A deep connection with Master. [Healing / End of chapter 3]

The first pokemon you caught. Energetic and driven. He wants to be stronger to defeat the Luxray of route 222. Sometimes he bites more than he can chew but he still has a lot to learn.

He dreams of being as courageous as Haru and Maelstrom... Even if he still doesn't understand what true courage is.

Rel. Score: 4/10 (Brave leader of the pack.)

Thoughts about you:
  • He protected me from certain death. I'm grateful even if it hurts my pride a little. He might be the key to help me grow stronger.
  • Some day I will be as brave as them. Even if I'm still weak. [A lesson on courage]
  • That was our hardest battle yet, but we survived thanks to our leader. [Healing / End of chapter 3]

Violet's first pokemon. She is a proud and strong Kirlia. She is always protecting her trainer and has her trainer's safety as a priority. Even if she tries to act cool and elegant, she is as weak to teasing as her trainer. She is a lot more willing to launch you against a wall too.

  • He helped Violet in a way I could never do. I'm glad we met him. Maybe she will leave the past behind thanks to him. [Memories and new beginnings / End of chapter 1]
  • This IDIOT will get himself killed doing things like that. And then Violet will be sad. And I will be sad too... B-Because I share feelings with Violet. [Playing hero]
  • I feel it. Even unconscious, it was too strong to not feel it. Her sadness, her fear... He was there for her when I wasn't. Maybe I can let him get closer...? [Healing / End of chapter 3]
  • He gets closer and closer to both of us. I don't know anymore who these feelings belong to. [Rebuilding a future]

A pokemon living at Maylene's gym. She is the daughter of the last gym leader's Lucario, Lycium's sister. She seems always ready to fight and prove herself. She is extremely powerful for a Buneary, but is not good at teamwork. She is waiting for a trainer that catches her eye to travel around the region getting stronger.

Buneary ♀
Normal Type

Ability 1: Huge power
Traits:
  • Prestigious Bloodline [Can go up to EX+ rank. Inherits best trait from parents.]

Moves: Facade, Power-up punch, Frustration, Focus Punch and Attract.

Rel. Score: 1/10 (Just another trainer)

Thoughts about you:
  • Him and his pokemon are weak. They might have potential but still too weak.
  • He might be the one... But can anyone be master's substitute? [Training and a Date]

Teachers

Sinnoh's Champion and your mentor. She wants to leave the league but she can't until she finds a good replacement. Cynthia thinks that, with your potential, you could be that replacement. Surprisingly casual or even goofy when not in a serious mood.

Rel. Score: 2/10 (My apprentice. My hope for the future of the region.)

Thoughts about you:
  • I found it. Someone with enough potential to be the next champion. He has a talent to recognize strength... I should test it.
  • I knew it! He is champion material. [A golden future.]
  • That conversation with Maylene was so cute... I should send him there first. For training, of course. [A new day, a new life.]

Beautiful and mysterious leader of The Guardians. She is Rose's mentor. Even if she always wears a motherly smile, her gaze is analytical and calculating. She reminds you a lot of Cynthia. Her team has a base in Veilstone City and she offered to teach you some things about pokemon training.

Owner of Mewtwo, a legendary pokemon and the most famous pokemon criminal in the world at the time. You are one of the few who know this.

She revealed that her right arm is a prosthetic, a metal arm pretty hard to differentiate for a normal one while she is wearing her coat.

Rel.Score: 2/10 (Cynthia's apprentice)

Thoughts about you:
  • So he is the boy I heard about... Not impressive but his heart seems in the right place. He can go far. [Road to Veilstone / End of chapter 2]
  • He accepted my training and impressed me. He is not a bad kid and will help me reach my goal... But he saw me in a moment of weakness... [The Monster and the Princess/Start of chapter 5 ]

[X] Sinnoh: Said to be the first region created by Arceus. Has a rich history and the oldest ruins known. Rich in water and a bit colder than other regions, Sinnoh is divided in two by the Mt. Coronet. Resting place of Arceus, or so say the legends. The main criminal organization is called Team Galactic.

I've always loved Sinnoh. My first real Pokemon game that I actually beat.

So quick questions before I throw out my plan

Will the gym leaders be canon gym leaders or will we be spicing it up with some good ol OCs (my personal preference honestly. As while some are cool others are....yeah..)

How will turns and in general the plot go? How do you plan to keep it fresh, so to speak. Feel free to ignore this if it leads to spoilers , but I feel as its q valid question considering that our future career will be in a suedo teaching position where our job is to test but also to lose. And even if it's a good loss it can be demoralizing in too much doses.

Will we be following "stations of canon" ? Honestly would love maybe new plots or different takes on the criminal organizations and issues behind the scenes besides "we are a crazy cult that wants to cause massive amount of bad stuff cus EVULL"

I think red flags pokemon quest did that well with the conflict between guilds and corporations etc, and I liked another pokemons OC evil team as well. They felt criminal without going full grimdark.

Will we be choosing our first pokemon? Or pokemon in general at the start or will we have to train them up etc.

I can answer all of those questions.

Will the gym leaders be canon gym leaders or will we be spicing it up with some good ol OCs (my personal preference honestly. As while some are cool others are....yeah..)

I also like OC's but I will maintain the canon gym leaders, E4 and champions. There will be a big cast of other OC characters and you can choose to interact more with them than with the canon ones.

The quest will be divided in two main parts. "Mission" and "Free time". Your main job is not just battling young trainers. You will be protecting the region from danger. Your gym leader will send you on missions that will have their own plot. When not in a mission you will have the option to spend time with people you know, train pokemon, etc.

I don't like quests that are "empire building" with tons of numbers and weekly plans. I focus on character interaction and relationship building. The closer I will get to that is timeskips when you decide to spend a whole week training or something like that.

Will we be following "stations of canon" ? Honestly would love maybe new plots or different takes on the criminal organizations and issues behind the scenes besides "we are a crazy cult that wants to cause massive amount of bad stuff cus EVULL"

Yes and no. I have a plot ready that works with any of the regions. The canon will happen but you are there before canon so you might end up battling alongside some canon characters (From the games) in the third or fourth arc. Or maybe you will totally destroy canon before that, who knows. The teams are still there and they have plans. But I like to focus on my own ideas.

Will we be choosing our first pokemon? Or pokemon in general at the start or will we have to train them up etc.

After choosing a region you will choose one of the gym types there. You will pick a starter from a selection of three pokemon of that type. You will have to capture and train your other pokemon yourself.

Thanks for the answers, yeah I asked about the gym leaders becuase frankly.... people have favorites. Obviously some personalities and canon characters appeal to people more then others and while they may like the region and pokemon , the gym leader there whose typing they want may not be the one they particularly care for.

And I'm kind of hoping the bias doesnt influence the starting votes too much , cus that would be boring

I understand but everyone has their reason to decide what they want. I really like bug pokemon but I don't really like much the bug leaders. I also really like some leaders but not their pokemon type.

Doesn't really matter what I have to write. I will try to make it fun for everyone. Even if you decide to start with a magikarp or something.

There are no notorious pokemon criminal organizations native from the region. Rumors say that the activist group Plasma does some shady things to "help" pokemon.

Reasoning: Some fairly nice personalities with sinnoh and honestly I have a hard time remembering all the newer pokemon so I'm biased.

Also I kind of want a awkward but adorable male Mc that's doing his best to be noticed by senpai
Gain approval from a mentor figure even if they have contrasting or opposite personalites.

Personally I'm aiming for water or grass here but the other types are cool too

Edit: Heres the link to the gym leader page if you guys want to see the leaders of each region.

I want to play around in Sinnoh, if we're gonna do Sinnoh a gemstone name seems fitting.

More gemstones and the like that could be names. Topaz, Lapis, Lazuli, Garnet, Amethyst, Amber, Agate, Spinels, Albite, Baryte, Jasper, Druzy, Schorl, Copal, Coral, Carnelia, Opal

Introduction/Character creation 2
Your name is Haru Azure and today is the most important day of your life. It's the last day in the academy and your teachers are doing some sort of speech about the importance of a good trainer and the bond with your pokemon. Pokemon none of you have yet, of course. Tons of ten-year old kids run around the region with a pokemon because a professor decided that it was a good time to give trainer license. You don't have one of course, at least not yet. You did things the RIGHT way. You studied for years not just combat but also science and ETHICS. A lot of trainers could use that.

NO YOU ARE NOT JEALOUS BECAUSE YOU ARE GETTING A POKEMON SOON.

Okay you might be a bit jealous of the younger trainers, but that ends today.

When the too long speech ends your teacher has an announcement to make. The gym leaders of the region have been keeping watch on this year's students. Your class is one of the best in years, and they decided to pick some of you as apprentices.

That's… a big deal. Usually people start working as researchers, breeders… Well as soon as you leave the academy you usually find a pokemon-related job or try to gain the gym badges, but being a lot more prepared than normal trainers.

But this is much better. This is what most of the people in your class wanted. The chance of one day being a gym leader or even a member of the Elite 4. You worked hard for this. You weren't the best but you were close to that. That… probably was enough, right?

And it was. Soon after the ceremony ended you were called to the principal's office. Someone wanted to see you. Your mind raced with all the possibilities. All the gym leaders were really good trainers and you could learn a lot from all of them but… who was waiting for you at the office?

[] Roark. A young and new gym leader. Works at Oreburgh City, a mining town. His gym's type is Rock. Looks a bit nervous even if you should be the nervous one.

[] Gardenia. A friendly gym leader. Works at Eterna City and is the gym leader of Grass type. She smiles at you as you enter.

[] Maylene. A determined gym leader. Works at Veilstone City and is the gym leader of Fighting type. She looks young, younger than you but the determination in her eyes scares you.

[] Crasher Wake. A boisterous gym leader. Works at Pastoria City and is the gym leader of Water type. Slightly intimidating and dressed like a wrestler. Why isn't he fighting type?

[] Fantina. A glamorous gym leader. Works at Hearthome City and is the gym leader of Ghost type. Refined and elegant. You feel conscious of your appearance just being near her.

[] Byron. An experienced gym leader. Works at Canalave City and is the gym leader of Steel type. Wise and strong. He is Roark's father.

[] Candice. A cheerful gym leader. Works at Snowpoint City and is the gym leader of Ice type. Happy-go-lucky and warm-hearted. She is not as young as she looks, but you will not say that to her.

[] Volkner. A stoic gym leader. Works at Sunyshore City and is the gym leader of electric type. Serious and slightly anti-social.

[] Is that… Cynthia?! What is the champion doing here?!
