The Infinite War and Seraphim conflict is over. You are Lieutenant General Rebecca Shepard, UEF Commander and veteran of the Infinite War, who got thrown into the Warhammer 40k galaxy by an unsuccessful quantum gate jump during a routine patrol mission and into an ongoing apocalyptic conflict. How will the lone commander navigate this unfamiliar and hellish galaxy of eternal war, where she is one of the few slivers of hope in a galaxy in which a cruel humanity sacrifices a million brave men and women every day to ward off extinction from itself, horrific Xenos threats and the machinations of Dark Gods.

Character Creation - 3851.4 Coalition Time

Somewhere - 3851.4 Coalition Time

A violent cough escapes your lungs, awakening you out of your unconsciousness. It does not feel nice. You are freezing, even with the extensive life support your armor should be able to provide in case the ACUs stop working for whatever reason. Slowly you regain your vision and are greeted by the bright light of the flickering holomap in front of you throwing hard shadows around your cockpit. Nearly every surface seems to be covered by a thin layer of frost.

"Luna", you cough, surprised to see your breath turn to smoke. "Are you still there?"

"Ye-yes.", the voice of your ACUs assistant AI stutters. You frown, your ACUs quantum core is buried so deep inside under slabs of armor that only a core breach should be able to affect her systems. "What happened?"

"Scanning. Quantum core...stable. Quantum link...offline. Power plant...offline. Self repair systems...offline. Engineering suite...offline. Tactical systems...offline."

You groan. At least your control interfaces and the holomap have stopped flickering and returned to functionality. You lean a little to your right out of your command chair and open up the panel hiding the emergency reactor restart. A dimly lit holo-button appears in the recess and you push against it, against the force field projectors providing haptic feedback, until your armored gloves touch the cockpit metal. A soft sound confirms the action and barely audible hum below you tells you its working.

As the cockpits life support kicks in and the frost dissipates you have returned your attention back to the controls, going through Lunas menus to restart the individual systems. Finally her quantum link comes to life and you try to reconnect back to Coalition Command so they can recall you. Something must have gone wrong during the jump.

You frown. "Are there any anomalies with the link?"

"I can detect no damages to the quantum link system." Luna mirrors the readout before you on the holoscreen. "Handshake returns empty."

You lean back and stare at the emptiness on the screen before you. Normally there'd be the signatured of EarthCom, Coalition Command, General Hall and the other UEF and Coalition commanders, but now they are gone.

What went wrong? It was supposed to be a standard exploratory jump, one of many to reconnect the systems lost when QAI devastated the Quantum Network. Nothing was supposed to go wrong. Gates with no receiver were not 100% safe, but they should never be able to move you out of range of the Coalition's comm range. Could it be a trap? Both Order and Seraphim remnant commanders have been known to utilize quantum jamming arrays.

Who are you?

You are a United Earth Federation commander under the command of the Coalition for the Mutual Defense and Security of Humanity, the alliance between the UEF, the Cybran government and the Aeon Loyalists forged in the fires of the war against the Seraphim. You are an almost superhuman warrior, enhanced by gene modifications and minor cybernetic implants to facilitate control of your ACU and your forces. The ACU is the tool of war of the 39th century, a 40 meter tall war machine that can be teleported over vast distances via quantum gating and can rapidly assemble an army of robotic drones on site using proto-fabricator and quantum link technology.

Choose Name (Optional, will veto "dumb" names)
-[]Daniel Archer (Male)
-[](Write in)(Write-in Gender, Male or Female please, not confident in writing nonbinary characters)

Choose your background (Vote for one)
[]UEF
You are a "normal" UEF commander. Descendant of gene-tailored and cloned colonists and with a long family history of military service your path to command was relatively unspectacular.
-[]Veteran of the Infinite War (additional trait, can be taken for free)
You are a Veteran of the Infinite war and fought in countless battles on countless worlds against the Aeon Illuminate and Cybran nation, you held the line when both tried to stop Black Sun from firing, the day the infinite war ended and a new one began. You held the line on X-day, when the Seraphim came streaming through the Quantum Rift and turned Earth into a barren wasteland, while EarthCom tried to evacuate as many as possible. You fought side by side with your former enemies in the Coalition's desperate struggle against a superior enemy, up to the day the Commander destroyed the Rift stabilizer and Princess Burke was able to close it for good.

[]Symbiont
A Symbiont is a human augmented with advanced AI implants that grant increased mental and problem solving performance. While conversion into a symbiont is on a voluntary basis, for centuries the UEF kept the Symbionts on a tight leash via a secret loyalty program. As one of the last ones created before X-day, your loyalty program was soon deactivated as part of the Coalition Agreement between the exile UEF government and Dr. Gustav Brackman, the Cybran leader. You continued to serve as an analyst during the war, which enabled you to get into the UEFs commander program after the Coalition snatched victory on Earth.

[]Illuminate
For centuries being an Illuminate, a follower of the Aeon religion, "The Way", was forbidden under threat of capital punishment in the UEF. Cursed as religious fanatics, genocidal maniacs and mind readers, you had to hide your connection to the Way all your life. It was only through an intuition provided by the Way that you survived X-day, being among the first to gate through the evac gates to Capella. After the admission of the Aeon Loyalists into the coalition and the relaxation of anti-Illuminate laws due to wartime emergency measures, you became a liaison between Loyalist commanders and Coalition HQ, a circumstance which enabled you to get into the UEFs commander program after the Coalition snatched victory on Earth.

Choose one Trait
[]Strategic Genius
Among your peers your inherent talent for ACU warfare is almost unmatched, a talent that was honed and fostered by your teachers and instructors at the academy. You graduated top of your year as one of the most potential commanders in the UEF military.

[]Graduate of the Coalition Academy of Sciences
It is required of every commander to have at least a basic understanding of quantum-, proto-fabricator- and UEF-technology. You decided to improve that level by enrolling into the Coalition Academy of Sciences after the end of the Seraphim war, where coalition techs did their best to fill your brain with the intricacies of mankind's technologies.

[]Diplomatic Training
War has changed after the infinite war. No longer is brute force the only tool the UEF employs. As part of your transfer to the coalition, you were instructed and taught how to handle and conduct yourself during negotiations and official talks as a representative of the Coalition.

[]AI Expert - only with Symbiont
During the Seraphim war you worked closely with Brackmann and his team on QAI countermeasures. As such you have a great deal of knowledge on the function, strengths and weaknesses of general artificial intelligence, perhaps more than many might want you to have.

[]Master of the Way - only with Illuminate
The Way is the guiding philosophy of the Aeon religion. A mysterious and barely understood force, the Way connects an Illuminate to the universe and the living beings around them. A connection that manifests in rare dreams, visions, feelings or intuitions for the untrained and in the feared and misunderstood telepathic and telekinetic abilities of trained Aeon templars, paladins and champions. You had the luck to be taught by a Loyalist paladin in the advanced techniques of the Way and the discoveries of Princess Burke that the Way should be used for peace, not violence.

Choose one ACU Upgrade
[]Tetratanium ACU Armor
Tetratanium was a new amor composite UEF RnD worked on during the Seraphim war. While known for a long time, it was always very difficult to produce quickly in large amounts with protofabbers, but its properties, being three times as resilient as transuranic crystal-armor, while being the same density, made it always interesting for armor applications. Shortly after the war, UEF scientists found a method to give Tetratanium similar regenerative abilities as TUC-armor on an ACU chassis and your ACU outer shell has been replaced with the improved material.

[]AI Core Upgrade
QAI has shown that unshackled AI is both extremely dangerous and extremely competent. After the war, Cybran scientists worked on an upgraded ACU AI package that improved several management, analysis, cyberwarfare and regulator functions, while also increasing the shackles binding its capabilities. Luna is such an advanced AI and has proven very useful in managing small tasks delegated to her.

[]Advanced Protofabricator
Aeon technology has always been more advanced in many fields compared to Cybran and UEF tech. As part of the Coalition technology exchange, the Loyalists worked with Cybran and UEF scientists to integrate some Aeon advances into their tech base. The result is an experimental protofabricator that will hopefully prove worthy to be rolled out among Coalition forces.

Thanks for participating. I reserve myself the right to disregard, interpret, change and add to both WH40k and Supreme Commander lore as I see fit to support the narrative.

Mechanics and Quest Philosophy
In opposition to my other quest, Attempting to avoid Distaster: An Earth Defense Planquest, A Stranger in a War-torn Galaxy will be more narrative focused and use a very basic d20 system. For certain action I roll a d20: A 1 is a critical failure of some sort and a 20 is a critical success of some sort, which in between being either better or worse than expected. Actions have hidden DCs that mark the line of failure/success. You will mostly control the actions of a single character and a team of subordinates you will need to build up. This quest will not turn into building up a second UEF and kick everyone's ass, mostly because the MC will quickly realize giving the former imperial populations access to industrial- and military-grade protofabbers will quickly turn into a massive problem they might be unable to contain. Access to military SupCom tech and the focus will be on a small number of characters.

Character Information
Main Character:

Name:
Rebecca "Revy" Shepard

Rank: Lieutenant General
Gender: Female
Born: 1.10.3806 (Currently 45 years old)
Childhood: Cloned citizen raised by the UEFs state care program.
Motivation for the Infinite War: The UEF shall reign supreme.
Warfare Style: The Shield - Let the foe expend themselves upon your defenses, when they tire, press forward, when they stumble, press forward, when they weaken, press forward.
Appearance: Rebecca Shepard is a woman who exudes confidence and strength. Despite her apparent youth, she is in fact 46 years old, appearance kept exceptionally young, sometimes to her dislike, due to the effects of her Commander enhancements. Her military posture is immediately apparent, as she stands tall and confident with her shoulders back and her head held high. Her short brown hair is styled in a swept bob, which accentuates her sharp features and grey eyes. Her skin is a light tone, pale due to lack of sunlight exposure. Her sharp features and determined gaze make her an imposing figure, but her kind demeanor hints at her inner strength and compassion.

Personal Items/Trophies:

Artisinal Power Dagger:
A power long-dagger, its scabbard and hilt are artfully decorated with Imperial iconography. The pommel is shaped into a skull and an Imperial Double Eagle serves as the guard. Everything but the blade is crafted from a black metal with a fetching dark silvery pattern reminiscent of scaled beasts and is decorated with fine silver and gold filigree. The blade itself is a striking silver-white, its power field activated by a black pearl serving as a recessed button. The weapon was gifted to you by the hive nobles after your defeat of the Tyranids in the battle of Epstost Major.

Space Marine Gifted Banner: The banner gifted to you is a sight to behold, hanging from a polished silver pole that rises almost to the ceiling. At the top of the mechanism holding the vertical pole, the emblem of the UEF stands proud, etched in dark metal and gleaming in the light. The bright white fabric of the banner is stretched taut, serving as the perfect canvas for an ornate embroidery of the UEF symbol, crafted with intricate attention to detail. Positioned at the center of the banner, a stylized ACU commands attention, radiating an aura of power and strength. The countless little details and decorations that adorn it add to its grandeur and magnificence, evoking the indomitable spirit of the UEF and all that it represents.

Her smart amber eyes are always scanning her surroundings, taking in everything around her. Her pale skin is unmarred by scars or blemishes, a result of her holy restoration, the strong, wiry athletic build it has provided her one she seeks to maintain with religious fervor. When not wearing her armor, she is often seen in simple, drab clothing, preferring functionality over fashion. Her white dyed hair is shoulder-length and adds to her unique appearance.

Background Characters:
Elam Herren is a young man of nineteen years, who has been trained for service to highborn people since he could walk. His boyish appearance belies his level of maturity and professionalism. His dark brown eyes are filled with a sense of purpose. Elam's appearance is always impeccable, with his well-groomed appearance and professional posture and manners. He is quick and attentive, always ready to anticipate the needs of those he serves.

Maxweil Harris is a man in his early thirties, who is a graduate of the prestigious Scriptorum Imperialis and a suspected Inquisition plant, something which he has denied swearing on the God Emperor of Mankind. He has a scrawny build and a short stature, which gives him an unassuming appearance. His light blue eyes are striking and are often described as piercing. His light skin is unmarred by any blemishes and his short black hair is carefully groomed. Hallis is easily startled, and always on high alert. He carries himself with the nervous dignity of someone who is used to dealing with important and delicate matters. The back of his head is covered by a cybernetic implant, which assists his data storage and recollection abilities.

Rina Tor is a woman in her forties, who serves as Eliza Harkon's accountant and personal assistant. She is a former Administratum clerk, and her years of experience in this field have made her an expert in financial management and organization. Rina has a stout figure, which gives her a solid and dependable appearance. Her light skin is smooth and unmarred, and her well-groomed blonde hair hides the cybernetic implant replacing the right side of her head, including one eye. She is diligent to a fault, always ensuring that her work is accurate and that her employer's needs are met with an eye for reliability, attention to detail, and ability to keep things running smoothly.

Shem Yo is a young man, hired by Harkon due to his piloting and driving skills. He has a lanky build, which gives him a lean and athletic appearance. His olive skin is marked by scars from an infectious disease he contracted in his youth. He has a sidecut hairstyle, which is often styled in a messy, carefree manner. He is a chain smoker, and his lazy attitude is often mistaken for a lack of care for his job, but in reality, he is highly skilled at his profession. Shem Yo is usually seen wearing his flight suit, and his attire is always kept in good condition, showing his pride in his profession. Despite his lazy attitude, he is a reliable and skilled pilot, known for his ability to handle difficult situations with ease and precision.

Tellia Angsasia is a woman of indeterminate age, who exudes a sense of style and flair. Her slim, almost skinny build is accentuated by her smooth tan skin, and her appearance is always extravagantly styled. Her eyes have been replaced with bright silver cybernetics, giving her a unique and striking appearance. Her bell-like voice is a defining feature of her presence. She is a stylist by profession, and her bold fashion choices are a reflection of her creative mind and artistic eye. She has a unique sense of style that is both avant-garde and elegant. Her ability to transform her clients and make them look and feel their best is unparalleled. She is always brightly dressed, her cybernetic eyes adding a touch of mystery to her already striking appearance.

Hanse Vers is a young man in his early twenties, trained as a chapter serf in tailoring. He has a wiry appearance, with rough features and a boxer's nose. His tan skin and his scarred and scarfed over fingertips are a testament to his hardworking nature and dedication to his craft. Despite his rugged exterior, Hanse possesses a timid and polite personality, a stark contrast to his appearance. He is a skilled tailor, having honed his craft under the watchful eye of his Astartes masters. He is able to create intricate and precise garments, his workmanship is impeccable. He is a shy and reserved individual, preferring to keep to himself. However, when it comes to his work, he is focused and determined, always striving for perfection.

Isec Vers is a young man in his early twenties, with a striking resemblance to his fraternal twin brother, Hanse. Both brothers are trained in the craft of tailoring as chapter serfs. Isec is characterized by his lighter skin tone and refined, delicate features, which contrast with Hanse's rough appearance. Despite their physical differences, Isec is just as dedicated and skilled in his craft as his brother. He is known for his bright, cheerful personality.

Teldram Annaram is a tall and imposing figure, with a strong, muscular frame that speaks to his dedication to physical fitness. His bronze skin is weather-beaten and prematurely aged, bearing the scars of a failed aspirant of the Halo Swords space marine chapter. Despite his past disappointment, Teldram is serious and eager to prove himself, attaching himself to his role as Shepard's banner carrier with a fierce determination. Despite his rough exterior, there is a sense of determination and loyalty that shines through in his every move.

M3-Gan is an Adept of the Adeptus Mechanicus, with an unsettling appearance. Her impossibly large and wide eyes have an unblinking and lifeless stare, and her smooth, porcelain-like skin almost appears to be made of plastic. Her unchanging facial expressions and delicate, almost fragile features contrast with her natural and emotive voice. She is usually seen wearing the red robes of her order, her long black hair cascading out of her hood. Despite her unnerving appearance, she is a skilled and dedicated member of the Cult of Mars.

Sigma-Mael VI is a highly cyberised Adept, his body a fusion of flesh and machinery. Two blue glowing camera eyes peer out from his metal-plated face, and two servo arms extend from his back. Countless mechadendrites, writhing and flexing, expand from his body, and his servos whirr and hydraulics hiss with each movement. Despite the intimidating appearance of his enhancements, Sigma-Mael VI carries himself with a sense of regal authority, often using an ornate staff as a cane to support his movements.

Fran Johnson is a Adept who stands out among his peers for his strikingly human appearance. Though augmented, his body is not inhumanly so, and he sports short, messily cropped dark hair that gives him the appearance of being in his thirties. He has handsome features and a three day stubble, giving him a friendly and approachable demeanor. Despite his position, Fran doesn't shy away from mingling with the regular humans in Shepard's retinue and is occasionally seen smoking and socialising with them.

Its not a planvote, each option is an individual item. If the winning combination is invalid, say both UEF with AI expert have won in their categories, background takes priority over trait.

mankind on warhammer needs improved FTL,communication methods and gradual reform toward healthier government models (sup com is a stomp militarily speaking)

i think either iluminate or science focused character could work here for that
plus i choose scientist and AI in hopes of having enough research capabilities to crack necron anti-warp tech,we are gonna need it

Be aware however not being a veteran will cost you in other areas and I do not intend to make the fight against any of the more powerful 40k factions a cakewalk.

Hm. One of the most annoying bits will probably be finding trustworthy subordinates, and to handle populations saved. And increased build speed will be very nice.

Thus, going for a diplomancer veteran:

i think either iluminate or science focused character could work here for that
plus i choose scientist and AI in hopes of having enough research capabilities to crack necron anti-warp tech,we are gonna need it
There won't be much uplifting here, much more of a hero+their team traveling from battleground to battleground. Also, it's worth noting that UEF ACUs have psychic shielding that can protect against Aeon mind control. So the danger of Warp Shenanigans is lower than you may think.

I've seen Cybrans in 40k played with, the Illuminate would be a whole kettle of fish, but I kinda like the UEF because it most confronts the simple fact the UEF did some horrifically fucked up things because they were pushed up against the wall. The loyalty program, Black Sun... I'll give the imperium the minor benefit of the doubt in that it's threats were far more profound than literal cyber terrorists and a new age religious theocracy, but the point stands the UEF flirted with and used a lot of rationalizations the Imperium does to justify its own inhumanity. Having someone who understands that sort of remorseless cruelty because they used to be an instrument of it is going to be fascinating.

We can't 'uplift' 40k, we can't topple the Imperium, any civil war or major schism in the Imperium opens things up for a lot more people to suffer, but we can advocate for a better way, we can fight on against the very idea that the Imperium has to be this cruel.

If we fought to protect Black Sun, we're as responsible for billions of deaths as any Inquisitor is. Confronting our own crimes as we confront the Imperium's seems like a great way to explore our character and examine the setting.

EDIT: There's also the simple fact the UEF has the coolest kit. At least for conventional play. As badass as playing a teleporting Tetratanium Cybran ACU Microwave laser assassin build would be, no one would ever want to play that risky.

My favored fighting style is Artillery turtle and the UEF are king with that style.

my trait pick is because i think we will need to add to our build list. For an infantry bot i'm thinking a bot armed with a riot shield and a plasma shotgun and maybe an under-barrel las pistol derived weapon for long range plinking.

Infantry bots.... but we already have the mech marine :V Never mind our smallest unit is probably roughly the size of a Dreadnought.

It's probably best to just think of us as a one man titan legion that generates it's own supporting units.

I don't know the lore, but it seems strange that only the UEF can have the additional veteran trait. Do the other two factions have their own non-trait advantages?

You are a UEF commander regardless. I dont want to write a Cybran or Aeon commander since I am a massive UEF simp (look at my pfp), but you can choose between being a Symbiont (human with AI fused to your brain) and an Illuminate, which are essentially Cybran lite and Aeon lite, which I think is a good tradeoff. Veteran of the Infinite War is my way to balance out being a "normal " human, compared to having access to the AI in your head or having low-medium level psychic powers. Lore wise, neither Symbionts or members of the Illuminate religion could become UEF commanders before the creation of the Coalition during the Seraphim war.
