A Penguin Plays RULE THE WAVES

81.3 AFTER ACTION REPORT - Coastal Raid on Austria-Hungary

>> CA ADOBO> It wasn't there at all.

Our spy operations in Austria are far less reliable than our French and Italian operatives.

Capital ships have thick lines, so all there was in the area were some trade vessels or patrol boats.

>> CA ADOBO> Boring.

So from the track:

1) ADOBO headed North until she espied an unknown contact at about 8:45.

2) Entering the loop coming from the West was ADOBO sighting and following that unknown vessel until it took shelter inside the port of Cattaro.

3) Turning around, the upper part of the loop is ADOBO finding and sinking an errant Trader.

4) The down and out loop is ADOBO exiting the mission area.

>> CA ADOBO> Again, boring.

Let's not do this again.

82.1 WAR! - Spain vs Italy and Austria-Hungary - June 1911

(muddles through the stack of reports)
Uggh.

1) Austria-Hungary has laid down MS and AMC - light utility ships.
- Very needed in war, as expected.

2) France shipbuilding.
- Don't care, France is not an enemy.

3) Strikes and labor unrest have delayed construction of AMC Delfin II.
- Why? What are these selfish idiots doing?!
- Is it treason to impair the war effort? We're winning!
- We're not being blockaded, a certain amount of shipping losses aside we still have full consumer access to goods in Europe and America.

It may be a protest for unsafe worker conditions or substandard materials.
You have been in war for over two years now.

4) Italy is behind us in Ship Design.
- Of course they are.
- They have no ships.

5) AMC vs AMC combat.
- Or non-combat as it turns out.

6) Raider losses summary.
- Not much we can do about random results like that.

Our Unrest is at a tolerable level.

But it's not zero, so while people are confident they are showing some war weariness.

Okay then. Let's try to address some problems.
Rearranging by location, we have so much in Northern Europe, which is pointless since we are unchallenged here.

Move FANTASTICA to the Caribbean to deal with AMC Raiders.

And then relocating ADONTBE into the Mediterranean to better deal with Cruiser Actions.

ADOBO Armored Cruisers are designed to work in pairs.

If there's a Battle Cruiser you would lose two ships instead of one.

No, see I have a plan.

(setting MS DORITO into Foreign Station)

I could set both of them as unstoppable Raiders to smash AMC in their way or Coastal Patrol to do the same.

Or leave them in Active Fleet and if it's Cruiser Action and there's a Battle Cruiser we're just going to run before they see us, because our watch training is better than theirs too.

Our Dreadnoughts are too hefty to participate in Coastal Raid actions.

One month of this is fine.

82.2 WAR! - Spain vs Italy and Austria-Hungary - mid-month events

Excellent.

Join the Hunt, ye born of blood.

We have been overusing an old hull built at the start of this war.
Go on then, have a rest for a while. You did good.

The AMC DELFIN II is an entirely new improved class compared to the AMC DELFIN.

All right, what surprise do you have in store for me this time?

Wow.

That's a pretty stunning surprise, yeah.
Good job. You guys take a break and celebrate too. You earned it.

This better not be ADOBO again.

83.1 WAR! - Coastal Raid on Eastern Spain

Tch.

>> CA ADOBO> Before you start on that, you should know this is a good thing.

Explain.

>> CA ADOBO> This is a Coastal Raid. Not us raiding them, but them raiding us.

>> CA ADOBO> Dreadnoughts sally forth in strategic area denial so can't easily participate in coastal defense actions.
>> CA ADOBO> The enemy just sneak around them, you need Cruisers capable of long repetitive patrols to really secure the seas.

>> CA ADOBO> Also, it's NOT Austria-Hungary that's raiding us. It's ITALY.

Also, apparently it's almost night.

>> CA ADOBO> Aw gahd demmit.

Well this is better for us. The Pastabotes are just going to get lost somewhere around here again.
It's just going to be a waste of everyone's time and fuel.

No, wait, that is worse for us, because we want to sink even more of their depleted fleet so that finally they decide to end this war on the negotiating table!

>> CA ADOBO> Wahey.

I am actually curious what brave ship so dares to challenge Spanish waters.
Can Dreadnoughts participate in Coastal Raid actions?

Of course they can.
Why couldn't they?

More likely to be Coastal Bombardment missions, but if there aren't any Cruisers around then BBs will have to do the job.

>> CA ADOBO> It's a DD.

>> CA ADOBO> It's a pair of DDs.

Well then they're safe.
Never gonna catch them in these conditions.

>> CA ADOBO> Yeah lost sight of them.

>> CA ADOBO> WHAT THE SHI-

>> CA ADOBO> Where did that come from?!

83.2 WAR! - Coastal Raid on Eastern Spain
They're running passive, watch yourself.
Waiting in ambush with their lights off...

That's the problem with the utter shellacking we gave to the Italian Navy.

With all their defeats and the mutinies in their ships, the only ones that actually remain are the SMART BASTARDS.

>> CA ADOBO> ARE YOU SAYING WE'RE FIGHTING ITALIAN NINJAS?!

... Something like that.

>> CA ADOBO> COOL!

No, not cool! Get back here!

>> CA ADOBO> Aha!
>> CA ADOBO> Foolish ninja warrior, now that you have exposed yourself, you can only di-

What, again!

>> CA ADOBO> NYOH!

>> CA ADOBO> Ninja Vanished!

So that happens when you can't see where a torpedo is coming from?
That would be way more useful to get a notice in open combat when there's fish in the water instead of having to watch several different battle zones at once.

You should run combat in increments, not real-time with pause.
This isn't Baldur's Gate, you know.

That's unrealistic though!

On the other hand hand, ADOBO exists, soo...

83.3 WAR! - Coastal Raid on Eastern Spain

>> CA ADOBO> You missed!
>> CA ADOBO> Now, young ninja, you can only die.

You missed.
They're not moving and you missed.

Why are they not moving?

And now they're gone.

>> CA ADOBO> WHERE ARE THEY!

Be thankful instead that you're not eating a torpedo.

>> CA ADOBO> I HATE DESTROYERS.

It's fine.
A waste of time, but at least no damage.

FRICK!

83.3 AFTER ACTION REPORT - Coastal Raid on Eastern Spain

Zero damage. Fascinating.

>> CA ADOBO> WERE THEY SHADOW CLONES ALL ALONG?!!

I was suspicious about how they maintained such a perfect sailing formation.

The encounter started at 16:00 and ended at just before 9:00.
Those DDs didn't leave the mission area.

Judging from the track, that's a seek and destroy pattern.
They really wanted to get another shot at you.

Brave.

I would also say foolish, but ADOBO got lost in the dark.

>> CA ADOBO> Hey, it's their luck not to show up in front of me again!

Well that's a victory I can't deny the Italians.
They're hanging on somehow for dear life.

84.1 WAR! - Spain vs Italy and Austria-Hungary - July 1911

Ugh more paperwork.
Let's get this over with.

1) Royal Navy intel reports
- DDs to fill their need for massive foreign station requirements.
- It's better now that we don't have so much of our Empire anymore

2) French intel reports
- If the British are building DDs, then we'll build better DDs for cheaper!
- Or something pride-motivated like that I assume

3) AMC Delfin II is commissioned into the Navy
- Excellent. We need more hulls for Coastal Patrol and Raiding.

4) AMC Delfin 2 is in the yard with engine problems
- Delfin 2 is a Delfin (1)- class.
- Because we have been overworking that merchant hull on Raider actions.
- Fair enough, rest and overhaul.

5) Austria Hungary have more light craft
- AMCs and MS, huh.
- The AMC is more annoying since it could be used for Raider actions.

6) Italy has another AMC
- Same annoyance factor

7) Enemy munitions are not as good as ours
- I 'blame' the ADOBO-class and the eight-inch secondary batteries of the BARACO class for this.
- We rely on big guns that can pack a decent amount of explosive filler to break DDs and other light hulls in half in a single hit

8) CSA have 13-inch guns
- Disturbing.
- We never really got around to picking a fight with them.

9) We are blockaded.
- WHERE. HOW.

HOW.

You moved CA ADONTBE into the Mediterranean, remember?

They are blockading us with a single DD.
One Destroyer.

How badass is that ship?!

Meanwhile BB BARBACOA is still a year and eight months away.

It's okay. Go.

84.2 WAR! - Spain vs Italy and Austria-Hungary - mid-month events

We lost a few submarines and need replenishment.
God bless their brave souls.

It's 1911 and submarines are basically surface boats that dive sometimes.
The greatest threat to submarines are not enemy ASW but mechanical failure from improper engineering, maintenance, and doctrine.

I trust the Army.
Get it done.

I doubt the enemy have better torpedo technology than us (we are constantly spending on torpedo training), but different approaches breed new discoveries.

Hah.
Our ships are like superheroes, acting mostly alone.

Our Cruisers are super-independent, our Battleships completely self-sufficient.
We don't act with Fleet tactics, it's all a matter of strategy, encounters, and our weight and training advantage.

Hmm. I don't understand what this means, but presumably it groups CA and BC together?

If you don't have it, Battle Cruisers will group into the Main Force with your Battleships and waste their mobility.
You would have to manually detach them from the formation every time.

A Scouting Force is the first to make contact with the enemy, as you have seen before with ADOBO.
If a Battle Cruiser was the one to do it, they could do a lot more damage in the opening salvo instead of having to wait for the BB division to catch up.

Wait.
This actually makes sense.

Our Standard Fleet Tactic is basically having Cruisers do everything alone so this is a natural development of that.
We don't use DDs for scouting at all, so Cruisers have to develop their own scouting methodologies.

That is a weirdly appropriate random research to proc.

Yours is a weird enough campaign as it is.

84.3 WAR! - Spain vs Italy and Austria-Hungary - mid-month events

Good news.
Austrians have submarine tech as their national advantage.

The Italians still have subs at this point?

If it wasn't for losing submarines every turn for no readily discernible reason, I really would like to experience how well a submarine-heavy force performs compared to their weight in battleships.

Oh no.
This is bad.

Consequences for your decisions coming home?

QUICK! A DISTRACTION!

85.2 AFTER ACTION REPORT - Coastal Raid on Eastern Spain

Ugh. Unlike the Italians their DDs don't have the guts.

Odd to say that now.

Italians have earned my respect.

They didn't even bother to trawl the shoreline.
Just a perfunctory in and out.

>> CA ADOBE> Looks like the closest we came into contact was around 18:00.
>> CA ADOBE> But we didn't see anything.

You were about to ram an island.

>> CA ADONTBE> (softly) To be fair, there isn't (yet) a lighthouse on Illa des Penjat.
>> CA ADONTBE> We swept the shoreline with lights to see if there were any ambushers like before.

>> CA ADONTBE> (proudly) I have successfully prevented ADOBO from bombarding the cliffs and fighting the trees.

I have a feeling she'd have lost that fight anyway.

>> CA ADOBO> If I beat THE ROCK I would be world superheavy fights champion!

That's Gibraltar.
We hold Gibraltar.

>> CA ADOBO> Gotta practice on pebbles first?

I don't quite remember, are you our first medium-range submarine?

I don't know what to do with you either, we have enough on Coastal Patrol and Raiding isn't earning much VP.

We could push Italy to the breaking point harder though.

Add to my Dreadnought fund.

Oh shite, I was wrong we do not have enough on Coastal Patrol.

Since apparently 5000 tons of AMC don't do anything to defer being blockaded, let's put them into Raiding duty and see if that causes them any more problems.
That just caused us more problems!

You have been at war for a long time now.
The Spanish Army making such sweeping victories still means many sons of Spain fighting so far from home.

Submarines suffucating mah shipping!

I should have put all of them in the Mediterranean.

87.1 WAR! - Raid on Enemy Coastal Shipping around Sibenik

>> CA ADOBO> Sink one ship?
>> CA ADOBO> Simple enough. A little boring even.

There's two BC here somewhere and you are both 1899 ships with max speed of 21 knots.

>> CA ADOBO> But Battle Cruisers have thin hulls anyway.

I remember the BC ZRINYI and it has an eleven-inch belt.

>> CA ADOBO> Blargh.

>> CA ADOBO> Fiiine. If you wanna be boring about it.
>> CA ADOBO> You know what would be nice? Scout floatplanes.

No that would make it worse.
Information is power.

>> CA ADOBE> We can only rely on our training for scouting.

>> CA ADOBE> I made cookies.

>> CA ADOBO> Got em.

>> CA ADONTBE> That... seems to be a Trader silhouette.

>> CA ADOBO> DIVE! DIVE! AWOOGA! AWOOGA!

Stop jinxing things!

87.2 WAR! - Raid on Enemy Coastal Shipping around Sibenik

>> CA ADOBO> GET OVER HERE.

>> CA ADONTBE> Peace be with you.

Oh look another one.

Bueno.

>> CA ADONTBE> Sleep, dear child, sleep.
>> CA ADONTBE> You don't have to be afraid of anything anymore.

>> CA ADOBO> This one too.
>> CA ADOBO> GO DOWN!

>> CA ADOBE> Well that's done.
>> CA ADOBE> What next?

*CA ADOBO notices shell splashes.

>> CA ADOBO> Oy what's this?
>> CA ADOBO> Think we could get some more VP from taking out coastal installations?

>> CA ADONTBE> Wait... too fast...
>> CA ADONTBE> Don't get too far ahead of me.
>> CA ADONTBE> I'm squadron leader, you know.

>> CA ADONTBE> Ouchies.

Why are they shooting at ADONTBE instead of ADOBO right in front of them?
Annoying ship is being annoying.

>> CA ADOBO> You guys just suck at aiming!

Enough of this nonsense.
It's a waste of our ammo to batter down coastal defenses.

I've been told that, like fairies and coastal defense gunboats, they just magically pop out again in the morning after being destroyed.
