A Lost Soul (Warhammer 40k/Isekai)

Remember first impressions are everything.

Anyone else get the feeling we're about to go John Wick on some Mushrooms?

I should remind you guys that using The Forgotten Soldier will break the armor upon use.

[X] Ignore the voice and let them take you to wherever it is you're going

Given the overall tech level and manufacturing of this group getting decent armor is going to be difficult.

Do we even know who the frak this is lads? I guess it might not be a malicious entity but we always have to be careful with Warp shenanigans!

Otherwise we would get a notice/warning of corruption stats as we did with the raider lance

So what do we have to do?

-claim this place as our new domain
-build up infrastructure
-increase pur combat and our domain skills

'For the Emperor they cried, charging in waves at creatures formed from tortured souls and the worst nightmares a human mind can conjure. For the Emperor they cried, pulling pins from grenades in the final moments of martyrdom as daemons sought their souls. For the Emperor he cried, chainsword clutched in hand as he shoved me down the elevator shaft and charged.

For the Emperor no one cries, they're all dead and soon I will be too. Will you tell the kids about me Jenna? Will you tell my brothers I died gloriously Ma? Will the Emperor really save my soul? No, no one remembers Pete...'

Last words of Trooper Pete, a soldier forgotten.

[X] Answer the question. (Use The Forgotten Soldier.)

"Do you remember my name?"

Again the voice calls faintly, the air stirring around your fingertips as you stare at the battle with a sense of grim determination that rapidly tears at the veil shrouding your emotions. Each pull makes the sadness clearer, every shred torn free makes the fear send your heart racing faster, and along side them both comes an anger you had been suppressing since you arrived in this world. It was unjust, cruel, heartless, and utterly mad and you were fucking pissed at it. Furrowed brow and scowl upon your face, you replied to the incessant call,

"Yes, Pete, I remember."

Every word spoken seems to slow the world around you, Cadius and Charlie slowing to a crawl in their argument even as the battle beyond comes to a halt. Orcs stand frozen mid-blow, humans standing valiantly beneath their strikes as they protect the comrades around them. Atop the walls archers and crossbowmen fire beyond into an unseen horde of green, arrows and bolt trapped in mid flight. A literal rain of bullets seems to crawl through the air above at a pace barely discernible to the human eye.

And yet, the most notable of it all is the youth currently standing in front of you with a smile. Familiar armor adorning his body, light blue eyes shining as they look at you with approval, and a hand placed reassuringly on your shoulder.

"Thanks for listenin' earlier, Ma always told me ta help people find their path and all. Nice ta meet ya, finally, was frustrating when you couldn't hear me.

Ya know, bein' a Blank is a pain in the ass, don't have a soul or any of that jazz really which has made death a really odd experience. Fun fact for ya! At least in my case, me havin' no soul was kind of replaced with there being a me shaped hole in existence that didn't go away when I died, though I think Arcadius' had somethin' ta do with that."

Your previously concocted plan to unleash wrath and destruction comes apart as you listen to the kid cheerfully chatter about information that would make Inquisitors foam at the mouth. Yet there he stood, doing it all with a grin that you can only describe as stupid spread across his face, cutting away the tension you didn't even know you cared with you. A laugh escapes him as you visibly relax, the grin somehow growing wider as he furiously beats on your shoulder in a manner far more painful than your previous experience.

"Ya gotta lighten up friend, world's dark enough without the rest of us losin' it. Besides, makes the bastard with the skulls stronger or some such, least that's what Arc told me back in the day, pity about what happened though."

He shrugs his shoulder as he pulls you to his side and wraps his arm around your neck, his free hand pointing towards the now perfectly still scenery.

"Neat trick right? No frakin' clue why it's doin' that, just figured I'd point it out. Would've liked ta learn about it, but..."

For the first time since Pete appeared in front of you the grin slips from his face, the teen now showing you a stoic expression as he lightly taps against your chest drawing your attention to your armor. At some point it began to quite literally disintegrate, a small piece of it turning to dust with every passing moment even in this utterly still world.

"We ain't got much time do we? Ya can't remember ya name, so I'll just stick with Augustus for this. Thank ya, Augustus, for rememberin' me. I've been waitin' a long time for someone ta answer me, too long honestly. Was hangin' on by a thread when ya found me, started to get tired of all the fightin' ya know? Every time this rock crossed back over it just started all over a-

Eh, it doesn't matter. Listen, I just want ta sleep, but they were all here needin' help and how was I gonna look Jenna or the kids in the eye if I left them? Just do me a favor after this, I know ya want ta be a King or some such, but ya ain't much of a King if ya abandon those in need."

At the last word he reaches out and takes his lasgun, your lasgun, from Charlie's still hands before pressing it into your own and shoving you forward towards the battle. Stumbling forward, you quickly regain your footing just as you arrive between the arguing pair and the world suddenly starts to move again. A voice faintly calls from behind you, but you don't look back. You know there's no reason to now.

"Least, that's what I think, ya know?"

A brilliant golden window opens in the air in front of you as the sound of the arguing duo reaches your ears,

"No, Charlie, you've the least experience out of the squad."

"Come on Sarge, you know I can do- Where did the lasgun go? Wait, when did you get here Augustus?"

The Forgotten Soldier
Pete was forgotten to time, an anomaly that should not have existed as a being that had no soul and yet continued to exist beyond death through a string of coincidences, both engineered and accidental. For hundreds of years he watched over the small portion of the starship he died upon, cycling between a ghost like existence in the Materium and a constant state of war when the hulk journeyed into the Warp.

He turned the place of his death into a grave for those who died where he could walk and watched over it with care, taking up his weapon every time the madness of the Warp sought to corrupt the final resting place of many a brave soul. Eventually no daemon dare to step foot in the grave of the lost, an instinctive fear flourishing within those that even dared to contemplate defiling the cavern.

However, time is a fickle things to all and even more so for those that simply were not meant to exist in the first place. His time has drawn to an end, but in those final moments he has been remembered.

The Forgotten Soldier is no longer lost, his memories carrying on beside you for a brilliant moment to announce one thing.

"Guardsman Pete lived."

Temporarily gain the trait Expert Marksman (+25 to ranged combat rolls.)
Temporarily gain the trait Duelist (+20 to melee combat rolls.)
Temporarily gain the trait Awe Inspiring (Pete is a light that shown without anyone to watch, now all can see. +15 to allied morale rolls, -10 to enemy morale rolls.)
Temporarily gain the trait True Blank (Wherever you go the world is forced into it's true shape, the Warp is cast aside and psychic influences are battered back at your presence.)
Temporarily gain the trait Tireless (You do not grow tired.)
Temporarily gain the trait Unbreakable (You cannot fail morale or mental tests.)
Temporarily gain the trait Guardian Spirit (Any time a roll would result in an injury roll a 1d100, anything above 50 completely nullifies the attack.)

Effective for one hour.

You crack a smile in response, raising the lasgun with one hand as you reply to the confused figures of Cadius and Charlie,

"Figured you lot could use some help."

Completely unaware of the fact that a halo of white light was spreading from behind you, one that gave a sense of calm and comfort to those it shown upon, you take a step towards the battle as your mind stirs to action.

Battle within the Wall
Ranged Attack Round 1:
72 + 25 (Expert Marksman) + 10 (Forgotten Soldier's Lasgun) = 107 vs 67 + 10 (Ork Tenacity) + 15 (Numerous Targets) - 10 (Surprise Attack) = 82
Eight breeches in the outer wall, thirty orks broken through, all occupied in attacking the humans around them. Three killed.

Ranged Attack Round 2: 14 + 35 (Combined Bonus) = 49 vs 96 + 15 (Ork Combined Bonus) = 111
Response Roll: d20 = 13
Defender's Roll: 89 + 8 (Trained Soldiers) = 97 vs 87 + 10 (Ork Tenacity) = 97
No kills, orks very much aware of your existence and thirteen of them think you would make a better fight. Five are stopped by defenders, the rest slaughter their way through and charge.

Ranged Attack Round 3: 57 + 35 (Combined Bonus) = 92 vs 31 + 25 (Combined Bonus, Surprise malus no longer in effect) = 56
Five charging orks killed, three enter into a melee with you.

Melee Attack Round 1: 53 + 3 (Combat Knife) + 20 (Duelist) = 76 vs 97 + 10 (Ork Tenacity) + 10 (Outnumbered) = 117
Guardian Spirit Roll: 92
Fail to mount a counterattack, several strikes land only to be shrugged off by an unseen force.

Melee Attack Round 2: 58 + 23 (Combined Bonus) = 82 vs 15 + 20 (Ork Combined Bonus) = 35
You practically dissect your three attackers with relative ease.

Siege of the Connection

Machine Gun Nests: 78 + 15 (Heavy Weapon Crews) = 93 vs 4 + 10 (Ork Tenacity) + 15 ('ERE WE GO!) = 29
Human Archers/Crossbowmen: 55 + 8 (Trained Soldiers) = 63 vs 41 + 10 (Ork Tenacity) + 15 ('ERE WE GO!) = 66
Human Defenders: 36 + 8 (Trained Soldiers) = 44 vs 49 + 10 (Ork Tenacity) + 15 ('ERE WE GO!) = 69
Machine Gun teams reap a heavy toll on the orks, archers and crossbowmen struggle to have an effect under attack from ork ranged units, and the soldiers on the ground take moderate casualties under a renewed Ork assault.

Allied Morale Roll: 23 + 15 (Awe Inspiring) + 10 (Inspiring Act ) = 48
Allied forces shaken due to mounting casualties, but still hold thanks to your act of cutting orks down like grass.

Gained 5 Tokens of War. x8

In one smooth motion your lasgun is brought to bear, guided by experience and memories that feel all too real despite being not your own, and you quickly lay your sights on the best targets. Held down by the brave soldiers engaged in a brutal melee with them, tens of orks stand encircled by dozens of human warriors bearing weapons from a long past era.

It is with remarkable ease that you adjust your aim slightly, a slight tug of your trigger sending a resounding crack echoing through the din of combat followed almost instantaneously by a chunk of Ork face vaporizing. A slight shift in your arms, a minuscule turning of your waist even as you take another step forward, and two more shots quickly follow casting a dim red light on the bloodshed they pass. Incomprehensible screams of pain tear from your targets only to be swiftly silenced by a wall of spears turning the wounded greenskins into pincushions.

However, your next attacks fail spectacular as the sudden shifts in battle cause shots to land on masses of non-vital muscle, or even to miss entirely before impacting harmlessly on the defenses behind. Your brief ambush came to a crashing end as several of the green humanoid behemoths turned to you in near unison, their bodies ignoring blows from soldiers gathered around them as one of the brutes sees fit to shout.

"Now 'dat looks like a gud fight, 'dat 'umie iz mine!"

A laughable claim considering it is met by a shout of disagreement from the Ork next to him, followed shortly by an uppercut that sends the bold Ork flying into the midst of several regrouping spear-men. You stop in place even as the majority of the orks within the walls batter their way through whatever forces encircle them leaving a path of blood and gore in their wake. Snorting, you mutter before switching the lasgun to full auto,

"A good fight? Hate to break it, but I'm cheating."

Your muttered words are underlined by a rapid staccato cracking, your eyes swimming with faint spots as a barrage of lasers turn a number of the charging orks into a charred mess. Smoke pours off wounds and flaming 'clothing' while the air is suddenly overwhelmed with a heavy scent of roasted meat and-

'Why the hell do they actually smell like mushrooms?'

Before you can truly delve into the stray thought that crosses your awareness you find yourself surrounded by three slobbering, screaming, and utterly disgusting Orks. Struggling to adjust to the overwhelming sensations the three bring, you find yourself backpedaling as you barely manage to free your knife from it's pocket. Two of them land strikes squarely, a crude club with chunks of uneven rock embedded in sliding across your chest with the faintest impact while the Ork equivalent of an axe seems to land squarely on your head only to shatter.

You almost laugh at the dumbstruck figures they strike, both staring with absolute confusion at the weapons (or remains in one case) in their hand trying to understand why it didn't work. However, something seems to push your forward as the air twists along the arm clutching your knife, guiding it to lance upward and straight into the now weaponless Ork's eye. A blur seems to pass by your eyes, your body moving on instinct as it weaves between punches and strikes to lash out at every joint or weak point in view.

In the end you lose count of the number of times you strike out, but at the end of it you find yourself standing in the middle of three unrecognizable and immobile figures. Staring at the scene in shock, you muster a single question,

"What the Hell have you been doing Pete?"

Your attention is returned to the battlefield with the sudden renewed storm of the machine guns above and the dying screams of those still fighting at the outer wall. Taking the scene in within moments, you find the battle on the ground turning for the worst as an even greater number of Orks pour into the few holes in the wall and the ranged troops above are suppressed by a sudden hail of return fire. It is borderline maddening to listen to, your strengthened hearing picking out cries for help and the dying gasps of the injured amidst the sounds of battle.

'... What the fuck do I do now?'

[] If the soldiers on the ground lose then this battle is pretty much lost, if you seal one of them yourself then the pressure on the rest should let them turn things around.
[] Pete's boon gave you a rather incredible skill with your lasgun. Perhaps it would be best if you took to the wall and began to tear through the Orks from above.
[] Fuck this battle, fuck this day, and gods damn these Orks. Enough playing around, challenge the ork boss to a fight and kill that massive green bastard. You're cheating anyway, might as well make good use of it.
