A Lost Soul (Warhammer 40k/Isekai)

Tech level. What is the average tech level of the Nortrain military? I'm not talking about the elite Vanguard or the stationary machine guns they have, what kind of weapons are being used by the bog-standard Nortrain soldier? Are firearms common or are they something given only to veteran/elite units? If they are rare, can we gain enough production ability to supply them with guns? Can we go even further? How far can we go with the System? 21st century? GAOT? Further?

Basic doctrine and equipment for Nortrain has a front line squad being a mix of half swords, half spears. Spear Soldiers keep the enemy at a distance, pin in targets, attempt to lock an enemy in place with their weapons and body weight while Sword Soldiers act as the finishing blow for those the spear wielders pin as well as acting as primary combatants. Squad commanders are armed with stub weaponry, or reserved for elite forces and even then they are used rather sparingly.

When it comes to production ability for pretty much anything everything depends on the size of your Holding(s), the number of subjects, and whatever you all choose to construct. You can get a glimpse of the difference the System can provide in the Farmland comparison to non-System farm plots, almost able to fit three Farmland in the space of one conventional real world plot meaning (roughly) triple the output. As for how far the System can take you tech wise that is entirely a mystery at the moment though revealed details have stated it at the least can reach the Industrial Revolution's era of tech.

Nope. Word of QM is that taking a big ambition gives quests and rewards proportional to what can do. That's it.

Ultimately I'm seeing this ambition mechanic as a QM way of saying "What do you want to do?" It's a tool to keep us from turtling and doing nothing interesting, and eventually killing the game. Going big right off the bat will let us focus on that and give us an actual ambition our character around, instead of taking baby steps and being lost when we complete our current 'quest.'

Also I'm fairly sure there are ways of changing the ambition if things are needed. Ultimately this mechanic is simply a way of stating what we want and rewarding us for working towards it. It's a way to prevent stagnation.

To be honest I'm fairly sure we're going to go down the 'saint' route anyway. It's how we're going already and how people tend to vote towards. Might as well codify it.
Completing Ambitions will grant rewards all it's own, separate from those earned from completing Milestones, and the size of that reward also scales with how early you lock into it since going from running a small farm to essentially taking the Emperor's space upon the Golden Throne is a far more remarkable overall achievement than going from King of a sector spanning empire to sitting upon that same Throne. You can do it piecemeal with smaller, scaling Ambitions to obtain those final completion gains if you want as well, either path has it's pros and cons.

When it comes to changing ambitions there are essentially two ways to do that, you either complete an Ambition or you can fail to accomplish an Ambition which will bring about some degree of penalties. Furthermore, Salvation and Tyranny are not mutually exclusive. You can build both and walk a more middle of the road line if you want and they will both bring their own benefits or maluses into play as they grow.

As a side note: You are right in that the Ambition feature is meant to reward players for following plans they lay out, but it isn't really meant to prevent stagnation or specifically aim you in a direction. Merely rewarding following a path you've already set out for yourselves as I pretty much always intended for this game to be pretty free form when it comes to player choice, I'm just enjoying writing the story you all want to try and tell.

Events will still occur in the galaxy at large, but I would still find it pretty enjoyable if you all decided that the space hulk was as far as you wanted to go and spent the rest of the game turning it into some strange paradise in the middle of nowhere. I just create the world from the lore I know with a few twists here and there, at the end of the day what you all make of it is up to your choices.

I would like to have a martini henry rifle, of course an optimized very robust version, because the martini henry has a fairly large caliber and is easy to reload and that is important against orcs.

The ammunition is not too complicated to manufacture and can be used with black powder and smokeless powder.

Black powder is easier to manufacture.

I'm sort of drawn to the idea of a tiny ambition; like, a laughably small one, "exit the farmhouse tomorrow", just so that we'd be able to get more information on the elusive System: will it no-sell this obvious chicanery? will it accept the request and give us a single piece of manure for our efforts? how many milestones would it set for such a doughty ambition?

Like, we have this system, but we tend to get blind-sided by it doing anything, I'd really like to see if we could learn a bit more about how and why it operates.

We checked, the smallest ambition is around the scale of "take over this town", or "make permanent change in this town's practices" or "take over the regional economy".

The absolute smallest and least collateral damage ambition is the Workshop one...which with the Mechanicus, is effectively "take over local innovation"

An Echo of Long Dead Anger
An Echo of Long Dead Anger

All around lay walls of stone that once resembled the inky black of the void of space. Long ago they had been defiled by arcane symbols that would make lesser beings eyes to bleed as their minds to fragmented at the mere sight, layers of dried blood, scraps of flesh, and strange mixture of liquids in a variety of revolting shades. A layer of roiling flesh had begun to crawl along the walls, the strange beauty of the stone underneath hidden by the hideous mess it's occupants had tried so studiously to spread throughout all the structure. Resting at the heart of the chamber are the remains of some mechanical being and a pedestal formed from flesh and bone, it's sides covered in blinking eyes and hungry mouths that had stilled their endless snapping before the figure in front of them.

A head whose skin is stretched tight by the tubes and corruption so readily lingering upon it, stares down from it's position towering above the pedestal as brilliant golden eyes spark with flickers of green, blue, red, and purple that seem to writhe in agony as they appear before being snuffed from existence. Clad in armor of black and bronze, strange tendril like masses shifting between joints, covered in the foul symbols of Dark Gods the figure peered down at the object resting upon the pedestal even as it's clawed grasp digs deeper into the mass of flesh. Trails of blood seep from newly opened wounds, mouths opening to scream only to burst into flames that shifted colors with every slight change in focus, and yet the figure remained unmoved as it looked to the shattered haft resting before it.

"Foolish. Even as you betrayed him you still carried the weapon he had forged at your side, unable to let go of that smallest of thoughts even as the Gods offered you everything. You could have wielded wrath incarnate, decay given form, deathly pleasure dancing to a shape, or even a fragment of the unknowable truth made manifest."

At his words the mass of flesh covering much of the chamber began to shake, tendrils peeling from it to wrap around the figure's armored feet as an ear piercing screech began to echo through the room. Thin strips of armor gave way at the merest touch from the tendrils and the pedestal began to weep tears of blood at the sound, but the man himself remain unperturbed as he stared at the shattered remnants of an age long past.

"Only I was more foolish than you. I should have ripped Worldbreaker from your hands and broke you with it, given the corpse of you at your peak to the Dark Gods and claimed my rightful place as Their Chosen rather than allow you to waste it."

His grip grew stronger, the bone of the pedestal cracking and flesh shredding even as lightning began to crackle across the bladed claws of the gauntlet which inflicted untold agony upon it even as the piercing screech of the chamber's fleshy carpet reached an ever greater height.

"HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BROKEN BENEATH YOU, THE GALAXY SHOULD HAVE BURNED!"

Rage took a hold of him as the pedestal groaned, fleshy tendrils tearing ever faster at the armored boots that trod upon them, and flames began to join the crackling electricity flowing up the armored figure's arm. Upon the pedestal the remains of the once magnificent Worldbreaker began to shake as a singing cacophony of noise that would leave mortals a gibbering mass of melted flesh poured from it. In an instant the pedestal upon which it rested turned to vaporized ash, multi colored smoke wafting from where it once stood as the haft of Worldbreaker plummeted into an excitedly waiting maw of thousands of teeth.

"I DO NOT SPEAK TO YOU! YOU DARE SPEAK FOR HE WHO HAS BEEN WIPED FROM EXISTENCE!? DO YOU STILL CLING SO TIGHTLY TO YOUR FAILURE OF A MASTER?"

Screaming rage the figure lashed the flaming and crackling claw against the haft being chewed within the maw of uncountable teeth, bone shattering into dust at the strike as the carpet of flesh recoils in a psyche melting screech of pain only for the remains of Worldbreaker to remain unmarred upon the spotless stone revealed beneath. Just as the lights flickering into the figure's eyes begin to grow more predominantly red, the armored man beginning to lose himself in anger, a synthesized voice broke the mad chattering of the chamber causing all to lapse into silence.

Held aloft by several barrel sized masses of undulating muscle and machinery, a figure clad in robes that gnawed at themselves stalked into the room,

"Warmaster. We have finished our research. Truly fascinating, the vast monoliths covering dozens of worlds are indeed a design crafted by the beings known as Necron and their resonance is one of defiance against the wonders of the Wa-"

In an instant the figure falls silent, the sound of screeching metal and exploding air coming from the clasped claw the Warmaster had raised in response.

"Discard the mindless prattling. Are they what we suspected?"

"Yes, Warmaster. The Pylons hold back the Eye of T-"

In an instant the voice is drowned out by the carpet of flesh beginning it's screech once more, the mass beneath the newly arriving figure surging upwards as tendrils tore chunks free and suddenly emerging maws bit entire sections from the Heretek. Cries of agony and pain, the mechanical screeching of binaric chant, and the reality warping dying gasps of daemons fill the air in a symphony of suffering that sets a smile to the Warmaster's lips. It all ends as abruptly as it started, the roiling flesh returning to writhe gently upon the floor as any sign of it's prey had long disappeared within mouths long shrouded within.

"Come, Drach'nyen."

Giddy cries echo from the carpet of flesh as it pours itself excitedly to the now outstretched hand of the Warmaster. Flesh piling together and twisting as the shape of a blade slowly takes shape, the metal becoming clearer and clearer as the daemon face upon the guard begins to grin madly at it's owner. In an instant the armored figure is crossing the chamber, but just as he reaches the doorway the Warmaster turns to look back at the corpse of Worldbreaker resting in the center of it all.

"Do not think we are done. I shall break you as surely as that rotting corpse broke him. Now, rest and watch as I do what your Master could not. Watch as I set the galaxy aflame and laugh in the burning ruins, and then you shall know."

With those words Abaddon the Despoiler, Warmaster of Chaos, and Master of the Black Legion left the scrap of Horus' weapon where it lay. Maddening laughter echoed through the defiled halls as a scheme Millennia in the making began to truly unfold.

QM Note:
Voting now open.

well shit...also we need to wipe out the genestealers and their cults in our area...

also more blanks, maybe with the kings sytem we can turn humanity into false blanks one day. Its harsh to deny humanity the future of physic god-hood...but with the warp as it is?

it will never come to pass...so better to rely on reality bending powers and communal blank-humanity then this.

the problem is that chaos isnt the only threath

you have ctans too whose only weakness are

1) hyper advanced necron tech that not even DAOT mankind had

2) powerful psiquic powers and psy-tech

if we want to avoid getting raped by ctan made malware in our tech we need some degree of psy-tech development and psykers
still,the end goal should be having total control over both power and rate of psyker and pariahs births through gene and warp engineering

Separating the Ambition vote because it isn't really integral to the plan part and it'd be unfair to hook up plans to it.

Thrones: 4,900 -> 4,000
Fealty: 10 -> 5
Wood: 28 -> 23
Stone: 35 -> 30
Size: 9/10 -> 10/10
Housing: 11/13 -> 11/17

[X][Ambition] To secure the safety and rights of the abhumans of Nortrain, as peer to the human population of Nortrain.

[X] Plan Fealty Rate Up
-[X][Holding] House(+4 Housing, -5 Wood, -5 Stone, -5 Fealty)
-[X] Work on picking apart the information Arcadius' left behind on his datapad. Cross referencing, filtering, and educated assumptions galore. Why couldn't the asshole write it outright? (Difficulty 40/80, 6 out of 8 Successes)
-[X] You discovered a plot of Threadvines ready for harvesting and a lot of your followers lack work anyway. Time to get to work.
-[X] Acquire some logging equipment for your followers to begin claiming some of the vast bounty of the forest for your own usage. (900 Thrones, gain logging equipment for six people.)
-[X] Cassandra's experiments with you need to be finished if you want that cloned arm from the Genetor, time to get plugged up to a machine again. (Difficulty 30/60/90/120, 7/10 progress, +30 to next attempt.)
-[X] Explore the city, you only saw a slim portion of it when you first visited. (Choose two, can be taken multiple times.)
--[X] Head to see the fortress that Julius spoke of which apparently protects Nortrain from invasion.
--[X] Such a large population center should have a seedier side, take a look around back alleys for it in case you have some goods to offload later.
-[X] You know where the Imperial Cult church is and despite you rather concerning encounter with a very suspect priest during the Time of Mourning it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the local version of the Imperial Cult. (???)
-[X] You've been doing a good job establishing ties with the Mechanicus and given Rowena is the Governor here perhaps its time you look to improving your position with her and the Administratum. (???)
-[X] You have quite a large logging camp and far from enough hands to work them, time to find some people to work it.
--[X] Recruit from the Abhumans.
-[X] Your bow can have a Legacy attached to it even if you can't use it now it might be worth it.
--[X] Attach The White Flame Legacy to your bow.

Okay, with the House this turn we can house 6 more people,or maybe 3 Ogryn? That makes it worth doing recruiting again.
But before doing the hiring visit the Ministorium and the Administratum to get some basic clearance first, get the Threadvines brought in and turned to thread so we can sell them.
And of course, buy the gear to log with.

What about attaching The White Flame to the bow? we could theoretically get our arm back this turn if the completion of Cassandra's study results in the arm grafting itself, and if so, we might need to use the bow unexpectedly.

Could probably get some rights for the Abhuman/Mutants if we get our friendship high enough with the local Imperial Cult and Administratum.

Maybe a factory town kinda relationship? Those who work for us get better treatment by the wider public due to their connection to us? And the higher echelons would accept it if they get a higher tithe on our production plants that use said Abhumans/Mutants?

Okay, sure. Not like we got anything else to attach to.

Remember to vote for ambitions separately guys. Its not in the plan.

I'd spend that last 5 Fealty on Land Expansion. We'll need to do it next turn anyway. If Fealty income goes from +10 to +16 if we fill up the Houses we can get yet another House and maybe add Farmland. Then we'd only miss the Quarry to finish the next quest. Including 50 Fealty we can use to really push expansion.

We should push for Meritocracy and an Imperial Truth addition to the Imperial Cult.

Promote the Emulation of the Emperor and Ascend Individually and as a species!

To be a Human like the Emperor is to ever reach upwards and improve in all things!

[X][Ambition] To control all of Nortrain.

I'm thinking a mid-level ambition here would be the best. Not aiming too low, but neither is it aiming far past the stars. Accomplishing this would essentially secure abhuman rights as well. Once this ambition is done we can redirect to something grander, with a secured powerbase.
