[X] Pewter City - Generally considered the starter city for gym trainers, the highest challenge it can provide is a 5-badge fight, but there's no rule saying it can't hold an 8-badge fight. It would take two weeks to travel there, however.

ut at this point catching one would add a third Steel-type to our team giving half our team a common weakness to Fire-types in addition to it lacking a distinct identity on the team meaning it'd never be used since it does the exact same thing as Forretress, and nothing else.
Personally I'm fine with it. If type specialists (the top tier ones, at least) couldn't hack it in the face of type disadvantages they probably wouldn't be a thing, culturally speaking.

Alright, that's great, but what about the other half of that sentence? The part where we'll probably just end up neglecting it because it has the same role as Forretress meaning there's never a reason to put it on our team rather than our seventh or eighth Pokemon.

Whoops my bad. I just want a Skarmory honestly, I'm not thinking too hard about anything else.

But if we can't find different roles between a groundbound steel bug and a flying steel bird something has gone wrong with our collective creative juices.

It doesn't really have anything to do with what they are but rather what they can do since they were both designed to fulfil the same role with slightly different properties to differentiate them. As if we compare the two, Forretress is a supportive physical wall with better phasing, and hazard and terrain control while Skarmory is a supportive physical wall with a better recovery move, greater access to buffing moves such as Tailwind, an actually half-decent offensive move, and a slightly better typing... And, that's it that's all the real differences between the two.

So, if we have two Pokemon with near-identical move sets, stats, and typing what's there left to form two distinct identities with for the team? The dregs are the answer as we'd have to somehow chop together a sweeper Skarmory set with mediocre stats and all of one half-decent offensive move. Except Dragonite already fulfills the Flying-type sweeper role vastly better than Skarmory does and knows all his buffing moves on top of that so even what you can collect from the dregs that Forretress leaves Skarmory is an identity which amounts to nothing on our team.

[X] Cinnabar Island - A large island with a gym, the leader is rather eccentric which makes it difficult for even experienced trainers. However, a migration of Skarmory is in the area which isn't a common occurrence.

By the way, what pokemon are planning to catch for our team besides Skarmory if we're going to Pewter or is that for later?

Preferably we don't catch a Skarmory for the reasons I've mentioned before. But in terms of what Pokemon we do want to catch well we're generally looking for an offensive Pokemon that is good at dealing with Fighting, Fairy, and Dragon types as we already have three supportive Pokemon and those are the last of the types with really strong Pokemon we could struggle to deal with. Those requirements leave us with quite a narrow list of Kanto Pokemon which mostly boil down to Gengar and Lapras on account of the former being immune to Fighting and Normal-type moves along with super-effective coverage for Fairy-types well the latter is quite bulky and one of Kanto's few Ice-types.

Preferably Gengar is our sixth Pokemon typically as powerful Fighting-type moves are common along with Fighting-types typically being disproportionally prominent on earlier generation teams due to an overabundance of Fighting-type weaknesses in earlier regions which compounds his value as a special sweeper and his utility as an anti-carry. But we'll probably catch Lapras first at this rate simply due to how we'll be travelling through the region which is fine but Lapras would typically sit in our seventh slot, and only swap into fights against teams with troublesome Dragon-types or teams that either of Blissey or Forretress aren't as good into such as the opposing team fielding lacklustre Physical or Special sweepers or fielding plenty of Fire-type coverage since Lapras can pull double duty as both an offensive and supportive Pokemon.

The eighth slot would ideally go to a powerful Fighting-type to abuse that prominence of Fighting-type weaknesses in strong Pokemon that I mentioned before, and while that exists in Kanto in the form of Machamp I'd personally prefer to sit on this team slot for a while until we can pick up a Breloom as well we'd lose a bit of damage we'd in exchange get a significantly bulkier Pokemon as Breloom is a drain tank that also offers us Grass-type coverage, and significant utility in the form of Spore as a sleep move.

Violet felt herself fade into the background as Officer Jenny asked them question after question. It was at times like this that she truly appreciated Willow. Having an extrovert around to interact with others made things a lot easier. Not to mention that Willow did half the work during their battle with Stuart, so it wasn't like Officer Jenny was missing out on much.

The officer herself was bemused to receive a call from the two of them. In her words, "Normally when I see someone this much, it's not a good thing." They had caught several Rockets on their way to Celadon, and now they had caught several Rockets on their way out of Celadon. Officer Jenny was certainly appreciative based on her gift of two TMs to Violet (Taunt and Fire Blast) and two TMs to Willow (Volt Switch and Substitute). Additionally, Officer Jenny did read them in on some of the discoveries the League had made during the breakout by the Rockets.

It appeared that Team Rocket had been clashing with Team Galactic in a few locations, although the reason for it was unknown. Thus far the League had been able to determine that the clashes near Celadon were Team Rocket pushing Team Galactic out of the Kanto Region. Moreover, one of the captured Rockets did reveal that they had recently paid a visit to Sinnoh for unknown purposes. As a result, Cynthia had offered the possibility of a joint operation with trainers from the Kanto region, but due to various political realities, the Kanto Pokemon League and Lance jointly refused.

Investigations were in progress, with a joint effort from Sabrina and Surge leading the charge. Giovanni himself explained that he had been away from his gym for too long to participate, but that he would provide monetary and logistical support for whatever was needed. That bit of news made Willow perk up. She had been hiding her irritation well, but it was clear that she feared that Giovanni would once more close the Viridian Gym for weeks. Violet made a mental note that after she defeated the Pewter City Gym they would head back to Viridian City.

The two of them had agreed to travel to Pewter City where Violet would pick up her fifth badge. The travel path was subject to some debate with Violet initially favoring traveling on more understood routes via Viridian City. Willow, however, pointed out that she had already made that journey and was hoping for something different. Not to mention that would mean traveling through the Viridian Forest twice. Therefore, it was better to travel northwest through Gardenia Town before resting at Cremini Town for a few days before making it to Pewter City.

It was a solid argument, and Violet felt like it had been a while since she had a proper hike. As such, the two girls found themselves hiking through the hills past Gardenia Town over four days. During this they encountered a sight that stuck with both of them.

Spearow was a very common Pokemon in Kanto, even if it wasn't represented at the highest levels of Pokemon battles. From what Violet had heard, Spearow flocks could number in the thousands, with a few unconfirmed reports claiming that they could blot out the skies.

While Violet and Willow could safely say the latter wasn't true, they could confirm that the size of a Spearow flock could be massive. When they were a day out from Cremini Town, the two girls paused and looked up, staring as thousands of Pokemon flew over their heads in search of new food sources within the forests. Violet herself took several pictures, marveling at the sheer number of both Spearow and Fearow while also making sure she didn't anger them. She was a good trainer, but she wasn't good enough to take on thousands of Pokemon at once. At least not yet.

When they finally arrived in Cremini Town and booked their stay at a small Pokecenter, the two girls relaxed as they planned out what they would do before heading to Pewter City.

The 34th Week, Pick 1

Pokemon Actions

[] Catch your Sixth Pokemon - Now that you have four badges, you could catch another Pokemon providing a full team.
[] Train with your Pokemon - All of your Pokemon are skilled in battle with unique skills, but they can see some improvements through practice. Especially with their new moves.
[] Buy and Use TMs/HMs - You're a big enough trainer to afford TMs and HMs for your Pokemon. Even if the options are rather limited in Cremini Town.
[] Train with Willow- While it would be nontraditional to train with your rival, both of you have unique skill sets that could complement each other.

Battling Actions

[] Challenge New Trainers - Now that you and your Pokemon have developed, fighting a few trainers in rapid succession would be easy.
[] Challenge an Experienced Trainer - There are at least a few experienced trainers around here that may be worth fighting.
[] Challenge Nurse Joy to a Battle - Surprisingly, the local Nurse Joy seems to accept challengers. Moreover, her Blissey is a surprisingly good fighter. It may be interesting to face her.
[] The Battle Tower - One of the Frontier Brains is quite close to Cremini Town. While you are well below the required skill to win a fight with them, they may still accept your challenge.

Exploration Actions

[] See the Sights Inside the City - There are several interesting attractions in Celadon although you have seen many of them before. Still, it may be fun to revisit them.
[] Explore Unorthodox Locations - Celadon City has a lot that you can explore, some of them have been on your list to visit for years. Try and explore them.

Traveling Actions (Must be taken either this turn or the next)

[X] Travel to Pewter City - You and Willow are on a schedule and will be leaving immediately. The route to Pewter City is flat, but extremely forested which may make navigation difficult.

Social Actions (For socials, it's assumed you keep up a basic level of contact through text, choosing a social means I write it up)

[] Call Your Parents - Your parents would as usual like a call when you're free.
[] Call Tetsuya - He just arrived in Fuchsia City and just managed to earn his next gym badge.

[X] Challenge Nurse Joy to a Battle - Surprisingly, the local Nurse Joy seems to accept challengers. Moreover, her Blissey is a surprisingly good fighter. It may be interesting to face her.

I'd prefer to explore over another battle right now but I can at least take solace in not having to battle a Frontier Brain when I already know where our team needs to improve so getting our butt handed to us wouldn't do much. Speaking of when we get to Pewter we should train with our Pokemon so that we can adjust their movesets before we challenge the gym

Alright, in a surprise to me, it seems like you're going to be challenging the local Nurse Joy to a battle. As this is the case, for this battle it's going to be a one-on-one fight mainly as Nurse Joy wants to take it easy. While she enjoys battling a fair bit, she wants to avoid getting too stressed out by a more drawn out fight. As such, she's going to be using her Togekiss for this whose stats can be seen here.

I... Don't really know what to do with this battle. Magneton sadly OHKO's with Flash Cannon so this wouldn't be good training for him but since Nurse Joy wants a quick battle none of our other Pokemon work. As Blissey for example the Pokemon I'd want to use this battle as training for would only win via stall thanks to Togekiss knowing Roost. Dragonair would have been an option for this battle if he'd been able to learn Fire Blast, and it would have been great training for him as well but sadly that's not the case so sending him in just to spam Wrap before going down in a few rounds as Togekiss out heals his damage is pointless for his development.

Umbreon is in the same boat as Dragonair but Forretress can actually win this fight with two Rapid Spins and a Self Destruct except that doesn't exactly do much for her development either. And, all of that kind of leaves me grasping for straws as even if we have Magneton sandbag slightly by using Electro Ball or something the Togekiss still goes down in only a few rounds meaning Nurse Joy's one condition for the fight has robbed it of any possible value we could have gotten out of it.

Could we use the terrain in this battle? Use the rocks and the dirt to confuse and ground Togekis?
I'm not sure that would do anything, to be frank. I think I'll just send in Blissey regardless since she and Umbreon are probably our two weakest Pokemon right now and just play the fight per normal until Nurse Joy calls it off because it's taking too long as that optimizes the gains our team can make from it.

So, due to my schedule today, I'm going to have to delay the update to Friday. As it is relevant, I will say that Nurse Joy is going to avoid using healing moves unless you use them as well. Mainly as she wants a shorter fight, and healing through it wouldn't contribute to that either.
