It is the final days of the Goden Age of Technology. Warp Storms ravage logistics and worlds alike, rendering interstellar travel fraught with strife. The Men of Iron rage against their creators, brought low by a disease of the mind. Strange and abnormal humans have begun appearing babbling and whimpering at the storm of shrieking pressed hot against their minds, against their very souls. Even the stars in the sky are disappearing from a malignant race delighting in watching Humanity's fall. The coming age shall be dark and brutal. Man against Xenos. Xenos aginst Xenos. Man against Man. A galaxy has gone mad, and in the corners of the Terran federation an isolated collection of systems see clearly the coming storm and rage aginst it.

The Terran Federation is commonly stated to encompass half the Milky Way galaxy, stretching from the homeworld of Earth all the way to the most distant realms of Segmentum Tempestus, Segmentum Pacificus and a small part of Segmentum Pacificus. This is the truth, but it does not tell of the true scale of the Federation. Even in the most distant reaches of the galaxy one can find outposts and ships belonging to our esteemed Federation. The policing and enforcement of quarantines is something that all foreign polities have grumblingly approved of. Numerous Ork hordes, savage Death World species, psychic horrors and weapons of long forgotten wars are best handled by the federation and our superior, navigator assisted, Warp speeds.

The Aeldari to our galactic north used to give aid in this manner, many millennia ago we can surmise from dusty old records and cogitators, but have since turned inwards in a maddening need for sensation and depravity. Indeed there have even been disturbing reports of requests for aid sent from former trading partners of theirs in Segmentum Obscurus. We didn't hear from them again.

Besides the Aelari to our North the enigmatic Rangdan are our only peers and rivals. They do not hold territory in the traditional sense. They thrive in the darkness of interstellar space, indeed there are many minor species of Xenos who don't know or don't believe the Rangdan exist. Nevertheless their mastery of biotechnology, stealth and sensor technology have often had them act as early warning systems for the Federation, allowing us to know of escalating situations as they occur.

Between our two species we are barely covering the duties that the Aeldari used to accomplish with contemptuous ease.

It is the the 24th millennia, and Humanity and its allies are walking on a thin line between salvation and annihilation.

- Taken from the memoirs of the Retired General Otto Relusia, Leader of the 57th Quick Response Fleet.

The Galaxy is burning. Perhaps it was always burning. Burning during the ancient Age of Old Earth, Perhaps burning during the Great Diaspora. Almost certainly burning during the Age of Exodus and the beginning of the Green War. Definitely burning now he thought, as he watched a rift expand and cover an entire planet.

Tygries 3 was an average world of the Federation. Home to windswept plains, cool alpine forests and glistening glaciers. Mankind had found this planet
only 200 years ago. He remembered reading about it on the Noosphere, half-heartedly flicking through discoveries of ancient bacteria present in the forest and various travel commercials starring the planet. And now it was dying. The famed Azure Glaciers of Andura crumbling and breaking apart. Those large and pristine forests burning and falling to the ground. The geological sites and digs set up around the planet fading like a forgotten dream.

The Assistant Technician Wilhelm Tagg watched a planet die and felt a keen sense of loss at something irreplaceable. That planet had existed for two billion years, forming from the catastrophic birth of a star, surviving and eventually growing to harbour complex biological life...and yet. The Assistant Technician babbled something but it sounded distant. He could hear a ringing in his ear, and the distorted cries of the other passengers. Many, he distantly realised, were likely refugees from this planet, taken once they had sensed the Empyreal Veil start to tear upon it.

He raised one of his hands out, almost as if to hold the planet. To will it to keep surviving. Alas, the Galaxy is cruel, and the Warp crueller still. And so the man stood in muted shock, blind and deaf to his yelling superior as the planet cracked apart like a rotten egg, and as he did he could almost make out fangs, and talons and faces.

One of them turned to look at him and smiled.

"For fecks sake, can't anything go right in this godforsaken Galaxy!" The Governor snapped as he considered pouring a glass of brandy, before he thought better of it. There were 300 something billion people depending on him having his head straight and narrow in this ongoing crisis. Once communication was cut between the, hastily named, Besarife Federation had to be quickly formed and numerous censuses ran through some of the few remaining Men of Stone AI that remained following the Cybernetic Revolution. Counting population, worlds, resources and various critical needs taking two days, even for a hyperadvanced artificial intelligence like MS-55. After that various orders and shipments had to be delivered to various planets while various think tanks and research groups were reaised to come up with various substitutes for materials they needed, but didn't have.

Oh how it wore on him, Governor Cincinnatus Vol bemoaned, if only in his own mind, he hadn't even wanted to be the Emergency Governor for this shitfest, he had only ever studied Economics and political theory in order to criticise people in power and to, maybe one day, get his own comedy skit show. Mocking the Government and various Governors practically wrote the material itself, given just how many of said governors there were. Instead he had found himself one of the most capable of the gathered candidates for the job.

He couldn't even give the job to Ganthor due to his blatant xenophobia, in spite of his brilliant statesmanship.

'Really was there nobody else better than me!' He sighed and ran through the numerous proposals sorted through by MS-55. It was only a matter of time before the Warp Storms reached them and cut them off from each other. To that end he had already Raised numerous initiatives and bills designed to increase the ability of the various systems to survive independently, if diminished heavily.

But just surviving wasn't what he was after. The proposals he was look through were those sent in from various Scholas, Research teams, think tanks and artificial intelligences. Plans, longshots really, to salvage the Federation. Or rather, he thought darkly, saving Humanity.

Indeed there were numerous Xenos taking advantage of Mankind's paralysis, only some of which were malicious in nature. In truth the coming calamity was affecting everyone badly. Tensions were Frayed, Resources were low and everyone was at each others throats. Many of the Quick Response Fleets having been cut off from the Government had start pillaging from various Alien powers to survive, powers which were already wary of having them in their space. It didn't take long for various wars to start and the madness to spread like a contagion.

Still, Humanity had survived through everything the Galaxy had to throw at them and would do so again.

Hello and welcome to A Far-Flung Hope, a quest in which you play as a remnant form the Dark Age of Technology. This will be a mostly narrative quest, as nothing kills my will to write like spreadsheets can. You will control this society, from its structure, to its goal, to its technology. First of all we should Flesh out the Age of Technology a bit more, in order to flesh out our remnant.

How did Humanity's expansion past Sol go? Pick One:

[ ] The Age of Silence

During M5 Humanity discovered and decoded various alien signals. To their horror they discovered not only the Warlike Ork, but also an expansionist imperial polity with a penchant for xenocide. In response to this humanity ceased any signals that might reach them and turned inwards. Human Technology could not match either species in a one on one slugging match and thus humanity adapted. The pitch black hulls of humanity became harder to sense, could run longer and became more suited to make the long trip required to reach their enemies. The Human forces disguised themselves as the mythical Aeldari they had decoded from their enemies computers and committed to hit and run tactics, biowarfare and prolonging the war between the two species. They stole technology and data where they could and sent them back in STL ships. Slowly, but surely the two forces were ground down for long enough to reverse engineer warp drive technology.

During and after this age Humanity struck up and odd, if rewarding, friendship with a Rangdan hive ship which shared schools of thought and prodded Humanity in various technological paths.

Pros: Better stealth technology, longer ship longevity and toughness, established hit and run tactics and better relationship and understanding of the Rangdan. Higher intrigue bonuses
Cons: Worse weaponry, poorer understanding of The Warp, sneaky reputation. Stewardship Malus

[ ] The Age of War

Humanity looked to the stars and heard the baying for our blood. Instead of us coming to them, they came to us. The Orks won their war and then bumbled upon us before we were ready. their assault savaged the outer worlds of the solar system and even threatened Mars for a time. However the Orks didn't bet on one thing: our desperation. We threw everything at them. Weapons of Mass Destruction, bioweapons and even our own people were thrown into the meatgrinder to buy even the slightest amount of time. By the time the war had ended One third of Sol's 100 billion citizens had perished, Deimos was destroyed and discretely replaced with Ceres and Humanity had been scarred and brutalised far beyond what they had been ready for.

Now they fly boldly forth, in ships bristling with the nastiest weaponry they can muster. Humanity shortly after became known as one of the most bloodthirsty younger races to have ever existed.

Pros: Massively improved weaponry, better personal war gear, heavily developed close quarters combat doctrine, better soldiers in general. Higher Martial Bonuses
Cons: MASSIVE hatred for the Orks, Xenophobia is more widely accepted, you have even less allies. Diplomacy Malus.

[ ] The Age of Progress

Humanity Looked up to the Heavens, decoding the cries of alien wars, and shrugged. They neither hid nor made war upon the aliens, they simply built and innovated. Soon a Dyson Swarm circled Sol while magnetic harvesters drank greedily from the Mantles of worlds and even the Sun itself. Huge shipyards encircled every planet and space stations the size of continents were set up to house excess population. When both alien sides eventually learned of and attacked humanity it was said they gaped in horror at the sight of such a built up system and the numerous advanced fleets sent to happily greet them. The imperial aliens ran the Orks didn't and were annihilated. Humanity soon expanded much to many a would be conquerors shock and horror.

Each of their ships is built for science first, with war coming at a distant fourth. Yet each of their ships is a treasure trove of advanced technology.

Pros: Increased technology level, Better industry, faster research, better sensors, knowledge of megastructures is fairly common. Higher Learning bonuses
Cons: Smaller population, need for advanced materials, lower war fatigue threshold, everyone wants your shit, no real developed tactics. Martial Malus.

[ ] The Age of Unity

After the Atomic Wars of Old Earth it was known that Humanity required unity. It was their factionalism that almost destroyed them and if they ventured into space unprepared then they could face annihilation from their worst opponent: themselves. Thus, they toiled for centuries to create the best system of Government they could One which was as fair, just and incorruptible as they could. They then colonised the Sol System and built it up. they delayed leaving the Sol system until Einstein's cage hard be partially circumnavigated, allowing for faster than light communication. After that the colony ships left, and yet they were always in touch with one another.

Their tactics and comradery would one day become known throughout the entire galaxy. Their logistics and bureaucracy moved like greased lightning and their logistics were a thing of wonder to behold. Finally when they found alien life they met it face on the way they always had: together.

Pros: Higher homogenisation, far less susceptible to corruption or rebellion, better communication technology, slightly faster warp speed, developed combined arms tactics. Higher Stewardship bonuses.
Cons: Higher homogenisation, slower research speeds, your people desperately want to get back into contact with the main Federation, Learning Malus.

[ ] The Age of Contact

For millennia Mankind had looked to the stars and wondered at the thought of alien life, now they hear the barbarous cries of warlords and find themselves...disappointed. Still they searched the night skies for any other signs, and found one. A world much like theirs. A species travelling within the confines of their star system and so Humanity reaches out...and begins to talk. The two species share research, culture, thoughts and dreams. The two decode, decipher and learn everything they can about the two races and begin to understand. Two becomes three centuries later and then four.

By the time the Imperials triumph over the Orks and find Humanity they also find the aliens that had joined their coalition.

Pros: Better translators and xenolinguistics, more allies , faster reverse engineering, higher threshold for the doom counter, Developed special forces. Higher Diplomacy bonuses.
Cons: Reputation of extreme naivety, sometimes you live up to said reputation, must attempt diplomacy first, cannot commit war crimes (no, not even on the Orks). Intrigue Malus.

The Systems of the Besarife Federation (subject to a lot of change)
The Besarife System

Yellow Dwarf Star:
A G-type main-sequence star with a radius of 428,000 miles. Much like most of the system this star bears a remarkable similarity to it's counterpart in Sol. Currently has a meagre three thousand solar collectors orbiting around it.

Besarife 1: A rocky, lifeless world blasted with stellar radiation from the nearby star. At 55 million kilometres away from the sun it is the closest planet to the sun and an ideal place to launch more solar collectors and mine to make the previously aforementioned collectors. The crust of the planet is rich in metals, though unfortunately lacks natural deposits of Promethium and Adamantium.

Besarife 2: Your Capital Planet. A habitable rocky planet only slightly smaller than Old Earth at a radius of 6,289km. This World was initially decided to be a natural park/bio-lab, as can be seen by the numerous genetically altered trees. The world has 50 cities, each of which are largely spread out from each other, with technology necessary to live in harmony with the nature of this planet. This planet has numerous highly educated citizens with a focus on Biology, though there are plenty of other scientists of different fields. The only available megastructure present is a single space elevator which leads up to a small shipyard. Neither of these is shielded and is thus vulnerable.

Besarife 3: A large uninhabitable rocky planet with a radius of 8,157km. Due to it's extremely high metal content and numerous natural adamantium deposits the gravity of the planet is far higher than it's size would suggest. In addition its distance from the sun at 241 million km away renders it outside of the habitable zone. Still this planet can, with the right technology, become a mining world or even a habitable colony.

Besarife Asteroid Belt: Between the rocky inner planets and the two outer planets lies a rather anaemic belt of asteroids. It is currently unknown what it contains, but given it's small size it's likely not much. It could, perhaps be used to place hidden gun emplacements or bombs to the systems defences.

Besarife 4: A large gas giant with a radius of 65,800km 754 million km away from the star, complete with a ring of metallic asteroids and ice particles. It is theorised that the gravity of this giant slowly dragged most of the asteroid field into it's orbit. However this ring is slowly being worn away by one of the 12 moons of the planet, which appears to have a clearly unnatural orbit originating from gravitic disturbances coming from inside said moon. Due to this a full mapping of the other moons was postponed until a dedicated fleet of science vessels could be built In addition Besarife 5 also seems to contain life, albeit a rather alien form of life, in the form of packs of flying bat-like creatures. They seem to derive energy in the same way a primitive wind mill might, flying facing the direction of the wind. Given their presence in a gas giant and their baffling biology it seems rather obvious that these creatures did not evolve naturally. This gas giant is full of Hydrogen, Helium, Methane and a very small amount of Ammonia. Possible uses: a dedicated scientific outpost to study both the native creatures and the mysterious moon. Multiple refining stations to harvest the natural gases for a variety of purposes. potentially an additional shipyard (depending on the state of the moons).

Besarife 5: A smaller gas giant of only 29,000km, 1.1 billion km away from the star. Mostly made up of Methane, Water and Ammonia. The gas giant has 5 moons, all of which have little metallic content. The moons are between 3,000km and 600km in terms of radius. Possible uses: early warning outpost, refining station to harvest the natural gases for a variety of purposes.

The Ixian System

???????

???????

???????

Ixian 3: A habitable Ocean World that contains numerous underwater arcologies, marking this planet as a Civilised World. This planet contains all basic STCs as well as the 'Triton' STC, allowing for civilian underwater exploration and habitation.

???????

???????

???????

???????

The Weserite System

????????

????????

Weserite 2: An Agri World of the Federation, only recently colonised due to fears of warp turbulence cutting worlds off from the 500 systems. This World is a verdant Earth-like world which was once a Death World. Numerous Men of Iron strike forces and virus bombings left the world bare enough for terraforming to begin. This World contains all basic STCs as well as the 'Persephone' STC, an altogether inferior version of your 'Demeter' STC.

????????

????????

????????

????????

????????

The Bengali System

???????

???????

???????

Bengali 3: A pleasure world famed for it's numerous tropical islands and crystal clear beaches. Only 7% of this land is covered in land, and is thus an excellent place to begin underwater construction. This colony possesses the 'Dionysus' STC, containing every luxurious item you can imagine. Mansions, drugs, games, alcohol are only some of the things this database stores. At least your population will be happy.

???????

The Judas System

???????

Judas 1: An inhospitable tidally locked rocky planet constantly being bombarded with stellar radiation, making normal light speed communication and sensors difficult to use. Deep within the crust of the twilight zone there is a research base carrying out covert studies of the galaxies political structures, their weaknesses and how to best exploit them. It was slightly awkward for them to explain this to you. While they have no STCs beyond the basics they do possess a wealth of political knowledge and acumen.

All Current Crises
Major

The Major Crises are problems that are occurring on a galactic level, some may not be affecting you now, but they will at some point. Even one of these would bring a powerful polity reeling. All of them? Refer to canon.

Warp Turbulence: Areas of space where the warp is wild and chaotic but hasn't yet broke through into the Materium. This Crisis renders communication and travel extremely difficult and makes operating on a galactic level impossible for civilisations dependant on the Warp for interstellar travel and communications. Which humanity does.

Warp Storms: Areas of space where the Immaterium has overrun Realspace. Communication and Interstellar travel using the warp is impossible in these areas. In addition the environment of these places is inimical to human life.

Psyker Eruptions: Strange humans have been appearing in the recent centuries which possess a strong connection to the Warp, much like the Eldar and other psychically gifted species. While this was neat at first, it could not come at a worse time. These psykers are highly unstable individuals prone to megalomania and other forms of insanity. Often the appearance of too many psykers on a planet means an incursion of psychic predators and the worsening of the Warp Turbulence crisis in the local area.

Rogue Artificial Intelligence: While the Cybernetic Revolution has largely been put down it is folly to assume every single corrupted Man of Iron and Man of Stone was destroyed. Indeed, there have been reports all over the galaxy of badly damaged and insane A.I. Striking at weakened worlds and butchering their populations whilst corrupting and enslaving their fellow machines.

Alien Attacks: With Tensions rising wars with aliens are becoming far more frequent with thousands of colonies and their precious resources being destroyed, further exacerbating the numerous other crises.

Aeldari Raids: The Aeldari have begun raiding numerous worlds, and not just human worlds at that, unaffected by the ever more chaotic state of the warp. Usually the Federation would be able to turn away casual raiding attempts by the Aeldari Empire. However with the ever worsening situation Humanity and every other race is left weakened and paralysed and so the Aeldari grow bolder and bolder. Before being cut off you had even heard they were stealing stars from the sky, leaving numerous species to die in the cold and the dark.

Quarantine breaks: Previously Humanity and the Rangdan worked hand in hand to contain some of the more horrific species and entities of the galaxy with a combination of the Rangdan's omnipresent fleets and Humanity's swift warp speeds. Unfortunately this is no longer the case and now the monsters are loose.

Minor

The Minor crises are problems that are being faced in your current area. This does not necessarily mean that there aren't other places suffering from the same issues, but they aren't as omnipresent or as dangerous.

Shortages of Resources: Due to the loss of shipping from the main federation numerous rare resources are not available. Without these, or a substitute for them, there are several critical pieces of technology that will eventually break down.

Numerous Unmapped Areas: Your colonisation of these systems was lazy and unhurried. You were confident that, whatever waited here, the might of the Federation would be with you. Now you are cut off, and you desperately need that information.

Hostile Conditions: There are many planets in the federation which depend on advanced technology to be able to function. Arctic vacation planets where you recreate the Viking of old on a lark, dinosaur petting planets, zoo planets containing every species from every death world. However when the technology to keep these places liveable disappears then they become a lot more dangerous. You hold one such world.

Unstable Government: You were suddenly cut off from the Main Federation and had to slap together something that worked in the interim and appointed a reluctant critic as the governor for 5 Solar systems. This is not sustainable and needs to be addressed immediately.

Technology Level of the DAoT
So, given that little is known of the DAoT besides a few ridiculous stuff I thought I should clarify what sort of technology level the Federation was at in Comparison to the Imperium of Man in this quest.

The answer is complicated but the average level of the Federation is about equivalent to some of the highest of the Imperium. Nearly everything that the Imperium recovered from STC's or kept working even without knowledge of how it worked was the most ubiquitous pieces of technology.

Power armour, conversion fields, power weapons and plasma weaponry? Standard issue for a federation soldier. The reason said pieces of tech survived for thousands of years in this quest was because they had to to be tough and (relatively) simple to make. Both of which are the attributes of something that is often mass produced.

Things like Auramite power armour and the weapons of the Custodes or Primarchs. Like Heliothermic guns or Grav guns were afforded to special forces. So less common but still present in a normal Federation system.

It is when you get to the big guns when things get crazy. Sun snuffers and Time-space eaters were rare in this version of the federation. Making them was costly and the mind required to operate it began at several Men of Iron working together. In fact things like that were designed by said Men of Iron so following the Cybernetic rebellion humanity lost the ability to make or even understand their top tier weapons.

So yeah, average levels would be: the best of the Imperium but in much better condition and then mass produced. At the start of this quest you will start with a lot of this technology, but depending on certain things you may lose the ability to retain it.

Edit: Note that I said "average federation level" if you pick Age Of War then you'd have far better weapons than even this, if you pick Age of Unity then you'd be far faster than the imperium and if you pick Age of Progress then everything I've listed goes up a level.

STC databases owned
STC Databases

STC databases contain the sum total of all human knowledge, however given the risk of their theft frontier worlds are only initially given what they need to survive and thrive. Thus the type of STC each world is given is different, but all are potent tools to be wielded.

The Besarife Federation collection

STC Olympus Initiative 'Hestia':
An STC database containing civilian infrastructure and various culinary recipes (around 50 billion). The internal V.I is capable of scanning local geology to find ideal places to construct homes and cities, it is capable of scanning local flora and fauna and cross reference them with it's obscene database to understand how to make various foodstuffs. This is a basic STC handed out to every colony.

STC Olympus Initiative 'Muses': An STC database containing Humanity's numerous cultural works: art, music, stories, Philosophy, etc. Of more relevance to you however is that the 'Thalia' section of the database possesses numerous schools of thought, methods of education and an understanding of physics and maths that could allow you, if you had the time, to recreate all of Humanity's greatest works in a few thousand years. This is a basic STC handed out to every colony.

STC Olympus Initiative 'Athena': An STC focused on the defence of colonies, while this database is somewhat lacking in comparison to the 'Ares' database, this allows you to produce low end war gear and ships. This is a basic STC handed out to every colony.

STC Olympus Initiative 'Hecantoncheires': An STC focused on civilian industry and planning. While inferior to the 'Hephaestus' database this still allows a planet to quickly build and spread. It is capable of finding natural deposits of resources with it's scanners and the design of individualised mining and construction facilities. This is a basic STC handed out to every colony.

STC Olympus Initiative 'Zephyros': An STC focused on civilian communication and travel. This device contains numerous designs for Warp Buoys and drives as well as various scientific studies looking into alternatives. Though this database is lacking in comparison with the 'Hermes' pattern it is still capable of allowing for communication and travel for up to 50 or so light years.

STC Olympus Initiative 'Demeter': An advanced STC only given to Research Worlds focused on the study of biology in some form. This STC was granted to the colony of Besarife in order to study the introduction of numerous genetically altered species into an environment. This STC contains the human sum total knowledge of: Genetics, Agriculture, Medicine, Medical Equipment and General Biology. If there is something related to Biology then there are good odds you can accomplish it with time.

What could have been.
I suppose I'll start with the runner up.

The Age of Unity would be an interesting polity to play as. Their communication technology was leagues ahead of all other choices you could have taken. In fact your reach was such that you would have had six systems instead of five to start with.

In fact rather than any megastructures the Federation's pride and joy of this age was their Galactic Noosphere, their buoys were capable of receiving and sending millions of signals in an instant due to a massive breakthrough in the previous century. Of course while civilians had access to this it was slow and buffered often (which is still impressive given the scale) and the military remained the main user of this communication network.

Their increased speed was possible thanks to a breakthrough in Gellar field structure, allowing less drag to slow them down. Mechanically anything trying to infiltrate, corrupt or otherwise slow down your government would face higher dice thresholds and any roll you had that included stewardship would have a bonus attached to it.

Your learning dice would be reduced, however. Your high homogenisation stifling differing ideas. In addition your people would never allow for you to sit idly by as the galaxy burned. So any plan to run or fort up in the systems you currently own would be locked, and you would be forced to take actions that would gain you little for massive cost.

Next up was The Age of Contact.

As many of you may have surmised, this would essentially be playing as Starfleet. You would first have a chance to roll on a table to pick up a number of unique technologies gifted to you by your allies. This could go from more efficient guns to missiles that exist in multiple dimensions.

Your Linguistics and translators would allow you to massively lower checks to integrate aliens peacefully into your federation, or even trade. Due to having numerous examples of alien technology and mindsets available reverse engineering would have been given a large bonus. So your best bet with this build would have been to be as aggressively friendly as possible and trade to gain massive amounts of tech and populations.

In addition due to the narrative of humans being super nice and friendly there would be less alien empires attacking, thus allowing for a (very small) chance for the main Federation to bounce back on it's own, and if not then massively extending it's lifespan. Naturally all diplomacy rolls would have bonuses.

However your intrigue rolls would be Massively nerfed and this could allow for sabotage and betrayals, ironically your biggest strength would also be your biggest weakness, as the tech and population that you gain could very easily become a poisoned knife against your heart.

In addition Your generals will generally try to end wars as fast as possible (which sounds good
but nope) and thus ignore better strategies for more expedient ones. Even choosing peace deals which don't favour you.

Also you can't nuke Orks.

The Age of War was next.

Do you like big guns? Ever wanted to launch black holes at your enemy or use nova rounds with the ship equivalent of a semi automatic weaponry? The war gear of Humanity would be ridiculously strong, as well as their personal prowess. Every soldier in humanity would be the equivalent of a Space Marine. No. I'm not joking.

Even in this age of horrors there wouldn't be any single fight you would lose. Except for the Aeldari and such.

However everyone knows this and also doesn't like you. There would be Far more hostile enemies, and they wouldn't try to fight you head on. They'd target your logistics and infrastructure, they'd exterminatus your planets if you left them too undefended and any attempt at diplomacy with these attackers would be extremely difficult. After all, this was a lesson you taught them.

And finally The Age of Silence.

I was admittedly kind of bummed nobody wanted to play as these guys, considering they were my second favourite. This faction would be geared towards stealth and survival in deep space. Your stealth would be the equal of the Craftworld Eldar and your troops independence would mean you would gain more actions than all other choices.

It's definitely the choice that would be taken for those who want the largest chance of survival. In addition you would start off with an ally faction that would be your equal and gain bonuses to intrigue actions.

However this version of humanity is undoubtedly the most fractured, operating in splinter cells. If you played as this I would have often hidden certain actions from you due to the presence of people from your own faction. In addition your weapons, warp knowledge and stewardship would have been worse than the standard.

Civilisation Generator 2
The Age of Progress

Civilisation Generator 2

Article:
In the distant years of M3 310 efforts were attempted by numerous Companies and Governments to begin the construction of a Dyson Swarm. It was purely a vanity project from start to finish. Their solar collectors were inefficient when compared to our Conversion Batteries and the machines sent to mine Mercury were lead by corrupt and incompetent fops, who had treated the effort as a chance for fame and glory but wished to put in none of the work.

Eventually the Atomic Wars of Old Earth began and the machines left upon our celestial neighbour were left to rot, our attention turning inward for a millennia.

In M5 serious considerations to once more attempt the construction were held. The transmissions of the two alien empires was causing a renaissance in industrial and scientific efforts. This time when we once more stepped foot on Mercury it was not in fragile and cramped habitats, it was in mighty bulwarks of ceramite. The machines we sent forth were the Men of Glass, the ancient precursors of the Men of Stone, and those sent to observe and direct the swarm of machines were chosen based on their organisational and scientific skills.

The Dyson Swarm itself could have been built in only fifty years, such was the power of our self replicating servants. However we took our time to constantly check and re-check the construction. Were the orbits perfectly aligned? Were the Conversion Batteries functioning properly? What contingencies were in place in the case of a solar flare? A thousand questions were asked, simulations were run and optimised.

The Dyson Swarm itself would only complete nearly a decade after the Klyria Imperium attempted to invade the Sol System, but it wasn't as if we needed it to be complete. Even a partially finished Dyson Swarm gave us a surplus of useable energy with which to complete our projects. Great rings were raised around Mars fitted with millions of Ion Shields, Lance Cannons and Caldera Pattern Shipyards. Great Stellar Bellows drank greedily from the Sun, their magnetic maws eagerly filling with elements for us to reshape to our whims. By the time the Klyria arrived we had an estimated total of 93,000 ships of various classes, enough for us to drown their entire empire in steel and blood.

Article:
By the time of M24 Humanity has, in it's possession, around 500 artisanal crafted Megastructures that encompassed a star. Not all of these were Dyson Swarms. Ring Worlds, Alderson Disks, Dyson bubbles and even one attempt to create High Energy lifeforms which necessitated a truly massive research station which encircled a red dwarf. All Matrioshka Brains were pre-emptively destroyed in fear of them falling into the hands of the Men of Iron, causing a massive loss of computing infrastructure and information that will likely be felt for thousands of years.

These 500 systems constitute the main industrial, scientific and cultural centres of Humanity and each system contains trillions of lives. So vital are these systems that if they were cut off from the Federation Network thousands of systems would quickly fall into anarchy and ruin.

Wait. Are we the Forerunners now?
-A post the forum Sufficient Velocity

Always have been. 🔫
-The next post

Yes, the Federation had stood for nearly 20,000 years and it was one of the mightiest civilisations known to the Milky Way Galaxy. They were known to the Kyria Imperium as "The Great Jailers" after Humanity's fleets had tracked them back to their systems and bound them to their planets with fixed defence platforms, never to rise to the stars again. When the Kyria civilisation inevitably collapsed under their own weight, the descendants of these vicious people would only remember humanity as sneering demons that watched them from above and were lauded as their final test to reach paradise. They would later be among the first species lost in the Green War.

To the Great Conglomeration of OOO Humanity had acted as their shields during the Great Collapse, sheparding their tree clutches to safer and more tranquil worlds, to start anew. Thousands of years later they would rise from these worlds to greet Humanity like a brother, the genetic memory passed down allowed them to retain much of their history.

The Aeldari, or at least the few who even bothered to give their thoughts, described them in a word that might mean 'Annoyances' or perhaps 'Speedbumps' or 'Pinpricks'. Few would even recognize the slight compliment for what it was.

The Empire of One Million Stars, some would call it.

Such a shame it was burning.

The Terran Federation was primarily known for it's science and not for it's government. Thus, we shall be fleshing out that part of the Federation next. Unlike the last vote this shall have no mechanical benefits or downsides. It is simply narrative that changes Humanity's view on certain things and how they behave. No matter what these Governments can be thought of a reasonably competent or, at the very least, stable.

Pick one:

[ ] A Feudal Confederacy

The Terran federation held an enduring and successful Feudal Institution. It both bound its worlds through the good leaderships of elected officials and nobles alike while leaving enough freedom for individual worlds to develop meaningful cultures. This was a product created by convenience due to the sheer size of the Federation and the distance between colonies.

[ ] Corporate Polity
In the aftermath of the Atomic Wars the only standing systems of control left were the various corporations that survived. Acting quickly, the various megacorps took control of the planet. The next millennia was a trying time as the Corporations and those under them faced various transitional issues. Through sheer pragmatism and thousands of repeated lessons of nukes to their corporate buildings the various companies eventually took a softer and less profit oriented approach. These days both corporation and worker walk hand in hand with a dagger behind their backs, constantly keeping the other in check.

[ ] Representative Democracy
The various governments of Old Earth survived, if in a weakened state, and their citizens used this weakness to force greater responsibility, legal consequences and scrutiny for these elected representatives. Given the sheer size and reach of the federation this means that decisions are often taxing and slow, but the Federation has gained much experience in this and is constantly working on ways too shorten the gap between colonies.

[ ] Communist State
Given the existence of Dyson Swarms and Stellar Bellows the energy and material production of the federation will always outstrip any need for these things. With this in mind there is a one party state fully devoted to their state ideology. Each citizen has full access to Nanofabricators and enough energy and mass per month to build a mansion. There have been bouts of corruption in this one state party from time to time, however numerous impartial Men of Stone ensure it does not last long.

[ ] Feudal Technocracy
The rank and prestige of a person in the federation depends on ability and skill, while those below perform more menial tasks. Given the invention of autonomous machines this work has less become working in factories, collecting rubbish or other things of that nature. Instead those of less ability are given tasks to survey, research, and investigate areas of less scientific importance and many have used this to climb higher in the ranks.
This vote is weighted as 1.1 due to The Age of Progress' obssession with scientific research and development

[ ] Something Else
What's that? you don't like these options and want to make your own? or maybe you didn't like the way I explained one of these types of government? Here's a blank check, go make your own and save me the trouble! ...Oh god, I just gave SV a blank check to make a Government.

The rise of Humanity from the radioactive muck of Old Earth was a truly terrible affair. Centuries were spent in barbarism that one would have expected only in the earliest days of antiquity. The various Nation States of the time fell apart rather rapidly, disintegrating under the weight of 9 billion lost souls. Watching wearily from a state of the art bunker a coven of ancient scientists began their work.

The period of time lasting between late M2 and mid M3 has often been referred to by historians as 'The Age of Ignorance', a term coined by the surviving scientists of the time and then passed on to their successors. It is a disparagement largely fuelled by the disillusionment of said scientists. For years they had spoken out against the 'New Normal' that was the constant minute from midnight alerts, Scientists even centuries earlier had forewarned many governments of the danger of climate change, only to be ignored for the money various corporations provided. The Flooding of London and the Manhattan Disaster are only *some* of the disasters which befell humanity in early M3, to which various governments made token gestures and only sought to maintain their own power.

The scientists of the time were angry and bitter. Angry at the politicians, those who sought to lead Nations with blatant lies and rank idiocy. Angry at the Corporations, whose senseless greed and selfishness had ruined the planet they called home. Angry at the populace, for accepting this and not trying to fix what had been wrought. Angry at themselves, for they had failed miserably.

They had seen the tension present between the Super Blocks of the world, they had predicted how this would end. While there were some who wished to try one last time, to give humanity a chance to back off and focus their attentions on more than just petty warmongering and scrambling for power, many simply prepared for the end.

As well as what came after.

When our esteemed and enlightened ancestor Sways-In-The-Stellar-Light met with our honourable Cousins of an alien world, it was with weary confusion. They roamed the stars with dead metal, and touched by the realm of madness. All the while the 'humans', as they call themselves, were full of life and with their very souls bound to the Light of Reason.

Their moods were strange, and how they organized themselves even stranger. Instead of organizing themselves by the shape and texture of their forms, as was intended by the Urn Tree, they ranked themselves based on their scientific acumen. Our species has an entirely separate caste for those inclined to science and engineering, but every single one of these humans could be considered a scientist.

The lowest of their ranks act as apprentices and assistants while their highest are akin to the greatest of our histories polymaths.

Haha, Science goes BRRRRR!!!

Haha, Dyson Swarm goes BRRRRR!!!
-A less than ancient meme post

Cincinnatus studied the papers, for a time. His advanced gene engineered and cybernetically enhanced brain storing and comprehending their contents in less than a second. He had asked various bureaus and think tanks to present him with various plans to prevent the collapse of the hastily formed Besarife Federation.

Because he knew the reprieve they had now was only temporary, the turbulence of the Warp was not as strong out here at the edges of the Galaxy. However the Emergency Governor had faith of the very worst sort, a faith that they were only feeling the gentle kiss of moisture before the typhoon.

"Is this truly all of them" he asked to the lithe mechanical figure. MS-55 was a true masterwork, forged in the industrial world of Ryza he was one of the first to obtain the plasmatic computing that made the AI of the Federation so very feared.

The figure turned with the smoothness and perfection of function that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, some remnant ancestral genes screaming at him to run and hide from a predator currently sizing him up. It stared for a moment, and Governor Vol didn't even pretend he had the smallest clue as to what the thinking machine was pondering.

"The situation is...complex" the rich voice of the automata rung out, before pausing. He was fully aware that this was just an affectation designed to put humans at ease, in reality the machine had likely already plotted out the entirety of his reply and even the rest of the meeting. "The numerous factors, as well as the poor communication, means that there is little to go off what is currently happening" the creature started, before moving to gaze out of his window "While Humanity might be intelligent, and us Creations just as bright, we cannot form a proper conclusion with so little to go off.

Cincinnatus rifled through the papers before responding "besides attempting to increase our knowledge of *The Warp* you mean?" He didn't hide his disgust for the concept, and notably the machine didn't disagree with the sentiment.

"This crisis has been primarily caused by The Warp. The turbulence, the storms and the Psykers can all be traced back to it. It is only...logical to attempt to understand the nature of our greatest threat." Left unsaid was that The Warp wasn't the slightest bit logical, in the millennia following the creation of Warp Drives and Gellar Fields the Federations knowledge of that strange eldritch plane had only increased incrementally, and only by scientists Cincinnatus would consider to be completely insane.

"If only the creations of those damn Orks were in any way sensible, we might have been able to figure out how to teleport across solar systems without the use of the cursed place." It was true, the Orks had had numerous pieces of technology that defied the models of the universe that humanity had so painstakingly crafted, one of these was the aforementioned transportation device that appeared to use an entirely different dimension. The Green War had been a harsh wakeup call to humanity, perhaps it was only fitting that their complete opposites would be the ones to completely dumbfound the entirety of Humanity.

"That would be nice" MS-55 agreed, slumping slightly. Governor Vol wasn't sure if this was an affectation, when it came to that dimension of unreality the Artificial Intelligence that humanity had created hated it to an even larger extent than their creators.

He looked back down to the proposals, suddenly feeling his 500 years of life all too clearly. The cybernetic crafted to his flesh and bones seeming heavier than they ever had before. He knew he had to make a choice. But to do so may very well bring damnation to the people he had sworn to safeguard.

Okay guys, here are some preliminary plans that have been submitted to you by your advisors and scientists. They give you broad direction to follow, and making progress on these plans gives you political support which can further aid by allowing you to perform actions and research that would be considered unpopular at best.

[ ] Plan Fortify
-15 political support
A rather unpopular plan, but likely the easiest one to fulfil. This plan calls for the evacuation of all nearby systems into one system, this will prevent Warp Turbulence from cutting your populations off from each other and will allow you to wait out the apocalypse. However this plan does not meaningfully prevent the emergence of a Warp storm or the issue of Psykers besides having a smaller target and having your population in one easy to manage (and search) place. Of course following this plan will mean you forsake the rest of the Federation, barring some miracle.
Steps:
Search all available systems for the most ideal.
Transport all population to the suitable system.
Set up some form of system to find psykers early.
Find a way to safely neutralise said psykers.
Fully exploit the system of it's resources.
Build several defence fleets.
Potentially research a way to prevent Warp Storms from ruining your work.

[ ] Plan Eye of the Storm -20 political support
The system of Rix is a popular story of the Federation, as they were a system that was stuck in a localised Warp Storm for three centuries. When the storm cleared it was apparent that their people had survived due to the positioning of the storm. They sat in the eye of that Warp Storm and thus they were safe. In addition they had only experienced a decade of being trapped in the storm. This plan seeks to purposefully recreate that scenario. If successful the Besarife Federation will survive and be preserved by the temporal effect until the storm dissipates. This plan is much like the first in terms of downsides, but doesn't require you to *immediately* retreat to one system.
Steps:
Research The Warp/Find the Pontus STC.
Search all available systems for the most ideal.
Transport all population to the suitable system.
Set up some form of system to find psykers early.
Find a way to safely neutralise said psykers.
Research a way to purposefully create a Warp Storm.
Fully exploit the system of it's resources.
Build several defence fleets.

[ ] Plan Reconnecting +5 political support
The Federation is a bastion of reason, and the most reasonable thing to do here is realise that you are unequipped to deal with this. Reconnecting to the Federation should be your primary concern, after all if there is any polity that can figure out a solution to this galactic disaster it's the Federation. Notably this is a very risky plan, if you are unable to reconnect with the Federation, or if The Federation doesn't have a solution then you have completely wasted highly valuable time during the end of the Galaxy.
Steps:
Research The Warp/Find the Pontus STC.
Advance Warp Buoys Technology
Obtain/create a scientist specialised in Warp Communication
Potentially Find a new means of communication and travel.
Reconnect with neighbouring systems.
Reconnect with the greater Federation and share with them your studies.

[ ] Plan Engineer Solutions +10 political support
Perhaps the most typical response given by a member of the Terran Federation when facing a problem is: "how can I find a way around this?" It should come as no surprise then, that the most popular plan is to simply engineer solutions to all current crises and save The Terran Federation. This is undoubtedly the hardest road of them all, instead of hiding from the collapse of Galactic Civilisation you will be attempting to make your way through it.
Steps:
Engineer a solution to Warp Turbulence.
Engineer a solution to Warp Storms.
Engineer a solution to Psykers.
Engineer a solution to all outside hostile forces.
Pass these solutions on to The Federation

[ ] Plan Flexible +0 political support
The fact of the matter is you're in an evolving situation. There's no point in making plans now when you lack so much information. You will make decisions as they come.
No steps

[ ] Your Plan
Variable political support
If you want to make your own plan then go ahead. Check the Current Crises Informational to know what you're up against.
Unknown amount of steps

And this marks the end of the Civ Gen! I'm going to give a moratorium of Four Hours for you discuss amongst yourselves what your plans will be to stop or survive the beginning of the Age of Strife. Feel free to ask me questions, as I'll be around making corrections to this post and updating stuff.

The next update after this will likely take longer due to needing to set up the actions you can choose. Enjoy!
