A Dark Day For The Mojave: A Post Hoover Dam Game

Not much left of them after the Dam. If they didn't die in the attack on Golf (which I would say a fair few did), the rest died when the Dam fell or during the retreat. Maybe 100 or so (200 at best) in California, but the Rangers are broken. Still, if you want to play them, all the more to you.
Oh, for the love of-

*ahem* None of that is in the OP. And I've already written over 250 words on my character biography. Are you sure we can't inflate those numbers a bit? Factions that matter are running thin on the ground. And, using the Brotherhood of Steel as a benchmark...I would think that even Vetaran Rangers (the badasses in black armour) are qualitatively inferior to Brotherhood soldiers with full kit. Do they really have to be numerically inferior as well, even having taken losses at the Dam?

Ah yeah, I remember that. If Chief Hanlon dies, General Oliver's plan gets put into place without anyone to oppose it, which means the Rangers are put on the Dam instead of the far side cliffs. However, if Chief Hanlon doesn't die his Rangers survive, but in this scenario Hanlon would probably pull a Czechoslovak Legion and march his Rangers back West, fighting anyone who got in his way.

Well we're not limited to just the Mojave. Though only meaningful independent factions left in the Mojave are the Supermutants, the Fiends and the Powder Gangers.

A fair point, although in the ending in which he is still alive and the Legion wins the battle, it is stated that he and his men fought to the last. Of course, that can be overlooked. Very well.

Chief (insert name), the rangers have seen batter days. Far from the powerful organization we once were, the defeat at the Dam, the attak on Golf and the subsequent retreat have heavily thinned out our numbers. You only have 500 rangers and 100 veterans at your command and distrust against us due to Hanlon grows by the day. Unless something changes, these will be the darkest days for the Rangers since the Enclave War or the early days of our war with the BOS.

Mechasaurian - Chief Helen Russell
You could always take Colonel Hsu. He has as many men under his direct control as I and them clashing over objectives would make for a more compelling game.
...huh. That's a good idea. Potentially more interesting than the character I wrote about below, who is basically a fellow hawk.

West Coast BOS Remnants.
That's...also a good idea. Darn.

Well, I'm putting this up because I worked pretty hard on it, but I'm no longer so sure about filing an official claim given the other options. I'd appreciate people telling me what they think.
@Mechasaurian
What is being claimed: Chief Helen Russell, leader of the NCR Rangers
Canonical/Original Content explanation:
Few expected Helen Russel to end up succeeding Hanlon as Chief of the NCR Rangers.

Helen was originally a member of the Desert Rangers, a militia who took it upon themselves to protect the Mojave by defending innocents, hunting raiders and putting down other such threats. Helen made a name for herself early in life by playing a key part in a mission to destroy a mysterious machine intelligence in the heart of Vegas which had been kidnapping and vivisecting nearby wastelanders.

Yet everything changed when Caesar's Legion entered the Mojave from the east, taking slaves and. To begin with, the Desert Rangers dealt with the Legion as they dealt with any other warlord, assassinating leaders, inflicting disproportionate casualties through hit and fade attacks, and freeing numerous slaves. Yet, it became apparent that the Legion was of a vast scale that was simply beyond anything the Desert Rangers had seen since before the Great War. No matter how many were killed, they simply kept coming. And now they were out for the Rangers' blood.

And then came the New California Republic from the west. A vast army, claiming to be attached to a nation-state straight out of the Old World, who were now making overtures to the Rangers of absorption. This split the Desert Rangers into two camps - the "Joiners," who wanted to accept the NCR's offer of integration so as to better fight the Legion, and the "Indeps" (short for "Independents"), who wanted to stay clear of association with what they viewed as an imperialist power. The leader of the latter faction was none other than Helen Russel, fiercely declaring that the Desert Rangers ought to continue fighting a guerilla was against the Legion on their own terms. Yet, wary of the Legions overwhelming strength, most of the Rangers chose integration. As the war in the Mojave heated up, even Helen's faction steadily defected one by one, choosing to wear the flag of the Bear in exchange for the resources provided by the NCR's military machine.

Furious with her former compatriots for "selling out to imperialists," Russell chose to assemble a small squad of like-minded Rangers and strike into Legion territory, aiming to find some way to cripple them, perhaps by organizing a slave uprising or even putting a bullet in the head of Caesar himself.

Nearly a year later, two of the original six squad members came back with haunted looks in their eyes. Neither of them spoke a word about what happened. One ventured north into the untamed wilds, never to return. And the last one - Helen Russell declared that she was ready to join the NCR.

As the NCR-Legion war escalated, Russell proved an able leader, and her grim focus on killing Legionaries endeared her to some. Yet, things changed yet again when a massive scandal at the leadership of the NCR Rangers emerged: Chief Hanlon, it was revealed (presumably by a Legion spy), had been purposefully sabotaging the NCR military by falsifying intelligence reports and deliberately miscommunicating information sent in from various NCR outposts, ultimately seeking to stir unrest in the NCR forces stationed in the Mojave and hoping to start a resistance against the higher echelons of the NCR military. In response, Hanlon committed suicide and a purging of the Ranger's upper ranks was done. In the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, General Oliver's plan for the Rangers replaced Hanlon's, putting the Rangers in the thick of the fighting on the Dam. As a result, they suffered heavy casualties and fatalities, severely thinning out their numbers.

In the aftermath of the political purges and the deaths of several high ranking Rangers, Russell emerged by consensus as the most acceptable choice to replace Hanlon, by a combination of competent (though not necessarily outstanding) leadership ability and a seething desire to do as much damage to the Legion as possible, alleviating concerns about a repeat of the Hanlon fiasco.

Though the Rangers have seen better days and distrust in them grows by the day, Russell is at least grimly determined to leverage their remaining strength into dealing the Legion a bloody nose by whatever means possible.

Why they are relevant: The NCR Rangers are famed as being the best of the NCR's best, being able to survive extended periods in the wild without support if necessary, infiltrate enemy locations, and being crack shots with dependable gunpowder-based firearms. The Veteran Rangers are the only humans of the Wastelands who can hope to fight a Brotherhood Paladin one-on-one, assuming their best kit of Elite Riot Gear and an Anti-Material Rifle.

And...wait a second.

I just realized: I can claim Father effing Elijah.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa indecision people help me what do i pick

Wait I see a flaw, Elijah can't get into the vault of the Sierra Madre without someone on the Courier's skill level... which means he's stuck the resort until someone helps him.

I'm also considering joining. With the Courier gone, wouldn't the Divide not be a wrecked horror show?

The Divide went to hell because the Courier unknowingly carried the ICBM Detonator from Navarro by order of the NCR. Without them the NCR simply hires another courier to do the job, after all they're just messengers.

I'm thinking of joining, any local Mojave factions left?

Vegas Families like the Gomorras, White Glove Society, or Chairmen.

The Kings, who run Freeside.

I'm unsure if anyone has claimed the Powder Gangers yet. That would also be a good choice for the Zapatista poster who inquired, since they are escaped convicts who hate the government.

He can even choose between those in Vault 19 and those in the Correctional Facility, so there's that.

True, but another Courier could've messed up, the plot could've been uncovered, the Legion could've intervened, etc. I mean, we've already opened the door and let the timeline butterflies out...

Eh, what the hell, I'll go for the Gun Runners. App soon.

It wasn't really a plot, more a case of nobody knew what it was except that it was old world tech that had the same symbols as some of the stuff around them. Human curiosity managed to get it working... and boom.

Bones - Gun Runners
Player name: Bones
What is being claimed: Gun Runners
Canonical/Original Content explanation: After the clustercuss at Hoover Dam, what passes for leadership amongst the Gun Runners held a meeting to discuss exactly what happened and how best to deal with it. Given the incompetence of the NCR, the growing existential threat that a victorious Legion appears to be, as well as suspected foul play by the Crimson Caravan Company and Van Graffs, more and more members are coming to the conclusion that a more "proactive" stance is required. Normally content to sit out conflict and reap a profit selling their arms, and they've currently got a good thing going for them with the NCR. And they like that. And if they're going to have to fight to keep their position secure, then so be it.
Why they are relevant: Guns and guns and guns and guns.
