"Ah. Okay, yeah." She nodded. Good thing the manual covered this situation. "We can fix this." Jo tapped on the ID. "Did you fill out form DD-72687 yet?"
Depends on what kind of kancolle setting(there basically nothing in the game about the setting), but yeah, seems pretty normal. She is a carrier after all.
Kancolle is a really... loose setting in general, where fanfiction is mostly filling in some very broad strokes of lore. That said, yeah in general shipgirls have a ton of food intake, likely meant as some sort of "they're eating to fill and power something of their actual ship size" or "eating to feed the equivalent of an entire crew". So, if you have a shipgirl that would have 50 people manning said ship, then she's going to go ahead and eat 50 person's worth of food in a single sitting.
For kancolle, kinda. Bigger ships need more intake. The calories are converted into fuel, ammo, even metal for repairs. Some fics have shipgirl food being either calorie dense to the 11, adding additives that are easier to convert, or both.
Yup. Fun fact: I originally conceived this story back in, like, March or something, as "What if my anime girl avatar, but trans?" Then forgot about until I realized I was trans. As you can tell, I was a dumb egg.

That does not scale well at all. Consider big capital ships like Midways with ~5,000 crew, and the poor shipgirl either has to spend literally all her life eating, or have some sort of "absorb food in the area" field going on for her to get enough supplies on board. And while Grace has fewer crew, some of them need enough energy to get 30+tons moving through the air at hundreds of miles an hour for hours on end.
Grace is eating so much (I did the math and I think it was something like ~30,000 calories there) because her reserves are empty. (As she notes in the chapter, and then later notes how much that food could do for her.) Considering a Midway can go about a week without resupply under ideal logistic situations, and that means when a shipgirl comes back from sortie the chow hall better be ready because she's not just eating her normal elevated intake, she's eating her entire supply deficit.
These big meals probably would contribute to shipgirls having a reputation for eating a lot, which turns out well for Grace right now since she is getting the fuel she needs.

So as I'm understanding, this is a story about many many more such sudden shipgirls popping up later? Rather than a one-off case existing solo and fully focused on?

Ah the joy of trying out speculative and fictional depictions of yourself, and realising how much they fit, in hindsight or straight up.
Though, a question somewhat on the topic of that. Do "natural born", normal and bmint, only come from people assigned female at birth, or anyone identifying female... or does the process not care at all?
Since Grace is trans and a girl that is explicit evidence that a B-Mint need not be AFAB. Also, since the manual covers this situation, that all but states there are trans girls among the natural borns. And given that 'shipgirl' seems to be the accepted general term in-setting, I should think it only happens to girls?
Yeah, whilst Shipgirls are all portrayed to have an increased appetite with destroyers being I think 'adult' (which considering they are usually kid sized...), cruisers double portions or something and then the capital ships? Battleships fill their tray then go back for seconds and maybe thirds. And I'm not talking about 'full of plates' when I say fill their trays either.
Aircraft carriers are so much worse than even the battleships unless you are talking a Yamato sister before they get a modernisation update to their engine systems. That all said this is 'before sortie' and 'after sortie' portions with the meal sizes for normal 'around the base day to day/not combat action' portions being lesser. Still 'massive pig out' size for battleships and larger for aircraft carriers but we aren't talking 'that girl just ate fifty full meals' anymore.
As for how all this works, it's Magical Shipgirl Bullshit playing games with how the Girl is a Ship and the Ship is a Girl. So Human Food is Ship Munitions, Fuel, Maintenance Parts and all that. Even if it's usually suggested if not outright stated that Shipgirls can still get some benefit from consuming the proper raw materials for the Ship components without suffering the issues a human would. There's just much less of a magical effect magnifying how much goes in to how many resources the Ship Body gets due to missing a step in the Magic. However food tends to be in much more plentiful supply than raw materials compared to how critical the need for said materials are in warfighting, so it's definitely avoided if possible.
Having said all that, this is very much up to the author how it works due to the minimal canon there is in Kancolle. So some just have the girls have an increased appetite relative to how large their crews are (if far from perfectly to-scale so the girls are spending all their time eating for the capital ships) whilst still needing to load up their riggings with raw materials, ammunition and fuel. Others have it so you actually need to load the rigging of the Shipgirl up with the full supply needs of the full sized ship hull (except usually food) without benefitting from any magical size differential shenanigans, though this is a rather rare stance. But I've seen it.
Long and short of it is that larger ships that become Shipgirls have larger appetites that are beyond what you would expect a girl their size to fit in. And the moment low supply happens whether than be needing to fill to the maximum as they are about to go out on a combat action, came back from a combat action, just came back without being filled with supplies (usually but not always limited to self-summons in areas where there isn't enough Magical Nonsense of the proper type to fuel a complete Shipgirl Summoning) or haven't been eating their fill for a while (psychological wartime trauma, lack of ability to supply their full needs, or something darker), a Shipgirl will start eating comically large portions of food.
As noted in the Werewolf: the Apocalypse 2nd edition core rulebook: we are all God's creatures. Some of us are a little more creature than others, that's all.

Yeah, and food has more benefits:
> It encourages socialization between humans and kanmusu
> It tastes better to eat
> It's logistically simpler. All the quartermaster at the base needs to do is have 120,000 calories of food sent directly at Midway, and she's resupplied. As opposed to 3,548ml of avgas, 5,427ml of fuel oil, six grams of brass, 12,342 grams of aluminum, 451 grams of copper, 541 grams of flour, oh wait her air wing took significant losses so it's 93,851 grams of aluminum instead, and you get the idea. Bringing over this:

and then following that up with bowls of fruit salad the size of sinks, until she says "when," is much easier to account for and get what everyone needs.

I'm not sure when the second case of "BMINTing" is going to happen, but it's going to be a while. Grace is the protagonist, if having first-person privileges wasn't a tip-off.

Also, since the manual covers this situation, that all but states there are trans girls among the natural borns. Yup. Being qualified to become a shipgirl, BMINT, or ***** requires certain characteristics. The process doesn't care where you start, only if you'll be comfortable with the end product. So if you're not comfortable with new anatomy hanging off you, you don't qualify. If bumping your hand against your turrets would cause you to think "I need to buy an angle grinder," then the Shipgirl Fairy will not pay you a visit. (No, there is no Shipgirl Fairy in this setting that turns girls into shipgirls)
USS Arturia Knight, licensed therapist in the state of Maryland: "Shipgirl Fairy isn't real. She can't hurt you."
Shipgirl fairy:
"Looks like you're getting nothing but 404 pages today."
As noted in the Werewolf: the Apocalypse 2nd edition core rulebook: we are all God's creatures. Some of us are a little more creature than others, that's all.
"Oh? You're reading further into things? Instead of bouncing off the surface, you're analyzing my text?"
"I can't make this story queer without reading into things."
"Oh ho! Then read as far as you like!"
Yup. Fun fact: I originally conceived this story back in, like, March or something, as "What if my anime girl avatar, but trans?" Then forgot about until I realized I was trans. As you can tell, I was a dumb egg.
It doesn't really matter at all, but purely for verisimilitude purposes, I would then remark that it's probably not a DD form that she needs to fill out, as she's technically not enlisted (or commissioned) yet. (Unless awakening as a shipgirl confers an automatic drafting, but that's a bit more dystopian than most treatments like to take.) She would need a civil change of identity to be processed first, then she joins under her identity.
And yes, of course that would introduce complications with her parents...

The form is for the Navy to lean on the civil process to expedite it, possibly keep it quiet, and remove the need for parental approval. Grace is still a civilian, and she can't even sign up for Shipgirl Junior Officer Training Corp without the approval of a guardian. No politician wants to create a new draft, or reactivate the old one.

Sure, but if this is the situation I would put forward that she still can't be filling out the form. Someone has to fill it out on her behalf as an interviewer or whatever to get the Navy moving.
(Again, it's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.)

Huh. Apologies if I'm misreading, but I've been under the impression that you were trans since I started reading Limit Theory back in 2016. Genuinely surprised to hear that that's something you've only recently realized.

I feel like I need to like, hugs, and funny this comment, but I can only do one.
Whelp. Amazing. "For nearly the past decade, I've thought you were trans. Even though I only knew you through your writing. And then it turns out you were." Bravo.

I thought i was seeing too much into things and projecting myself a bit too much, but nice to see I was right
Also,
If I had a nickel for every time a "male" writer who's made themselves a feminine avatar for their planetary annihilation fic and only realized they were not a male years after, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't much but it's fun that it's happened twice
As the old saw goes, fantasizing about being a girl is a rather common symptom of being one.
But yeah, that last chapter definitely raised the "Grace probably started out (sex)-male pre-Shipgirling" flag pretty high, my thought on finishing it was straight up "...she started as a boy didn't she"
Firehawk with her Rise of the Steel Phoenix
She tries to justify to herself why she wants to have a female avatar alongside her male one, telling herself that she'll totally use them for different purposes equally...
And it's been a while. But I don't remember the male one being used more than a few times
A few years later i see her profile pronouns are she/her
Anyways, probably shouldn't derail this any further
Forgot to comment I like this fic ofc and I'm eager for more. I always enjoy ltmauve's worldbuilding
It took a bit for Grace to calm down. Jo continued patting Grace's head for a while, until Grace finally sat back in her chair.
"Uh... sorry." Grace said, eyes flicking back and forth between Jo's face and the door handle. The door handle must have been simply fascinating.
"I... you're the first person I've actually told about this." Grace said, cheeks turning... black? Bradley was apparently using an SEP field or something because he was currently typing something while not attracting attention. "I haven't even told my friends yet. I... worried. And... I'm... I'm glad you accept me, okay?"
"And I take it you haven't told them about your awakening?"
Grace shook her head. Jo patted her on the shoulder.
"I really want to but I'm not sure it's a good idea." Grace shook her head. "Also my phone has nannyware on it."
"Hayden might be able to do something about that." Jo said. Then, at Grace's look of confusion, "Alexis Hayden, one of the recruiters here. She knows a fair amount about IT and jailbroke her own phone."
"Rooted." Grace said. "What? I like computer stuff myself. The only reason I didn't do it myself is because I was worried about being caught." Was prompted by Jo's head tilt.
"...Fair enough." Jo sighed.
Then Grace startled. "Right, the form! So I filled out most of it, but I haven't picked a new last name. Because my par- gene donors don't deserve any influence over my name. But I haven't decided on a new one."
"What about your friends' last names?" Jo suggested.
"That... that seems really... assuming a lot." Grace said, blushing again.
"Have you consider being Grace Ray?" Bradley finally entered the conversation.
"Ray?" Both Grace and Jo asked.
"Yeah, her aircraft look like cyborg rays. Like the sea creatures." Bradley stated.
"Nah, someone might think I'm a Gundam reference and I stopped liking that after I hatched and realized they never let the women do anything important except simp after the men." Grace sighed.
"Manta?" Bradley tried.
"Stingray?" Jo suggested, pulling out her phone.
"Those both sound like I picked them." Grace said. "Which... I will, but I don't want people to know that."
"Mobula." Bradley said. "Species name for devil rays."
Grace shook her head.
"'All rays belong to the subfamily Batoidea.'" Jo quoted, looking at her phone.
"How do you spell that?" Grace asked, pulling the manila folder out of her hold.
---------------
-/Grace/-
I slumped into the hotel bed, luxuriating in the softness. Stupid gene donors thinking that uncomfortable beds would "toughen me up."
According to Petty Officer Galane, by tomorrow or Monday I should officially be Grace Selene Batoidea. Navy rep to cut through red tape, apparently.
I also got my phone back. And I ditched the old Iron Man case my gene donors forced on me in exchange for a trans flag case that Matt, another recruiter at the office, ran out to buy. Hayden did remove the SIM card and kept the case. Matt volunteered to get a phone upgrade on the navy's dime, in exchange for using his old phone for a little counterintelligence play. He's going to smash his old phone, with my SIM card in it, and then toss the wreckage in a bag in order to mail it to the police. Hopefully that means my gene donors don't try calling me, since they think I smashed my phone.
It would take a week or so for the phone company to transfer the number to a new account and send us a SIM card, so I didn't actually have phone or texting service right now. And I didn't talk to Zoey or Luna over email, because I knew my gene donors would log into my deadname account and check it themselves. I did have a second email that I used for my secret accounts, but since I would only check it at school, it wasn't that useful for them, so they never used it.
I did have internet access via hotel wifi, so my best options was probably to switch over my phone to that other account. Which, since I had to use a stylus for my phone, was going to be a pain.
"Whatcha doing?" Hayden asked, settling in one of the chairs. Because yes, I needed adult supervision. Because minor. And BMINT.
"Switching my phone to another email account." I said. "Which is going to be my primary account from now on. Probably should set up a professional-sounding email too." After all, Halo-Spartan-093 wasn't the most professional name ever.
"Fair enough." She said.
Hayden was kind enough to give me a companionable sort of silence at that point. With my phone now set up properly, I started setting up that chat app I used. I'd had to use it through the web client at school before, but now I could finally install it on my phone. It took a moment, but then I had it running and logged in. I was only a member of one server, though.
Then I finally changed my display name. I'd set it to "keysmashjkfd" because I couldn't figure out anything when I stumbled across the place two years ago. I began regretting it about almost immediately, as I quickly learned about the "lesbian keysmash." Then they had to tell me what a lesbian was.
My first response was "Wow that sounds nice I'm jealous." And then "What's with the egg emojis?" It took me far too long after that for me to realize the obvious.
I also changed my profile picture from the default to a manta ray, while I was at it.
keysmashjkfd has changed her name to Grace.
LucidLunacy: Aww, nooo keysmash-chan
Grace: Who wants to play good news bad news
Bunny_ZZ: RIP keysmash-chan
ZoeyKitty: @Admin, how do you undo name changes
Matthew: Keysmash-chan, congrats.
Grace: Wow you people
Maria (Admin): @ZoeyKitty bad kitty, get a spray bottle
Maria (Admin): Congrats, Grace.
Maria (Admin): So the bad news?
Grace: Bad news: got kicked out of my gene donors' house. No clue where I'm going to go. And my phone service got turned off so I can't contact my friends.
Grace: Good news: got kicked out of my gene donors' house. I'm not on the streets. Legal situation is looking like up. They gave me a form to get my name changed. Phone is clear of nannyware.
Matthew: Hope CPS makes the right choice.
Matthew: They put nannyware on your phone?
Bunny_ZZ: Yeah it'll take a couple weeks for your name change to get processed
Maria (Admin): Kids these days are so impatient
Maria (Admin): In my day we had to file paperwork uphill both ways in the snow and we liked it
LucidLunacy: Yeah it took a couple weeks for me too
Grace: It gets done when I get done.
Grace: Unless I want to go down to the courthouse and breath down their necks or something.
Bunny_ZZ: That would be amusing
Bunny_ZZ: A teen girl trying to intimidate some grown clerk
Except it wasn't that funny. I towered over everyone else. "Without heels" I would still be taller than everyone I've met today. And since I was stuck wearing them since I had my inner driveshafts coming through my ankles, I'm basically going to be just under the limit for standard doorways all the time.
And that didn't even count my glowing red eyes.
LucidLunacy: lol yes
Lunacy and ZZ were both about my age, from what they said. So imagining themselves doing it was probably pretty amusing to them.
ZoeyKitty: That is an amazing image, yes.
ZoeyKitty had a job somewhere, which apparently kept her too busy at times to keep up with the server. So she couldn't be the Zoey who was my friend from school.
Maria (Admin): I know a friend who did that
Maria (Admin): He kept showing up at the courthouse every day to check up on the progress
Maria (Admin): Small town, only two clerks
Maria (Admin): So they got pretty annoyed and gave in after a month
"Hey Grace, do you want to take a shower first?" Hayden asked, interrupting me.
"It's probably going to take me a bit to figure out how to do that." I thought about it. "Also, my heels might break the shower floor. You should probably go first."
"Wait, really?"
"Yup." I said.
Grace: I just want this transition period to be over as soon as possible
Grace: Pun not intended
Maria (Admin): Dunno, getting your name changed counts as part of your transition
Bunny_ZZ: And then you can take the next step towards being your cutest self.
I wasn't actually sure what to say about that - I just got handed a miracle transition with almost everything I wanted. (And it wasn't like I could - or wanted to - test if I did get that last item on the list, right now.) Okay, there was the entire BMINT/Abyssal thing but right now I wanted to just bask in everyone looking at me and seeing "girl."
On the other hand, on the internet no one can hear you lying through your weird teeth. Which I still hadn't seen yet.
Grace: Yeah.
Grace: Looking forward to it.
Then Matthew posted a meme with two panels of a girl in the rain. "Bad news: I got kicked out of my gene donors' house" captioned the first panel, where she was probably crying. "Good news: I got kicked out of my gene donors' house" and now she was smiling and giving a thumbs-up.
Bunny_ZZ: Did you have that one prepared
Grace: Matthew, fastest meme in the west
At that point Matthew posted the "Matthew, fastest meme in the west" meme he'd been posting for the past month, Lunacy sighed and changed the topic, and chat moved on. Then I got interrupted by Alexis, who was done with the shower.
When I mentioned that to chat, everyone nodded in approval on me finding shelter that would let me take a shower.
I took a moment to look at myself in the mirror, which I had to do by leaning back against the wall. This wasn't my first look in a mirror, since I did that right after waking up, but this morning I was a little more concerned about getting caught by my gene donors.
Bunny_ZZ's comment about being cute was way off. I turned out beautiful and aristocratic. If I put my hair into ringlets, the ojou-sama energy would spike high enough I would only be able to laugh while covering my mouth with a fan, and Alexis would find herself spontaneously wearing a historically accurate maid outfit. At least having my hair in a ponytail, tied up high and dangling down to my hips, gave a bit of "princess-knight" vibe to my look.
A black anime schoolgirl outfit and thigh-high boots and opera gloves made out of black armor segments gave me a dark magical girl vibe. Under that, my new body wasn't just curves, however impressive my fuel reserves were. I also had signs of muscles all over my body - a little subtle, but definitely present.
9/10, everything is exactly as I want except the color scheme, which will cause major problems. Would buy from this seller again.
My grin reminded me to check my teeth. I had normal incisors, two sets of canines instead of one, and my molars were all fused together into one long stripe with tight, regular diagonal grooves in them. Those grooves continued into... I touched my tongue, feeling the cartilage chevrons on them. Okay, that was unusual. I tried rolling my tongue into a tube, which went just fine. I shrugged, since if it wasn't affecting that I don't know what effect it would have.
My top and skirt were simple enough to doff, but my underwear.... I hadn't dealt with those before. And while my arms were flexible enough to reach the center of my back, it took me a bit to realize the clasps were under my armpit. The free pair of panties I got with my new outfit had side clasps so I didn't need to destroy them on my outer armor, which... can I find other panties like these? Can I even get regular panties past my driveshafts?
I dragged a few dozen of my light symbionts from sleep and had them pick up the needed limbs at armory nodes - reciprocating brushes, pressurized water sprayers, and a few other types sprinkled throughout the work party. While they were doing that, I got the shower warm, then stepped in. Cleaning the areas of my body not covered by metal was pretty nice, though my hair took a while. And while I probably didn't need to clean my metal every day, good habits were important and learning now would be better than learning later.
While I had my arms and legs mostly out of the spray, doing my hair, the hull cleaning detail went to work on the inner hull and inside of the outer armor on my forearms and legs. Besides blasting the metal with water and running the brushes over them, a few of them checked the sealants and lubricants on the bolts. I had hundreds of them, and while I couldn't think of a reason off the top of my head that I would need to remove my armor, it didn't hurt to make sure everything was in good condition.
Then I turned off the spray - and surprisingly, didn't start shivering - and had them do the outside of my outer armor. No bolts to inspect here. If my skywings were rays, my symbionts were crustaceans. The light ones were tiny lobsters, with a halo-like omnidirectional eye and two forward eyes for details, along with a pair of small antenna at the head. Four arms attached just behind that, with a narrow body with eight legs and a flat tail. Except unlike crustaceans, my symbionts had more gaps than armor. My armory nodes could grow plate carriers for them if I was boarded, but really they were for keeping me together and in top shape. Were boarding actions a thing with shipgirls?
Doing my limbs went fine, but my back looked to be a problem. My symbionts' magnetic claws didn't work on my skin, so getting them up and down the gaps in the metal was going to result in them dropping. They were a couple centimeters long so maybe they could chain themselves-
Right. I shook my head, feeling my hair wave across my back. Then my symbiont cleaning party went from the base of my skull to the end of my coccyx and the tops of my hips easily, climbing up and down on bundles of hair while making sure my metal was clean.
With my symbionts having removed their arms and gone back into sleep, I was left to dry off. I couldn't get the towel inside my armor, but fortunately most of the water had already flowed out through gaps, leaving just a little water to evaporate. Probably going to need to check for rust and other problems from that on a regular basis.
At least I didn't break the shower floor. Once I was dry, dressed, and done in the bathroom, I exited, turned off the lights, went to the bed, flopped down face-first, then flipped onto my side when that turned out to be uncomfortable now. Amazing. I genuinely love that.
It didn't take long for me to plunge into unconsciousness.
This is the first chapter that I haven't published before.
Apparently, this is the "no Witch From Mercury" timeline. Truly a dark fate for humanity.
No, Grace isn't that deep into Halo lore. Her internet time was limited.
Grace's notes 3
Grace's teeth and tongue are based on ray mouth plates, in particular aetobatus narinari for the chevron groove thingy. Which is actually the ray her fighters are based on, by the way.
