A Certain Gravitational Villain (A Certain Magical Index Quest)

[X] "I really don't think so. Kneel."
- [X] Use gravity manipulation to make them all kneel.
[X] "Come on, kid. And be more careful." Lead Last Order away.
- [X] Set up our defenses so that any attack results in much pain to our attacker and get on with our day.

The deescalation choice makes sense for a hero.

We are not a hero.

Why are people voting to try to appease her? Apologizing isn't exactly our style.

So when she inevitably refuses and starts to threaten us, we get called a good person for defending a child and people think we're in the right.

Make no mistake, she isn't backing down. This is just us trying to seem like the bigger person before we annihilate her ass.

[X] "I'm really sorry about that, but can you forgive her? She's just a kid."
-[X] start observing the environment in case fight breaks out. Take note of her and her team location.
--[x] if she ask for 'compensation', decline, saying that you don't see any damage to her. Start revying up your engine to give Meltdowner a beating if she keep pushing. Monologue the hell of it to keep her off balance.
---[x] if things start getting too unfavorable for you, tells Last Order to go to Accelerator. You don't think there's any need, though.

I guess that makes sense, though I'm not convinced she'll start anything.

Level 5s can do pretty much whatever they like, for the most part, but attacking a child in a public place is extreme even by Meltdowner's standards, and she doesn't even have much of a motive to do so if we apologize. I admit, it's been a while since I actually saw the source material, but I don't recall her being that crazy.

Just bear in mind that we might successfully avoid a fight here by apologizing, and that would be boring.

I'm not totally sure myself, but look at the update. Her friends are all about how we're in for a bad time, and she herself seems pretty pissy right now.

See, I've seen the source material exactly never, so I'm limited in what I have. But when someone says we're cruising for a bruising, I seriously doubt an apology will make them stop if they're already on that path.
Just bear in mind that we might successfully avoid a fight here by apologizing, and that would be boring.
Fair enough.

I really hope we act like we don't know who she is only to further irritate her.

Eh, sufficiently advanced pragmatism is indistinguishable from benevolence, until suddenly it's not.

I want to beat up all of the level fives and become number 1. I don't want to make Accelerator try to kill us because we endangered one of his friends, even if we did offer him the chance to come along and protect them like the kind and wonderful person we are, because fighting him is a pain.

Hey guys, so I was poking through some sites and saw this thread. I remember tossing some ideas back and forth a few months ago, so here's a few more. I still don't know very much about how physics actually works, though.

Black holes are an important point of research, because they are weird as shit. Basically, gravity distorts space-time, meaning we could try to learn applications like time dilation and worm-holes/teleportation with enough work. This extends even to the point of the event horizon, where space and time have completely flipped and instead of moving through space, you can move through time. If we can do some work on this, we can work on regressing to previous points, undoing damage and even aging. I remember asking for ideas about how to regenerate, and hey, I found one! Of course, there's an "inside" to a black hole, but the event horizon has already completely disjointed it from normal space, so how does that work? Well, by my understanding, the theory is that normal space inside a black hole is completely different from normal space outside one. In other words, if we work hard enough, we can distort laws of physics. We already can, technically, but whose counting?

We can also try phase shifting or something to dodge attacks, and shouldn't be too hard to warp things like light so we should be able to make illusions without too much effort. Not to mention there's something to be said for a good old fashioned crushing. I'm largely picturing him with impressions from some telekinetic shit, bits of mecha shit, some Star Wars RPGs, and bits of Tsukihime in my head right now.

Anyway, I don't mean to suggest all of this would be easy to accomplish, but I hope that helps as an image of gravity in comparison to Accelerator's angel mode and Misaka's level six shift and Gunha's guts, and also how Orbit could try to fight Accelerator in the first place. Well, it's not like the others can do very well against him in a basic format anyway, so it's probably fine.

It's just... gravity Moves things. That's it. Time is just things moving in a pattern. You can't go backwards in time... without using an AIM Field, anyhow, so you might have a point, but almost certainly probably not.

The funny thing is, Espers are basically fucking magicians, and Magic Users are closer to actual scientists.

Well, setting my personal antipathy for that sentiment aside, the magic in the series is reasonably well understood. The thing is that it works for a lot of reasons. Hence the common saying (about Raildex) that magicians are more like scientists, who study, teach and learn, and the science side are more like magicians, because their power comes from magic, perception, and belief. Explicitly; espers work because the believe the world to be different than it is and maintain that belief until the world gives in, and the artificial esper creation process was founded by the Kiharas, mad scientists who gained their bullshit mad science with vague reality warping natures by the use of magic when Crowley enspelled the land Academy City was built upon.

WCHB Kurogami Hayate Part 2
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN - KUROGAMI HAYATE
PART 2

"Sempai?"

Hayate cursed his luck as he tried to figure out a way out of the situation he had found himself in. When today's data acquisition target happened to been in the most secure lab in the business he had dealt with it. When the security code protecting the data had turned out to be more complex then his intel had said he had dealt with it. When the alarms had gone off for absolutely no reason he had dealt with it. But now Misaka Mikoto, his kohai and possibly the worst person for him to run into while on a job short of Accelerator himself, was standing between him and freedom and he was this close to losing his shit. Today was simply not going his way.

Mikoto, on the other hand, simply stared at her sempai in confusion. Uiharu had been investigating a series of data thefts that had left absolutely no evidence. The only reason people knew that the thefts had even happened was when the data showed up for sale on black market sites on the Internet. Uiharu had been telling them about the thefts and how she had installed new security protocols in the more likely targets for more thefts when one of those very security protocols had gone off and Mikoto had rushed to the scene of the crime. Normally Anti-Skill would be the one investigating and not Judgement but they had absolutely no leads and so they had asked Uiharu to see what she could do. And the only reason Anti-Skill had asked Uiharu personally was because of her growing reputation as a computer genius, a reputation she owed to her tutoring by Kurogami-senpai. Then same Kurogami-senpai that had was standing in front of her now, caught at a crime scene red-handed.

"ONEE-SAMA!" Both Hayate and Mikoto where pulled from their thoughts by Kuroko's shrill cry as she appeared behind Mikoto from out of nowhere with Uiharu and Saten. "You shouldn't run off with out us Onee-Sama! Who know what could ha- URK!"

As soon as she had heard Kuroko start talking Mikoto had spun around. However when she did she say her friends suddenly go stiff and Kuroko stop talking midsentence. "Guys? Are you okay? What's going on?" Mikoto asked with concern. No response. "Kuroko? Saten? Uiharu? This isn't funny." Mikoto started to run towards her friends.

However, before she could get more than one step all three of them called out to her in perfect unison. "Don't move."

"What-"

Kuroko pulled out three of the needles she kept strapped to her legs and started talking. "Don't move or I'll teleport one needle each into Ruiko, Kazari and Kuroko's brains."

Mikoto couldn't believe her ears. What is going on? She thought to herself. She stared at her friends as they just stood there with blank looks in their eyes. Are they being controlled some how? Brainwashed?

Kuroko started talking again. "I truly do regret having to do this. I take no pleasure in acts of this nature…"

Kuroko… The way she's talking isn't like her. It sounds more like…

"… But I'm afraid I have little choice." Mikoto spun around once again as Hayate finished Kuroko's sentence.

"Sempai, what's going on?" Mikoto fought valiantly to keep her voice from trembling but ultimately lost that battle. One could hardly blame her though, considering the maelstrom of emotions that was raging within her at the moment. Fear for her friends' lives, confusion as to why Kurogami-senpai was doing this and anger at his betrayal, all topped of with annoyance with herself. She was the Railgun damn it! The third strongest level 5 in the city! She should be able to handle this!

Hayate sighed and began to explain. "That's a simple question with a complicated answer Mikoto. To start with what you're most worried about your friends are fine. I'm controlling them by manipulating the electricity in their brains. It's not hurting them and after this is done, however this plays out, they won't remember a thing about this little incident. As for what I'm doing here-"

"You're a criminal." Mikoto cut him off.

"Yes, I am." Hayate nodded. "I won't try to justify it to you. Anything I say would sound like cheap excuses."

By now Mikoto had mostly recovered from the shock of Hayate's betrayal and now was mostly just angry. "So now what? I just let you walk out of here after you've threatened my friends and betrayed my trust?" Mikoto was yelling now.

"Mikoto…" Hayate began before Mikoto yelled at him again.

"NO! I trusted you! You were my friend, my teacher! And now you're threatening to kill my friends? Do you even care? Did you ever care?!"

"Yes. Of course I do." The sheer pain and regret in Hayate's voice stopped Mikoto short. "And at the same time I don't. I can't. There's something wrong with me Mikoto. I'm incapable of feeling empathy for my fellow human beings. I see the people around me as objects. But that doesn't mean I don't care about the people that are mine. And you are mine, Mikoto. You're precious to me and so are Ruiko, Kazari and Kuroko."

"You have a funny way of showing it!" Mikoto yelled at him again.

"I suppose I do." Hayate smiled a wistful smile. "Still, what I'm doing, despite how it looks, is for the best for all of us. I don't want to lose you Mikoto. I don't want to go the jail either and I most certainly don't want to die, which is became a definite possibility as soon as you showed up."

Mikoto blanched. Did Kurogami-senpai really think she would kill him? He was her friend. Or at least, she thought he was. Mikoto shook her head and started paying attention to Hayate's words again.

"This would be a lot easier for all of us if I could just make you forget too but I can't, for the same reason that Misaki can't control you. The EM field that your powers generate interferes too much for that. But you should be able to bring that under control and dampen the field. If you do that then I'll wipe your memories of this incident and we'll go back to normal."

Mikoto crossed her arms and glared at him. "So what, I dampen my EM field and just let you fiddle with my brain? Un uh, no way! How do I know you won't brainwash me into being evil or something? You could completely change my personality!"

"I would never do that." Hayate said forcefully, surprising Mikoto with the vehemence with which he spoke. "Do know why you're precious to me Mikoto? Sure, the fact that you're a Level 5 is incredible but that's not why I value you. You're precious because you're you. Your heroism and your kindness, your temper and your impulsiveness. All your little quirks like your love of Gekota stuff. That's what makes you so valuable. That's what makes you precious to me. I wouldn't ever change that."

Mikoto couldn't help but blush. Taken out of context that would have sounded a lot like a love confession. Hell, it sounded like one in context too!

"Mikoto, lower your field. Let me do this. I'm not bluffing on killing the girls. I don't want to do it but I'll do it if I have to. Please."

Mikoto took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Honestly, she should just blast him right now. Kurogami-senpai had broken her trust and held her friends hostage. He had admitted to being a criminal and a psychopath. If what he said was true he would never see her as anything more than an object. But…

"Trust me."

He was still her Senpai.

Mikoto breathed out and opened her eyes. "All right Senpai. How do I do this?"

Hayate gave her a gentle smile and Mikoto felt her heart skip a beat. "Let's start with taking some deep breaths, just like we practiced…"

So here it is, the WCHB I promised @Camellia. Hayate is know for his very precise control and was told to teach Mikoto some self control after her temper caused one to many incidents. Because of how he can hack computers with his mind he has an unrivaled knowledge of programming and started to teach Uiharu some tricks after Mikoto introduced him to her friends.

Very nice... And it's always nice to see the music spreads... CX

I guess that makes sense, though I'm not convinced she'll start anything.

Hey, we're Lawful Evil. That means using the law to our favor.

Like mentioned above, as long we're not the one to throw the punch first, we're not in the wrong according to law.

And the word must sounds like we're 'trying' to deescalate. Though, I hope it does sounds like that.

No need to get Accelerator immediately, we got this.

I know it's just an Omake but could people give their thoughts on the WCHB? I do this to improve my writing and I'd love to know what you guys think.

Tis wonderful. Drawing up fanart of our favorite senpai right now. It's all absolutely amazing.
"Sempai?"

Hayate cursed his luck as he tried to figure out a way out of the situation he had found himself in. Then same Kurogami-senpai that had was standing in front of her now, caught at a crime scene red-handed.
There's Hayato going, well, this day's pretty bad maybe we can salvage it, nope, well at least Accelerator isn't here. Then there's Mikoto with her heroics going to catch the thief and no? It's senpai? And her sheer disbelief at the very thought. The line about Uiharu, how he was the one to teach her how to work her way around a computer, how that was why she was brought in. And he's there. It's painful. It's so very painful.
And after she sees her senpai where he very much should not be, her friends pop in and something's going on.

The third strongest level 5 in the city! She should be able to handle this!
And now her beloved senpai is issuing death threats. The data theft is at least a little bit impersonal. It's not Mikoto being hurt by that other than a general someone's breaking the law! feeling.

Hayate speaking through them is so wonderfully creepy. He's treating them like dolls. These are people he's implied to have friendly relationships with. Or at least their people that would be sorely missed by his friends. He threatens their deaths so easily. And then he has the gall to say that he regrets having to do this? Yeah, in Mikoto's shoes I'd be awfully pissed if I could manage to get past the trusted friend betrayal bit.
As for what I'm doing here-"
It's not hurting them? You're mind controlling them! You just admitted this in the sentence before that! 'However this plays out they won't remember a thing' well yeah, it'd be hard to remember shit with needles in your brains. Hayate's just so calm. So disassociated from this entire mess. It doesn't feel like he's really all that emotionally involved. Which is beautiful.
"You're a criminal." Mikoto cut him off.

"Yes, I am." Hayate nodded. "I won't try to justify it to you. Anything I say would sound like cheap excuses."
He's a criminal, yes, but that seems kinda unimportant right now? Mikoto, focus a little more on your friends. Pointing out that he's a criminal is not going to help.

She'd probably like some cheap excuses right now. Some kind of way to deny the fact that someone she admires is a bad guy. To justify how he acts and right him I guess? To find his motives and make him good? Idk, but this is such a lovely exchange. Mildly disbelieving statement, calm affirmation. This must be hell on Mikoto's emotional state. Well. More hell.

Understandable rant. I completely sympathize with her here. And I get the feeling that Hayate does not care. Mikoto's getting really emotional while Hayate's mostly just there.

With the way he's acting now, that's a really good question. Did he ever care?
And I guess you care more about Mikoto than Ruiko, Kazari and Kuroko too. Everyone plays favorites.

Is he acting? I'm pretty sure he's acting, but I want to feel like he's feeling it. And wow. Like that's not creepy. People are not things. People don't belong to you.

I love this. I'm in love. I love these kinds of stories, where one side is just. So invested in everything and they care a lot. Then there's that ine, that one who they care for and endangers without a second thought the people they care for. And for their own selfish motives!

You're a walking talking Railgun Mikoto. Yeah, you could kill him. Would you? (Could you? I'm not sure what with his electricity manipulation he has going on.) Probably not, but the possibility is there.

So the reason why he's holding their friends hostage is because he doesn't want to go to jail. I get that, but is seems so, selfish? He doesn't consider the lives of these girls precious enough to risk going to jail.
"This would be a lot easier for all of us if I could just make you forget too but I can't, for the same reason that Misaki can't control you. The EM field that your powers generate interferes too much for that. But you should be able to bring that under control and dampen the field. Wow. You're asking for a lot there, Hayate.

Mikoto. We do not let people fiddle with our brains period, evil brainwashing or not.
Thumbs up. Amazing speech. I wonder, if one of the other girls currently being held hostage had the level 5 powers instead of Mikoto would you still be telling her this? Or would you be threatening to put a needle in her brain.
Mikoto couldn't help but blush. Taken out of context that would have sounded a lot like a love confession. Hell, it sounded like one in context too!
She took the bait. Sigh. Expected, but still.

Social links really are the best. They can get top ranking level 5s to agree to let you mind jack them.
Mikoto breathed out and opened her eyes. "All right Senpai. How do I do this?"

Hayate gave her a gentle smile and Mikoto felt her heart skip a beat. "Let's start with taking some deep breaths, just like we practiced…"
This is so wonderfully terrible. Hayate gently coaching her like I can assume he coached her in a much more innocent and legal setting. So very emotionally manipulative. I am feeling emotions.

Amazing work right here RexHeller.

I know it's just an Omake but could people give their thoughts on the WCHB? I do this to improve my writing and I'd love to know what you guys think.
Hayate is a really cool fusion between Mikoto and Misaki's powerset, weaker than either's in their area of expertise, but that it has both electricity and mind control that makes it as potent as it is.

It is hard to get a grasp on if Mikoto would really allow herself to be mind-whammied if only because there is not enough to get me to feel that level of trust is warrented. Mainly because of its nature as an Omake with the readers having seen nothing from before then. A few paragraphs of backstory doesn't have as much impact as if we actually went through multiple chapters of their interactions first, obviously :p.

Hayate's way of talking seemed at first glance surprisingly genuine but the fact that it switches to Mikoto's perspective means that I have no idea whether he really will keep his word and not alter her mind more than erasing the memories of this event, or if he is just lying through his teeth while skillfully manipulating Mikoto.

That is actually a major plus because he is suppose to be manipulative and having the readers not know which way he would actually go is important. I would imagine that this would be where the players would vote on whether to mind control her against what he said or whether he would keep his word.
hmm other things:
I don't want to go the jail either and I most certainly don't want to die, which is became a definite possibility as soon as you showed up."

Mikoto blanched. Did Kurogami-senpai really think she would kill him? He was her friend.

Probably should have put alarm bells in Mikoto's head especially with his admitted tendency to view people as objects. If he thinks that their relationship is at a level that her killing him is a viable result, as well as his threat to kill her other friends... while the friendship between the two of them isn't really seen as strong or trustworthy in his eyes, which means Mikoto shouldn't be putting nearly enough trust to lower her EM field and allow herself to be brainwashed.

However, she is both emotionally unstable and doesn't have enough time to think clearly about this, and so falls.

You can definitely tell how skilled in manipulation Hayate is to make her trust him in these types of circumstances.

Oh and couldn't his threat to teleport the needles into the characters brains be just as lethal if used against Mikoto? Even if she rejected his solution, was willing to discard her friends or at the very least put them at great risk, she was already in checkmate the moment Hayate got control of Kuroko. He might say that with Mikoto there his chances of going to jail or dying is high, but even as it was said, there was no chance of her victory. He completely has her at his mercy and yet still skillfully gives the illusion of choice. In a sense, that is beautiful.

Tis wonderful. Drawing up fanart of our favorite senpai right now. It's all absolutely amazing.

And after she sees her senpai where he very much should not be, her friends pop in and something's going on.

Well. More hell.

Understandable rant. I completely sympathize with her here. And I get the feeling that Hayate does not care. Mikoto's getting really emotional while Hayate's mostly just there.

With the way he's acting now, that's a really good question. Did he ever care?

And I guess you care more about Mikoto than Ruiko, Kazari and Kuroko too. Everyone plays favorites.

Is he acting? I'm pretty sure he's acting, but I want to feel like he's feeling it. And wow. Like that's not creepy. People are not things. People don't belong to you.

I love this. I'm in love. I love these kinds of stories, where one side is just. So invested in everything and they care a lot. Then there's that ine, that one who they care for and endangers without a second thought the people they care for. And for their own selfish motives!

Wow. You're asking for a lot there, Hayate.

Mikoto. We do not let people fiddle with our brains period, evil brainwashing or not.

Thumbs up. Amazing speech. I wonder, if one of the other girls currently being held hostage had the level 5 powers instead of Mikoto would you still be telling her this? Or would you be threatening to put a needle in her brain.

She took the bait. Sigh. Expected, but still.

Social links really are the best. They can get top ranking level 5s to agree to let you mind jack them.

This is so wonderfully terrible. Hayate gently coaching her like I can assume he coached her in a much more innocent and legal setting. So very emotionally manipulative. I am feeling emotions.

Amazing work right here RexHeller.
Thanks so much! This exactly what I wanted! and you're drawing more fan art? Awesome!

Some where in there I think you asked if Mikoto could kill Hayate. Short answer is yes, easily. Long answer is more complicated and it comes down to Power vs Control. Hayate has very little raw power but has his control is incredible. All electromasters have an innate resistance to electricity, dependent on how much raw power they have. Mikoto could be struck by lightning and be perfectly fine while Hayate would be in trouble if he got hit with anything more deadly than a taser. If Mikoto managed to tag Hayate with one of her thunderbolts then he would likely be seriously injured if not killed. However, Hayate would be able to divert any thunderbolts Mikoto threw at him, if only barely. Basically, he wouldn't be able to fight back but he could survive while running away and if he made one mistake he'd be dead.

As for what would happen if she fired a railgun at him? Same thing as everything else.
