This Bold part is important, Ichigo's first instinct when it comes to things is to protect people, this includes his zanpaktou.
Striking down a friend to get the shiny power up is very much not a big part of Ichigo's character and may cause problems for him in the long run if we do it.
Violent refusal of this happening however is very much in character, refusing to accept a friend dying (Even if he's a dick Ichigo gets on fairly well with him) and fighting it with everything he has is much more likely to result in something good happening.

This was Zangetsu's recommendation, and he seems to know better than us. Besides, fighting your sword for more power is how the Soul Reapers do. It's pretty normal, I think.
