Right, the cover story. Even if it's basically wrecked where Reimu is concerned.

At least I can agree to that last vote. Shouldn't raise too many eyebrows to call her a new friend and getting upset about Sanae's implications.

You slide out of the chair and interpose yourself between the shrine maiden and the table. Your clones slip out of you, making the shrine maiden's eyes widen, then hurtle forward, past her and over the crowd. They plow through the door into the entry hall and begin looking for your sister. Your eyes narrow and you lean forward menacingly as the shrine maiden turns back to you. "Ilya is our guest, and my new friend. I don't have many of those, and you will not continue upsetting her." Your clones smash into the front door, knocking it open and startling even more guests and interrupting the Prismrivers' performance. Now everyone knows something is happening, but you don't have any better way of reaching your sister, especially not quickly. One darts forward and then up, and the other two split to the sides in case Remilia is out there somewhere. The Prismrivers scatter from the stage as a clone swoops over them; you should probably apologize eventually.

"I … I'm …."

"Lady Illyasviel, calm down."

"I'm not to continue upsetting her? It's all your fault –!" You snarl and stomp forward, aura flaring brilliantly. The shrine maiden flinches, taking a step back.

"I said shut up! Everything you've said has made things -"

"That's enough, Flan." Your sister's voice cuts through your almost hysterical shrieks, and you spin to see her standing a few meters to your right, Sakuya behind her. "Calm down."

"She –" A raised hand cuts you off and you step back, wings crossed sullenly in front of you. Something shifts to your left – Yukari, Yuuka, and Yuuka's friend are present now, too. Great. Your clones start coming back, ignoring the excited youkai and occasional terrified human.

"You! Remilia Scarlet –"

"Shut up." The shrine maiden's mouth clicks shut audibly and Remilia walks toward her, voice projecting throughout the room. "Let me guess, Sanae: you saw our guest, came to a conclusion, and – against the advice of Reimu – decided to press your case immediately. You believed that Illyasviel was here against her will, a mere figment created because of her similarity to a fictitious character. And you presented that case to her, and to Flan, because you believed you were doing right and good and that you were helping." She pauses for a moment, then sweeps her hat off and bows deeply. "Well, Sanae Kochiya, my hat is off to you. You are truly impressive, a youkai of great power. I would have to make quite an effort to harm Illyasviel half so much as you have with but a few well-intentioned words. Bravo." She passes her hat back to Sakuya and begins clapping. You blink in confusion as the shrine maiden's face turns red.

"I'm not a youkai, I'm –"

"A living goddess. And a god is nothing but a particular sort of youkai. You are a fool, Sanae Kochiya, priestess of Moriya!" Remilia's good-natured tone of voice turns savage and the shrine maiden flinches. "This is Gensokyo, land of fantasy and illusion. And when someone comes here, happy and enjoying herself – you make every effort to shatter her hopes and dreams, to subject her to a normal life. And you don't even know anything about her, you simply assume that you are correct. After all, you are the hero, and the hero is never wrong, is she?" You glance at Ilya, and she has her hand to the side of her head and is staring at Remilia with wide eyes. Yukari is nodding, ever so slightly, and the mood of the room seems to have shifted – before they were ambivalent, unsure whether to support you or the shrine maiden, but now they seem to be supporting Remilia. The shrine maiden starts to say something, but your sister cuts her off. "Silence, shrine maiden! Apart from your idiocy in assuming you know what you are doing – you overstep your bounds! Illyasviel's provenance is of no matter in this; were she from the humans' Village, you could make accusations and barge in here to see justice done, but that is not the case, or even something you have considered! If she is a human from the outside world, you have no right to come here, disrupt my party, make accusations, or interfere at all. If she is a creation of Patchouli's magic to give my sister a playmate, you have no right to come here, disrupt my party, make accusations, or interfere at all. If she is Illyasviel von Einzbern, daughter of Irisviel von Einzbern and Emiya Kiritsugu, elder sister of Emiya Shirou, then you have no right to come here, disrupt my party, make accusations, or interfere at all! You have overstepped your bounds, priestess of Moriya." Now the shrine maiden seems taken aback, actually worried and uncomfortable.

"I –"

"I said to be quiet!" Remilia's roar nearly has physical force, and the shrine maiden flinches back. "You come here, pretending to be a hero, accuse my sister of something so crude and crass as to mutilate someone to keep her prisoner, disrupt my party, and harass my guest. Sanae Kochiya, that is why Reimu is infinitely your superior as Gensokyo's Shrine Maiden – because she understands how this world works. She knows what she can and cannot do, and she respects the divide between Human and Youkai. She is no hypocrite – and even if I hadn't pledged to support her so long as I can, I would never support a fool like you." The world seems to creak around you as Remilia continues her sneering diatribe, and the air itself takes on a red tint from your sister's exertion, and power bleeds onto her dress – almost literally, as a red splotch appears on her dress, and long, thick streak travels from her left shoulder to the hem, and more crimson droplets scatter over the rest of the once-white dress. "You will walk back to your shrine, Sanae Kochiya. You will climb the steps of the mountain of youkai with your own two feet, and you will not rest until you return to your shrine. Go." Something seems to snap, and the air feels dull and heavy as the shrine maiden turns woodenly and begins walking toward the wrecked door. The crowd silently parts for her – then begins filing after her, eventually leaving only Reimu, Yukari's group, the tengu, and Alice. Yuuka chuckles and claps her hands as Remilia's wings droop tiredly.

"Man, now I'm really upset I didn't get to kill you. It would have been fun, wouldn't it? A good show, though." She raises her parasol in a salute and saunters off; her magician friend bows politely over her staff and follows her.

"… I trust you won't continue to make a habit of this, Remilia? Or have you forgotten our last talk?" Remilia waves distractedly and Yukari takes a breath before nodding. "Well, we can talk again later." She nods and glances at Ilya, then a rift opens behind her, eyes peering out, and hands grasp her and her familiar, pulling them in and then vanishing as if it had never existed. Reimu crosses her arms as the tengu fly down; the second tengu is pale and seems to be trying to keep Aya between her and Remilia.

"So, do I get to know what's going on?" Remilia smiles at her before looking at Aya. The tengu shrugs.

"If they'll keep quiet, I guess I can change the report. But I'll have to give them something – everyone's going to know that something major happened between you and Sanae, if nothing else." The other tengu's jaw drops and she stares at Aya.

"Follow the brat and get her side of the story. Or just make something up – say that she said something incredibly stupid to my sister, which is perfectly true. And I might have something for you in a day or two, so keep your schedule flexible." Aya raises an eyebrow at that and Reimu clears her throat angrily. "What's going on … she's Illyasviel von Einzbern, Reimu. That's all that matters, really. For the rest – I think you know already, actually. If you still can't work it out, I'll tell you later." Reimu glares for a few more seconds before sighing and walking away, shaking her head. The tengu follow her. Alice looks at Ilya, then at you, then at Remilia, expression perfectly neutral. Her dolls, however, seem almost anxious, never quite as motionless as they were when you first entered.

"… I'm sorry, Remilia." Your sister smiles at you and shakes her head.

"It's not your fault; I meant to tell you to keep away from Sanae. And before I forget again – during parties, at least, if you need something, just say Sakuya's name. She'll be able to hear you and will come to see what you need. Sakuya, make sure you remind her before the next party."

"Yes, Milady." Sakuya bows deeply.

"U-um …. I …." You turn to look at Ilya; she still looks worried, and a little confused. You start to head toward her, but a small red chain appears against your waist, holding you back. You frown at your sister.

"I'll have to talk to Patchouli about some of her methods, I think. As for you – what you believe is true, is. This is Gensokyo, the land of fantasy and illusion. You are Illyasviel von Einzbern, as I told Reimu. You're as real as Flandre, Alice, or I." You frown, and so does Ilya. Your sister isn't being clear, and you're a little worried about that … although she definitely did something that tired her out, so maybe you should just give her some time before you try to get an explanation out of her.

"And I'm getting to hear all this … why?" Remilia sighs and faces the magician.

"Because your payment is bound up in the 'truth.' You are interested in helping, aren't you? You'll learn more about Illyasviel, about the 'truth,' and the nature of your payment should shed some light on things as well." You scowl. Remilia may be tired, but she's still capable of speaking plainly. That she isn't is a little annoying. And Ilya looks better, but is that because whatever problem she had was resolved, or because your sister did something to her? Still … maybe it can wait. If Ilya wants to stay at the party, you can put off finding out what's going on.

What do you do?

[ ] Make Remilia explain what's going on.

[ ] Take Ilya back to the library so she can get some rest.
- [ ] Ask her why Sanae's accusation seemed to upset her so much.

[ ] Stay at the party.
- [ ] See if Yuuka is still here. She seemed to be in a good mood.
- [ ] Find the fairies.
- [ ] Just go through the party and see if you recognize anyone.

[jk] Procede to.... "Cuddle", With her.

Stressed Ilya is unhappy Ilya. She needs to rest, but we should not inquire about her troubles, it could stress her even more.

I'm curious on why Yuuka in a good mood, besides Illya has her maid with her and we can ask Remilia to explain later.

Remi definitely is best sister, that was a truly impressive speech and Sanae got shut down hard. The whole thing will however permanently sour any kind of relationship to the Moriya shrine.
Yuuka seems amused which is either good or very bad depending on her characterization, Yukari seems kind of ok with it but her reactions are difficult to read at the best of times, and Reimu is predictably fed up with the whole business and just wants to get it over with.

The only other relatively safe option i could see here is taking Illya to meet the fairies but that can always be done later when it isn't during a party.
Also on the topic of fairies, the last chapter of Touhou Sangetsusei shows again that Star Sapphire truly is the best Fairy of them all.

Unlikely, the Moriyas are...used to pissing off a lot of locals because Sanae takes Leaping to Conclusions to an art.

Not to mention the fact that Yukari was right there, so whatever Remilia did presumably had, if not her blessing, then her tacit agreement.

Of course, they're still going to be a little salty about it :) Anyone have any desperate wish to visit the Moriya Shrine with everyone when Flan gets back?

Also, depending on how things go the next couple days, updates may be a little ... ragged. My apologies in advance if that happens.

You shake your head. "Um, I think we'll be heading back downstairs now. Thank you for listening, Alice." Your clones swoop down and return to you. Remilia frowns and Ilya looks up questioningly.

"Of course. Illyasviel, Patchouli can send a message to me when you're ready. Remilia." The magician stands up and nods politely to your sister before withdrawing from the ballroom.

"It's okay for you to stay - most everyone isn't going to remember what happened here, and those who do won't say anything." You smile.

"Yes, but they saw my clones go looking for you, didn't they? And I'm … well, me. People are going to be interested and nosy, and I don't want to put Ilya through that. And the Prismrivers are probably going to be really annoyed with me, and I don't really want to deal with them right now." You look over at your friend. "Unless there's something you really want to see?" She blinks at you for a second before quickly shaking her head.

"No, I … I guess not." You nod and look back at your sister. Remilia shrugs minutely before bowing her head.

"Alright. I'll see you later, then. Oh. Flandre, do begin thinking about whether you wish to accompany me to retrieve Verossa. If all goes well, it shouldn't take more than an hour, but it could take several days, and it really will be quite boring either way." She nods again and turns to leave. Sakuya bows to you and follows her. You frown at your sister; why would it take an hour? It shouldn't take more than a minute - open the portal near him, grab him, and return. Unless she doesn't want to disrupt things in that world … you shake your head and fly over the table to Ilya.

"Shall we start heading back?" Ilya nods and Leysritt begins pushing her wheelchair as you lead them back up the stairs to the gallery. "I'm not being too pushy, am I? If there is something you wanted to see …?" She smiles and shakes her head.

"No, there really isn't, and I am a little more tired than I'd expected. … Um, that woman? The one who said she wanted to kill your sister?" You giggle.

"Oh, Yuuka! I told you, didn't I? When we first came to Gensokyo, we had a grand time, killing or driving away many of the youkai that lived around here, and just fighting and killing all the other youkai who got upset with us. It was lots of fun, but we stopped before a lot of the really powerful youkai like Yuuka got involved. She seemed to have been looking forward to the fight, especially since it was before the Spell Card system was even developed, but the truce happened pretty much right before she could join in."

"Could she beat your sister?" You look up at the ceiling as you fly along in front of her, then shrug and look back down.

"In most cases, yes. She's a lot more powerful than Remilia, and she's probably a magician as well. In a situation where Remilia has to stand and fight and can't make use of back-up or an external source of energy, Yuuka should win. That's why we stopped fighting when we did." Ilya nods and looks thoughtful. You hum to pass the time, then sing a few songs as you glide through the air. Ilya joins you for a few, the ones she knows, but mostly you're singing alone to your little audience.

You finally make it back to the lab area, but neither Koakuma nor Ershin and Deis are around. Deis must have gone up to the party … did she see the incident? You hope she's not doing anything foolish, but she is a capable magician and your sister is up there. And Patchouli might be up there, too, if anyone wants to have a danmaku duel. You slip sideways to the wheelchair and lift Ilya up, swinging her gently as you fly back to her bed. She squeaks in surprise and you giggle before settling in, arms wrapped around her and chin resting in the crook between her shoulder and neck.

"Um, Flan? What are you doing?" You nuzzle her cheek; she sounds nervous.

"I'm snuggling. It's relaxing, isn't it?"

"I'm sorry, Flan, but … could you stop?" Her voice breaks and your eyes flicker open. You lean to the side, but all you can really see is that her eyes are tightly shut. After a moment you glance at Sella, and when she steps closer to hold up Ilya you fly back and around so you're in front of Ilya. Her eyes open and she looks unhappily at you. "Y-you really …?" You nod.

"I want you to relax, and I want you to be comfortable and happy. If you don't want me to hold you, I won't." She shakes her head and starts blinking her eyes quickly as tears begin forming.

"I - I do, but … but I - my -!" She starts crying and you stare at her for a moment as sobs rack her body, then sidle forward and kneel on her bed. You reach out and touch her forehead with one hand, and when her tear-filled eyes open up you smile at her.

"It's okay, Ilya. Really. I'm not angry. I don't know why, but it's something that's bothering you - but you also aren't saying anything about it, so I guess the reason is something complicated?" She stares at you for a moment before nodding. "Then it's okay. Later, when you're feeling better and aren't tired or anything, if you want, you can tell me. Okay?" She nods, still sobbing and hiccupping, and you leave your hand on her head for another few moments before pulling back. She starts crying in earnest and buries her face in Sella's chest. You clench your fists and duck your head, then shake yourself and gently float back into the air. You take one soothing breath before you start singing a lullaby. Ilya doesn't stop crying until you're partway through your third song, and even then she still shudders and hiccups, but she watches you as best she can through teary eyes as you keep singing.

Finally, Sella lays the sleeping Ilya down on the bed and brushes the hair away from her face, then produces a small handkerchief from somewhere and begins wiping her face. You finish the lullaby and float slowly down to the floor. "… I am sorry, Lady Flandre." You shake your head.

"It's okay, Sella." She bows deeply.

"Thank you, Lady Flandre." You shake your head and glance at Leysritt. She finally relinquishes the death-grip she had on her halberd, the only indication of the stress she felt during Ilya's breakdown, and is standing calmly out of the way. This isn't what you'd wanted when you brought Ilya back down, but she is resting. A victory, of sorts.

While apologizing to the Prismrivers would be a good thing, they are probably in another consort by now. Not a good idea to interrupt them at the moment. Besides, I'm pretty sure they won't challenge us to anything because of it.

Let's do it.

Temple raaaaaid

Let's just push Sanae into a random portal and wait until she crawls back out. Who knows, maybe she will find her favorite verse and learn to hate it after she went through multiple life and death experiences. When (if) she comes back, she will know whats up, but we tell her to keep quiet unless she wants to be pushed back in.

If they're in a concert when Flan goes up to apologize (if she does), she is perfectly content to wait for a suitable moment to pass on an apology; she's not going to interrupt a set of songs so she can apologize for interrupting the last set of songs, after all.
