Mahou Ronin Sachiko - A Drifting Magical Girl Tale

Er sorry, not getting the joke, if you meant to make one. Think you might have been referencing either that Power Rangers season or Vocaloid, correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, i was thinking that Sachiko was very "ninja-like", with illusions and everything. My dumb brain made a connection to the "purple ninja"-thingy, where any ninja dressed in purple is obviously the main character.

I'm really happy I manged to find this quest being a bit of a history buff, tad miffed that a Masamune sword was passed up, and a bit glad that no side has been picked yet for the inevitable Magical! Boshin War.
Also a few thoughts that came up as I was reading. I get the feeling that Vespucia would be the equivalent of the Dutch what with the Japanese tendency for a while to call everything Western Dutch while Leiferika feels American but maybe with a Nordic touch or actual recognition of whom ever discovered the continent. I can't tell if the Queen of Blades is doing as badly as Iemochi or if she has an actual chance of being effective ruler like Yoshinobu, while the Empress feels rather similar to Kōmei with the effort to reject foreign ideas.

Yeah, I admit it I was kinda thinking a bit that Sachiko in some ways does resemble a ninja in her tactics and powers, and that Kitsune in general could make for good ninja (even if the ninja are more associated with Tengu), what with illusion, shapeshifting and possession powers.

But on the contrary, Sachiko does tend to make her presence known before a fight, true to samurai fashion in order to claim the glory of defeating a certain foe. That however is usually a big no-no if you're a ninja.

Hey, it's always great to have more readers!

I did say before that Vespucia (full name the Vespucia Star Union) was meant to be the USA, referring to Amerigo Vespucci (Though it might more correctly be Vesputia, since America comes from his Latin name), while Leiferika was Canada (Vivi's even from its Montreal equivalent), though you do remind me that I should be thinking up a Netherlands equivalent.

Right now I can't say too much about either the Queen or the Empress yet, but in regards to history it'll likely be a bit of both yet also neither, I don't want to have any exact parallels to historical individuals otherwise things might get a bit redundant. I will say though that the rejection of foreign ideas will probably more be a thing with the Empress' followers than herself.

On another topic, I was wondering how people were feeling about me writing that Sachiko had sex with Junji in that last post (and that Garasha had a threesome to boot~). Surprising? A bit too sudden? Not what you expect in a Magical Girl Quest? Obviously I didn't write the sex scene itself, just the aftermath.

I didn't mind at all. And doesn't seem out of place considering what image you chose for our appearance.

If I may make a suggestion, how about the United Provinces of Orange?

Speaking of the image, I was hovering between this one (Fate/Extra Caster) and Touhou's Ran Yakumo, since they were the first two to come to mind when I pictured Kitsune. Went with Caster since Ran's a nine-tails, which'd be way too powerful this early in the game, what with some of the powers they're said to have (e.g.omniscience).

If I may make a suggestion, how about the United Provinces of Orange?

Yep, was definitely thinking something along the lines of 'Orange', either that or 'Lowlands' somethingorother.
Edit: Actually, possibly 'Ruyteria' or something like that.

Edit2: No, I've got it! Aardezee, partly due to much of The Netherlands being land reclaimed from the sea, and partly as an Earthsea reference.

Also updated the Cast page with images and the World page with Religions and Other Countries. In regards to images Junji's might be a little off from how I described him but it's close enough, while for Garasha it was hard finding Spider-Gwen images that didn't look obviously modern, so I had to fudge it.

As for Religions and Nations, a lot of them at this stage are still just obvious stand-ins for existing countries (albeit with Sweden as the big Empire instead of Britain, inspired by what Small Nerd and tygerbright thought about Leiferika), the idea was to try and Magical Girlify them.

Kyu: Clash of Blades.
The two samurai, one now a drifter, the other now an agent of the Sword Queen, stared at each other from either side of the town square, not moving an inch but with their hands tentatively by their weapons. Even without an announcer, almost all the townsfolk had showed up to watch this, the final match of the Festival Tournament.

Garasha then softly chuckled to herself "Sachiko, I urge you not to think of this as a matter of winning or losing," she said, then lunged forth with her assortment of weapons, fangs bared and eyes red "Just as a matter of how long you can last!".

The fox girl then sprung back, flipped over and tossed her iron fan like a boomerang at Garasha. Unsuccessful at knocking at knocking the gun out of one of her hands, Sachiko just landed on a nearby roof and replied. "You're right Garasha, it's not about winning, it's about having fun. And I'm gonna have the most fun beating you into a pulp!".

Garasha then attached her spear and naginata together with webbing, then used them as a makeshift whip to lasso Sachiko down from up high. Though the fox girl swiftly dodged, Garasha was able to use her web-whip to swing herself up to that same roof.

Sachiko proceeded to start bounding from roof to roof, knocking the snow on each down in an attempt to trip up her foe. Yet with a series of high-flying somersaults Garasha's pursuit wasn't slowed in the least, so Sachiko had to promptly start casting fireballs at her, not an easy thing to do when leaping over rooftops.

It wasn't long until Sachiko ran out of roofs when she landed on a large, pagoda-like storage house. As Garasha swung up right next to her, she made the choice to tap on a close-by frost mark with her sickle, which made it instantly dissolve as spidery poison seeped into it.

"Grrr, you don't scare me!" Sachiko shouted as she ran at Garasha. The Shinsengumi easily blocked, only to see what she'd blocked was but an illusive clone, as the real Sachiko brought down a jump kick to her head, nearly sending Garasha falling all the way down.

Garasha undaunted started shuffling along the edge of this roof, too fast for Sachiko to stamp on her hands. The ronin responded by simply sending a lightning bolt crackling along the ledge, to which Garasha, seeing Sachiko above her, instead dropped down to a railing below.

Waiting there a while, Garasha looked up only to see Sachiko nowhere. Quickly putting together what Sachiko was likely trying Garasha swiftly swung to her side, as Sachiko then slashed out with her fan from the inside the window where the Shinsengumi was seconds before.

Garasha swung back again and kicked Sachiko into the building. where the fox warrior's landing was softened as she was caught on one of the giant floats, prepared for the Festival. Sachiko hurriedly scrambled up the towering parade float, managing to make it to the top before Garasha spotted her.

"Sakkakuhime!" she transformed back into her star-adorned armour as she dived down upon Garasha, creating the illusion of a dragon to ride on. As Sachiko's dragon lunged right at Garasha and then flew back outside, the fox girl whooped and cheered as she flew above the crowd, shouting out loud "I did it! Victory is mine!".

Unfortunately, Sachiko had not spotted that Garasha was still clinging to one of this dragon's legs, making the ronin gasp and turn pale when she suddenly heard a voice shot out "Tokisasaru!".

Garasha then flipped up right in front of Sachiko, swung her blades and 'stuck' Sachiko in time. With Sachiko incapable of moving, she could only watch as Garasha delivered innumerable slashes onto her. The moment the time-stop wore off, Sachiko was helplessly rocketed sky-high from all those attacks at once, the Shinsengumi could only grin and say "I think not".

* * *
"Kamiya Garasha, we see the Shinsengumi definitely don't disappoint! As Winner of Kanaoka's Festival Tournament, please accept this trophy, a replica crescent moon in the image of the New Moon Dragon's emblem!" the town mayor said aloud, as Garasha bowed and accepted her prize in front of an ecstatic audience.

"And to Sachiko Baishou, in Second Place..." the mayor then turned to the kitsune "We present six coins, in the image of the Crimson Centurion's crest!". Sachiko sighed, bowed then took the coins, noticing the crowd's cheers were not at the volume they'd been for Garasha.

"Hey, Vivi" she then turned around to the journalist "You're still cool with interviewing the runner-up, aren't ya? Second comes right after first, huh?".

"Actually, I did have in mind-" Vivi began, then grumbled as she saw Sachiko's face droop down. "Fine, I'll interview the runner-up, I mean Garasha will probably just be cryptic at me anyway".

"With the combat over, may the parade begin!" the mayor called out, firing a blank into the air. Sure enough, the Kanaoka parade didn't disappoint, as pipers and drummers marched in time down the streets, tower-like floats depicting gods, heroes and monsters being carried on large wooden beams after them, a fox-shaped indent still being noticeable in one of them. Even though it was well into the night, the whole town shone from the lanterns within the floats, and the intricate patterns made by fireworks exploding high above.

Once the parade had ended, and Sachiko had sampled every food stall set up (Vivi had been too in awe of the massive floats to eat, though soon settled for some tuna), the ronin and reporter went to a convenient tavern for the night. While the prize money from the tournament had been generous, it was still nowhere near enough to go to that high-quality inn they'd seen before.

The log-built tavern could at least be described as cozy enough, with a suitably blazing fireplace that helped keep away most of the cold, and many bandaged fighters far less lucky in the Tournament drinking to forget their laughable defeats. Though it was hard not to pick up that, among a group of Oni, one seat had been noticeably left vacant.

Then something else caught Vivi's eye. "Huh, what's it?" she said, pointing to a glowing kanji rune at one end of the tavern.

"Ah, that's an amplification charm, like the one that announcer had!" Sachiko explained. "This one here's though for singing, since that's a popular group pastime here in Himikoku. C'mon, don't be shy, step up!" she then giggled and urged Vivi.

A red-in-the-face Vivi tried to expand her lungs, though had difficulty going any higher than a murmur. "Er, here, maybe this could help" Sachiko said as she offered to sake to Vivi.

A few drinks later, Vivi was twirling and dancing on top of singing an old Viking folk tune, or at least the garbled remains of one. Sachiko smiled and said "See, now you're getting into it!" before she joined in, the ronin's own voice-

[ ] -as captivating as a nightingale.
[ ] -rough and untrained, yet charming.
[ ] -like nails on a chalkboard.
[ ] Write-in.

Things weren't helped as what she was singing certainly wasn't in tune with Vivi, not that Vivi was in tune with anything right now.

"Mind if join in?" Sachiko's old opponent Tomoyo Sensoukami smiled and approached them, though rather than singing the drummer accompanied them on percussion. "I'm heading back down to Taiko Island tomorrow, so it'd be good for me to get some practice in".

Then just outside the frosted window, Sachiko spotted another familiar face. "Hey Garasha! Where ya going, get up here!" she grinned and pulled the Shinsengumi all the way onstage. "If I can't beat you in battle, I can least win at singing!".

"Sachiko, this is hardly befitting one of my station. Besides, I hardly have the time-" Garasha tried to shake her off, but as she saw Sachiko's pleading face then said "Oh, if you insist".

With Garasha' smoky contralto complimenting Sachiko's er, 'vibrant' soprano and Vivi's unpolished mezzo-soprano, the three of them kept singing into the night, though Garasha refused to take part in the other two's stage acrobatics.
The tunes were brought to an abrupt end however, when everyone in the tavern heard the window behind the singers and drummer shatter.

"Er, it was all her fault!" the four exclaimed in unison, all pointing at each other as they felt the glares of the whole tavern.
* * *
The next morning, Sachiko walked up to a formal kimono-clad Junji in the snow, as they and a number of villagers, many of them Oni, had gathered by the shore.

"And so, we bid a final farewell to Nakamura Motoharu, taken from us too soon. Let us pray his soul finds peace in his next life..." an Oni monk chanted, as a bed of flowers on a small raft, Motoharu's body being too far out of reach, was sent drifting on the ocean towards the horizon.

"*sniff*sniff* Motoharu man!"
Hearing those words, Sachiko was greeted with a sight she never thought she'd see, an Oni crying on another's shoulder. "Anytime I try to do poems I always forget how many syllables, yet that guy was a real pro! It-it just feels wrong y'know, I never thought he'd be gone" the Oni sobbed.

"Motoharu was one of the most talented poets our town had. Okay, Kanaoka ain't exactly known for poetry, but if it was, it'd be due to him" Junji muttered next to Sachiko.

[ ] Simply say nothing, let this moment pass in calm.
[ ] "From birth, a samurai is never allowed to forget the inevitably of death. Still, it's different when it does happen..."
[ ] Recite to everyone Motoharu's last haiku, that you had the honour of hearing him speak.
[ ] Write-in.

With that, it was time to think about moving from Kanaoka. It's not like a Ronin to stay in one place after all.

[ ] Head down Himikoku's West Coast with Tomoyo, since she talked about heading back to Taiko Island. Sounds good enough to you.
[ ] Go find Garasha to talk about that offer to join the Shinsengumi, what higher-paying work could a Ronin ask for? Even if it will likely make you an enemy of the Empress, or at least her supporters...
[ ] Hitch a ride on a cart heading inland, the Land of Dragons is known for its stunning scenery.
[ ] Eh, maybe stay in Kanaoka a little bit longer...
[ ] Write-in.

QM's Note: If you're wondering what good voting to have an awful singing voice will do, it might open up opportunities for higher skills in other arts. Plus, could help with Intimidation.

Also, you probably would've lost against Garasha no matter what, her being a Shinsengumi who can stop time and all. Plus I thought having Sachiko come second place would make for a less typical end to the Tournament.

Also also, let me if you think the Quest has gone far enough that it could use a Recap post.

Edit
I think its a tad early to do a recap, like I feel that the events so far have been kinda an introductory arc. So unless you plan on doing retrospectives of paths untaken I'd say does do a recap until after the first major arc.

Bye, Vivi!

^That might've been me being unclear, I might've gave the impression you were leaving right away. But no, the plan was for Vivi to come with you (I mean we hadn't even started the sword training we promised to do with her), unless anyone wanted to vote against that.

I see, thanks.

Okay, roughly three more hours before vote tally, could use a tiebreaker between 'Go with Tomoyo' and 'Head inland'.

Juu: The Land of Dragons.
"Junji, please survive
Ronin, our rematch... must wait
So I leave this life" Sachiko recited. "From memory, that was what Motoharu last said to me".

The funeral attendants all nodded solemnly, with one Oni saying "Yeah, it does sound like his work".

"Exactly!" Another Oni then yelled out. "Ya see? Motoharu was proof that us Oni should be gettin' more credit! 'Cause like, the rest of Himikoku still glorifies that Momohime for mass-murderin' a whole island of us!".

"Woah woah man, hey I'm not on her side, but wasn't that like millennia ago?" another Oni had to interject.

"Hey quit it!" it was Junji who then raised his voice "This is Motoharu's funeral y'know, give the guy a little dignity won't ya?".

With that, silence once again came over the crowd, as the boat with flowers for Motoharu at last vanished over the horizon.

* * *
"Come on Sachiko, cart's almost leaving!" Vivi called out.

"In a minute~" came a whine from Sachiko. She turned and took one last look at Junji, nuzzled up and kissed him, then gave a wink. "See ya, handsome" she whispered in his ear.

"Ya really sure you don't want ta stay?" Junji had to ask "Not that there's nothing goin' on in Kanaoka, but still, it's not the most exciting place either. Sure would liven up things here to have you around".

"Tee hee, thanks but no thanks" Sachiko could only say. "You know I'm a Ronin, people tend to be wary of us, so it's best I leave town before too many find out. Plus I promised to escort Vivi.
Though hey!" her face brightened up "Maybe you could come with me, it'd be so cool to have more friends with me on journeys".

"Ah hah, 'fraid I can't" Junji turned her down "I may of the lowest, barely-qualifying rank, but I'm still a samurai, so I've still got my territory to protect, people here to serve. Well, much as my busted wing and eye will let me...".

"Sachiko!" Vivi again.

"Oh alright" the fox grained, waving goodbye to Junji as she ran past Vivi and hopped aboard the cart, headed for the mountains.

Said cart, though its human driver looked normal enough, was some wooden seats and a space for supplies perched atop, it then stood itself and made itself visible... a giant rhinoceros beetle, Kabuto as the locals knew it, a fact Vivi immediately had trouble getting used to.

"Y-you travel on these?" her sweating face gasped out.

"Oh these? Yeah, pretty cool aren't they, don't get to see this form of travel much these days in Himikoku, so good to see they still got 'em around these parts!" Sachiko looked unfazed, though it wasn't much longer before Vivi ended up fainting.

The bus-sized beetle climbed high into the mountains, mostly sticking to paved roads but occasionally having walk up walls where maneuvering space got tight.Though snow was still there on the taller peaks, the frost was melting away in a wide area around them, revealing lush green trees, blossoms about to open and rejuvenated streams and falls as far as the eye could see.

The sky bright and shimmering, staring closely enough one could see great dragons leaping their way upstream, wild Kabuto clawing their way through forests and fields, Oni proving their strength by climbing to the mountain summits, and raven-winged Tengu swooping down from on high to tease and claw at said Oni.

"Vivi, Viviiiii, wake up! You've got no idea what you're missing out on!" Sachiko couldn't stop herself from shouting in Vivi's ear.

"W-what? What the-" Vivi took in the vast vista around her, though as she looked down and realized how high up she was, her pale self almost fainted all over again. Sachiko only sighed.
* * *
The Kabuto eventually stopped for a short rest on a ledge overlooking an enormous, crystalline lake, formed within what must've once been a volcano. "Lake Funkako!" Sachiko stared wide-eyed at it, to the point where she almost forgot the eel snack she was munching on.

"It's... certainly something" Vivi almost seemed lost for words. "Sure makes me glad I didn't stay in Kanaoka, especially since those float-makers weren't willing to give any interviews about their craft. Could've done with something other than that beetle though" she then hissed.

All of a sudden Sachiko then struck the reporter with a wooden sword, having snuck up from behind. "Bonk!" she announced "You've already failed the first test!".

"W-what was that for?! First test, what?" Vivi exclaimed.

"You didn't forget, did ya? You wanted to learn swordfighting, 'member?" Sachiko smiled at her. "There's your first lesson right there, learn to anticipate sneak attacks!".

"Oh yeah, now I remember. Guess I got sidetracked what with the tournament and parade and- Yeowch!" Vivi yelled out as Sachiko hit her again.

"Hmm, looks like you're not gonna be a fast learner" Sachiko muttered, before tossing the wooden blade into Vivi's hands. "Okay, time to start!".

Vivi then lashed out, striking in all directions with the blade... only to have Sachiko dodge every one of her blows. "Wow, you clearly don't know what you're doing" Sachiko laughed and made Vivifrown. "That's okay though, sometimes fighting like that, with zero regard to technique, can catch even trained fighters off-guard".
"Now Vivi" Sachiko's tone grew stern, as Vivi stopped to listen "What I'm about to tell you next might be the most important thing a Samurai can learn. Are you ready?".

"Yes, of course" Vivi stood alert.

Sachiko nodded, her finally saying "You are dead".

The ledge over the lake was silent for a bit, save for the Kabuto munching on grass, till Vivi said "Excuse me? Er, kinda happen to be alive actually, last I checked".

"No no, you're not getting it" Sachiko shook her head "If you're gonna fight like a samurai, it's paramount that you can come to terms with the inevitability and all-pervasiveness of death. A samurai can only fight to their fullest if they treat every fight like it's their last. As long as their Princess survives, that is all".

"...Yeah well, I'm kinda not a Samurai, nor planning to be, just wanna be good with swords, that's all" Vivi gradually responded.

"Hey, I'm just teaching you the way I was taught! 'Sides, thought you were the one who wanted to learn about our culture?" Sachiko protested.

"I did I did! Just, well, I was hoping I could stay away from the more, er, grisly bits of it" Vivi tried to explain. "Also, thought you no longer had a Princess".

"What the- aw come on!" Sachiko burst out, before she breathed deep and muttered "Did you have to bring that up? Er, anyway, let's keep moving on with our training. Now how about we work on your-"

[ ] "-Strength, see how much force you can put into a single blow!".
[ ] "-Precision, work at targeting weak spots!".
[ ] "-Footwork, get your speed up before your enemy can react!".

Later on, as the Kabuto resumed its trek along the mountain trail, one particular sign caught Vivi's eye.

"I-Is this some kinda joke?!" she sputtered out. "Tenago Village, site of the Tomb of Sophia Salomonis?!".

"Huh, Sophia Salomonis?" Sachiko said the name to herself, before it came to her. "Oh yeah, she's the 'Messiah' figure to the Daughters of the Trinity? Ooh, which'd make this place one of those Hidden Trinity villages!".

"Hahaha, and if you know the first thing about Sophia, you'll know that her Holy Sepulcher's all the way on the other side of a continent from here!" Vivi now spat out, pulling out a thorn-pattern necklace from her jacket.

[ ] "Okay driver, could we stop in Tenago? Hey, let's go straight to that Tomb!".
[ ] "Okay driver, could we stop in Tenago? Vivi, maybe we should ask the locals 'bout this first?".
[ ] "Don't worry, probably just some mistranslation. Let's keep heading onto Shibori City".
[ ] Write-in.
