Winter is Coming: House Stark Quest

I'm not really for any plan that leaves Stannis hanging out to die. Because I would rather have Stannis as King than Renly, FAegon, or Dany.
My plan beats up the Lannisters and gives Stannis a staging post to eventually hit the south via Harrenhall, he can come to us for safety and Edmures army

If the Lannisters keep attacking Oxcross is impossible

Yeah, edited that to just Robb remaining on the offensive is fine if the Lannisters keep fighting.

Oh. Something else people should consider adding...prisoners that aren't ransomed going to the Night's Watch? Along with some funds.

I'd make my own plan, but I'm undecided on one of the most important parts. Ned has declared for Stannis, but can/should we do anything else. With Ned as LP our agency is a bit limited. He may consider not responding to Stannis's call to arms not an option.

If we're going to have to fight Renly, should we start preparing now?

Makes me wish we could somehow goad Balon to attacking Oldtown or the Arbor in the near future. But I doubt even he's that stupid.

..... then again.

At this point I think we'll just need to see what happens in the next couple months and just react to it. Preparations will largely be just dealing with the situation in the Riverlands, and do what we can to undermine the Lannisters without marching on King's Landing.

I honestly prefer Stannis (when he isn't burning people) over those options as well...but beyond declaring for him, how can we help and hope to stand against Renly's 100,000 strong army.

Any ideas? I'd love to hear some.
Break the West so there are no armies marching on our flank, secure the East with marriage alliances, gather up as many Riverlanders as possible at Harrenhall, force the Crownlanders to march alongside the our armies, rally the loyal Stormlanders.
That should leave us free to focus about 55,000 men on the Reach. Led by Robb 'Demon of Oldstones' Stark who inflicted 8 to 1 loses whilst outnumbered 2 to 1 before against Tywin Lannister himself, we should be fine as long as Renly 'Charge with the sun in our eyes' Baratheon is leading that army.

Going to Oxcross as in canon wouldn't work out the same, though. Different circumstances.

Well actually...the North could focus on dealing with the West. Joffrey is still on the Throne, after all. We could be 'busy' taking care of that.

Of course, Baelish may then approach Stannis about making a deal in exchange for the Vale's support...

shit, Baelish could be making contact with the Iron Bank regarding the Crown's debt for all we know. The little weasel would pull something like that.

I honestly don't see why we have to.

We should just turtle up. Shore up alliances with the Vale (without marrying), extend olive branches to Dorne, and let the Baratheon brothers and Lannisters wipe each other out. Ultimately the Lannisters are unlikely to survive.

And what we should really do is prepare to wipe the everloving FUCK out of the Ironborn for whatever fuckery is about to come our way from them.

This is not a time to be over-extending ourselves, and a campaign in the West which is filled with castles and hills will be a pain in the ass. Let the problems of the South stay in the South.

Oh, right, shouldn't Balon be attacking the North any moment now?
Balon attacked the North in cannon with the excuse it was in a weak position.

He doesn't have that excuse now and the West is far richer and wide open. However he is a major idiot and hates the Starks a lot. So we don't know what he'll do

This is just putting me putting parts of other people's plans into my own, since I couldn't decide on the marriages initially I also got some good ideas from people, like gettin Nymeria back and marrying off Edmure to Lefford instead of Bran. If anyone has any feedback, I'm all ears.

[X] Plan Turtle
-[X] Military strategy and diplomacy:
--[X] Eddard will go North and Robb will stay south. The heir to Winterfell has proven himself an adept commander, and it has been too long since its Lord saw his lady wife.
--[X] Send a veteran force with many scouts north of the Wall to scout and find out more about this foe. Scouting should be spread in a wide but interconnected net to ensure communication between scouts. Ask for the aid of the Night's Watch in this endeavour. Their knowledge of the terrain and regular dangers will prove invaluable to the mission's success. The Night's Watch is dangerously low on manpower and supplies. Provide them what aid we can by sending prisoners, volunteers and a variety of supplies their way. Perhaps the gold gained from the Lannister's can pay for this? Call upon the aid of the Northern mountain clans and their hardy warrior, some of whom still speak the Old Tongue. Make sure that Ned asks for this assistance personally, since they're unlikely to be moved my messengers.
--[X] For now, House Stark must look to their own. Do not make any further announcements in support to any of the contenders for the Iron Throne. Stannis might be the rightful heir to Robert but none of them have yet proven worthy of our loyalty or support. Adopt a defensive posture in the Riverlands and clear out any remaining bandits and Lannister stragglers. Fortify strategic positions and crossing in the Riverlands and attempt to ensure the peasants can conduct one last harvest before winter. Any attack by the Lannisters, Renly or Stannis will be met with force, though a measured response should be taken against Renly. Robb will lead these operations in the Riverlands from Harrenhal with strong garrisons along the Southern and Western border but the threat of the Ironborn must not be neglected and Seagard should be defended vigilantly. The same holds true for the border with the Vale, though this is a lower priority than the South and West.
--[X] Gregor Clegane will be executed immediately and his head will be sent to Dorne. Such a monster can't be allowed to live and the late king's justice must be carried out in full.
--[X] Send word of Littlefinger's actions to the nobles houses of the Vale and ask them to ensure he finds no shelter in the Vale. Alongside this message, feelers should be sent to determine if he can be captured as well as the general mood towards the war. Catelyn and Edmure should contact their sister to attempt to gain some form of support in the war as a sibling. However, this is just as much an attempt to gauge Lysa's mood and preferences as it is a genuine call for support.
-[X] Marriages and inheritance:
--[X] Ask Lady Whent and Edmure to make Rickon heir to Harrenhal.
--[X] Arrange a marriage between Edmure and Alyssane Lefford with the second son getting the Golden Tooth.
--[X] Arrange a marriage between Bran and one of the Manderly daughters, who in turn will support the construction of a new, well-protected port along the Western shores of the North, potentially along a rivermouth of one of the rivers in the Rills or the Fever River. This will be partially funded with the money gained from the Lannister reparations and ransoming of Westerland nobility.
--[X] Hold off on betrothals for Robb, Sansa and Arya. See how the war develops before making decisions here.
-[X] Northern noble house initiatives and miscellaneous:
--[X] Encourage House Glover to experiment with ship construction at Deepwood Motte with ironwood from House Forrester (Their vassal) and have House Manderly send advisors.
--[X] Encourage Houses along the Western coast to support the construction of a new, fortified port in order to revitalize the region and protect against potential Ironborn aggression.
--[X] Encourage vassals to forge closer ties with the mountain clans. They are our brethren and in these times of trouble, we can't afford to be divided.
--[X] Have Arya and a search party look for her direwolf. We don't want Nymeria running around the Riverlands.
--[X] Seek out more of Robert's bastards and help them all have decent lives, whether that's as smiths in Winterfell or merchants growing rich off of the timber and fur trade.

That's a waste of resources, we have no navy to protect it and yet Ironborn will just burn it to the ground to destroy it.

We can't 'arrange' a marriage for Edmure. We can suggest.

That's what I meant. When I say 'arrange' I really mean 'Try to'. There's no guarantee either party will accept.

Robb continuing the campaign is fine if the Lannisters don't stop attacking (though I'm not sure about Oxcross). We need to keep the Riverlands safe. But what if they don't? What do we do then? We should clear out the Lannister stragglers in the Riverlands for sure, but beyond that I don't think we should go on the attack. No need to start further trouble with them when they'll have the Reach and maybe the Ironborn to deal with.

Robb will simply stay around Riverrun and direct troops around if he doesn't receive any relevant intelligence about enemy movements. If he receives intelligence that Lannister troops are amassing for the express purpose of attacking the Riverlands, Robb may perform a pre-emptive strike. It'll be a bit brash but IC, IMO. There likely won't be a Battle of Oxcross but Robb can still find the path around the Golden Tooth if the Leffords are uncooperative. I don't think we'll be attacking the West anytime soon if Kevan can keep Cersei and Joffrey in line.

If Ramsay Snow is in a cell in Winterfell, is there anything we need to do to make sure he stays there/gets dead ASAP?

I don't think so. Ned and Robb have little to no IC knowledge of him at this point. They probably don't care.

-Could you add a note about picking up any of Robert's children we know about?

Sure. I'll edit it in.

What of the Ironborn?

Ned and Robb probably aren't thinking about any threat from them. We still have Theon after all. The Ironborn are more likely to go after the Westerlands in my opinion but if they still attack, we should be more prepared than canon. I considered suggesting marriages between Robb and Asha, and Sansa and Theon as a gag plan but decided against it lol. The Ironborn are pretty unpredictable here but we can always count on them to be complete dicks.

We need to build a port in order to build a navy and supply it. We can't just build a navy in White Harbor and send it all the way around Westeros. Also, it's perfectly possible to protect a port without a navy, whether done with chains across rivers or with guard towers brimming with archers, ballistae and catapults.

We can build a port once someone else smacks down the ironborn. The fact is we will be very vulnerable to their raids and even if we do build he Port it will take too long to build a fleet capable of throwing back the Ironborn, especially with the Iron Fleet.

It is a good investment for when the seas are safe, but now we can't really do anything aside from give them a juicy traget

Didn't Ned already declare for Stannis? Other than that looks great. Right now I'm thinking either this or KoW's.

Though making notes for looking for Robert's known bastards within our sphere of influence and making sure they're okay wouldn't hurt.

I really like your plan and might switch over to it but this part confused me. You know I meant the northern clans like Wull, Liddle, Harclay, Norrey, and Flint, right? I don't think Ned would have to go personally to get some support. I definitely wasn't suggesting that we approach the Vale clans.

I probably should be more clear in my own plan.

I fail to see how a well-fortified port is a "juicy target" or "very vulnerable". It's not like there'll be any riches from commerce like at Lannisport, at least not initially. It'll also be intended as a military port first, merchantile port second with a strict focus on protection against specifically ironborn raids.
While the construction of such a port might be a long-term project, it's something that needs to start sooner or later and I'd really like to get it done, at least partially, before Winter hits. That way, we can more easily get supplies from the Reach, especially food.

You're right, changed it to "further announcements" and added how "Stannis might be the rightful heir to Robert but none of them have yet proven worthy of our loyalty or support."

Well, I'm not sure where they should go. Winterfell? Give them some money and let them decide on their own?

Yes, it's the northern mountain clans aka. the mountain clans aka. the hill clans. GRRM isn't exactly consistent in his terminology. Added clarification. I want to send Ned since the clans crave recognition and would appreciate a visit from their nominal liege lorg instead of some messenger. Basically, we can get more from them if we go in person.

[X] Plan Turtle

I like this plan the most, I think. A note about any of Robert's bastards we find would be nice, though.

Beyond that...I think it could use sending someone to Dorne with Gregor's head as part of an olive branch and getting some feelers there.

We're turtling up for now. But if the south does become a problem I'd prefer to have some idea of what every possible faction is thinking.

[X] Plan Turtle

This has pretty much everything I wanted and is more detailed. Going for this one.
