Subverting tropes is fun :p. Besides, for what it's worth, as far as Superpower Lotteries go Mariko hit the jackpot.

Oh, did she now? I can see how damage reflection is powerful, but... ah, there is probably something we do not know yet, or something she can make out of her abilities once she learned to control them.

Now that I think about it, Mariko might actually be capable of landing damage on Cathy... phrased like that, most Magical Girls that met Cathy would probably be afraid of Mariko per default. ("What kind of monster does it take to hurt her?!")

I just had another idea in terms of Mariko.

Thinking back a few weeks, her pain-mirror does not just mirror pain.
Screw that noise, you say! No friend of yours is ever going to get stuck like that! Now, you just need to-

The air around Mariko starts shimmering, and her gaze snaps to the side, suddenly filled with pure panic. "N-no-"

You barely manage to realize that her powers still worked even while untransformed before the magic hits you.

You let out a short-lived, but piercingly loud scream as your hands suddenly burn, with the skin being boiled and charred, especially around your palms. You manage to bite down your tongue quickly to stop the noise, but by then it's too late, as Mariko's expression turns into that of pure anguish and fear.
This is from "Social Sciences 17", where Tami started to break through Mariko's shell. We see that it is active even without Mariko transforming.

You can't help but to wince, both at the strained, pitiful voice and the state of her Gem, as well as her words. Yeah, the reflections seems to have done a number on them, with severe burns covering them in entirety. You can deal with the pain well enough, being a Magical Girl and all, but it's not exactly pleasant.

This is from "Social Sciences 19"; the reflection was pretty strong, considering Mariko only slightly burned her hands on a hot cup. On a guess, I would say it is at least ten to one.

You put away the half-filled grief seed and gently grab Mariko's hands. A brilliant white light covers your hands as you get to work, knitting the destroyed tissue back together. "B-but… No, I don't-" she tries protesting, but with you refusing to budge, she can't do anything without accidentally hurting you in the process.

[...]

Then the air begins to shimmer again. Though startled at first, your sense of alarm fades away in favor of curiosity as you watch your own hands begin to heal as well.

It's weird. Weird, but convenient.
And this, lastly, is from "Social Sciences 20"

The observations on the first two are mostly just for completion's sake.
What I wanted to point at is mostly the last part. Her magic does not only reflect pain, but healing magic as well.

This brings me to believe that Mariko's... let us call it "Master Ability"... is actually to boost effects and/or magic. If she actually learns to control it, she might become a force multiplier by herself.

I will write that down for the extended training session that is coming up, just in case.
Thoughts?

Interesting point, we should get Mariko alone for the training.

We should test and train her barrier/wall on phase shifting since its very useful.
For example she could setup an invisible healing screen in the middle of the battlefield so if Tamiko suffers damage she can retreat through and come out healed on the other side. Also Tamiko could use her damaged appearance as a way to surprise her opponent expecting an easy kill when going through the healing screen all healed up.

If we have to test her pain or heal effect then we could toss raw damaged chicken or pork back and forth as a way to check for the burning/cuts or healing which could repair the products or for any other unknown effects.
Also as a way for them to get use to the smell if we have to fight magical girls.
We need to check how fast her healing is since it would make our opponent suspicious at why Tami going back and forth on the same spot also Mariko is a pretty base area of effect healer if we hold the line near her.

Also invisible hard screen would be a great way to bash her opponent's heads or arms against the wall, depending how hard they're going it could dislocate their bones or weapons, same goes for tripping them over a invisible small screen in the middle of the battle.

Chapter 2 - Witch Battle: Liselotte 3
[X] This is a trap. It is definitely a trap
-[X] Run the following plan by your friends and only do it if they agree; it is somewhat risky
--[X] Instead of trying to defuse it, you want to spring it and have the Witch run into a counter-trap
--[X] Ask Kishi and Mariko if they have anything that can be placed on the ground and activated later (mines, bear traps, etc.)
--[X] Have Kishi dig in and prepare herself as well as she can
---[X] She should have the Howitzer ready at least
--[X] Mariko should keep an eye on the area behind Kishi, just in case something sneaks up on you
---[X] Otherwise, she should be ready to put up a barrier in front of you
--[X] You will stand at the front and prepare to use a 30 Force Bubble at a moment's notice
--[X] Once preparations are complete, you cut off the mobile with a 10 Energy Slash, then put another 10 Energy Slash into the music box; chain those together

'...Trap?' you suggest.

'Trap?' Mariko asks.

'T-trap,' Kishi says.

'Trap!' you determine with an assured nod and an accompanied grin to your friends. The witch isn't even particularly subtle about it, really. A part of you wonders if this is just a front for the actual trap you've yet to detect. But that's only a small part. The rest is busy coming up with a plan to deal with it.

'Say, guys, I think I may have an idea?' you slowly begin, throwing your gaze between your friends. 'It's a risky one, I think, but it would make this so much easier, should it succeed.'

'R-risky?'
Kishi asks you, sounding somewhat worried. 'Wh-what are you planning, Tamiko?'

'We spring the trap!'
you announce brightly, as if it was the most obvious thing. 'And then use that to lure the witch into a counter-trap of our own.'

'...I'm listening,'
Mariko allows after a moment of incredulousness, followed by Kishi nodding to you.

'Alright! First of all, do you have anything we can put on the ground? Mines, bear traps, anything that can be activated later?'

'Not really, nothing that would hurt at least,'
Mariko says, turning her gaze towards Kishi, who fidgets a little under the attention.

'N-no, I don't have anything,' she explains, sounding apologetic about it. 'I-I've found it easier to just attack myself… S-sorry.'

You shrug your shoulders. 'It's okay, the plan wasn't really dependant on that,' you explain. 'But what is more important, is that I'd like you to prepare your position. Maximum firepower out, Kishi! At least the howitzer! Mariko, watch Kishi's back and be ready to summon barriers.'

'A-and what will you do?'
Kishi asks. She seems like she's already expecting to hear something from you she'd prefer not to.

'I will be the trap,' you explain. 'I will get closer to the witch once you're ready, and slash at the mobile and the music box. The witch will probably do something then, and I will keep a Force Bubble ready for that, while you shoot at it with everything you've got. Be ready to put up some barriers, though, Mariko, you never know what will come.'

'That should work,'
Mariko notes, twirling her mace as she thinks. 'Or at least I can't think of anything better. Shall we get to work?'

Kishi nods with visible reluctance, willing to go with the plan despite not appearing to like it too much.

With that, you begin to set up. It doesn't take too long, but in a dangerous environment like this you have to keep an eye out for dangers as you prepare. Kishi has set up her howitzer atop a sturdy-looking toy carousel a few dozen meters away from the clearing, with Mariko right next to her.

You're situated before the clearing. Time to go. You take in a deep breath, and grasp your sword.

Energy flows into the sabre, and you draw it, sending the first part of the energy slash towards the music box. Then, without a second's delay, you bring it to the opposite direction to unleash the second slash in the chain.

Your attacks hit.

The music box explodes into splinters of decaying wood, paint and shards of metal, the discordant melody pulling to an abrupt halt. The mobile falls down on the bed, from where it bounces on the cluttered floor.

For a moment, all is silent, sans the flickering of the projectors. The shadows have stopped their dance across the room.

Then a piercing shriek starts echoing through the room, increasing in volume as it goes on. From the shaking bed arises an enormous, skeletal arm that flails in the air, helpless. The shadows bring into action, dancing frantically around and on it.

[Kishi attacks: 76 vs 11]
The crib explodes into an inferno of fire and debris as Kishi shoots her howitzer. The attack is a direct hit that leaves little in its wake.

Once the dust settles, on the floor lies a half of a deformed human skeleton. Only the vaguely beast-like skull, together with the upper parts of the ribcage and inhumanely long right arm are left and intact, and it looks at you with its empty eye socket. It's itching and its bones rattle weakly. It vails and cries, a shriek that pierces your ears.

Your stomach wells and a shiver runs down your spine at the way those sound like the cries of a human baby.

Below it, the remains of the floor and the crib start sinking into the shadows like those of the shapes around you, but without discernible shape. Just darkness that you cannot see through, like a black hole in the ground that pulsates and shakes.

[Counter-attack: 39 vs 126]
The skeleton moves, picking up a long piece of wood left from the mobile, and throws it at you. You have unleashed your force bubble before the improvised javelin is even half-way towards you, and the shield throws the projectile off course without any difficulty. You don't even need to move from where you're standing

The barrier around you seems to start diminish and fade... This one doesn't seem to have been made of tough stuff.

Tamiko Shield Charge: 30/100

What do you do?

[] Finish that creepy, giant, skeleton baby!

[] Hug the creepy, giant, skeleton baby!

[] Write-in.

Well, ambush successful?

[X] Hug the creepy, giant, skeleton baby!
If there's ever a witch that Tamiko would hug, it's a crying, helpless baby.

I just had another idea in terms of Mariko.

Thinking back a few weeks, her pain-mirror does not just mirror pain.
Here's a pretty big one you may or may not have missed.
Chapter 2 - Supper good times 4

You frown when you notice the closed eyelids and the faint beginning of a smile. Did she just... fall asleep on your arms? She did look pretty tired with the bags under her eyes when you met her here, but it really shouldn't be that bad. It shouldn't be that-

And then it hits right back as you.
It's okay...
An all-encompassing and soothing feeling of warmth spreads all over your body from your head to toes. Your eyes widen briefly from the sudden sensation before your increasingly heavy eyelids start fluttering under the emerging feeling of fatigue.
...I know it hurts...
You wish you could stay like this for a long time to bask in the sensation. The comforting sense of solace seems to have filled your entire body down to the weary bones. It is a difficult feeling to describe, but there seems to be more to the warmth than just simple temperature.
...But it will get better...
It's closer to the feeling of being lovingly caressed by someone when you come home, feeling down from being beaten down by life. They would tell you that it will all be okay and that you would be safe there, they won't leave your side, they would care no matter what happens. Then they would guide you to a hot bath and serve warm soup for dinner.
...I promise...
You tighten your hug and close your eyes as something wet falls down your cheek. You bask in the feeling of solace, unwilling to let go just yet. It is better to stay that way…
I've assumed for a while that her wish may have been something along the lines of "I wish that others could know what I feel." Mariko never seemed as though she really let people get to know her, even those she may have called her friends prior to meeting us, she was incredibly bottled up about it all.

This one also serves as a bit as an understanding into what our power is as well, we wished that we could mean something to others. And what's most important to broken people? A port in the storm where they can finally recover after everything that's happened to them, yes that's somewhat influenced by the way we've voted but it's also influenced how the more immaterial aspects of our power work in affecting others.

I'd say it's worth looking into, something we should want to try is to see if she can affect multiple targets at once as well, Like if she gets hit by a familiar can she then shove it back into all of their faces?

Not the "hug the witch option" again.

While I don't disagree with the vote, I feel we're over relying on the energy slashes. I think we should be improving our melee game when we have the opportunity to do so.

I think part of it is that we haven't been forced into a melee in quite a while, not even during the maze witch from recently with the extremely close quarters. Not that I disagree of course, we should still train up our melee but it's that we haven't had much of a chance to use it.

We're not pulling a Mami here: The barrier is dissolving, meaning any action the witch takes would be at its weakest. There's also the distinct possibility that the Witch can't do any further actions at all due to the damage its taken. Its actions consisted solely of throwing things. No energy attack, no melee bullshit, no physics-sundering nonsense, just something a two-year old would do. If this weak, beaten, scrub-tier witch is not safe enough to try and experiment on, then what the hell is?

Additionally, this keeps getting offered for a reason. We already know Tamiko's hugs can remove grief, and there's clearly some sort of ability that can only be done on beaten witches. Maybe it's turning them human again, maybe it's turning them into loyal allies like Shadow of Mordor, maybe it makes the Grief capacity greater, there's something going on there.

I think it keeps getting offered because it's only a matter of time before people go "oh why not?" and choose it.

I really wish we had hugged Zinnia...

In any case I say we save the hug another witch, there really wasn't much to this one.

That's a reason to keep notes in case the write-in wins, not put it as an option for all this time.

And if folks were actually up to hugging more powerful after they are beaten and dying, in contrast to how all previous witch hug votes have gone, I'd be down for that.

First off, I love that part.
Secondly, the ambush worked out.

Ah, yes. I do know about that one, but my mind was focussed on the other situation at the time.

I think it keeps getting offered because it's only a matter of time before people go "oh why not?" and choose it.

Hm... I concur with you, but I have been thinking about this in another way.
Let us assume something bad happens if we hug the Witch. If this "bad" is really in an order of magnitude where we have to be overly worried, we will probably have a Bad End and can restart at this mark again. So... there might be a risk, but we will either have minor setbacks, or none at all due to reloading.

So... maybe we should try to find out if this does anything, just to be able to say "No, this does [Insert Bad Consequence Here]" when it is brought up again; if there even are consequences, that is.

With that said... I propose:

[] Telepathy: "I want to do something... and it's probably not a good idea. Cover me?"
[] Hug the creepy, giant, skeleton baby!

That should give us at least a Modicum of safety.

As for the people that want to throw Energy Slashes all around... I think this would be a waste. Maybe more like
[] Finish that creepy, giant, skeleton baby!
-[] Use the rest of your charge in two slashes, but only if it tries anything else

Huh, I was just thinking: in case Tami has Charge left after the barrier faded, that could be used on Matter Creation; it would have no other purpose and be wasted otherwise either way. We could just ask Kishi if there is any material she has far too little of and make more of it.

Firstly, kill the Witch.
Next double tap it to ensure it's dead.
Then hug your friends, because you all did good.
And only then you may indulge your desire and hug the Witch.
"Who's the cute little Grief Seed? You are, yes, you are!"
