Idea for trial by combat - OOC we were already planning to have Robb execute the Mountain. Do that before Robb receives word from KL.

If Cersei picks Jaime, then we allow it. He's down his sword hand, and we don't tell them that - we arrive with Jaime in tow...

If Cersei picks the Mountain, we let her know he's dead and offer to bring Jaime and release him for the trial if she wishes to choose him.

My original idea was a write in involving Ned breaking out into song and seeing if people would be distracted enough by a impromptu dance party to slip free. This sounds better.

Joffrey's weak point is his ego. He wants to show he's in control of the situation - that's why he killed Ned, to show his mother and Sansa no one can control him. We say he'll do it, he might change his mind just to spite us. Furthermore, for the moment we appear a bit insane, and killing someone insane isn't interesting. Keeping them alive and making fools of them is far more fun (see Ser Dontos). And if we're alive when Kevan gets here, we probably manage to survive.

On the other side, if Joffrey does kill us nevertheless, we'll grt hailed as a posthumous prophet, demoralizing the Lannisters and possibly boosting Stark sympathy and popularity

It's metagaming, but having Ned be executed for confessed treason right before news arrives that Robb has basically destroyed the Lannister's army and taken them hostage is just playing into Cersei's hands politically. I mean she'll be an emotional wreck immediately, but it won't be hard to spin us as the villians in the story.

Probably has a better chance of survival than telling simply telling the truth, which is currently in the lead. It'll probably result in Ned fighting the Hound, so I don't know how much better our chance of survival actually is.
 
Is it possible for Joffrey to refuse Eddard the right of choosing a champion? Seems exactly like something he'd do.

After all, nobody said the trial by combat has to happen where the general masses get to see it.

If someone in the crowd is a good enough fighter and guy to fight in our stead, Ned won't need to fight himself. That'll probably be up to the Dice Gods, though...

My reasoning is that I don't much care for Sansa as a character, so OOC I'm not particularly bothered by putting her at risk. But I would very much like to keep Eddard Stark (a much more interesting character) alive. We know how "confessing" is going to work out. Thus I choose the option that has a chance, no matter how small, of not ending with Ned's death.

IC Ned Stark is not a stupid man. Varys was able to manipulate him through his love for his family, but Ned was feverish and likely not in the best state of mind for thinking analytically. Let's just assume that he was slightly less feverish here, and came to the conclusion that executing Sansa is not politically viable for the Lannisters.


Also, can you imagine how people in King's Landing are going to react when Ned Stark demands "trial by combat", and not a week later news arrive of how a Northern army utterly wrecked the forces of the Westerlands? It's going to look like a pretty obvious thing whose side the gods are on.
