[x] Gather your supplies, say goodbye to Morgan, and break the anchor early.
-[x] Let him watch.
[x] Ask Morgan if you can take a training orb with you.

I prefer inscription over chanting because carrying around written spells is cooler than chanting them. Though obviously we're going to want to learn both eventually.

As for leaving early, it seems like the ability to dodge a horrible situation is worth more than a little bit more time in safety? At least in my book. This training is so basic that more of it isn't going to save our life or anything.

I hope that's an error?
Otherwise a certain president is getting set on fire by irate elementals

I don't get the joke. To me it just sounds like a Lewd comment with no greater relevance, because I haven't heard about any particular current president saying or doing anything lewd to an underage girl.

Maybe it isn't Lewd and my mind just goes there, but I still can't figure out the joke.

Not to anyone underaged (that we know of), but it's somewhat similar to some comments made by the current US president.

Could I have a vote ta—oh, right, I'll only need to ask for Preference votes these days. Thank you based @Firnagzen! :D

(OTOH, only 5 people have voted so far ._.)

  • [X] Switch to focusing on something else. You'd like to prolong your stay here for as long as possible.
-[X] Accurate dictation. Apparently, getting even a single word wrong in a chant can give you explosively unstable results.
[X] Ask Morgan if you can take a training orb with you.
[x] Gather your supplies, say goodbye to Morgan, and break the anchor early.
    -[x] Let him watch.
[X] Test if you are healed by traveling. Make a small cut on the back of your hand, get it bandaged and then when the time comes Travel and check the wound.
-[X] Precise inscription. You'll need it if you're going to be using any solid spell designs.

So the question is: What would our time with Morgan best be spent on? The problem is, we don't know what the training methods are.
  • Dictation could be anything from "Sit and speechify while Morgan critiques your pronunciation", requiring an expert, to "Do tongue twisters", requiring nothing but a bunch of tongue twisters written down on a sheet of paper.
  • Inscription could, again, be anything from "Make this shape and I'll verify it with detect magic" to "Use this simple tool to see if you've got it right" to "Use this building-sized scanner to see if you've got it right" to "Try casting spells with Morgan there to save you when you accidentally try to tear reality a new asshole".
  • Mana control could be either something we can trivially do later (if we get to take the practice orb(s) with us) or something that we can only do here (if we can't take the orbs with us).
We don't know any of these, so we can't decide what our time would best be spent on. So I'm not sure what to vote for here, or if we even should. Mystery box is mystery box:
You even think you might get something out of an early break—more options? Better options? Both? Something else? The voice in your head isn't being very helpful on that front.

Mystery box is mystery box:
It's not a mystery box. It's made very clear that leaving early improves our chances in SOME way.

And since we aren't going to be doing anything useful in the short term with the training even if it is difficult to obtain, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't ask Morgan if an extra day or so for him to scrounge up goodies will net us some better supplies and decide based on that, because that's what's really going to save our life compared to leaving early and getting whatever benefit that gives.

I call it a mystery box because of opportunity costs and the uncertain value of the reward. If we're coming back here in a week and we'll be able to pick up where we left off, then staying for an extra day for training is barely at all valuable unless it gains us the ability to actually cast a useful spell. If we're not coming back, either because we're not on a cycle or because we're going to get thrown into another part of this world, then staying here for even a tiny amount of formal training could be unbelievably valuable. If the mystery box's reward is particularly limited in scope, like, we land in a tree with edible fruit instead of a tree without edible fruit, then it could be outweighed by staying here to gather supplies. If it's a long-term benefit like "we fall into the good guys' camp instead of the bad guys' camp" that changes the entire color of our future interactions with a dimension, then there's very little we could do here that'd be as valuable as opening the mystery box.

Time-saver: you're pretty sure you could self-assess without any problems and Morgan agrees.

Inscription could, again, be anything from "Make this shape and I'll verify it with detect magic" to "Use this simple tool to see if you've got it right" to "Use this building-sized scanner to see if you've got it right" to "Try casting spells with Morgan there to save you when you accidentally try to tear reality a new asshole".

Time-saver: you'd be given a design to copy and/or trace and the tools needed to do so. Once you're done, you'd lay your own version over the original, compare the differences, and repeat as necessary.

Mana control could be either something we can trivially do later (if we get to take the practice orb(s) with us) or something that we can only do here (if we can't take the orbs with us).

Time-saver: you can do this phase trivially on your own.

A tiny amount of formal training is DEFINITELY not going to save our life within the next 24 hours. I'm not saying it's not useful, but it's irrelevant as far as saving our life for the next week or so goes.

[x] Ask Morgan if you can take a training orb with you.
[x] Gather your supplies, say goodbye to Morgan, and break the anchor early.
-[x] Explain the reasoning - you have a feeling that there's something Going On, and unless he can gather some significant extra supplies in the next 24 hours you're better off following your apparent new instincts.
--[x] If you get the chance, you'll definitely repay him.
-[x] Let him watch.

Ah, useful. In that case, I think that I'm very on board with mystery box.

I wonder if it might be worth seeing if anyone wants to come with us? Two of our elementals made it through the first time, and if the portal stays open longer it's conceivable that we could have someone go through first...

Hrrrm. Maybe next time? I figure that Morgan's going to realize the implications of our elementals going with us and be kitted up and ready to go by the time we make it back.

By the time we come back, we'll need the help significantly less. It would be better if we could get someone who is okay with what could easily be a one-way trip with an extremely high chance of death right now.
