The new information about Haunted not being an accidental thing made me like it a lot more. It has the best opportunities for social and a wacky superhero team, it has nifty interactions with the death-world magical wildlife we're going to be encountering on a regular basis, I bet that dimensional travel means we'll be running through the wildnerness a bunch, etc. I hope that that one comes out ahead.

So, it looks like Conjurer wins. EDIT: It was close enough that you'll get a better affinity for it, though. Either way, next post will be up soon.

People were afraid of the potential infamy for necromancy with haunted and the ugliness of imperfection (can't remember reading a quest that doesn't idealize a girl protagonist's appearance). Disappointing but it's the point of preference voting to make the option which has the least amount of people disliking it win and not the one that the most people really prefer.

I don't really think it's fair of you to generalize people's reasoning that way. I, for one, wouldn't care about the social maluses of Imperfect at all if it were easier to control the ability. As it stands, though, we get a tricky-to-use power with nebulous effects, which also has the downside of slowing our mana recharge rate. Its benefits are entirely dependent on the environments we go to, which may not always be under our control, and we don't even know what mutations we can get (in general or from specific places) without actually triggering the process of getting them. In addition, keeping a mutation requires us to stay in an area and aborting a mutation requires us to travel away from it, which won't always be under our control either. (I don't expect this to come up, but to illustrate an example: What will we do if we have to take a months-long sea voyage and start growing flippers in the middle of it?)

In comparison, Conjurer is a lot more flexible and useful, Haunted has tons of social potential, Healer helps keep ourselves (and anyone we like) alive along with some musclewizard applications, and Scout lets us sense potential plot hooks/dangers. Pretty much the only one I like less is Shaper, which just sounds overall boring to me compared to the other powers.

Prologue/Chargen, Part II of III
Winner: Conjurer.
Close Runner-up: Haunted. Bonus: Moderately Improved Necromantic Affinity.

Character sheet updated.

...And how old are you? (Use Preference (1, 2, 3, 4) Voting. The differences in starting mana storage and regen are minor.)

[] 14

+ You're pretty sure you're only a tiny bit behind most of the other people your age in terms of knowledge.
+ For whatever reason, many people seem to be less prickly when you're asking them questions.
+ You've found others to be more willing to forgive your misbehavior than they used to be.

± People still think of you as a kid no matter how often you object.
± You can't safely absorb as much environmental mana as you'll be able to when you're a few years older, but you can do a little more with the same amount.

− You are mature! Honest!
− Many other kids your own age are morons.
− You've been told other people your age are going to start to be unusually distracting soonish. Some of the other villagers even seemed surprised it hadn't happened yet.
− If you're wandering around on your own, people tend to wonder what you're up to. It's plain out unfair. Even though they're usually right.
± Others.

[] 16

+ You're reaching your peak in terms of the amount of mana you can safely absorb at once, yet you still get more out of a given amount than those a few years older than you.
+ Other people your age seem unusually willing to do nice things for you and give you minor gifts.
+ As long as you look like you know what you're doing and don't draw too much attention to yourself, you can often go out on your own without anyone questioning you.

± Some people think you should be old enough to handle yourself, others still treat you like a child.

− You're pretty sure you'll be a bit behind in your education. You're sure you can catch up if you try hard enough.
− Many other people your age are moronic idiots.
− You keep having inappropriate and distracting daydreams about other people.
± Others.

[] 18

+ Some people may still mistake you for a kid, but you are a legal adult now and can go out on your own.
+ You know how to take care of yourself in forested wilderness. Monster-infested or otherwise high-mana areas don't count.

± You're expected to be able to take care of yourself by now.
± Several different people have given you what are undeniably supposed to be courting gifts. Letting them down gently was just so awkward.
± You've reached what's likely to be your upper lifetime mana tolerance. Unfortunately, the amount of permanent storage and regen you can get from a given amount of mana is starting to slide downward.

− You think you're past the point where you can reasonably catch up to others your age.
BEGONE, IMPURE THOUGHTS!
± Others.

[] 21

+ Nobody will bat an eye if you're running around on your own.
+ Few people will give you the stink-eye if they see you drinking alcohol.
+ You're mostly past the point where you're, er, paying excessive attention to attractive members of the same race. Either way, you've learned how to deal with it and have gotten past your first "crush."
+ You know how to take care of yourself in wild mountains, forests, plains, and swamps. Monster-infested or otherwise high-mana areas don't count.

± You've hit what's likely to be your lifetime limit for the amount of mana you can safely absorb at once. Unfortunately, your regeneration and storage don't increase as much as they used to.
± You're expected to be able to take care of yourself by now.

− People are much less forgiving of your mistakes and perceived misbehavior compared to how they used to be.
− Your lack of a proper education will be especially noticeable to those who care; you're pretty sure people are supposed to be graduating by the time they're your age, not starting.
± Others.

Just this once, I'd like to play a character who's actually of age.

...Hrm. I'd say definitely not 21 as it hurts our magic ability. I like the younger ages for being easier to catch up on education, but being treated as a kid is a big downside. 16 or 18 seem like the best options.

This is an academy apparently so basically we start grade 7 has 18 years old, not literary

According to those negatives.

I can handle everyone treating like a kid. That's relatively easy to deal with once we start accumulating some serious power.

I really don't want to be full-adult. Not just the mismatch between our knowledge and the character's knowledge, we're going to need some room to screw up. And why would we want to go drinking? Magic and booze mix about as well as explosives and booze. Especially since magic in this setting seems to be radioactive.

Past that, I'd slightly prefer younger over older, mostly because BEGONE IMPURE THOUGHTS would get annoying rather quickly. Inconvenient crushes are fine, but I'd rather not have to fight off courtiers constantly. Especially since this civilization appears to be pretty medieval.

No opinion on the names yet.

I for one would like to avoid romance for a long while and being underestimated is good. Having a large gap in our education will also suck if an event occurs where we should have learned a subject already. Being a child will limit what we can do because adults will get in our way, but that's what sneaking and acting innocent is for.

I hate playing at a knowledge deficit, as such the 18 and 21 options don't appeal to me, also powerlevels not liking the age penalties there.

As much as I'd love to go for being an adult, I think 16 is just the right balance between magical talent and learning ability, as well as for distraction level.

Not crazy about the naming options, if I'm being honest.
