Dice Rolls:
Megumi: 16, 19, 18
Sora: 23, 17, 23
-Agree to the terms.
You take a deep breath, your goal here is what exactly? While you admit your pride wants you to win to be in charge...that's not actually what is important. What is important that this problem is solved in such a way as it stops being a problem. While an iaijutsu duel is traditional, you know that insisting that it be an iaijutsu duel would just make for bad feelings later on when you absolutely need to rely on each other.
With that you decide to agree to her proposal. You'll still do your best to win..but if you don't? You don't, the Heaven's will do as you will.
"Alright Bayushi-san, we shall play Shogi."
Sora doesn't smile, not that you can tell with that full body mask thing of hers on. However, you can tell she's happy with this decision. You outmanoeuvred her, but by giving her some ground, she feels mollified.
"Three games then?" She asks.
"Hai" You agree.
It's Izu surprisingly that has a Shogi board laying around for you to play on. When you ask him about it, he says something about taming the mind with a game of battle. You suspect that he means that it was something he did one of his paramours.
While Izu has changed since that day, you still feel mildly confused as to how a Monk has gotten more action than anyone you have ever met, even if he doesn't still.
The first game is a wash, you put your all into it, but Sora's trap was sprung to quickly for you to do much more than make her fight for it.
The second game however, when she tries a variant on the trap from before, you over come it by the narrowest of margins.
The third game, she comes back strong, shifting her style entirely into a brutal offense that shatters your forward line and leaves several tokin attacking your king. In the end you manage to take them all down with your own forces...but left yourself open to a single rook and a bishop.
So that's it the Heaven's have decided against you.
"Well played Bayushi-sama" You say, bowing to her.
"Well played yourself Megumi-san." She says, bowing back.
"Thank you Bayushi-sama." You say.
You didn't think it would hurt this much to lose, a blessed life as Sora had put it...well that was the way of things.
"I'm going to be relying on you Megumi-san, as my second" Sora says as if she hadn't just said something absurd.
"Of course, Bayushi-sama." you manage to get out.
Your mind flits about as it tries to figure out what Sora's doing. She had won, there was no reason for her to be magnanimous in victory. Yet, here she was, not only implicitly stating that she wouldn't have been too upset if she lost...but also putting you as equal with Yukiko...why? Sora had never particularly liked you. So...Kyoko, Sora was doing this to keep Kyoko on the team, obviously.
"In light of that, let's speak outside for a moment." Sora said
You nod and follow her out of the small apartment on to the porch. Compared to the room you were in, it's quite bright. How long were you at those games? Sora turns around.
"Thank you" Sora says simply.
"You are welcome Bayushi-sama" you say.
She's thanking you, and you know why, but it's not polite to acknowledge that until she does.
"You could have insisted that we duel with Iaijutsu, you did not. I thank you for that." Sora says explaining herself.
Ah the rules of the game, so familiar and so rigid.
You shrug slightly.
"You and Iuchi-sama would have been upset if I had, I judged it not worth it. If the Heavens wanted me to lead, they would have let me beat you."
Sora nods and does something very strange:
"You did well considering you had never played the game before."
A compliment...what sorcery is this?
"I had a lot of motivation." You say, playing along.
"Indeed, so did I. Will you be alright, talking to Isawa-san?" She asks.
Well you say ask, but you know Sora is all but ordering you to do it.
Although, you don't think you can help much given that Kyoko does not like the Scorpion at all.
"Hai, if that's what you want me to do." You say.
Sora's body language communicates her exasperation better than the dry tone she uses to say:
"A Second needs to divine the intent behind the order."
Well in for a zeni in for a koku.
"Then if Bayushi-sama permits?" You ask.
This is something of a decision point for you. If Sora deigns to listen to you, then she's serious about this second in command business...if not, then it's a sop to Kyoko, you'll still do your job, but you know which one would make you feel better about it.
"Very well." She says.
"Isawa-sama does not trust you, I do not know why beyond the lingering feelings of the war. If there is something more, which it seems like there must be. Then I will not succeed at the task." You say.
Sora tilts her head and turns to look out at the sky.
"Hmph. Already my appointment causes me head aches."
Not a dismissal, but not an acknowledgement, either. That full covering is really unfair when it comes to trying to read her. Which is probably the point admittedly.
"My apologies Bayushi-sama." You say.
Sora shakes her head.
"We are not doing the tournament, however, your original suggestion of building a team has merit. While we'll begin training with each other; I will take in a suggestion for some other group activity for the evenings. Do you have one?"
She changed the subject entirely, which you suspect means that Sora has decided to listen to you. Which bodes well, still if not kemari or full contact kemari, what could you do with the others? There are a few ideas coming to mind....
[] Suggest that you go to the theatre
[] Suggest you go out drinking
[] Suggest you attend some recitals
