Chapter 14: Cut and Run

Kenzō frowned minutely. "Stealing from the Daimyō herself? I dunno. Sneaking around a dark forest is one thing, sneaking around a guarded estate none of us know the full layout of is another…"

Shion, who was spinning a kunai around a finger absently, looked pensive. "Hmm. Maybe instead of sneaking in, we could disguise ourselves as peasants and rummage around when no one's looking? Maybe convince a group to go with us to see the Daimyō, could help hide us."

Shaking her head absently, Momoka spoke in a soft tone. "None of us possess the raw presence to capture a crowd like that. Nor will people be interested in risking their necks for dubious gain…"

"Could just rush in and grab it, no subtlety at all?" Kenzō suggested.

Shion raised an eyebrow. "Do we really want to piss off one of Iron's five major Samurai Clans in our first week or two here? Before our business is really concluded?"

Kenzō shrugged. "Just floating ideas."

Shion nodded and hummed to herself, before saying. "If we're blowing up subtlety, we could just make direct contact with the Ishida, get our fingers on the pulse so to speak."

"If we are willing to make contact with the Samurai, shouldn't we simply return to our previous idea of just buying a map from the merchants?" Momoka asked.

"I'm still not keen on the idea of revealing ourselves if we can help it, personally," Kenzō said. "We don't know enough about them or how we'll be received yet, and what we do know seems to indicate a negative reception."

"Buy the map in disguise?" Shion floated.

"Dubious," Momoka replied morosely. "The prices of those maps… well, it is within our available funds, but it may seem a bit odd for some lowly civilian we pretend to be to spend that kind of money, especially on a national map of all things. We don't have the resources to pose as a merchant, and getting them would probably mean stealing from one anyways…"

"So, the easiest option is likely doing the job as presented," Kenzō concluded, solemn.

Momoka nodded, looking down.

Shion looked between them and scoffed. "We're in this mess because Sensei was addicted to putting in overtime for people who dig in the mud all day. Since when did this team care about the easy option?"

Momoka gave her a curious look as a smile danced on Kenzō's lips.

They had done a few subtle sweeps of the bazaar, looking for an ideal target to nick a map from. They would strike soon, whenever Kenzō got an opening. He lurked a few paces away from a line of stalls, slowly counting small sums of money while prospective buyers moved back and forth to examine the merchandise.

Shion's ears pricked at the plucking of string instruments from a small street band performing nearby, tucked into a corner and surrounded by colorful streaming ribbons of cloth. Idly, she wondered about their team obtaining some instruments, wouldn't be bad cover in the future…

She snapped back to attention. Kenzō was subtly signaling to her to distract the nearest Samurai to his position. She steeled her will. Whatever happened, fear wouldn't hold her back. (Or embarrassment.)

At an intersection of cobbled road, a young Ishida Samurai stood attent, holding a poleaxe. Shion readied her most demure self. From what they'd observed, Iron civilians were still spooked by the power of the Samurai, but weren't quite as afraid to approach them the way Rain and Fire civilians seemed to cower at any interaction with a shinobi.

"Excuse me, your lordship, I seem to have misplaced my scarf…"

"You are welcome to search for it," he responded, not even looking at her.

She tucked her hair behind an ear as bashfully as she could manage. "O-of course, sir, I was just hoping-"

He continued ignoring her, his eyes snapping to attention elsewhere. "Hey, you there! What are you doing?" He stalked away, shoulder knocking her aside.

Uh oh.

Sorry, Kenzō, she thought ruefully. She just hoped her curse only applied to teachers, and not to teammates.

"Hey, you there! What are you doing?" An Ishida began moving his way after he'd nonchalantly and (what he'd thought was) discreetly shoved a map into his coat.

Kenzō's mind ran through possibilities they'd discussed, and settled on the most obvious one. Run for it!

Best to capitalize on a lead as quickly as possible. He immediately started pumping chakra, boosting his way through the crowd and weaving around confused shoppers and merchants at blistering speed.

The gray cobblestone clacked loudly under his feet as he blasted down the main street, trying to hide his profile in the colorful banners strung about all over the marketplace. Another Ishida Samurai came from his side and he ducked a poleaxe swing, crashing through the outdoor furniture of a small restaurant, diners leaping out of the way as two Samurai sprinted after him. He chanced a glance back and saw a third Samurai a few seconds behind the other two. Great.

Momoka and Shion would be following as subtly as they could manage, but would likely be too far away to get to him in time - before yet more Ishida caught up, anyways.

He continued running, before abruptly chakra-adhering to the ground below him and throwing himself to the side in a painful redirection of momentum. The Samurai scraped their poleaxes against the stone wall, slowing themselves down and hurling themselves around the corner. As Kenzō faced forward and pumped his arms to pick up speed again, he noted ironically that the poleaxe corner trick was a maneuver similar to one he often used with his hooked swords, which he greatly missed at the moment. He had a tanto tucked away if he really needed to fight, but hoped it wouldn't come to that.

Despite the unwieldiness of their long weaponry, the Samurai seemed to be gaining on him. It seemed they were well accustomed to maneuvering with them in the downtown area, though the environs were gradually opening up as they continued to run from the heart of the town.

The small buildings gave way to the outskirts of Hitachiwa, and trees began to crop up, thickening back into a frosty taiga. His eyes flicked back and forth for some Substitution targets to give himself a lead that would let him fully throw his pursuers in the woods, but while sprinting through the thick branches of the forest, he only spotted good Substitution targets when they were too close to be helpful.

He barely sidestepped another weapon swing and grimaced as their axe split the ground and sent fissures pulsing outward. What the hell? It seemed they'd avoided using anything especially fancy while in town but were no longer hesitating.

That settled it. He'd wanted not to reveal too much of his hand (and by extension, potentially his identity) like this, but it seemed necessary. Time to show them what a shinobi was capable of. Moving towards an open grove within the forest, Kenzō meticulously molded his chakra. "Wind Release: Vacuum Step." As he rocketed forward, the frost and snow beneath Kenzō's feet burst up into a diffuse cloud, spraying all over his pursuers.

"Wind Release: Vacuum Step. Wind Release: Vacuum Step. Wind Release: Vacuum Step. Wind Release…"

Ordinarily, the technique required a clear path to activate. Evidently, in the eyes of chakra, this counted. He ducked around and over trees and branches, flying into the forest at speeds the Samurai could not hope to match, his reserves steadily ticking down each time he used the technique.

Suddenly, after traveling nearly a mile in just moments, he stopped himself to listen for his pursuers, but heard nothing. He considered using Stolen Whispers, but decided to put the chakra into a few maximum-range Substitutions to break his trail, before he set to work, more completely obscuring where he'd gone.

With any luck, he could meet Shion and Momoka at their rendezvous in just a few hours.

"Gone, eh?" Lady Maita said, amused.

"Your ploy failed," the Ishida Captain spat.

She waved her hand dismissively. "Yes, yes, and apologies and all that. The robbed merchant will be compensated for his troubles, of course. Though, I take it that your grumpiness is moreso due to your men being taken off-guard despite knowing of multiple groups of shinobi present in town?"

Ishida merely growled in response.

"Thought so. If it's any consolation, I do not hold it against you. These are duplicitous types. It is to be expected."

"Hmph. I do not excuse it amongst my own men. Nor would my superiors, if I had done the same under their watch."

The Lady inclined her head. "Fair enough. You may hold your people to whatever standards you see fit."

"So, how do you intend to prove Sada Yoshiro has been hiring ninja now? I certainly won't tolerate using my men as bait as you attempted with those miscreants."

She shrugged. "I'm certain the opportunity will present itself."

Chopsticks gripped loosely in one hand, Shion slurped another mouthful of spicy noodles and once again felt a wave of gratefulness to not be eating wolf meat for the twentieth time. Momoka and Kenzō sat on stools to her right, quickly eating their own bowls. Having finally made it to Yamagakyō, Kenzō was insistent they eat 'food meant for people' before anything else. Shion was quick to agree.

Compared to the more rural Hitachiwa, Yamagakyō was heavily urbanized and industrialized, with plumes of smoke trailing into the sky all over the city from home furnaces, kitchens, and smiths alike. The city was largely composed of a uniform black stone with silver detailing, or the occasional splash of blue. The streets were much wider, and oxcarts could periodically be seen trucking goods and raw materials through the city streets.

There was a notably increased Samurai presence here, though with the size of the city, getting a concrete number would prove challenging. Shion also suspected that the quality of Samurai would be better in such an important city. Much as Kenzō might insist otherwise, the fact that he could outrun three Samurai chasing him down did not speak highly to their skill level in her estimation.

With a little under five thousand Ryō between the three of them, they'd be able to reserve basic accommodations for at least a few months, if necessary.

Somewhere in this city, the Iron Yakuza manifested a subtle but firm presence. Among their ranks was the info broker Tetsuya, who might be their best bet for furthering their goals, and for getting a grip on whatever cataclysm was shaking the continent at the moment.

Shion only hoped that, if meeting him was a mistake, it wouldn't be the last one they make.

You made it to Yamagakyō intact, congrats! Based on the events of this arc and the voter participation, the net XP accrued for this arc is 235 XP. This will be added to all three character sheets.

Currently, Shion has 2 FP remaining, Momoka has 3, and Kenzō has 1. These will be refreshed to 4 at the start of next chapter.

Vote time! What to do?

[X] Surveil the town and get an idea of who the major players are.
[X] Meet with Tetsuya immediately and haggle for information.
[X] Introduce yourself to the local Sakamoto Clan to look for work.

Write-ins are accepted.

Current FP Totals:
Kenzou: 2
Shion: 2
Momoka: 3

Momoka's disguise Deceit block for the group was 39 from prior rolls.

Kenzou is going to try and steal maps/intel/etc. from a merchant.

Momoka will help case the bazaar, trying to identify escape routes and hiding spots.
Momoka, Examination: 20 + 9 = 29
Exam TN: 25

Momoka discovers the Aspect "Nooks and Crannies" and gives the tag to Kenzou.

Shion will try and distract the nearby Samurai with a Rapport check.
Do they see through the disguise?
Momoka's Deceit block: 39
Ishida, Empathy: 20 + 0 = 20.
Disguise holds up.

Shion, Rapport: 24 - 3
Ishida, Presence: 20 + 6 = 26
Not worth a reroll just for a tag on Kenzou's roll. No dice (ba dum tss.).

Kenzou will need to snatch a map while no one is looking. There's not really a way to timeladder this without being even more suspicious so he will do the roll raw.

Kenzou, Stealth: 23 + 3 (tag "Nooks and Crannies" - 3 (bruh) = 23
Ishida, Alertness: 30 + 6 = 36

Uh oh.

Kenzou's just going to sprint for it. The Samurai who noticed him will chase him down. This is just an Ath contest. If he really needs to, he can use vacuum step but he will try to avoid revealing any additional info about himself.
Kenzou, Athletics: 40 + 5 (boost) + 0 (dice) = 45
Ishida 1, Athletics: 35 + 8 (boost) + 3 (dice) = 46
Ishida 2, Athletics: 35 + 8 (boost) + 6 (dice) = 49
Ishida 3, Athletics: 35 + 8 (boost) + 6 (dice) = 49

Well, that's not good.

Can he just Substitute to get ahead once he's out of town? The area is still a decently forested Taiga so deadfall etc. isn't out of the question, though trees can limit visibility just as much as they can provide Substitution targets. Kenzou's also not quite as used to this terrain as he is of Rain's more temperate forests, which might matter when spotting terrain advantages like Substitution targets.

We'll do a Substitution check with a TN of 20:
Kenzou, Substitution: 20 - 12 (lol) = 8
…okay then, no good targets, or at least none that will let him get far ahead of his pursuer.

Kenzou will have to show off Vacuum Step to get away from the Samurai, but once he does he is in the clear.

Kenzou barely slips out of town. Samurai may try to regroup and hunt him down, so he will try to break trail in order to meet back up with the other two. This will take around 10 minutes. He'll expand it to an hour, moving up the timeladder twice, not wanting to spend any more time in case they pursue immediately. Ironically, this is just canceled out by them also timeladdering their search.

Kenzou, Stealth: 23 + 6 (timeladder) - 3 (dice (bruh)) = 20
Reroll!
Kenzou, Stealth: 23 + 6 (timeladder) + 9 (dice) = 38

Ishida, Survival: 20 + 6 (timeladder) + 3 (dice) = 29

Kenzou's in the wind (bad dum tss).

Shiori has the idea to not only take out her political opponent Sada Yoshiro, but potentially to use this trio to draw out the shinobi she suspects work for him. She declines to tell these three the full truth as she doesn't trust them and thinks they might turn down the job if it entailed both killing Yoshiro and potentially risking their lives in the process.

Shiori, Deceit: 36 + 3 (dice) = 39
Momoka, Deceit: 21 + 0 (dice) = 21
Shion, Empathy: 23 + 9 (dice) = 31
valiant but futile

????, Deceit: 30 + 3 (dice) = 33
Shion, Empathy: 23 + 9 (dice) = 31
Shion is on FIRE but still barely doesn't make it. No one notices any other shinobi in town.

[ ] Training Plan (Momoka): The Fundamentals
1. Stealth 11->20 (144 XP).
2. Knowledge (Esoterica) 2->10 (26 XP). I don't have strong preferences here- Trapmaking, History, Fine Art, or Esoterica are all candidates. We just need a cheap 10 to act as pyramid support, and Crafts or Knowledges are our easiest options here.
3. Resolve 13->17 (70 XP). We probably won't be able to afford 20 immediately but we can get reasonably close since Momoka has 30 XP already banked.
She'll have 26 XP left. Pretty straightforward, builds up the lower tiers of the pyramid and shores up the fundamentals so dice swings can't hurt as much. This is focusing on the longer term, so:

[X] Training Plan (Momoka): Pointy End First
1. RW 40->45 (215 XP).
She'll have 50 XP left. Prioritizes offense in case we start running into chunin threats, since Momoka's barely squeaking by at the tier's minima. Better for short-term survival and that's not to be underestimated. I could maybe bump up Esoterica here but I don't really care that much about it.

[X] Training Plan (Kenzou): Straightforward Stuff
1. Alertness 38->39 (39 XP).
2. Stealth 23->30 (189 XP).
3. Undercover Operations (30 XP).
He'll have 35 XP left. Kenzou's build plan is uncomplicated. After this it's Presence up to 30 (another 189 XP) then Alertness 40 (40 XP) and Resolve 20 (105 XP). Once that's done, we're probably doing Chakra Reserves, X9s, and socials until we unlock new jutsu/research for Kenzou to mess with.

[ ] Training Plan (Shion): Fundamentals First
1. Chakra Reserves 26->30 (228 XP).
She'll have 46 XP left. This lets Shion level Water Whip or Alertness to 40 to pursue the MCT. Her other 20s are either Water jutsu that the Discord discussion considers lackluster, milestone skills that don't need to be prioritized to 30 this early like medicals or Physique, or Rapport. Rapport would be cheaper even going 24->30 since it's not doublecosted, but Shion's a jutsu spec and she needs her sweet, precious chakra. This is, however, focusing on the longer term, so:

[X] Training Plan (Shion): Don't Get Caught Yet
1. Stealth 13->20 (119 XP).
2. CR 26->28 (110 XP).
3. Undercover Operations (30 XP).
She'll have 15 XP left. A bit low for FP buys but she's getting refreshed back up to 4 so I'm open to discussion here. Shion doesn't have a whole lot to do with her build yet but we kinda need to not get caught right now. I'm willing to wait on 2 levels of CR to get Stealth up to 20.

[X] Surveil the town and get an idea of who the major players are.
[X] Find some civvies to help with miscellaneous tasks and work your way up to merchant class and then samurai. Healing (mostly do stuff that you can pretend isn't mednin, require unconsciousness if mednin is necessary, etc.), smithing, etc. Once established as friendly, approach local yakuza. Avoid making enemies with them.

Kinda want both of these.

[X] Training Plan (Shion): Don't Get Caught Yet
[X] Training Plan (Momoka): Pointy End First

Not sold on Kenzou's plan just yet but I'm musing on it anyway.

[ ] Training Plan (Momoka): Pointy End First

[X] Training Plan (Kenzou): Even More Stealth
Alertness 38->39 (39 XP)
Stealth 23->30 (189 XP)
Undercover Operations (30 XP)
Disarming Counter (25 XP)
10 XP remaining for 1 emergency FP buys. Undercover Ops is the equivalent of 4 stealth levels, seems better right now than saving up for another 3 FP buys right now. Added the new stunt, per WoG it can trigger on each melee attack against Kenzo. It's very, very good, worth going down to 1 emergency FP buy.

[X] Training Plan (Shion): Alertness and Stealth
Alertness 38 -> 39 (39 XP)
Stealth 13 -> 20 (119 XP)
Chakra Reserves 26 -> 27 (54 XP)
Substitution 18 -> 19 (19 XP)
Resolve 13 -> 15 (29 XP)
Undercover Operations (30 XP)
38 XP remaining for 3 emergency FP buys. Undercover Ops is the equivalent of 3 stealth levels, so it seems efficient to buy it over another 10 CP right now. Working up to Resolve 20, higher priority than even more chakra right now as Shion can't actually spam WDB yet.

I'd prefer something more like:

[X] Training Plan (Momoka): Stealth Focus
1. Stealth 11->20 (144 XP).
2. Undercover Operations (30 XP)
3. RW -> 41 (41 XP)
Save 50 XP for FP buys

[X] Training Plan (Shion): Alertness and Stealth
[X] Training Plan (Kenzou): Even More Stealth

Not sold on Kenzou's plan just yet but I'm musing on it anyway.
That's fair. To expand on my thoughts, Kenzou is a pretty basic build. He doesn't have any really good jutsu that we'd currently get a lot of benefit from being leveled much further- Gale Edge is probably staying at 30 for a while since AB 4 is sufficient for our purposes, the utility jutsu don't need high levels, etc, so that leaves other skills. He doesn't have any elements he can learn or research skills he can get tutored atm so the main things are chunin MCT, X9s on the higher MCT skills, and Chakra Reserves.

35 XP remaining for 3 emergency FP buys. Undercover Ops is the equivalent of 4 stealth levels, seems better right now than saving up for another 3 FP buys right now.
Agreed. I'd overlooked that stunt and I like it enough that I'm editing my plan to include it, nice find.

I'd prefer something more like:
Honestly not sure I value UO on Momoka over more RW right now but I'm thinking about it.

[X] Training Plan (Momoka): Stealth Focus
[X] Training Plan (Shion): Alertness and Stealth
[X] Training Plan (Kenzou): Even More Stealth

Heck yeah, love me some stealth.

Fun chapter! I liked reading the trio discussing the various plans, the characterization in their reactions and thoughts. Man, I knew we couldn't trust that Daimyo! :p Hidden Shinobi they can't sense is a scary prospect. Good signal for the potential to work with groups here though. Hopefully it's not a village affiliated shinobi, Rain in particular...

The characters get extra XP for votes, right. Is that true for training plan votes as well as regular action plan votes?

[X] Surveil the town and get an idea of who the major players are.
[X] Find some civvies to help with miscellaneous tasks and work your way up to merchant class and then samurai. I like the idea of working our way up! This Daimyo business felt like we got presented a situation at a higher level than we can comfortably handle. Though, the trio did totally kill a Jounin in the very start of the campaign so perhaps I'm underestimating their abilities :grin:

Is voting in the same manner as Cariyaga sufficient to support the proposal, or does it need to be rolled up into a single action plan?

I just run a tally from beginning to end of arc and see how many unique voters there were

Voting for both is fine, putting it in a plan gives a bit more control over how it is implemented

[X] Stunt Creation (Kenzo): Monkey See, Monkey Do
Kenzo recently saw a few samurai chase a totally innocent ninja through though a town. They were able to use their weapons to pivot and boost their movement to nearly catch up to this ninja. This seems like something that could come in handy for a particular weapon wielding man.

Cost: 30 XP
Reqs: 40 MW, 40 ATH

Adds +MW AB to ATH rolls while wielding a melee weapon hook sword.

[X] Stunt Creation (Shion): Hardcore Parkour
See if you can use your bodily strength to overcome environmental obstacles.
Suggested Mechanics: Ignore Physique AB Borders when taking the Supplemental Sprint action across zones. (Or, alternatively, +Physique AB to Athletics when rolling against a Border TN?)

[x] Stunt Creation (Momoka): Yeet v Kobe, Kunai Edition
See if you can use precise chakra repulsion from your fingertips to boost your ranged weapon attacks
Suggested Mechanics: +Chakra AB to RW, at the cost of some minor amount of chakra, stacks with Boost

[X] Action Plan: Friends in Low Places
  • Surveil the town and get an idea of who the major players are.
  • Get jobs posing as civvies, smithing/healing/tanning(?).
  • Approach local low-level yakuza, attempt to befriend them, and help them out so they can vouch for you to their boss.

Just some initial thoughts on some proposed stunts

Interesting flavor, probably would not grant this as a blanket "applies to all MW" though. More likely you would need to buy it on a weapon-to-weapon basis. Pole-vaulting with a spear isn't going to be the same as hooking with an axe or stabbing knives into the dirt to swing around, etc.

First suggestion is way too strong, most borders are only ever going to be 2 or 3 at most unless it's a powerful barrier technique and even then you'd be like halving the needed Ath roll to escape them. The latter is more acceptable, but I'm leery of approving it since everyone buys Physique and by extension virtually everyone would presumably buy this stunt at some point.

Definitely interesting, though I'm unsure of how you would actually throw like this with your fingertips somehow being on the butt of the weapon? Whether you're spinning the knife or straightlining it, you don't really grip the butt of the knife like that and my intuition is holding it like this would make your throw weaker rather than stronger.

Not quite what was originally suggested, but it would be interesting to hide weapons in your clothes and launch them mostly with chakra repulsion so it doesn't look like you threw them at all...

Maybe it's less "pulse from your fingertips" and more a controlled wave-like pulse of chakra from your curled hand (similar to the sequentially-squeezing finger motions used when milking a cow) to the handle of the kunai that adds more oomph to the throw? Sort of like a bar of soap slipping out of your hand?

Am I explaining this well enough?

I don't know that you can make shapes like that with basic repulsion, I think it's basically just a direct perpendicular outward force from contact with the surface of the hand... at best this could apply some sort of spin but conventional kunai aren't really shaped to benefit from this. Better start throwing footballs

It wouldn't have to be a complete shape made through a uniform expression of chakra throughout the entire hand, just a smaller emission of chakra from a single point on the hand, that then travels up the palm. You don't need to keep your entire hand/foot in constant contact with a surface to adhere/repulse it, it's more flexible than that. This is, I think, akin to water walking on your tiptoes, and then switching to your heels. You're just moving the point of repulsion from a specific point on your palm to a different point of your palm, and timing it with your throw in such a way that the kunai receives a helping push from the chakra pulse.

EDIT: like holding a bar of soap that slips through your fingers as you try and grip it. The Kunai is the soap, and the slipperiness comes from the chakra repulsion. You flex your chakra repulsion in such a way that the kunai is pushed out of your hands, and then you time that with your throw so that the throw receives a minor benefit from the "slippery push" of the chakra repulsion. If that sentence makes any sense.

Well since kunai are thrown football style this makes perfect sense

Unironically, they aren't, the grip is different, not to mention they don't have spin like a football does. It's just called "no spin throwing". I would describe it more like pitching a baseball without any spin if we insist on sports metaphors, but it's still kind of its own thing. It's sort of like swinging a whip if you let go of the handle at the end...

Kunai (or at least the setting's standardized design) have bad mass distribution to be thrown like a football but you probably could design a projectile that would work for it. Maybe you should just get a cast iron actual football and see how that goes

I think understood what you were trying to say, I just don't think this can be performed with how basic repulsion has been described to work. You might be able to hack a more advanced repulsion shaping exercise to do this, like a simpler version of the spiralling rasengan motions.

Would it be advanced enough chakra manipulation to necessitate Technique Hacking, or would it merely be a high-XP cost stunt to reflect the training that goes into it?

Medical ninjutsu, for example, is often characterized as a "high chakra control" skill, but that's just reflected, mechanically, in the XP investment given to the Mednin skill. And if the stunt were a 50xp cost one, then that would translate to ~10 levels of mednin.

Suddenly, I'm warming up to Cari's idea that all justu should be stunts. Grey areas be fiddly, lol.
