Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Oh, that kinda changes things. If this had been on the boat I'd have wanted Sirim or Mina to teach her a few level 2 defensive spells.

Ah well.

Anyway, can the angel or pepper open the bag for Apinee to dove in or does it have to be the person holding it?
[Even if we can do that, I'm still uncertain that we should, lest the bag be stolen].

It's her mother she's come to save. If things get too hot we will shield her, but otherwise I would like her to stand her ground and us to provide her with necessary buffs. She might be a kid, but she is also a respectable 3rd level wizard.

What spells grant temporary hitpoints?

There are a bunch of different options for Temp HP, but the most accessible right now are Aid and False Life.

As a Cassisian, Oriel can use Aid 1/Day as an SLA.

Aid – d20PFSRD

False Life is a 2nd level spell, so Anippe could possibly have it prepared and have cast recently. It's got a very long duration, so she could have cast it on herself before coming to Refuge and still have lots of time remaining.

False Life – d20PFSRD

We don't really know what spell's Anippe has, though, so that's just speculation on my part.

  • [X] No Blood For You!
-[X] Sirim casts Shadow Conjuration to duplicate a Stinking Cloud spell to affect as many of the Mockingfey and their minions as possible.
-[X] Kori targets as many of the Mockingfey and their minions as possible with a Dark-Light spell. He and Sirim cover as many targets as they can without overlapping their spells, if they are spread out over a large area.
-[X] Mina targets the Invisible Mockingfey leader with a Glitterdust spell, aimed to catch as many of his fellows in the effect as possible.
-[X] Avarice targets the Assassin Vines with his breath weapon (60 foot line of Acid, 6d8 damage).
-[X] Pepper targets Oriel with a Grease spell to make him slippery and less easily grappled by any Assassin Vines which target him.
-[X] Gorok and Cob each activate their Boots of Speed as a Free Action. Gorok then uses his bow to target enemy Fey that avoided the group's spells while Cob throws daggers them.
-[X] If she has a useful spell prepared and sees a good opportunity, Anippe casts it either to hinder the Fey or their Assassin Vines.

Arc 10: Post 77: Enthusiastic Pruning
Enthusiastic Pruning

19th of Abadius 4708 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Sirim's breath is shadows and from your hand a sharp of pale light, one foe sent coughing and sputtering, another rubbing angrily at his eyes at which point something happens you did not expect, a shapeless flap of skin covered in eyes like pustules lands on Pepper as he was surveying the grove turned battlefield. Luckily for you and especially for him surprise isn't enough to tear Pepper out of the air though he's certainly not going to be much help before you can extract him out of that. Not that he's the only one in trouble. A sweep of Mina's hand has Speaks to Blood join some of his subjects in wellness amid cries and imitations of cries across a dozen different languages.

Saves vs Stinking Cloud: 3 Successes, 1 Failure
Saves vs Dark-light: 3 Successes, 1 Failure
Enveloping Eidolon Attack: 1d20+9 = 22 (Success)
Pepper Takes 2 Damage -> Now at 14/16
Pepper Fly (DC 25) = 33 (Success)
Speaks to Blood Will Save: 1d20+11 = 16 (Failure)

You're not the only one to keep an eye among the branches though. Cob with a shout of 'I'll git em!' Cob launches himself back into the pit he had moments before tried to avoid. You have only the barest moment to notice the small sack in his hand.... before it becomes a a fireball behind the line of writhing tendrils, thankfully. Alas they don't seem too singed As Cob grabs on to the 'helm' and... doesn't go anywhere.

"Come on, I carried loads heavier stuff!" The goblin complains, one assumes at the very laws of magic and the spheres of being before deciding to take out his frustration at the mass of hungry tendrils.

Lost 4 Alchemist Fire
Assassin Vines Take
13-10 Damage = 3
Cob Attack: 1d20+15 =
33, 35 (Success)
Assassin Vine takes
14 Damage

It's at this point that Anippe finishes her spell, that she conjures the grease Pepper had been about to before he saw the inside of the beast. With that added aid the angel escapes the vegetable snare.

Oriel Escape Artist: 1d20+10 (Grease) = 25 (Success)

You couldn't say if it's the fact their prisoner had escaped, that their leader and another of their numbers were blinded, or just that they no longer saw easy marks ahead of them, but deadly danger that the green winged fey darts up and up to some kind of cylindrical apparatus to squawks of alarm from his fellows.

"Taste the fury of the flood! May it run red with... hrgh." One of Gorok's arrows finds its mark in his wing. A bold face to be sure but the enemy seems but one more good hit should send them running.

No sooner had the thought passed your mind that you feel some manner of slimy apendage wrap around your ankles binding you in place. How? You look down at your feet at the turned over earth and splattered mud and realize this thing must have come from below in the hopes of snaring it.

Gorok attacks: 25, 21 9 (Success, Failure Failure)
Mokinggey Second takes
13 Damage
Akorian is Entangled

What do you do next?

OOC: So what happened here was Cob's lack of understanding of the details of magic biting you. He knows he can shadow walk with a helmet so he has no reason to assume a helmet with wings would be any harder. Trouble is of course Oriel is an actual living things and it doesn't work like that.

@DragonParadox, Cob and Gorok both have Haste and Mythic Heroism in effect. That should be another +5 attack bonus, +5 bonus damage, and an extra attack each.

Was Avarice not able to attack?

Any way of capturing Speaks to Blood?

If we can take their leader and make the rest flee we might be able to avoid further bloodshed and wasting resources on those who are not our primary target. Fey have a system which is as binding to them as it is alien to others. If we make a point they owe us for the attack, and they can not dismiss us from a position of falsely assumed superiority, we might get somewhere.

Good effort, Cob. Bad timing, but that's a lesson he will remember in the future when we aren't specifying his exact actions.

I think we should continue pressing the Fey, whether that means killing them all or doing so much damage that the survivors flee.

[X] Keep trying to break their morale
-[X] Sirim uses Wild Arcana to target the enemies with a Shadowmind spell to Blind them, prioritizing those Fey not already affected by one of our spells. If there are any Eidolons within his target area and he has less than 9 Fey to select, he will use leftover spots for them.
--[X] Shadowmind Spell: Up to 9 enemies must make a DC 20 Will save or be Blinded.
-[X] Avarice uses his breath weapon against the Assassin Vines now that Oriel is free.
--[X] Breath Weapon: Affected enemies in a 60 foot line take 6d8 Acid damage; DC 13 Reflex save for half damage.
-[X] Mina targets another group of enemies with a Web spell, attempting to capture as many Fey and Eidolons as possible in the effect.
--[X] Web Spell: Affected enemies must make a DC 18 Reflex save or be Grappled, and must attempt the save each time they try to pass through the webbed area.
-[X] Pepper targets the Fey leader with a Snowball spell.
--[X] Snowball Spell: +8 attack vs Blinded Leader's Touch AC, 4d6 Cold damage and DC 15 Fortitude save to avoid being Staggered for 1 round.
-[X] Kori activates his Unfettered Shirt to gain Freedom of Movement for the next 10 minutes.
-[X] Anippe targets an enemy with a ranged spell if she has one available, or an ally with a buff if she does not.
-[X] Cob and Gorok continue to attack at their discretion, with priority placed on Fey who have not yet been Blinded, Nauseated, or Webbed.

If we are already using WIld Arcana, why not blasting?
Mostly because the targets don't seem to be grouped up together well enough to catch them all in an AoE like Fireball. Kori's Dark-Light spell has just as large a radius and it was only able to hit 4 of them, which isn't even half of the total. Casting an Evocation spell with Wild Arcana would also cost Sirim 2 Mythic power.

Fear has a larger AoE and even if they save, affected enemies will be Shaken for one round. Sirim can cast it for only 1 Mythic power, too.

I'm still trying to be conservative with our resources.

@DragonParadox, what is the light level here in the forest? I'm guessing it's Dim?

Dim, you cannot actually see the sky.
In that case I'm going to change the spell Sirim casts to Shadowmind.

BTW, what mechanic are the Mockingfey benefiting from which is adjusting their saving throw DCs? Looking at the rolls from last round, both Kori's and Sirim's spells should have had much higher DCs; 19 for Kori's and 22 for Sirim's, but the Fey only had to save against DC 15. Is it some sort of modified Troop thing? Something to do with AoEs in general?

Given his focus on Illusion spells, Shadowmind should have a much higher DC than Fear, but it might not amount of any difference if all the DCs are reduced to 15. Shadowmind isn't an AoE, though, but rather targets multiple enemies within a certain range, so it might bypass a blanket DC reduction, if that's what is happening.

Oh it's not DC 15. They just have a +7 to the relevant save and it's easier to roll and link 4d20 and keep in mind that a 15 or above is a success than to roll each one as 1d20+7.

Alright.

[x] Keep trying to break their morale

I like that we are going for a debilitating aspect rather than straight killing, and I still want to grab Speaks to Blood for a chat on our terms.
