Project Knight [Mecha Design Bureau]

So right now our requirements look like this:
Main Requirements:
  • ✅Appeal to the budget constraints of Second Tier States (Logistical Values MUST average D or higher).
  • ✅Keep Production Cost affordable (preferably C or higher).
  • ✅Keep Build & Repair Speed ratings high (preferably D or higher).
  • ❌Must be a capable weapons platform against armoured targets (Battle Effectiveness MUST average D or higher).
Bonus Requirements
[*]Kingdom of Kadiri: The people of Java once ruled an empire that stretched across the eastern archipelago, but has now turned its ambitions to the stars.
  • Bonus Requirements:To sell to this faction,
    • ✅Build & Repair Speeds: >= C-
    • ❌Ease of Maintenance >= C-
[*]Bethnar Republic: Extending across the Mesopotamia region of Earth, this ancient and venerable region has been reduced to a shadow of its ancient power and prosperity.
  • Bonus Requirement: To sell to this faction,
    • ✅Tech Simplicity <= C+
    • ✅Material Affordability >= B-
    • ❌Ease of Maintenance >= C-
[*]Sahel Alliance: The Sahel Coalition is less of a unified nation-state and more of a military confederation formed by a number of smaller semi-independent states.
  • Bonus Requirement: To sell to this faction,
    • ❌Skeletal Agility >= E-
    • ❌Heat Management >= C-
[*]Sagittarian Colonial Coalition: Centred in and around the Lagoon Nebula, the SCC was founded by colonists from Earth, but is too isolated to be effectively governed.
  • Bonus Requirements:To sell to this faction,
    • ✅Weapon Hardpoints >= C-
    • ❌Power Control >= C-
    • ❌Armour Plating >= C-

Our current stats:
Dimensions/Tonnage:
Height: ~3.67m
Length: ~6.72m
Breadth: ~2.96m
Tonnage: ~71.24t (calculating usable tonnage..)

Technical Specifications:
N/A

NOTE: I think these are correct, but I'll put them all into a calculator before the next update just to be sure…

Skeletal Design (E)
  • D | S-EFF Structural Efficiency
  • F+ | S-DUR - Skeletal Durability
  • F | S-AGI - Skeletal Agility
  • D+ | S-STB - Skeletal Stability
  • F+ | S-ACT - Actuator Precision
Battle Effectiveness (E)
  • C- | T-WPN - Weapons Hardpoints
  • F+ | T-ARM - Armour Plating
  • F | T-PTP - Pilot Protection
  • E- | T-PTJ - Joint Protection
  • E | T-PTC - Component Protection
Power and Drive Effectiveness (D)
  • E+ | P-PWC - Power Control
  • C- | P-SPD - Limb Drive Speed
  • D- | P-HTM - Heat Management
Logistical Values (C-)
  • B | L-CST - Material Affordability
  • D | L-TCH - Tech Simplicity
  • C | L-BNR - Build & Repair Speeds
  • E+ | L-EOM - Ease of Maintenance

Battle Effectiveness, Power Control and Heat Management I'm not concerned about--that's armor, weapons, engines, and other internals we haven't crammed into this thing yet. Skeletal Agility and Ease of Maintenance are what we need to be fixing. We have a little bit of leeway with Material Affordability, but not a lot. We have a lot more lee-way, I believe, with Limb Drive Speed, especially as the engines are likely to boost that further.

Which is to say I think we can take
[X] Joint Replacement Bearings
[X] Ribbed Hull Structure

[X] Limb Erector Adjustments

Not the most flashy of options, but I think it goes a long ways to meeting what these nations are asking.

[X] Skeletal Hardening

I think this has the least draw backs and helps fix important problems.

Also it looks like we can only fix 4 problems if they are not the bad it looks like. So we should save it on more critical parts like engine.

Any of these are fine, I just hate Ribbed Hull. Too much cost.

That's part of it. I also remember someone here saying that second tier states have to deal with mostly pirates and raiders and I can find it which is driving me nuts.
I'm the guy you're thinking of, you're misremembering the actual quote.

"Following that, there's the fact that the primary predicted mission is Hunting Pirates and Defensive Linebacking. The former makes Large chassis problematic because pirates prefer guerilla warfare as a rule. The bigger your AV, the less capable it is of countering guerilla warfare both tactically and logistically - it's slower and less able to keep up, and it's more expensive so you have fewer to cover territory with. The latter can technically use Large chassis as defensive strongpoints, but it's not optimal because the fewer units you have the more you have to rely on Rope-a-Dope strategy, which tends to be hard on your population and infrastructure."

This chassis has two primary missions. The first is the Pirate Hunting, which you've already gone over and are doing a decent job of.

The second part you're missing is Defensive Linebacking. This means that it must, in whatever fashion be it tanking evasion or something else, be capable of two things;
---intercepting enemies
---hold the line against a peer opponent until at minimum a full evacuation and retreat is completed.

There are several different means of completing all objectives, but when you pair that requirement with the need to kill a chassis of roughly equivalent size, at least one large and/or high power anti-armor weapon is a fundamental requirement. And if you're doing it anyway and have the ability to optimize that big gun for a low additional cost, do so.

Most on the fact I dislike the other options.
Not sure it be the best choice but we'll see.

So, some musings for future generations of mechs: I'm wondering how the setting will decide generational shifts among mechs.

So Gen 1 will likely be famed for Fatty Hanger queens unless we or a rival pulls off a miracle with their ease of maintenance rating. I think a Gen 2 mech is gonna be defined as when everyone figures out how to not make their mechs obese maintenance hogs consistently.

Hard to say but comparison and competition would likely be one the major factors. Our only competition so far is the Zaibatsu which is a bipedal combat mech known for its flexible joints and multiple hardpoints and whatever East Africa is cooking up which probably is using an industrial mech as its skeletal base. From the getgo people would see that there are alternatives to the biped designs. If we manage to hit all the requirements then ours would likely be known as a reliable defender that can be used on parades.

EDIT: Writing an update for the other quest still, I'll get on this once that's done.

stats for the two winning options.

Limb Erector Adjustments
[Skill for Rolls: Skeletal Kinematics (+3)]

[+1] Skeletal Agility, [+1] Power Control, [+1] Ease of Maintenance
[-1] Project Funding (you will lose an additional 1/4 of your contingency budget on top of the 1 already spent)

Skeletal Hardening
[Skill for Rolls: Materials Science (+2)]

[+1] Skeletal Durability, [+1] Joint Protection, [+1] Ease of Maintenance
[-1] Decreased Usable Tonnage

So
  • +2 ease of Maintenance
  • +1 Skeletal Agility
  • +1 Power Control
  • +1 Skeletal Durability
  • +1 Joint Protection
  • -1 Decreased Usable Tonnage
  • we are now at 50% of our contingency budget
edit: depending on the dice I think we're gonna end up on the edge of hitting the agility target and be halfway to our ease of maintenance target.

I think we will need that budget on the engine the most i believe. I have a feeling that might needs to be reworked eventually. Maybe guns too but we will have to see. We have plenty of options left to choose from and from previous comments there might be more then weapons and engine left. So who knows what else there is if we have the budget for it.

Edit: Also different customer wants different things. So we have to aim at one of those customers also.

Engine and armor votes will decide if we get the SCC goals.

The KoK and BR goals we just need to hit the ease of maitance target to land (and we still have room to improve tech simplicy before we hit the BR goal's cap)

Sahel is the one i have the most concern about hitting at this point because unless we roll really well because i belive the armor vote is gonna be our only chance to get skeletal agility on target.

but in the short term, I'm even more convinced we need to do off-the-shelf only for our weapon picks as our chance to make solid gains on both the ease of production stats and ease of maintenance while hitting our battle efficiency target.

The Bethnar Republic wants C+ or less for tech simplicity. Chech it out.

  • Bonus Requirement: To sell to this faction, Tech Simplicity must not be higher than C+, Material Affordability must be at least B-, Ease of Maintenance must be at least C-

So it will almost be impossible to get every customer. Though it does add to the challenge of making mechs. I can also see why simplicity would not be desired. Maybe they don't want anyone else to be able to make the mechs. Just my theory.

what I'm saying is that tech simplicity is at D currently, so we have room to increase that without failing that requirement.
