Although I agree with the broad concept, I'm fairly sure unloading our small arms into the frontal armour of what's effectively an AFV is actually a terrible idea; especially if it allows the scarabs to get into our line.

I don't normally make plans, but Distraction Carnifex is a reoccurring meme because it works.

Shine has a very good point, so I edited my plan, changing the priority target from everyone but Centari to Charlie, so that we can hopefully take out the Scarabs before they get close again, and they might not be able to really damage the Skorpekh Lord. And if they manage to take out the Scarabs before all of them have had their shooting turn, then they can just aim at other targets. I'd rather concentrate on one target to ensure it is taken out, instead of being left with two wounded ones that can still fight back.

[X] Plan: An Obvious Trap

Your arm swung out in a sweeping gesture that drew the attention of your subordinates. "Organized withdrawal," you carefully phrased, making sure to stress a steady tone. It was vital nobody assumed the order came from panic. "Abandon this forward position and ready for a new battle line. Maintain coherency, keep up the covering fire!"

It was quickly circulated about and just a little too eagerly, the Vaulters readied themselves. Not to say that they weren't afraid of a fight, but they'd like having some better cover just in case. Bigger guns would also be most welcomed, though not exactly a luxury that could be afforded right now. They'd have to just settle for a big laser presently.

Said weapon now cackled and glowed brightly, accompanied by a simple declaration from its wielder. "Affront to the Omnissiah detected. Prioritizing with all available weaponry. Firing." With that, the Onager Dunecrawler opened up with everything it had, focusing solely on the giant skeleton with three legs.

The beam weapon swept over the massive column in the way and clipped the edge of the Skorpekh Lord's legs, possibly an attempt to hamstring it. But before the attack could intensify, the limb flickered and vanished from visibly sight, letting the intense heat sear into the ground. When it petered out, spent, the missing leg suddenly returned in a flash of light. The Skorpekh Lord seemed to leer and glare at the Mechanicus vehicle, similarly unfazed by the hail of bullets unleashed their way from the angered operator.

You wouldn't be intimidated by such a sight and raised your voice. "Keep firing, keep the swarms off our allies! Maintain the discipline, Sergeants, and watch your ammunition! Fire when ready!"

The more experienced members of the 99th Scintillia leveled their precise fire at the closest target, taking advantage of the short range to unload the full weight of their firearms. Las bolts lit up the air and filled the space between fluttering Scarabs, relying on volume to bring as many down as possible. At least a full third were eliminated outright, and a good portion more came away spouting a few holes in their insect-like carapace.

Meanwhile, the more greener troops surprised you and perhaps even themselves when at Sergeant Neginol's direct command, they targeted the Warriors in the distance over the incoming Scarabs. The fact that a few of the advancing xenos were actually brought down by the unexpected marksmanship was slightly shocking, but a welcomed shot in the arm for the regular soldiery. Perhaps the famed durability of these foes was overblown.

Then the Skorpekh Lord screeched and you suppressed a sigh. You supposed the failure to damage it in anyway during the retreat was probably more a fitting statement to the point. That, or the apparent grudge the God-Emperor held against any vehicles you took command of.

Even more Scarabs flew out from the inner depths of the fortress, their incessant clicking putting people's teeth on edge. Then it drew closer with the first wave of them coming closer, along with the low whine of some anti-gravity technology. Around the pillar came its source, a growling Heavy Destroyer that brought its massive gauss weapon to bear on the exposed Mechanicus vehicle in your midst.

It fired and immediately the Onager Dunecrawler twitched with unnatural swiftness, managing to swing at just the right angle to evade the beam of energy. It likely was due to the fact the pilot was directly wired into the machine, almost practically a part of it now. It just as quickly swiveled back around to face the array of shots that came its way next from the Skorpkeh Lord.

Whatever weapon was attached to its arm fired and unlike before, the energy shield didn't activate around the war walker. But despite the dark reputation usually associated with Necron weaponry, the vehicle's own armor stoically weathered the shots with a seeming nerve of steel. The assault soon ended with naught but a few scorch marks to show for it. "The Omnissiah protects!"

Neginol raised his voice, an audible fed-up tone infecting his command. "Here they come again, see them off once more! We've done it once, we can do it again!" To emphasize the point, he pulled out a grenade and pulled the pin. "Frag out!"

They rose to the challenge rather splendidly, swapping smoothly to their full-auto fire modes and unleashing volleys into the charging beetle swarms. That combined with the explosive that went off in their midst was enough to displace the Scarabs again. Now there were only a few left feebly flying about, to the point where they could almost be written off. If you dared.

By now, the initial entrance you had taken was overwhelmed by the Necrons. You considered it carefully before glancing at the fleeing Penitents still behind your new line. There were a few bodies of theirs littered in front from whee they weren't fast enough, and you feared that might grow if you retreated too quickly. So you still had to be their rearguard, no matter what.

Losing the forward position is hardly ideal, but well within the plan. Continue to buy time and hold the passageway's center at (Sector 2 E5) for as long as possible. Every minute counts, don't let them overwhelm you. For every turn you hold, gain 15 victory points. However the enemy now gains 20 victory points at the end of each turn. When the objective is captured, there will be a new objective in Sector 1. Additionally, a random reinforcement will be automatically successful.

Despite the pits in their armor, there was still a tone of undeniable unbreakable pride and zealotry in Centari-109's broadcast. "Do not falter, do not hesitate! Do not give the enemy nothing but the annihilation they deserve, in the name of the Omnissiah!"

"That's quite a stirring battle cry, but I prefer our own," A familiar voice commented over the comm-bead. It was Sergeant Raou, you could practically feel the wide grin he was making right now. "Everybody over here seems to agree, so at your command Major!"

You blinked and frowned. "What do you mean everybody? Surely you don't mean...?"

"Everybody, this isn't a joke!"

Yet for some reason, you still found yourself on the verge of hysterics. Maybe because your opponent had no idea that the Hammer of the Imperium was about to descend upon them.

There's just this glee you can only get when rolling the insane amount of dice for a rapid + volley fire with the wall of guns.
One unit fires on the scarab, more target the warriors, everyone seems cover, big gun on the warlord?
Remember that priority target is meant for directly bypassing individual unit judgement on what to shoot. It's best used for when you have a bigger picture plan.

Centari, Tretium and Cintus are fine with their current orders, but we should have Nero pull a bit more back, to get into the building and be closer for our approaching reinforcements, which need to move up asap to take that objective and then leave one squad there to hold it and rest move order range from Nero.

We need to hold the right area with all the cover, to both protect our units and to also deny it for the enemy, forcing them to cross no-man's land to get to us and the objective. Only important thing is Centari continuing on concentrating on Golf, others can attack which ever enemy unit is most opportune and in range.

You don't have to capture it, you just have to deny the enemy from taking it if that matters. A unit on the point could help in contesting it still if the enemy attempts to make the capture but you don't have to sit on it necessarily to keep the points coming.

"Centari-109!" The operator paused at the mention over the communication network. "We've established a new fallback point, that structure right there. Our reinforcements are meeting us there."

Calculations were swiftly made and a response was produced from the presented probabilities. "Affirmative. Onager Dunecrawler repositioning to match." With a hiss, the walker's leg motors adjusted the backwards march, bringing the war machine to the calculated optimal support position.

It rubbed you slightly wrong to retreat further back from the frontline, your lifeguards moving to secure the claimed structure, but it was something you had to realize was for the best at this moment. Your skills leaned heavily towards being a support commander for Fifth Battalion, and here you could issue orders from the safety of the back. You and your escorts' firepower was currently incomparable to the bristling wall of guns that could be brought to bear instead, and you had to recognize that for this fight.

So you glanced the way of your reinforcements and held out your hand. "Flare!" Gauin dutifully passed one over from his webbing and you popped the cap off, activating the signal stick. The end of the stick illuminated the dark surroundings up and you waved it high, hopefully catching the attention of your incoming support. "All squads, rally on my flare! We're hold for as long as we can here!"

The Scintillian's finely mastercrafted weapons sang their deadly hymn, volleys of las bolts falling upon with immaculate precision from afar. The last of the Scarab swarm was plucked from the air, their carapaces thoroughly pierced through by the ranged fire from afar. That was the swiftest threat so far eliminated, or at least one of them. Your eyes turned to face the other one, that hovering Heavy Destroyer readying its Heavy Gauss.

You made a decision and raised the forward positions. "Vaulters, I want you focusing down that anti-armor threat. Get disciplined fire on that, and bring it down!"

What came forth was a torrent of pulsing orange lasers, each stabbing into the necrodermis and heating the skin by just a little. But what they lacked in penetration they made up for in volume, the sheer weight of almost twenty lasguns opening up on full-auto at such close range being akin to a mutli-laser. The Necron screamed and collapsed, feebly twitching on the ground. Neginol took no chances and plugged them in the head with his laspistol, the action triggering flash of teleportation that had the Necron vanishing from the battlefield.

His squad cheered as he let out a breath he'd been unknowing holding. But still he gave a tired grin before tapping on the comm-bead. "Ma'am, target destroyed. I think you owe us drinks."

You hastily suppressed a triumphant yell with a controlled cough. You couldn't celebrate just yet. "Make it through, and I'll see it done back on the ships." Then you swapped to another squad. "Trouttet, sorry, you've lost your shot at lasting glory again!"

"Throne dammit, we'll make our own then! Target those Warriors, what are you lot waiting for? Fire!"

At such extreme ranges, even the artisan lasguns were struggling to have any lingering punch to them. But still by chance, a shot caught one of the advancing skeletal Warriors in the chest and brought it low, the sight not unwelcome to the 99th Scintillia. They wouldn't complain at such results.

Then Centari-109 deigned to lend their aid, the hull-mounted heavy stubber opening up to fire on the advancing infantry squad

Another was brought down, a simple statistic noted and filed by the Skitarii pilot. Their main focus was instead wholly on the Skorpekh Lord leering from behind a pillar, their alien skull focused on and magnified by the optical systems. The outburst of emotion was most unbecoming, and it perhaps was what gave the attack away to the target. The laser fired and went straight past the Necron foe, their body once again flickering from existence to allow the beam to pass harmlessly through them. Centari-109 was silent, properly chastised when the hated xeno foe materialized back into realspace, eyes glowing with hatred that surely matched their own.

This was echoed by the Skorpekh Lord and as one, the Necrons moved up. Their numbers were reinforced by one of the slain Warriors returning to the fold, the machine calmly getting back to their feet in spite of the massive crater in their chest. Cheers were replaced by screams when the rubble proved worthless in face of the destructive Necron weaponry, which turned all to dust. Rock, clothing, flesh, it mattered not- all was broken down into their most basic particles to be trampled over.

As if that brutality was not enough, that was when the heavier guns fired, both of them focusing on the Mechanicus war machine. A flickering force shield appeared to ward off some of it, but it soon collapsed and the Onager Dunecrawler shuddered when it was subjected to the power of gauss weaponry. "Warning, alert, caution!" They blared. "Integrity dropping, hull compromised. Repairs recommended, soothe the machine spirit!"

Squad Cintus has Morale 7 (Sergeant Neginol)
Morale check: 1 +3 (Lost) = 4

"Hold steady!" Neginol reassured the shocked troopers. "We got overconfident, and we paid for it. But we'll see them avenged yet." His words helped calm down some of the panic and soon, they were ready to continue the fight. The lessening enemy numbers helped lend some hope to that, no matter the losses they would suffer in the process.

Fifth Battalion, 99th Scintillia: 125
Fifth Cohort, 3rd Legion: 60
END TURN 3

(Canticle of the Omnissiah: 5. Invocation of Machine Might activated!)

"Do not weep at what is suffered in duty- rage, and repay it tenfold!" Centari-109 muttered over the comm-bead and you gritted your teeth, wondering just where they had such confidence even when under fire. Perhaps it was a stimulant of some kind wired into their systems. Did you need one to hold steady in the face of this dire assault?

- Set Trap (3 CP). Setup a little surprise for whoever storms your abandoned position. Activate when the enemy ends movement on a Terrain Feature. They take d3 Mortal Wounds.

- Double Tap (1 CP). Just to be safe, they're tougher than they look.. Activate when rolling for wounds. Reroll all 1s.

- Inspired Orders (1 CP). In the Guard, follow the one with the most stars. An officer can immediately issue an additional command after their last one.

- Loose Grenadiers (1 CP). Ready grenades! Hurl! An infantry squad may use all Grenade weapons instead of only one when in Shooting or Overwatch.

- Heroic Intervention (2 CP). Acts of daring are at home on the battlefield. A unit led by a character within 3" of a friendly unit in a fight may join in the Fight phase.

- Imagine being the Necron noble that died to a squad of Guardsmen armed with nothing but flashlights.
- Well, overall, you gained more than you lost. For now. But you might need to shield Centari-109 with bodies now, vehicles usually do lose some stats the more injured they become (namely Movement and BS). Alternatively, could be a final charge into glory with that canticle.

14 hour moratorium to make a turn plan.

Wohoo, nice.
Good, at least it is completely out.

Yeah, it is too early to celebrate.

Oh no, this is bad.

Hm, we should probably pull the Centari a back a bit, while getting two of our freshly arrived veterans to cover on the right, and one squad either stay with the objective or try to get to the cover in the left.

@Celeshiro
Do the Necron Heavy Destroyers count as infantry or vehicles? Can they actually get cover bonus from other things than forest.

We need to pull Centari back a bit to protect the objective, they're taking a pounding, and hopefully the Golf Lord will be drawn to it, while our reinforcements continue to getting into cover and in range of our commands. Otherwise, we need to hold this line.
