Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

She sells scrolls, wands, rings and amulets from Absalom. She also takes orders to procure more exotic wares especially from the south, but those are paid for in advance. The word smuggler wouldn't be polite, but it would perhaps be accurate.
Ah, I see. I'm having to resist the urge to put together another shopping list.

She seems like a good potential merchant for both buying and selling suitable goods in the future. We might even earn ourselves a nice discount on future purchases.

With that sort of specialty, it isn't unreasonable to expect that she would have a PfE ring, Ring of Mind Shielding, and an Amulet of Proof Against Detection and Location for Anippe to use. Maybe a Hat of Disguise, too? I don't like the idea of loaning Sirim's stuff out for long-term missions like this, even if it's all just sitting in a bag waiting for him to get a new meatsuit.

Does Eshe have any particularly interesting items for sale? Purely out of curiosity, of course.

I'd have to roll for them, but in principle she must have something

PoSK for that level 1 spell that can give rerolls or a +2 luck bonus when you roll the same number that you did that moment it was cast on you?

Edit: Depending on her current build, I wonder if she'd like to retrain into something that uses Cob-magic?

Lucky Number

Does she have a PoSK of that one, DP?
  1. Yes, he would be fine with that
  2. *rolls for it* Sorry, no Ioun stones
How about that Bead of Karma? Those aren't Ioun Stones. Or was that roll for both?

So what is the timeline here? We are to take Anippe to Cheliax and then return her once we come back? Today is Kuthona 26th; the year is going to be out in a week, and I presume, the oath of the Bloodlord with it. But if he can't get to the child in time for his oath, wouldn't he still be a threat afterwards, out of spite if nothing else?

Somehow I feel this is not going to be over until he is dead-dead.

Hehehe, our party is apparently getting good at traveling and taking care of kids, lol.

I just love the idea of Cob wanting to teach her all the stuff he thinks is important.

Besides, we do kind of owe the lady.

Are you sure?
That seems unnecessarily complicated for minor benefits.

Do you want DP to roll a random number each and every day that triggers the lucky number, and then decide when to actually cash in the bonus/reroll when it comes up?
I doubt it will ever amount to much consistent benefit. The spell is only 1st level, though, and the scroll is cheap.

It's complicated, but it doesn't hurt to have the tool in our toolbox, just in case. Hell, for simplicity's sake when it gets included in a plan, we could use the forum's built-in dice roller so DP wouldn't need to track it himself.
Goldfish threw 1 20-faced dice. Total: 17

Yeah, it's not that complicated. I'll manage.

That's a good question. The year is almost done, @DragonParadox. Does Eshe need Anippe gone for less than a week, or would she prefer it if we keep her for a month or more? Teleporting to Cheliax will be quick, but then we have to get the Iruxi ready to move and escort them to the shore, and then the ocean voyage afterwards will probably take at least a couple weeks.

Not exactly what I would have expected to include in our CV, but it's not a bad thing, I guess. As long as we don't get too many escort/child care missions.

I do like the idea of Cob taking a hand in her education.

Updated my plan to add a couple more scrolls to the list of purchases; Mirror Sight that we couldn't find earlier, plus Rope Trick for convenience. It's a handy spell, plus it counts as being on another Plane for the purposes of being targeted by Scrying spells. If Anippe sleeps in a Rope Trick space, during that time she'll be even more difficult to find.

Biggest addition, however, is Sirim trying to get Eshe to part with a bunch of Greater False Vision scrolls and some way to Extend them. It's a high level spell, though, so I would be surprised if she has many of them on hand. Can't hurt to ask, though, not when it's to protect her daughter.

[X] Take the girl along, if you managed to get a baby out of Cheliax you can take a child into it and back out again
-[X] We will gladly accept one of the scrolls as payment, but we were hoping to buy at least a pair of them today, if possible. The journey from Cheliax could be a long one, and it wouldn't do us much good for the spell to elapsed when our ship is in the middle of the Inner Sea.
--[X] Also purchase a Lucky Number (25 gold) and Rope Trick (150 gold) spell scroll, and a few Calculated Luck (375 gold each) and Mirror Sight spell scrolls (375 gold each), if Eshe has them available. We could use Mirror Sight to allow two-way communication between Eshe and our group.
-[X] Does she have suitable equipment for Anippe? If Anippe is the target of a powerful mage, she needs to be warded against Scrying and similar magics, at the very least.
--[X] Sirim will interject, pointing out that if the greatest danger for Anippe will pass as the last days of the year conclude in less than a week, the best way we can insure her safety would be to not only be mobile, but also to use Greater False Vision spells. If Eshe has enough of those scrolls available, and some means to stretch their duration, such as a supply of Extending Garnets or even a Greater Metamagic Rod of Extend Spell she could lend us, it would improve Anippe's chances significantly.
-[X] Has Anippe begun to learn to wield magic similar to her mother? Or does she posses any other noteworthy skills or abilities? <Basically, does she have any class levels, and if so, what are they?>

Just had a thought. If Anippe is being hunted by Gebbites, that means Undead are on the table.

Could we ask for some Greater Hide from Undead scrolls from Eshe, too?

Arc 10: Post 17: When Questions Abound New
When Questions Abound

26th of Kuthona 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Somehow you'd managed to get a babe out of Cheliax, surely you can take a child to its shores and back, you reason, leaving aside for now the fact that the child is being hunted.

So when Gorok asks about the nature of the payment and Sirim starts asking about obscure spells you raise no objections.

Surprised, Mina looks back at you. "No words of caution Kori?"

Scroll Rolls (DC 20, 30, 90, 10): 67, 35, 84, 43
Gain 1x Lucky Number, 1x Rope Trick, and 4x Mirror Sight
Lost 1,675 gp
Gain 3x Greater False Vision Scrolls*
Gain 3x Unseen Crew Scrolls (Payment)
*DC 0 roll effectively since it makes sense for her to have something like that for the purpose.

"Sometimes the cautious approach is knowing which risks to take," you shrug.

As the mistress of the house leads you into her private rooms and laboratories above the main shop floor, you glad to find them draped in relative modesty of substance and form; tan sandstone polished and marked with geometric patterns and some dark woods polished to a luster with aromatic oils. The vibrant hues of the upper world sometimes exhaust the eyes.

Perhaps to compensate for that fact, Anippe doesn't so much walk in as burst onto the scene like the Chelish Cavalry in the Trials of Darl Jubannich: "Oh, it's you! Didn't break in this time, I bet? 'Cause you'd be in a lot worse shape if you did that while Mom was home. Woah, you're a lot shinier than last time. Hey, what's that floating around you're head, master goblin? It looks kind of like an ioun stone, but the colors are all wrong."

It turns out that when one combines the boundless curiosity of an eight year old skillful enough to advance in the arcane arts with the lack of any worries for herself or her mother's reaction, what you get are questions, lots and lots of questions. At the very least you don't have to worry about needing to pry a tearful child from her home. In fact, the greatest issue that seems to arise from the conversation is Anippe's concern that she's going to be a burden because she doesn't know any 'sailing magic,' to which Sirim outright laughs, an eerie hollow sound that nonetheless carries genuine mirth.

"Child, that you have mastered any spells beyond a cantrip at your age is remarkable, a sign of great talent or dedication, both precious beyond gold."

"Really, you mean that?" she looks up at him with some suspicion, not for being a living coil of smoke, but doubting his compliments. As though to push for a more sincere one, she adds. "Sometimes I can cast a spell without casting it. Chaos magic is supposed to be really rare this far from the Mana Wastes, but I have a knack for it. Mother says it's because I was born there."

"Conceived, technically," Eshe cuts in judiciously.

Judging from the face her daughter makes you suspect it was intentional to cut off the torrent of words as best she could. With a fond but sad smile she hands the child a bundle of essentials, secreted among them the wards against far-sight and foresight, even a ring with the particular power to guard one from the eyes of the dead, though more the lesser than the greater. Thus Anippe dons a hat bearing an improbably bright red feather and in moment takes on the guise of a gnome in... the same recognizable hat.

"That is not quite how you do it," you inform the child solemnly. "The point is to blur into the crowds, see..."

  • Protection from Evil Ring
  • Cloak of Mind Shielding
  • Ring of Hide from Undead (x3 Day)
  • Hat of Disguise

Alas, you think, that guarding her is going to be more than a matter of teaching good tradecraft.

Once all farewells are said your company of five is left with a sixth who while not a helpless babe is still going to need more protection, waking and sleeping.

Who among the party is going to stick with the kid most of all?

[] Akorian

[] Mina

[] Cob

[] Sirim

[] Gorok

OOC: I spent way too long trying to find a way for a wizard to cast Hide from Undead, but the only way I was able to find that could have worked at level 3 is Arcane Domain which requires that there be a domain with the spell you are interested in and as far as I call tell no domain has Hide from Undead.

@DragonParadox, any chance that amulet of Anippe's can be a ring or bracelet, or something other than an amulet? She's going to need that slot for the Nondetection amulet.

I'm sure Cob and Anippe would be entertaining to see more of, I think Sirim is the best choice here. She's a Wizard, too, and Sirim was very impressed with her progress learning magic so far. Him wanting to hang close to give her some pointers makes sense.

Also, he should be maintaining his Detect Scrying spell for the remainder of this mission, now that Anippe is coming along. It has a 40 foot radius centered on Sirim, so as long as he is near her, he will be able to detect if someone is trying to Scry her location.

@DragonParadox, I'm assuming Anippe is a 1st level Wizard?
