A Desperate Measure (Worm/Exalted Quest)

1) power testing adds very little to the narrative and 2) I wanted to get you guys out of the PRTs clutches (or further into them if you failed the venture) ASAP so you could start making real decisions. Asking for power testing would have opened up another vote about whether or not you actually comply, which would have extended this little PRT captive arc longer than I'd like. For in-universe justification, we can say Gallant and Kid Win were supposed to try and convince you to do that, but you socialed them so hard they never had a chance
That's fair and valid reasons. I just want a line or two that taylor tested a bit of her powers and didn't go blindly because she though she is knife prove while she is not.

Huh, taking Mara as the initiation is not where I expected this to go, but it'll sure make for interesting character development (assuming that plan wins; it's currently the only plan, so...)
I will try to find a way to... *aquire* pdf of Exalted to see if there is another initiation if I want to make a separate plan, but if not, would "something to protect Danny for long period of time and/or the house" work as write in?

That's entirely fair, I'll make sure there's mention of power testing before Taylor does any proper caping. Might only be a line or two, but I'll put something in there just so you can be confident she knows her own strength.

Hmm, so there's two things that come to mind here. My main thought for how to do that is sorcery and the summon doggo spell, which already has a plan. The other is "Underling Promoting Practice", a Presence charm that would let Danny borrow your combat dice pools for one committed mote. So yes, that would be a valid write in, I'd probably use it as justification to have you learn Underling Promoting Practice rather than sorcery since that already has a plan.

For other initiations that I think might work, there's Ifrit Pact (you gain Will from burning offerings, the more valuable the more Will), Raksi's Teachings (you gain Will whenever someone is afraid of you or you suceed on an intimidation roll. This one's good for a lot of the reasons the Mara one is, you're good at social), Soul-Perfecting Elixir (you gain Will whenever you can retrieve weird ingredients and brew a potion), Student of the Heptagram (you gain Will whenever you study the local geomancy), Theanoan Method (you gain will whenever you can inscribe your spells on something), and Wanaasan Exorcist (you gain Will through ceremonial immersion in water).

And of course, there's always the homebrew option! I believe I'll be putting the initiation up to a separate vote in the next update if sorcery wins, and I'll include at least one homebrew option in the vote.

Edit: I should clarify, Underling Promoting Practice lets Danny borrow whatever dice pool you choose when you commit the mote. So if you think combat won't be useful on a given day you could, for example, give him your Presence dice pool instead and let him roll 9 dice to persuade people.

Thanks btw Could you put a short explanation of what each of the stats means in the character sheet?

That's good to know for the future, but I think I want sorcery and doggo first. Doggo would make a great marketable plushie for a talk with Parian in the future or PRT if we get working relationship that they can sell our merch and give us some money.

I like the write ins for how to do things. Not entirely sold on talking about Sol but eh... I'm sure Cauldron can cover than much.

Kinda surprised about the choice of Mara, but it's not a deal-breaker.

I choose it for the synergy with the social skills, we are going to cause a lot of admiration, some of it in non-extra individuals and more to the point Earth Bet's Cape Culture is designed to facilitate that kind of parasoical relationship. None of the others seemed like they would trigger reliably without complicating circumstances.

I think I'm definitely going to make the sorcerous initiation it's own vote at this point, because I view it as more than just a way to get Will. It's a statement about your character, about how you view the world and how you reach for power. Do you seek understanding and ancient rituals? Do you acquire power over others, viewing love or fear as weapons? Do you seek mastery over the world, or harmony with it?

This is gonna affect Taylor's character development to a degree, because sorcerous initiation isn't a small thing. Keep that in mind for the next vote* (which will definitely include Mara's initiation as an option!)

*assuming the magical girl plan wins, which looks likely at this point. I'll probably call the vote this evening when I get home from work

I'm somewhat tempted to vote to pick up Glorious Solar Arsenal then join New Wave purely for the rumors of Taylor being Carol's love child or somesuch But the wind wolf seems cool.

With regard to the shaping ritual I'm thinking Theanoan. Given we're going for a summon spell that lasts a whole day the requirement to inscribe it for extra will doesn't seem very taxing. Asuming "inscribe" means write not carve it shouldn't be too hard to carry around a pad and pen for any future spells we want to cast in the field.

It might be less useful for middle of combat spells but we have a ton of other charm options for mid combat stuff and it's not like we can't cast without it.

I'll be sure to include that option in the vote then!

And it's worth noting that the Theanoan initiation specifically states you inscribe the spells "as a reflexive action," meaning it does work at combat speed as long as you can stunt some element of the spell being inscribable

This feels like the best options here.

True enough I guess maybe a write in to get will by saving/helping people. Feeding of the feeling of gratitude
So I have sort of a plan for how I'm going to present all the possible shaping rituals you can learn in the next update, and it doesn't leave much room for write ins. However, I will absolutely take suggestions now of what sort of things to homebrew.

Funnily enough, this idea actually sort of fits one that I had already. Not exactly, but enough that I think you'll be satisfied with the initiation I present.

Can't wait to freak out the PRT with our unParahumaness

Okay, I've modified the character sheet to include explanations of what everything means. There's probably still gonna be some confusion around some points, like what hardness means, but I've tried my best to explain everything. Some of these things (like everything related to combat) will become more clear as we continue the quest and the relevant mechanics come up.

Do Not Talk About Sol, like the guy is a good guy but earth beth its not prepared to understand the there is a literal perfect being that loves you and wants you to thrive and he used shards of his divinity to create demigods to protec you and help guide you to a better future, earth beth its not ready for that revelation

Also i like this plan, sorcery its always fun but for anybody that doesnt know exalted either from playing or just reading the manual, Taylor is a Zenith and there is on phrase that defines Zeniths "If you need to punch to resolve a situation you are playing Zeniths wrong" not saying we should never fight but as we just saw Taylor now is the type of Solar that can pull a talk no jutsu on the S9 and it would probably work with at least half of it, also Solars rule like thats a fact so Taylor suberting every single institution in the bay its not weird at all

I think the vote is pretty definitive at this point, and I want to get to work on the next chapter, so I'm closing the vote here. Thanks for voting everyone!

-[X] Buy the first dot in an ability
    --[X] Sagacity
-[X] Sorcerous Initiation: (Prerequisite: Sagacity 1) The Exalt has internalized the inner workings of Creation's Essence, giving the power to reshape the world at its fundament. The sorcerer gains the ability to learn and cast First Circle Spells. This Charm can be repurchased at Sagacity 3, Essence 3 to gain access to Second Circle Spells. A final repurchase at Sagacity 5, Essence 5 grants access to Third Circle Spells. Not every Exalt can use every circle. With each purchase of this Charm, the sorcerer also gains a free Spell and shaping ritual.
--[X] Shaping Ritual (Free): Bargain With Mara: You learned sorcery at the cloven feet of Mara, the demon-queen of love betrayed. When a nontrivial character expresses unrequited love, admiration, or obsession for the sorcerer, she gains three Will.
--[X] First Circle Spell (Free): Hound of the Five Winds You conjure an enormous wolf from raw air Essence — a fine mount, companion, guardian, and bloodhound. Spend 3 Will. The Hound of the Five Winds is treated as a predator beast, adding tracking to its primary pool. The hound is large enough to use as a mount, immune to fear, and never tires. It also gains a one-success bonus on scent-based tracking rolls. It serves loyally and eagerly for one day before disappearing.

Ask if they have a "hero 101" brochure for you to get the basics, and thus, hopefully, it will cause them fewer headaches or something like that.

---[X] Their capes: Knowing who you will fight will help you plan
---[X] Their territory: Gangs aren't known for sharing so it will help you a lot to learn where you can expect them
---[X] Ask Dad if you can get a cell phone and a bodycam; a cell phone to call the cops or PRT (and dad if he is worried) a bodycam to help with the legal side of taking in gangsters

2.1
You dream of a world that is perfect, just, with everyone happy and safe. This world is ruled by luminous golden beings, as beautiful as they are wise, as courageous as they are compassionate, and you realize with wonder that you are one of them, if much younger than the rest. The older beings are so kind to you, they show you what it means to be a golden being such as yourself, with the vast power you now wield, and they give you lands to rule as you see fit.

It is here the first cracks begin to form, for you do not believe in rulers, do not believe that one woman should stand above all others, but your protests fall on deaf ears. It is right, the beings tell you. You are luminous, you are golden, and so you will rule.

You refuse. You cast off your crown and topple your throne, and in this sacrifice there is power. You see the world with new eyes, wielding the power of a toppled throne, and in this you hope you might better the people you now will never rule.

The golden beings are amused. "What fun!" they exclaim. "What novelty! Never before has one of us cast off her crown. Let us watch and see what she does!"

You dedicate your new power to the sick and to the poor, for though this world is safe and peaceful men still grow old, and there are always those who have not. You humble yourself before them, a luminous being washing their feet and tending to their sores, and in this too there is power. For hierarchies are built on power, and power is released as they are abolished.

This too amuses the other golden beings, but it puzzles you. Twice now have you denied your birthright as a luminous being, and twice now you have received power for it. Is this always the way? Are golden ones such as yourself doomed to be the only ones with any strength? Such a world is not perfect, such a world is not just.

You refuse to accept this, so you study. You study the world, and the cosmos, and the nature of your power and at the end of your study you find a secret: there is an order to the cosmos, and in the understanding of that order there is power. At last, you see it, a way that the world can be free of your golden curse, a way that all men shall wield power and thus none will have any more power than another. This is just. This is perfect.

So you scheme, you clever thing, you ply the golden beings with honeyed words and trick them into casting a spell of your own devising, a spell that will change the order of the cosmos and grant power to the deserving and undeserving alike.

The golden ones are no longer amused, and you know that their vengeance will be terrible, but before it can befall you there are knives in the dark. The golden ones fall, all of them betrayed by those they ruled, and though you fall with them you cannot help but smile.

Is this not right, that the weak should overtake the strong? Is it not just, that the golden tyrants are brought low? Is it not a perfect world you will leave behind?

Then you awaken again, and the world is not perfect.

You live in a land ruled by cruel, rapacious dragons in the shape of men who take and take and take. You are again a golden being, but there are no peers here, no luminous monsters to show you the way. There is only an endless hunt by dragons seeking to smother your light, endless bloodshed as your homeland suffers under their rule.

You hate. You wish for a world where the dragons are overthrown, and in search of that dream you seek power. You find it in the form of a shining silver witch queen so savage and cruel even the dragons dare not disturb her.

"There is power in fear," she teaches you. "Master your foes, and you master the world."

And you do. You call the earth and the skies to do your bidding, laughing as your foes are devoured by winds like wolves, and your enemies are afraid. You call slaves from hell to be your army, wicked things sworn to your service, and they too fear you.

But the dragons are without number. Your armies are slaughtered, and soon you are fleeing again.

It is as you flee you are approached by a beautiful shadow with cloven feet and a face like heartbreak.

"Fool," says the shadow. "You make your enemies fear you, when you should make them love you. There is power in love unrequited, in the gift of a broken heart. Love is a weapon, a knife aimed at the soul. Wield it with skill and never let it touch your heart."

You follow the shadow's urging, and your spells grow mightier even as you turn the dragons to your side. They love you, and they fear you, and you hate them, and all is as it should be.

At last, you know power. At last, the strength of the dragons is spent, their reign collapsing as they squabble among themselves for your favor. At last, you have won.

Your victory does not last.

As you stand amidst the corpses of dragons, a shadow stretches across the skies, the earth boils and gives up its dead, the things that defy shape gnaw at the edges of the world and it is doom, doom, doom-!

You wake up in a cold sweat. What the fuck was that dream?

Groggily, you look over to your alarm clock and see that it's 5:02 am, just late enough that you can't justify going back to sleep. It's only afterwards that you realize you don't have your glasses on and yet you can read the clock just fine. Well, looks like your powers have fixed your eyes.

You sit up in bed and put your head in your hands. Seriously, what happened there? You think you had your powers in the dream but… different? There was some other power there too. And there were other people with powers, powers like yours as well as those dragon people, and the silver queen, and the shadow, and-

You stop. You take a breath, then you carefully try and go over the dream again, but already its slipping out of your mind like mist through your hands. All except for one part, one part which seems to resonate with your very soul.

[ ][Initiation] There is power in sacrifice (Initiation: Brigid's Sacrifice – Define a major intimacy of sacrifice, something you are giving up. "I forsake my father," "I will never know wealth," "I forswear all lies" are all valid examples. Whenever you meaningfully affirm this intimacy, you gain 3 Will)
-[ ] Write in sacrifice

[ ][Initiation] Hierarchies are to be abolished (Initiation: Salina's Humility – Whenever you spend a scene deliberately humbling yourself in service to those of lesser status and greater need, overturning the natural hierarchy of power, you gain 3 Will. Taylor will gain the minor intimacy "Hierarchies are meant to be abolished")

[ ][Initiation] There is an order to the cosmos (Initiation: Theanoan Method – As long as you're able to inscribe some element of the spell you're casting as a reflexive action, you gain 1 additional Will for every Focus Will action you take, to a maximum of 3 per arc. Taylor will gain the minor intimacy "There are secret truths to the world, and I will know them")

[ ][Initiation] Master your foes, and you master the world (Initiation: Raksi's Teachings – When a nontrivial character expresses fear of you, or upon success of an intimidation roll against them, gain 3 Will. Taylor will gain the minor intimacy "Fear is a tool")

[ ][Initiation] Love is a weapon (Initiation: Bargain with Mara – When a nontrivial character expresses unrequited love, admiration, or obsession for you, you gain 3 Will. Taylor will gain the minor intimacy "Love is a weapon")

You're initiating into sorcery, which means you can now cast spells. Spells are different from charms: they take Will instead of motes, with each spell costing a certain amount of Will to cast.

You may acquire Will in two ways. The first is your shaping ritual, given to you by your sorcerous initiation. Note that in an exception to the usual Exalted Essence rules, this is the only Will that can be banked from scene to scene. It is still lost at the end of the arc.

The second way you gain Will is by a Focus Will action: you roll any Attribute (probably Force in your case) + Sagacity at difficult 3. Succeeding gives you one Will, plus one extra Will for each extra success. You can hold 10 Will at once.

Additionally, initiating into sorcery is a big deal for you. It defines part of your outlook, the way in which you relate to power and certain fundamental truths you believe about the world. Choose carefully.

You look around in wide-eyed wonder. Something changed with that revelation. Everything looks the same, and yet, nothing does. Everything is different now in some indescribable way. You can feel it, the power now thrumming through the world. Or, no, not 'now', it was always there, you've just never paid attention to it before.

Something else sticks in your mind from the dream. You, the other you, the second one, had turned the very elements against her foes.

"Winds like wolves," you mutter.

You get out of bed, clear your mind, and concentrate. It seems a bit silly, trying to copy a dream, and yet you can't deny that that dream changed something. So you focus, drawing your will into a razor sharp point, calling into your mind an image of what you desire, of how it felt to conjure those wind-hounds in the dream, and then… you release it.

This would normally be where you make a focus Will roll. However, as there is no time pressure here, no danger, and nothing you're competing against, I'm skipping the rolls and just saying you can take as long as you like to gather your Will

You yelp as the release of power sends a tingle up your spine, but the effect is immediate. The winds stir, whipping across your room in a miniature cyclone that swiftly condenses into the shape of a very, very big wolf. It's about as big as a horse, which you know is way bigger than wolves are supposed to be.

You grin. This is a very useful… power…

Your grin turns to a frown. Something about that thought was wrong. This, what you just did, it felt like a skill you only just remembered you had, not the miraculous and inexplicable abilities of a parahuman. You'll have to examine that later; more and more strangeness just keeps cropping up around your powers.

Still, you have more pressing concerns. Namely this big dog, who is looking at you with its dopey eyes and its tongue lolling out despite being made out of wind.

"You need a name," you decide. "After all, you're a very good…" you trail off, briefly examine your new companion and, upon finding nothing to indicate in either direction, make an arbitrary decision. "Girl," you proclaim. "You're a very good girl, and your name is…"

[ ][Doggo name] Write in

You nod, satisfied. A good name for a good girl. Now to introduce her to your dad. That should be… interesting.

***

"Morning dad," you say cheerily as you descend the stairs a couple hours later, your canine companion in tow.

"Morning Tay – Jesus Christ!" he shouts as his eyes land on your new best friend. "Taylor what – just – don't scare me like that!"

You let out a giggle. You, giggling. How long has it been since you've last done that? Powers have done wonders for your mood, it seems. Or maybe it's the thought of seeing how your bullies react to said powers: if their reaction is anything like your dad's, you're in for a treat.

"Sorry dad, I wanted to surprise you," you say with a smile.

"Well consider me surprised," he says, shaking his head. There's no small amount of wonder in his tone. "How'd you get your new friend?"

"I made her," you say. "Figured out something new with my powers. Do you think I should bring her to school with me?" you ask cheekily. Your 'new friend' wags her tail and pants in agreement.

"Well, actually, I just got off the phone with the school," he says. "They want you to take the week off to recover."

You blink. A week away from school? You won't say no to that, especially when this is such a pivotal time for you.

"Sounds good to me," you say, absentmindedly scratching your dog behind the ears. "I had other things I wanted to get done today anyway."

"Like what?" asks your dad.

You list them off. "I want to see if the PRT has any information for aspiring young heroes, I want to test out my powers and figure out my limits, I want to study vigilante law, I want to research the Merchants, and-"

"Wait, the Merchants?" asks your dad. "Taylor, isn't that a gang? What do you need to research a gang for?"

"Because I'm going to be a hero," you tell your dad bluntly. "I'm going to fix this city."

Attempting to persuade Danny to let you be a hero.

Committing 1 mote to HPM, spending one mote on Cat's Puffed Tail, and forming a dice pool of Force + Presence + 2 stunt dice + Presence Excellency = 16 dice and 3 bonus successes.

Anima is 2/10, motes are 3/5, 1 committed.

Danny's Resolve is 2, bolstered by his minor intimacy of grief, penalized by his minor intimacy of "I can be better", so he remains at 2.

5 successes on 16 dice, 8 successes total, 6 extra successes.

Need to spend 2 successes on a tier 2 persuade because this is a major ask of him given the risk it poses to you, his only living family. You spend two more successes to strengthen the intimacy of "I can be better" to major and with 1 success instill a minor intimacy of "We can save Brockton Bay."

You have one success left over, which you really can't do much with at this point.

"And I'm going to help you," he says. The abrupt 180 from hesitancy to unwavering support would be jarring if you hadn't specifically been aiming for that.

Then you see him look slightly above your eyes.

"The forehead thing is back, isn't it?" you ask. He just nods, and you sigh. You think you're getting a handle on why the light show fluctuates, at least: the more you exert your powers, the glowier you get.

"So, being a superhero," says your dad. "What do you need from me?"

You grimace. This won't be easy for him. "I need a cellphone," you admit.

He goes still. A complicated series of emotions plays out across his face as he stares into the distance, ultimately ending in a sort of resigned acceptance. "Right, right, that makes sense. They're… useful, I suppose, if you need to contact the authorities or… it just makes sense. It does."

"Dad, thank you," you say earnestly. That snaps him back into focus, and he lets out a weary chuckle with a shake of his head.

"No need to thank me, Taylor, it's the smart thing to do," he says. "Anything else you need?"

"I was hoping to buy a body cam," you say. Your dad grins at that.

"Always prepared, that's my girl. What about a costume? And a name for that matter? And, uh, does the dog need a costume?"

You chuckle. "You don't need a costume, do you girl?" you ask. She barks agreeably. "And as for me, I've actually put some thought into this. I was thinking..."

You nod. "I won't."

"I know you won't," he says. "Now, I've really got to go," he says, getting up and moving out the door.

As he does, you glance back to your newly christened wind-wolf. You could send her with him to keep him safe, though that would be, uh, a little distracting for him and his coworkers probably. And what if you need her for hero work?

So....Taylor used to be a Solar who betrayed the others either before or during the great curse, Inadvertently helping the Scarlet Queen Rise up to power and letting the Dragonborn Rule. And then she Awoken again in Exalt proper. And then.....then....Something happened. Which most likely lead to the "Modern" day.

This means that she has A LOT of Solar Exalt enemies, maybe even some Abyssal Exalts as well considering how much time has passed. Possibly even Lunar ones, but that's a bit more doubtful.

It's a deep lore thing, one of her past incarnations was Salina, who manipulated the entire Solar Deliberative to basically alter the laws of Creation so that it became far easier for people to access sorcery.

Her following incarnation seems to have been a student of Raksi, the monstrous yet brilliant Lunar sorceress-queen, and then made a pact with Mara and brought down the Realm. Then, it sounds like the Ebon Dragon, Deathlords/Neverborn, and the Fae all jumped in and fucked up everything.

[X][Costume] Modern-ish:
-[X] but with more zenith colors
-[X] maybe baton(s) instead of swords (if we can ger some)
-[X] loads of pockets and maybe a basic aid kit later on when/if we get more money

[X][Initiation] Love is a weapon (Initiation: Bargain with Mara – When a nontrivial character expresses unrequited love, admiration, or obsession for you, you gain 3 Will. Taylor will gain the minor intimacy "Love is a weapon")

My reasoning:
  • While I am okay with taking Bargain with Mara, I do think that, at least in the beginning, we will help little people more as servants of the people. But I can see Taylor seeing her fans as resources in a symbiotic kind of way; by gathering the following, she can help them more
  • While Zenith would seem a natural cape name, it is a bit pretentious. Lux, on the other hand, is modern, short and catchy and has added bonus of maybe helping us make PRT see us as an unfortunate conflict of priorities and circumstances, not someone running wildly in search of [DATA]
  • Doggo, I think, will be better with us given that we will go for power testing and for our merchant hunting. Her help with smelling the drug dens and in fighting will be of great use. And at least for now, gangs are not very likely to target Danny because Taylor is a social thinker or master; getting her by threatening her Dad will end badly in a couple of weeks or months.
  • The costume itself is simple for a couple of reasons: 1. Taylor is poor and can't afford a lot more 2. We are a brute we can somewhat afford less protective clothes 3. Taylor is forced to be an open cape, which allows us a unique chance to show off our face, which makes us more personable/relatable 4. It is cool pic 5. It is down to earth, which can tell people: "Lux isn't like other capes, she is one of us and cares for the bay we should start a cult about her"

[X][Initiation] Hierarchies are to be abolished (Initiation: Salina's Humility – Whenever you spend a scene deliberately humbling yourself in service to those of lesser status and greater need, overturning the natural hierarchy of power, you gain 3 Will. Taylor will gain the minor intimacy "Hierarchies are meant to be abolished")
This fits neatly in with our current goals.

[X][Doggo Decision] Send your dog with your dad (in the future, I will assume you want your hound on protective detail unless you vote otherwise)
Danny needs a protection detail, and we can't count on the PRT.

That's all I've got for now, I'll check back in a bit.

[X][Initiation] Master your foes, and you master the world (Initiation: Raksi's Teachings – When a nontrivial character expresses fear of you, or upon success of an intimidation roll against them, gain 3 Will. Taylor will gain the minor intimacy "Fear is a tool")

Not sold on the humility thing for two reasons A) it would be inconvenient to do in all sorts of circumstances in which we need will and B) It would get tiresome to read. Fear is a tool... yeah we are going to scare a lot of people and when we scare them we will probably need will.

We can pull it when we need the transport and or bloodhound.
