As said before, Cob and Sirim are a surprisingly effective duo!

We want that favor for Gorok, so best to go to source.

I've never posted here before, but how big are the chests? what I'm saying is... could a Vampire be in one of those chests? be careful when opening.

Nice to see you. :)

As for the question, they would have to be packed in very tight, but technically... vampires are dead to the world during the day, not like they could get cramps so yeah there could be a humanoid vampire in the larger chest

Arc 7 Post 24: Mystery in Mirage
Mystery in Mirage

21st of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

The idea of going right to DeVorge with the chests still locked is greeted with skepticism by Sirim, who seems to have gained something of a poor impression of the fellow from tale and rumor gathered. "A dandy, influential, is useful set before the thing well done, but I would not trust him to hold up a table on Third Moonday."

"Hold up a table?" Mina asks, though given the answer she'd probably rather stayed silent. Third Moonday is a harvest festival hankering back to the centuries of Nidalese ancestors protected by their dread patron. The ceremonial tables for the occasion are made of human bones of community members from past generations.

You at least try not to snicker at the idea of not trusting someone's reliability as a table leg.

"He is an elder without years, a poli-ti-cian," Gorok sounds out the word carefully. "He will have others to advise against folly. Beside, it is unwise to judge a bird on its feathers alone when its beak and talons may yet be sharp."

Thus resolved you head out to meet with Eduarmot... that is to say row out. Anchored at the mouth of the Tamuth River, where it spills into the Androshen, is a vessel unlike any other. It is as though its builders had taken the body of a common river barge of the kind that ply the waterways here in Augustana, and piled atop it are the contents of several wheelwrights workshops, all gleaming brass but for the long steel tube, presently breathing white smoke into the powder-blue sky. She is called the Madox Mirage and you are very much afraid Cob is in love.

Gnomes dressed in every color of the world above, and some you might have preferred not to see, walk her decks while odd blue shelled beetlefolk move though her ratlines (beetlelines?) while on odd being, halfway between rodent and reptile, directs the crew, or at least motions in the direction of the generalized chaos. At least it's easy to pick out Eduarmot and his two aids just from the their height, and no one is liable to think to look here of all places in search any hypothetical arsonists who set a business in the Embassy District ablaze earlier that morning... at least not any intentional arsonists.

"What's he inspecting that for?" Mina asks, obviously not knowing what to call the vessel.

"Three day wonder," Sirim scoffs. "The ship sailed in unbidden yesterday, probably slipped through an impermanent portal from the First World. They seem like the sort to take insane chances until their luck runs out. I think he's offering to make 'The Magnificent Madox' an honorary citizen of Almas."

"Why?" you can hear more than confusion in Gorok's tone and you are not the only one.

But Sirim isn't one to boil string grubs to sweetness: "Because they make for pleasant-seeming marvels, greeted with flowers and smiling children."

The worst part of it all is how little it seems to surprise your scaled friend to hear it.

"I don't have flowers. Wanna see how it works," Cob cuts in eagerly.

"We're here to talk to DeVerge," Mina reminds him gently.

He pulls a face, but does not argue the point. After all, he's the one with the chests.

Thankfully the crew of the Mirage are welcoming for their part, an impression only slightly marred by the alarming hiss of fluid and creak of metal joints as the 'boarding ramp' lowers for the five of you to climb aboard. One of the fey even produces a bowl of milk for Pepper from somewhere.

So it is you come face to face with Eduarmot DeVerge in front of a large slow-turning wheel. The man himself is garbed almost as colorfully as the fey crew, though in less haphazard shades of blue, silver, and gold, that all the better match the bright smile he throws your way... well, Mina's way at least. He does not quite seem to know what to make of Gorok and he does not seem to have noticed you.

"I bring news of urgent import for Representative DeVerge" you glance at the nearest crewman. "Is there somewhere private we can speak?"

Thus you are all hustled into one of the cabins, if it is on the larger side of small you could not say, having more than enough trouble trying to make out the architecture of 'commonplace 'ships. Still, if one could replace the fickle wind with something more arcane that might be worth it. A thought for another time as now you turn to speak, not half lies, more like nine-tenths truth.

"Yesterday, we discovered quite without meaning to that the Eagle Knights had been investigating the disappearance of a young woman two weeks past and also came to guess by the posting of the watcher who lost this sketch..." you hand him the parchment, watching closely. The whole plan hinges on this man's care for his sister.

A complex interplay of emotions shapes his expression as water shapes the stone beneath it; anger, loss, sorrow, deep and abiding, then anger again, but not of the same sort, the blade turned inwards. Guilt. Words had been said that perhaps now cannot be unsaid.

"By senses arcane we had reasons to suspect a building of harboring unwholesome powers," you continue smoothly so we sent two of our numbers to reconnoiter the premises. "There we discovered..." Smoothly as though you were a mummer in a play you hand the sentence to Mina.

"A dark and unwholesome chalice." She motions to it, the look of disgust clear on her spell-scared, seemingly blind face. "Only the dead, only the vampyr, have reason to sup from such a thing. It keeps the blood warm. "

"We also recovered two chests that were found with the cup, but we did not wish to unseal them least we be mistaken for common thieves."

"A... adventurers then?" Eduarmot struggles for words, which not-so-incidentally means he would struggle even more to pick out the holes in your story.

Akorian Bluff & Sense Motive: 35, 32 (Double Critical Success!)

Together you open the chests to find several changes of clothes, from ones fit for the nobility to the kind of rough homespun a peasant down on her luck might wear. There is nothing commonplace about the brace of daggers, one of which is both magical and alchemically treated, or the two clinking bags in the back, perfumes and powders, one held coin, a decent, though not fantastical sum, the other silvery tipped bolts, some more finely made that the other.

Contents of the Chests
  • 5 Full changes of clothes meant to fit various personas
  • 4 Daggers
  • 1 Magical +1 Alchemical Silver Dagger
  • 2x Sorcerer's Spirits; 1x Mage's assistant; 4x Love in Idleness
  • Various perfumes, skin ointments and powders
  • Mirrors, combs and other accessories
  • 50 Crossbow Blots
  • 25 Alchemical Silver Crossbow bolts
  • 10 Mithril bolt
  • 650 gc
"If she's carrying a mirror, this Breolia can't be a vampire?" Eduarmot says, not yet with suspicion, but you fear that too might come. "In fact it looks more like you'd expect to find in the bags of a vampire hunter."

"Or a diabolist with enough wit to keep weapons able to cut baatezu at hand," Sirim informs you silently.

Dangerous ground that, connections to Cheliax are more likely than any other to lead to the Aspis Consortium in whose employ you still are.

What do you do?

[] Bring up the possibility of Breolia being a diabolist, explain you noticed an imp inside the premises while also doing your best not to mention what you were doing there (Opposed Bluff Sense Motive check)

[] Point out that just because someone means ill to the undead it does not mean they are a good person (Sirim Diplomacy -5 Penalty for being a smokeshade)

Darklands Dictionary

To boil string grubs to sweetness - to make something palatable at the expense of substance. String grubs are a common wild staples of Nar Voth, which have an unpleasant astringent taste. Boiling them removes the taste, but also makes them far less filling

Huh...what are the chances that Breolia is actually a Vampire hunter? I mean, it's possible, if somewhat unlikely. Seems more plausible that she either has a Vampire enemy or is allies with one or more and wishes to be prepared to fight them if necessary.

Alternatively, the weapons aren't intended for dealing with Vampires but rather Lycanthropes.

I can just imagine Cob right now. He's probably practically vibrating in place with eagerness to explore this strange Fey ship.

@DragonParadox, do we get to keep the loot? Eduarmot didn't seem particularly interested in anything we found.

We've come this far, so we might as well keep the ball rolling.

If they detain her, wouldn't they notice the imps anyway?

We could bring up the excess of blood we found on the premises, without mentioning that she is a diabolist making sacrifices, but wouldn't it lead to the same outcome?
So up the stairs he scampered only to plop into a laundry basket when one of the servants passed by. Luckily it was nicely goblin-sized, a good place to plan their next move. Wait, what was that though? A familiar smell flooded his nostrils and he had to remind himself not to chew. Blood. Some of the sheets were covered in blood. Lots and lots of it.

"Being careless about sacrifices is she?" Sirim-snake hissed. "One advantage of running a laundry I suppose, but still no excuse to be careless."

Ultimately yes, but the expedition leaves in three days and the authorities tend to react much more firmly to hints of diabolism than just too much blood on the premises, search for contacts that could uncover Gavhaul. On the other hand the same is true in both directions, they are more likely to investigate quickly if you mention devils. If you want to take the risk is up to the vote.

Okay, so we don't have evidence of Eleonora's whereabouts, but whatever we have is enough for Eagle Knights to ransack the house. This would likely jeopardize our mission, especially if Briolia spots us. This would bring up our earlier visit, and from there, Gavhaul's involvement. Even if we avoid that, if her house contains evidence of her dealings with the Consortium, our mission may become that much more difficult.

We might want to proceed quietly, without bringing the administrative hammer on the heads of the guilty.

I think if we bring up the possibility of Eleonora being held up by a suspicious person with too-much-blood on premises, and make Eduarmot treat it as a hostage situation, we might avoid the immediate publicity.
We would also be expected to bring her back alive, or at least to produce some hard evidence of her fate.

The question is, can he do anything to help us deal with it discreetly?

Sadly not the really incriminating evidence we were hoping for...

So, we got nothing?

That content isn't exactly suspicious in any way, why would people believe us when we accuse an upstanding citizen of anything?

I admit, I didn't pay too much attention for the last few chapters, why are we even trying to pin something on this person, why did we break into her house?

The Expedition will move on, so I'm not seeing the point.

It wasn't really the smoking gun we were hoping for. We're in this deep, however, so we need to carry through with it or the effort will have been wasted and the opportunity lost.

I mean, why do we want to hang something on this person, even if it seems to come at a risk of hindering our own expedition with the investigations?

Wouldn't it be better to back off?

If we can help find the girl, it's the best chance we have to earn the favor needed to allow Gorok's people to relocate to Andoran. The longer that takes, the more likely complications will arise in their exodus from Cheliax.

Arc 7 Post 25: With a Hidden Hand
With a Hidden Hand

21st of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

"More than mortal ills fill that house," you proclaim darkly. "Imps scamper unseen across its face like..." What parasites do the Burnlands even have? you scramble mentally to find one. "Leeches on a horse," you finally settle on. "No one of good standing would invoke such company, but if the things meant the lady ill her fortunes do not show it."

Eduarmot DeVorge's bunt-clay brown eyes widen in shock for just a moment before narrowing in thought. "Strange that you would know so much, being independent contractors and, if I might be so bold as to say, not from our fair shores."

"Travel far enough over the world or under it and you learn to be weary of devils tails pocking about," you do your best to sound more certain than you are.

"And have you seen many devils over the years?" Alas the line of questioning still draws closer and closer to dangerous waters. Who is the fish and who the fisherman? After a moment, too short for you to answer he continues. "I spend some years sailing the Inner Sea you know, a captain ye even to Westcrown and Ostenso and even there you did not see imps flitting about with naught but a glamor between them and prying eyes. Many are the eyes that can see through that, priest, wizard and bard. Either they'd show themselves openly, the better to discomfit the populace and foreign merchants alike, or they would take some shape or rat, bat, bird or some other common creature. Why there are even legends in Westcrown of an imp overfond of drink who takes the shape of a pigeon to slip in through unlocked windows and drink whole barrels of beer dry." Though he says it all with a charming smile it's obvious that with the first blush of shock gone he's focused on just who the currents of chance had swept before him and what you might be after.

Passing the Sniff Test Bluff vs Sense Motive: 29 vs 35 (Failure)

"We have seen imps inside," you repeat slowly. "No doubt as to what they are."

"Ahh..." he pauses delicately, side-eyeing Cob oddly enough. "Perhaps after you decided to 'reconnoiter'?"

Not the worst conclusion for him to jump to, it would not be far past believing that in Almas at least even thieves raise hue and cry when they spot a devil should they recognize it. "Does it really matter when we saw them?"

"Hmm..." he looks down at the contents of the chests then starts doing a slow turn around the room. "I suppose not. Tell me good sirs and madam, do you know what a deniable asset is?"

"Yes," Gorok interrupts, his mind likely going back to the Forester's Endowment and the tomb of Ergriso Vaylen.

"I am not sure you know this, but there is all manner of red tape involved in raiding a building in the Embassy Quarter unless one can prove the owner is actively keeping slaves..." he pauses expectantly, but you shake your head.

"Not unless the imps count," Mina adds.

"What an odd thing to say," Eduarmot shakes his head then sits down in a chair, the wrong way around. He speaks, but it seems to be more to himself than to you. "Time is of the essence with kidnappings, that is what they all say, the odds halve every five days., it's been almost a full month and this is the first lead that's more than empty words." Then his eyes snap up, filled with a new resolve. "I want you to go in there put a fucking black bag over the witch's head and get her to me so I can question her about my sister's whereabouts. If she is half as guilty as you say she is I can make sure she comes before a judge who is not going pay undue attention to her 'slanderous' words."

"And in return?" Gorok asks.

"Gold if you wish it, unless you want to get paid in stock, I can arrange that as well. Perhaps amnesty for past transgressions if you have need of it...?"

"Words with weight in the scales of the... Office of Land Management," the iruxi interrupts sharply. None of you are going to go against him of course.

Though he seems surprised, Eduarmot isn't outwardly displeased at the offer.

"You realize, of course, that he could make all of us take the fall for him," Sirim cuts in silently.

"Then we would talk about being hired to 'black bag' Lady Breolis, that sounded like a technical term. Much more of a issue for his reputation to be known to have done that," you retort, noting the shadow mage had said 'we' not 'you' despite the fact that as Mina's supposed familiar he likely would not be locked up, if anyone could even catch him to begin with.

How do you plan to kidnap your target?

[] Break in tonight, you know where her bedroom is, just come through the window

OOC: This means a lot of Gorok, after all this effort there is no way he's not taking the plunge and he is the leader so you guys do not get to vote on if you are doing this just how. I know it's less player agency than you could have, but that is how it turned out with everyone's motivations and past choices.
