Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

I can finally make a reponse properly:

Bushes, you soon discover, make startlingly good, if somewhat prickly, cover. Though by the time you and Gorok had made your selves comfortable Cob had gone to ground like a ghost and Mina is headed for the dwelling place. Her form ripples as if the gentle wind made colors flow and she was... not much different. Still in rugged leathers, though of another sort of make, the grey of her eyes changed to brown that to you looks just as alien as her normal seeming must to these Burnlanders, and the proportions of her face shifted. Why, you wonder for a moment, and then recall that you might be followed.

Mina is intelligent and we are being clever, I like it.

One knock, two, then the door is opened by a man who brings meaning to new-learned phrases, sun-beaten and weather-worn. In truth he must have been beaten by more material things in his vanished youth at least, that or he had fallen down a twenty foot slope and taken every rock with his face on the way down.

This made me smile. I get the same feeling when I see someone who does hard work outside.

Location Discovered: Outskirts of Longacre, Archduchy of the Heartlands Cheliax

Link is broken, but I can comment this: we are in the middle of Cheliax, we just got out of Whisperwood, and if we don't get someone to vouch for us up here we might be better on the Darklands. At least there the Mongrelmen accept everybody. Damned Devil-fucking bigots.

I hope next update Pepper tells us the species of the baby.

Meanhile, I will vote to investigate.

[X] We'll make our way to Longacre and attempt to learn the lay of the land before deciding on a course of action, especially whether we can risk entering the town or if we'll need to figure out some other way to safely drop off Click.

We should overthrow tyranny of Devils!
When we receive a high level. A very, very, very high level. :V
Untill then Darklands seems like a more safer place.

Arc 3 Post 14: At the Old Gates
At the Old Gates

Season of Rushing Waters

The hills and woodlands are shaped as the hall long dwelt within might be shaped by the chisel of its people; dirt turned over from which emerge at odd angles, a root here, a stone there glowing in the moonlight as the sun has set well before it might restore its searing gaze to the world above. No place for Warty this, Mina had made clear. The farmers might not notice you, blind like all their kin, but they would sure notice a slurk trampling their fields. So Gorok is left behind with him while the rest of you, five counting the mercifully sleeping infant, make your way towards the town as quiet and secretly as you are able.

The most danger you had been in of being spotted, if you could call it that, was from a troupe of 'men at arms' who came thundering down the road towards the east gate, armed certainly... with torches to ruin what feeble night sight they may have and the clank of metal on metal fit to march an ironguard of dwarfs without one tenth the menace. For one thing the things they were riding seemed for all their size to be damn fragile on those long legs of theirs. Were 'horses' really the best they could do?

Stealth Rolls: 29, 40, 22 (Success vs opposed 7)

Still, it was on this occasion that Pepper, discontent with flattening himself on the cold ground, jumped up on his mistress' shoulder and took a long sniff of the infant in her arms...

Pepper Knowledge (Planes): 1d20+5 = 13 (Failure)

Alas, he does not have anymore of a clue than she does of its origins, unless it is about the need to change his... wrappings. None of you had handled infants before, so such things are rather beyond your collective skills, with Mina having only volunteered herself as his keeper because her face was likely to be the least troubling.

Either way you make it near enough the gate... and near enough to see the wall is not half as sturdy as it presents itself from afar, that Mina can once more set off to hand the infant over to someone more skilled in dealing with it than any of you. Shouldn't be hard, the cat is probably tied for the position. Your breath catches in your throat as she walks into the shadow of the old rickety gatehouse, but just as swiftly she returns, Click still in arms.

Mina diplomacy: 1d20+1+1 (Guidance) = 19 (Success)

"The guards said the local noble, Archbaron Darellus Fex, is looking for some kind of lost baby. That was the news those knights brought, said something about it being kidnapped by fairies..."

"And that is bad because?" you ask, catching the fear in her tone without understating it. After all, if Click is a noble child surely he would do well with some kind of noble if they want it.

"Because he's a devil worshiper, a Thrune Loyalist, and worse! His people spit behind his back at talk of his name and they'd spit him in the face if they dared. Lazy, they call him that because he has a lazy eye, not for any other reason. The guard told me all this so I could get away 'cause he wants to spite the archbaron."

"Arch...baron give... gives no reward?" Cob asks, somehow getting the unfamiliar word out.

"No, I think he expects to be obeyed out of fear," Mina says grimly

"Stupid," Cob proclaims definitively.

"Anyway," Mina continues. "The news about the baby must have been really important to send men-at-arms down to town in the middle of the night. Fex does not like to be reminded that he rules such a poor estate as Longacre and he prefers to keep what men-at-arms he has close to hand for his own prestige. The guard said 'hellhounds ran in his dreams'. I think that was just an expression." She sounds like she was hoping for reassurance that does not come. What do you or Cob know about devil-hounds?

"The gate guard would not take he baby to the temple with the men-at-arms around stirring everything up, but he said that if he somehow ended up there that Sword Knight Allamar, that's the name of the priest, wouldn't let any thugs into her church and she'd have some way to smuggle the baby out.... he thought... if that's not just a rumor."

She sighs, though by contrast Cob looks invigorated. "Sneak baby in?"

"Either that or we wait for the morrow and hope the Sword Knight comes out to take him."

What do you do?

[] Have Cob Sneak the baby in

[] Hide in the outskirts until morning when the priestess of Iomedae can come to you as part of her usual rounds of the tannery and the farms

[] Probably safer to take the baby with you back down below

[] Write in

OOC: Alas, as you have guessed, there are people looking for the baby. Thankfully, at least so far, they are people with only Perception +2.

We underdarkers are clearly the superior species

I say that we wait until tomorrow. The priest is likely to tolerate our group and we could use a surface contact here.

I mean in terms of riding mounts at least you have the surface dwellers beat. I mean who would choose something that can die from drinking water wrong/too much over a giant spider or centipede that will live off lichen and underdark radiation? :V

Yeah, and look at their bad eyesight. Who needs light to be able to actually see? This surface thing surely breeds a lot of soft babies.

In other news, @DragonParadox , Pepper should have changed evolutions to be able to put +8 to his knowledge planes check this turn.

You are right, a racial bonus would stack.

Looking back it does not seem to have been voted for though.

Fair enough, that was a my bad thing.

@Goldfish , we need some standing orders about which skill to put into Pepper then. Dungeoneering while on the Darklands, Nature while on wild territory on the surface, something for the cities.

Right now we should change to planes though.

Sorry, wanted to reply this morning but I couldn't find the time. Started a new job this week and I had to spend most of the day in meetings. Yay...

Okay, so not only are asshole nobles involved, but they're Thrune loyalists, which basically means Devil puppets. Definitely don't want to get involved with these folks in any way if we can avoid it. Even sticking around the outskirts of town for daybreak is too long, IMO.

And even the possibility of Fey involvement makes my skin crawl. They can be worse than Devils in many circumstances.

[X] Have Cob Sneak the baby in
-[X] Mina will cast her Hermean Potential spell on Cob to aid his Stealth checks, plus she will use her Pass Without Trace SLA on him and the baby before he sets out. Additionally, she'll cast Sleep on the baby to keep it as docile as possible to make things easier for Cob. The Hermean Potential and Sleep spells won't last long, but they should be helpful for the most difficult part of the mission, getting the baby inside the town and to the temple.
--[X] We'll also arrange a signal Cob can try to give us, such as a bird call or something else easily recognizable but not overly suspicious, which will indicate he needs a distraction. If given, Mina will use her Dancing Lights SLA to draw attention outside the walls, and if that isn't enough, she will use charges from her staff to use the Ghost Sound and Silent Image spells for something even more noteworthy.
-[X] Next time Mina sleeps, she'll change Pepper's Evolution bonus to +8 Knowledge(The Planes), since we're in Cheliax (aka Devil territory).

Sending Cob seems tempting, but in those (not-very-likely) occasion of his failure we can compleatly loose him. Betting on priests visit seems more sefer option for me.

@Goldfish could Pepper go with Cob to act as backup? I mean, they are a cat so sneaky on their own and no one is likely to look twice at them.

Allright. Time to make a proper response now:

The hills and woodlands are shaped as the hall long dwelt within might be shaped by the chisel of its people, dirt turned over from which emerge at odd angles, a root here, a stone there glowing in the moonlight as the sun has yet bells before it might restore its searing gaze to the world above. *Sad Warty noises*

Hang on, slimy friend. We will go back to you soon

The most danger you had been in of being spotted, if you could call it that was from a troupe of 'men at arms' who came thundering down the road towards the east gate armed certainly... with torches to ruin what feeble night sight they may have and the clank of mental on metal fit to march an ironguard of dwarfs without one tenth the menace. Fortunately, we are insanely good at stealth, and night is our element. I wanna get a darkness spell for Kori as soon as we level up.

"The guards said the local noble, Archbaron Darellus Fex, is looking for some kind of lost baby, that was the news those knights brought, said something about it being kidnapped by fairies..."

"And that is bad because?" you ask, catching the fear in her tone without understating it. After all if Click is a noble child surely he would do well with some kind of noble if they want it.

Look, he is an asshole among assholes. By Cheliax standards. It kinda deserves an award

"Arch...baron give... gives no reward?" Cob asks somehow getting the unfamiliar word out.

"No, I think he expects to be obeyed out of fear," Mina says grimly

"Stupid," Cob proclaims definitively.

Cob speaks our language. He would fit with Viserys right away.

"Anyway," Mina continues. "The news about the baby must have been really important to send men at arms down to town in the middle of the night. Fex does not like to be reminded that he rules such a poor estate as Longacre and he prefers to keep what men at arms he has close to hand for his own prestige. I correct myself. We are talking about a butthurt asshole. Lovely

"Gate guard would not take he baby to the temple with the men at arms around stirring everything up, but he said that if he somehow ended up there Sword Knight Allamar, that's the name of the priest, wouldn't let any thugs into her church and she'd have some way to smuggle the baby out.... he thought... if that's not just a rumor."

Iomedae is a nice goddess. She might be the only opportunity we have of making any kind of useful contact here on the surface. I mean, we are gribblies that came and handed a healthy baby to her. This is like a backwards tale. She might help us get our bearings here.

One of the reasons I would like to make contact with her is because we need access to surface goods. I mean, Kori needs sunglasses, both he and Mina need better clothes to fit in (and blend if necessary), and everybody needs a goddamn tent. Really.

So I wanna contact the priest.

Also, @Goldfish , congratulations on your new job! I hope everything is allright there.

Fortunately, we are insanely good at stealth, and night is our element. I wanna get a darkness spell for Kori as soon as we level up.
Kori's next level up is going to be so good.

On top of learning Invisibility as a bonus spell, his Dark Secrets Revelation will let him learn another eligible spell of 2nd level, so he will be able to learn Darkness, too. Between those two spells, our group's stealth and combat potential is going to see a huge increase.
Also, @Goldfish , congratulations on your new job! I hope everything is allright there.
Thanks!, It's actually pretty great. I basically got headhunted to work for a new company. More money and a lot more opportunities for growth than my old company, but the next few months are going to be incredibly busy.
