It was the perfect plan really. All they had to do was follow along. Things would have worked out fine. Her parents would be back together, happy again. Things were going to be… Why… Why didn't it work?
— — —
Her parents were arguing again. It kept happening. Something was going wrong somewhere, things weren't perfect, maybe they just wanted to blame anything and everything on the other. It just kept happening. Screaming, arguments, blame being tossed back and forth and back and forth and then things were being thrown again. Missy couldn't understand why. They were so happy before, all smiles and cheerful voices. What went wrong? Why were they so upset? Things weren't that bad. It was just an unwashed dish here, a failed camping trip there, why were they fighting over these things?
Then it got worse. Her dad got cancer, screaming and fighting, complaining about the bills, the expenses, insults thrown and,
"Why should
I have to pay for your ungrateful ass! You barely do anything around this house!"
and,
"You backstabbing bitch! I should have known you were cheating on me! "
and,
"This marriage has been awful for a long, long time because of you! Where the hell were you on our anniversary for the last 5 years?!"
and,
"You couldn't even take care of my own daughter, why the hell should you even own those dogs?! You goddamn psychopath stop blaming this on me! Of course I gave them to good owners, unlike
you!"
and it just kept getting
worse.
Missy couldn't take it anymore, she had to do something, everything was falling apart, they couldn't last much longer like this.
So she came up with a brilliant idea.

Operation: Happy Family is a go!
It was the perfect plan really, nothing could go wrong. Things were going to be better after this. They had to be.
Step 1: Get Mom and Dad out of the house first! Separately.
Things were going well at first, Missy went up to Mom and asked her for some construction paper, for some arts and crafts. And since there was no paper in the house because she hid it all ahead of time, Mom went out to the store to get some. Just as planned!
Dad was… well… he wasn't feeling good today but the plan needed to be done as soon as possible! So Missy grabbed her packed backpack, and looked up at him with her best puppy eyes and in her most earnest voice asked to go to the park, and that was that.
Step 1: Success!
Initiating Step 2!
Step 2: To The Park!
The store Mom was getting paper at was right next to the park, so obviously Missy timed things
just right so by the time she and Dad were at the park, her Mom would be stepping out of the store.
"Hey Dad, can I go play for a bit? Pretty please with a cherry on top?"
"Huh? Well okay sweetheart, just don't get too far, I'm not irresponsible
unlike your mother."
Missy ignored that, sure her parents were still upset at each other but everything would be better after this! Running over to her mom who had construction paper in tow, she quickly grabbed her hand and,
"Hi Mom! C'mon let's go to the park real quick!"
"M-Missy? What the
hell-uh, heck are you doing out here? Why are you out here all by yourself? Where in the world is your father,
I swear that irresponsible hypocrite yells at me and then he-"
"Don't worry about it Mom! Dad's just over there!"
And dragging her confused and furious mother over to her father, Missy took out the blanket she had packed in her backpack and-
Voila!
Step 3: Picnic Time!
She placed a red and white checkered picnic blanket she stole off of the dining table, complete with some snacks she took from the fridge. The day was beautiful, perfect for a happy family picnic where her parents would realize that they truly loved each other deep down, and kissed and made up and stuff and then they could all go back to-
"What the hell are
you doing here?"
"Excuse
me? What the hell are
you doing here? I knew you were a terrible father but just letting my daughter run off like that on her own? How could you!"
"I'll have you know I was keeping an eye on Missy the whole time! She wanted
me to go to the park with her, not
you, why the hell are you barging in now? You call me a terrible parent but I'm not the one cheating here!"
"You're bringing this up again? That was your fault, each and every time, I set up everything nice for our anniversary and what do you do? Never show up, that's what!"
On, and on, and on, it went. They were getting louder, and louder, voices shrill and hoarse as they screamed and spat, shrieking out verbal abuse, desperate to show that they're in the right. People were staring.
They didn't even look at Missy or the little picnic she set up for them or how she was crying, hands clutched over her ears, tears rolling down her face as she watched it all fall apart. Again, and again, and again. They kept arguing, the voices getting louder and louder and why wouldn't it work why were they so angry why couldn't things be better why couldn't they see her hurting see themselves hurting as they fought and fought and fought and why wouldn't it work why why why whywhywhywhywhywhyWHYWHYWHYWHYWHYWHY WHY COULDN'T THINGS JUST-
Oh? Why hello there small one. You seem to be in quite the predicament.
A strange, soft voice spoke into her head. The world around her had seemed to fade away. Her surroundings seemed to change into a smoky, foggy, dark forest.
How ungrateful of those two, you've gone through all this effort to make things better and what do they do? Throw it in your face and ignore all you've done for them?
What? N-no, they were just… they just weren't feeling well today it was Missy's fault she should have done this later and, and-
If they had just kept quiet and gone along things would be better, no? You planned all of this out, and if they had just played along and done everything they were supposed to do, everything would have worked, right?
N-no? Yes? Maybe? Missy didn't know. The… The voice wasn't wrong exactly, right? If they had just done what they were supposed to, if they had just been happy to see each other for once, if they had just looked at everything Missy had done and felt proud or happy and stopped fighting… Surely they would be a happy family again. Right?
Ah, well, you see, I rarely deign to speak to humans. You should consider this an honor. All that have joined me have achieved great wealth and fame. Just put your trust in me and I'll gladly help you out.
Help? Help with what? For fame and glory? Riches beyond measure? She didn't want anything to do with that, Missy just wanted her family back, she just wanted these scowling, mean voiced strangers to go away, for her warm-hearted, kind parents back. Right?
Rarely does a human know what they want. Don't worry, everything will fall in place quite nicely if you accept. I could grant you anything in the world with enough time, don't you wish for this capability too?
Anything in the world? That can't be true, right? But Missy wanted it to be the truth, so, so very badly. Because if it was, everything could be put right again, surely?
We are quite alike in the end, yes? Two poor souls helping others for no cost in return, only to have it flung in our face as they reject it for no reason but spite. I'm sure we'll get along well in the future. Thank you for your agreement by the way, don't worry, I'll give you the power to put everything right again.

Missy blinked and shook her head slightly, as if waking up from a dream. She was back in her room, her wrist aching. One of her parents must have dragged her all the way here when they were done arguing. Ah, never mind, she could hear them yelling again. She looked down at her hands, and for the briefest moment, swore she could see a faint green light twirl around her fingers.
That strange voice was right. It looked like she might actually have powers now. That made her a cape, right? But, but her plan had failed, and she could still hear her parents arguing in the background. What was she supposed to do now?
[ ] Leave the house. You can't think with them yelling in the background.
[ ] Stay for now, and try to think of something to do later. Maybe you could test out your new powers?
[ ] Write-In?
