Son of Death (30k Mortarion Quest)

[x] The Unbroken Few. The seven comrades who stood with him against Necare, last survivors of a brotherhood chosen for their lack of remaining ties as much as their quality.

[X] A Grim Reprise. Mortarion shall hold his own funeral, and that of all who follow him. Barbarus shall mourn the deaths of those who go to the stars, but they shall also be proud, for it will be a worthy end indeed.

[X] The Dauntless Host. Every man and woman who called themselves Death Guard will have a place by his side, if they wish to claim it.
[X]Let the Past Bear Fruit: No ceremonies, no. No grand speeches. But before each warrior leaves, they plant a tree as a memory, and take a seed of the same to bring with them. Lest they forget their past.

[X] A Thief in the Night. There will be no grand ceremony, no pointless festivities or flowery speeches. Let his deeds be his legacy, nothing more or less.

There's a lot of cool imagery to be had in a symbolic death, especially if it's a communal funeral for a few people. Specifically thinking something a lot like this:

Who would laugh with Mortarion, so grim and terrible? Who would invite you into their hearth save out of harshest obligation?

Something tells me that Mortarion is being entirely too low on himself. Wow, even in this happier timeline he is rather prone to self-loathing.

I quite like this. Nice symbolism.

I can see this Mortarion maybe having an issue with his canon role of exterminator. He would probably want to leave the worlds he invaded at least capable of supporting life and recovering.

He really need close confidantes more than a larger group of followers. He'll have plenty of those from the legion.

As for the way to leave, the funeral is very metal but he's grim enough as it is, and the farmer angle is great. I also really like trees as something the people who stay can go back to as mementos of the people who are away.

Yeah I could see rebuilding before you leave being standard practice for his legion. Or at least planting the seeds of it.

Looking at it, I think the Emperor would have proven a point against Mortarion no matter what we chose.

Companions? Mortarion, irregardless of the farmer vote, has been set to work alone and would have to look at all those people following him willingly. Endurance? Probably just insight that whatever he achieved would have been topped by the Emperor. We saw humility.

It probably would have led to similar outcomes. Same with laws and philosophy. This was likely done to show Mortarion's own weaknesses in regards to failures and his own hypocrisy. It's also important to take away the positive parts. Mortarion does have goals he wishes to achieve and there are those who are not just willing to stand beside him, but who he is willing to stand beside. At least that's my reasoning for why I go with the Unbroken Few. Who knows. Maybe they will become the unbroken many sometime in the future.

Rather focus on that. No point in moping.

The more the better and what is dead can not die.

Yeah. I feel like at least part of the point of this quest is to drag Mortarion out of his mopey tendencies.

Mortarion is going to need family if he's gonna make it. Taking a bunch of people to the Crusade may isolate him from his legion, once he's reunited. I think taking a select few will provide a balance between existing comradery and opportunity to form new connections.

[X] The Unbroken Few. The seven comrades who stood with him against Necare, last survivors of a brotherhood chosen for their lack of remaining ties as much as their quality.

Maintaining connections to Barbarus is also important, I think. It's clearly very important to Mortarion's identity and just disappearing is going to fray that link to his semi-humanity.

^this write-in also slaps.

I have been persuaded.

I also like that we can see some more flaws of Big E here. After seeing his son's terraforming project he went "Oh thats neat, I'll have my boys take some notes on your work for when they take over"

Whereas if he offered Morty the use of the imperiums technology to complete his work. Morty would probably be more receptive as the terraforming of the planet would still be his gift to the people.

The faithful confidants that Mortarion will need in the coming tribulations, He's going to need some actual friends (or the closest a Primarch can get to friendship)

I like the symbolism of this alot, it feels like an acceptance that you and your brothers in arms are going to die, likely in a very horrible and messy manner, but you'll be fighting for something that will live on and grow long after you have passed away, it'll give each aspirant space-marine a legacy, whether they succeed or fail. They'll be remembered, they'd have helped to turn Barbarus green with life again. And maybe, maybe they'll do the same with other worlds once the ash finally settles.

That is our legacy, so it is written.
