Son of Death (30k Mortarion Quest)

[X] Camaraderie. It was mortal men that scaled the peaks of Barbarus and followed Mortarion into battle. What manner of men have followed the Emperor to this star?

We've already seen this planet's camaraderie on display; before, during, and after the people of Barbarus succeeded in destroying their final Overlord. Seen how everyone was willing to sacrifice their lives for another's, how Mortarion was treated as one of them for all that he was their leader in that campaign.

I'd like to see how the Emperor and his soldiers stack up. Because while they may have greatly advanced gear, bodies hardened by science and experience alike, the knowledge and resources of untold worlds at their call... I'm not actually sure they can.

Not in the ways Mortarion really cares about, at least - the men may well be incredibly loyal, but look beyond that and what are they loyal to? A brother in arms that has earned their trust, or some lofty ideal personified in a stranger that they must obey? A leader that would mourn their subordinates' passing for all its necessity, or someone who commands uncountable numbers yet remains just as isolated as the Overlords on their dreadful mountains?

And, honestly... I'm quite interested in watching where the story progresses from that shortcoming.

If people are right about the emperor being able to pass any of Mortarion's tests then I'd like for him to value a quality he can actually exhibit. If people are wrong then I'd rather not give the emperor an easy test. Being an average worker for one day to gain a primarch and a planet is quite possibly the lowest bar you can clear, and I'd rather get a good look at what/who Emps has following him.

So, the Emperor will likely ace the Resilience test. I am not sure how well he will do with Humility, but I suppose he will succeed, he's smart enough and psychically powerful enough that he will probably sense what Mortarion is looking for and do it without complaint.

Cameraderie is... interesting. While I have no doubt that all of the men that follow the Emperor will sing his praises, the Custodes are a different case. A lot of the more recent lore has portrayed them as basically hollow flesh automatons - the Emperor took something ethereal from them and all their ingrained brilliance, loyalty and charisma can not disguise it to those with the eyes to see. I think this option will leave Mortarion with the biggest questions in regards to the Emperors intentions.

[X] Humility. The Emperor may wage war on the stars and rule over billions, but has he ever laboured for his bread?

Maybe I'm looking at the prompt wrong, but it's more of a personality test than that. It's not about whether Big E knows how to farm and bake. It's whether he can be a normal person in a rural community.

Truth be told I expect the Emperor to pass any test Mortarion could name
So that isn't the point of the vote to me

I care more for what the test says about Mortarion himself, that this is the measure by which he would judge Emps
And on that front, the Mortarion who won the war for Barbarus and was hailed a hero... chose to be a simple farmer
He set down the role of a warrior and leader of men, and devoted himself to planting new life in the hopes that he might grow a better future for his people
Leaching toxins from the earth and building an ecosystem that one day might make a better world, that future generations will not have to know the harshness that their forebearers lived in
It speaks to me that Mortarion may take up the mantle of being the one people look to in times of crisis to lead them, but it is in his bones not to be the shining hero, but the humble labourer who seeks a better tomorrow, to feed the hungry, to aid the sick

Resilience, Humility and Camaraderie are all traits that the really great military leaders have. Not the most famous one, the greatest ones.

As such I expect the Emperor to have each of those traits in enough of an amount to ace any test we give him, there is a reason he only lost to Russ in eating and drinking when he was doing the tests, so all that is left is to pick a test that helps Mortarion and Resilience is what got him into Chaos Primarch territory in canon, humility is described in fake terms, what difference does it make if the Emperor has worked for his bread or not so long as he is someone who will do the necessary work? and it is the comrades/company one keeps that speak the loudest on what sort of person one is.

And even that is a flawed measuring stick at best. Still I want Mortarion to value the bonds between people more than I want him to be humble.

Eeeeeeh

I see it as Mortarion taking it in part because it's a huge difficult undertaking and he gets off on doing really long hard arduous difficult tasks.
