We are going to have to explain why we were on the bridge of the flagship at some point. That means we will either need to lie, mislead or admit being minor nobility.

As a fun bonus, revealing a prop means you get to have the prop in your hands without taking any additional steps

by revealing the prop, it is placed in the field, but is not claimed by anyone)

I am confused. What dies having the prop in hand mean?

At first I thought it was claiming, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Or is this a PC only thing.

‐----------

Anyway, to have a bit if diversity in plans.

-[x] Plan Angel Moon
--[x] Claim Adora's full story : Ajora reveals who she really is, and why she really was on the flagship
--[x] Reveal : The treaty : Ajora explains the treaty, and how the emperor aimed to use her to legitimize it under imperial and galactic law
--[x] Reveal : Angel Moon heritage : Ajora unintentionally reveals that she grew up on the Angel Moon, a symbol so central to the Kushan they put it on their flag.

Having a prop claimed means you are narratively interlinked with it - it's a thing that is true about you. Actors don't get to claim props they reveal because they act more and have less impunity than PCs (having no skill checks.)

They also have a special move PCs don't have called "stash" which lets them foist explicitly negative props in your hand - this is for planting evidence, giving you bad terrain to fight in, making you sick, whatever!

Also your plans good! Definitely going to have some environmental bonuses for tapping into Kushan cultural cache.

[X] Plan Establishing Worth

I like the plan.

Though Emilia is definitely gonna fight us over "Ajora's Full Story" and revealing "Taiidani Fleet Motivation: Hide information from Imperial Intelligence" is probably going to provide her room to drill down and uncover our connections to Taiidani Intelligence. Even if we think we are keeping our full connections hidden, advantage is with the interrogator in a situation like this.

  • [X] Plan Establishing Worth
-[X] Claim: "Ajora's full story" To be simple, we don't need to give up any passwords to provide proof.
-[X] Reveal "Ajora's initial location" By providing the layout and viewpoint of the start of the conflict from the bridge of the carrier until we were removed we can establish that we were on a different ship than the one we were found on and transferred before the fighting got too serious. We can show the marks from the Shock-sticks if there are any. This does bring a questions, including why we were moved but we can handle that with:
-[X] Reveal "Taiidani Fleet Motivation: Hide information from Imperial Intelligence" The records of our confinement were purposely not made to prevent Imperial Intelligence from learning about the dissent. We don't need to explain family ties to said spy network and we don't want to think about what could have happened after the battle.

Claim: "Ajora's full story" To be simple, we don't need to give up any passwords to provide proof.

So, this skill is a Diff 3 Computers check, but you've got the HUGE environmental bonus of +3 from...it's your computer. And not even that secured!

Reveal "Ajora's initial location" By providing the layout and viewpoint of the start of the conflict from the bridge of the carrier until we were removed we can establish that we were on a different ship than the one we were found on and transferred before the fighting got too serious. We can show the marks from the Shock-sticks if there are any. This does bring a questions, including why we were moved but we can handle that with

This is an awareness check, diff 4! But you did have a good view of the map, so i'd say that's a +2 environmental bonus!

That's 1 heat, putting you at...1 heat! Out of 6!

This is a Taiidani Imperial background check, but I'd say it's Intrigues, not Imperial Law. So, your skill of 0 versus a diff 5. Since you're supported by the evidence (there ARE no logs, that's +2 enviromental bonus)

So, that's 3 heat, putting you at 4/6!

Then turn ends and you get 3/6 and the Actors get to Act!

CHAPTER TWO: Integration (0.3)
Ajora sighed, quietly. "If you check my wrist comp, you can get the date and time. My passwords aren't that secure. But what really matters is...I wasn't on the frigate when the battle started - I was on the carrier, on the bridge, shouting at my commander about it being an illegal order."

Emilia arched an eyebrow. "Can you prove it?"

Ajora hunched her shoulders. Then she realized...

She could.

"I was on the bridge. I, uh...I know the exact disposition of everything in the first few minuets of the fight - you corroborate that with the flight recorders. If I was on the frigate, I'd have a different view of the battle, and I know I would because the kinetic frigates were deployed on the spinward front in a wall formation, like so, to keep anything from evacuating to a higher orbit in a barrage range. The heavy destryoers were in an arrowhead formation, heading straight for the center, while there were six...no, seven squadrons of Triikdor fighters, twelve each, with four squadrons of Kark attack bombers."

She blushed. "They were in claw formations, disposed in standard patterns - here, here, here, and here." She held her fingers up, charting the course.

Emilia pursed her lips slightly.

"So, you saw they were going to head for Kharak to destroy it and attempted to waylay the plans. For that you were imprisoned."

"...yeah..." Ajora said.

"And your cell?"

Ajora realized there was an answer that was almost the truth, even.

"...in the Taiidan Empire, there is an organization called the Astronomic Survey. The Eyes. They're basically spies. They keep tabs on our enemies. On the galactic council. On...disloyal elements. This fleet...they would want to keep everything that happened here as secret as they could. If it got out to the rest of the galaxy - just to the rest of the empire..."

She trailed off as Emilia listened. The Somtaaw woman drummed her fingers on the counter. She nodded. "Very...interesting." She said, slowly. "I'll need to check this information with other sources, Lieutenant." She leaned forward. "But for now, why don't you tell me about this Galactic Council?"

"High, low, high, low, high, low, high- oofh!"

Bow rocked backwards on his heels, skidding slightly as his best friend in the whole universe lashed out with a heel kick that you wouldn't expect from someone so short and water-rich as Glimtara. The impact left his forearm aching and the pad he was holding dimpled in half as his friend learned the reason why most warriors didn't throw themselves into that kind of strike in actual battle as she rebounded, lost her balance, and collapsed backwards onto the padding.

The gymnasium on this level of the Mothership, like most crew quarters, was spartan, clean, and too well used. The ship's crew had supposed to be fifty thousand Kushan, spread throughout the entire superstructure. Most of them were supposed to be centered in the cryogenics bay, the bridge, engineering and fabrication. But the Mothership, currently, had sixty eight thousand people aboard. The extra eighteen thousand were within the ranges that the ship was able to accept - but everyone was feeling the crunch of it.

They felt the crunch and appreciated it.

Bow, himself, appreciated the chance to not...

Think.

"You need to not throw yourself into things like that," Bow said, holding his hand out to Glimtara Nabaal. She scowled up at him, then grabbed his hand, huffing as he hauled her to her feet. "Keep your balance, only deliver blows you can recover from..."

"Right." Glimtara scowled at the pad he was still holding, as if it owed her something.

"...now, get ready to retreat, Glim," Bow said, grinning slightly. "Looks like shift-2 is here."

Glimtara lifted her head and huffed as she saw a collection of Sobani security specialists entering the room. They sized her up, dismissed her, then swept their gazes to Bow. They nodded to him. Kith Brother, they said. One flashed a Sobani hand sigh. Bow responded in Tiirese. "We're good, you can use the facilities."

Glimtara felt a flush rising on her dusky brown cheeks. She wanted to tell Bow it was okay - that he didn't have to earn the icy frowns from his Kiith brothers. Instead, she crossed her arms over her chest. "Yeah, lets get something to eat."

"After a shower."

"Yeah, fine, I guess!"

The mess hall they picked was bustling and the ration packs were shockingly good. One of the nice things about being on the most advanced starship ever built, the protein fabrication systems were top notch. Glimtara pushed her matzo with a fork, while Bow ate like he had been starving. "Wish we had..." she trailed off.

"Hmm?"

"You've heard they still have that Taiidani alive?" Glimtara asked.

"Yeah," Bow said. "I hope...I hope she..."

"What?"

"I don't know." Bow shook his head. "I know everyone else says good riddance to the first batch. But we're not some...Heresy War sandrunner crew - this is the Mothership. We're CEF." He sat up a bit. The name Coalition Expeditionary Force meant a lot to Bow. Both his fathers had served in Operation Khadiim. Equatorial Hells, she was pretty sure Father Gorjii had actually been at the battle that had sent the so called K'Had Sajuuk, the Kiith Sa of Kiith Gaalsiem down in flames and ended the last paroxysm of violence before the official end of the Heresy Wars. Glimtara bit her lip slightly, seeing his expression.

"They burned Kharak, Bow."

"No, the bastards who gave the orders burned Kharak. She said she was in prison for refusing to obey!"

"But-"

"You have to be fucking kidding me!"

The voice that cut across their conversation drew both their attentions.

A tall, beautiful, dark skinned Somtaaw woman was standing by the water refresher, a smokeless cigstick in her hand. Technically against the regs and on their way towards extinction - just like everything on this ship, Glimtara thought - the cigstick was thrust towards the other man she was speaking with, a grave and grim looking S'jet. Their Kiith signifiers were clear, but what was even clearer was their shared, technical circle. They might be different Kiith...but both of them were Fleet Intelligence. Their conversation dipped quieter and Glimtara glanced at Bow, then stood and casually walked not...quite...towards the water refresher.

Her ears strained.

"It's carbon dated - its older than Landfall, Em," the S'jet said.

"Bullshit!" the Somtaaw said.

"It's got a symbol of the Angel Moon on the hilt," the S'Jet said.

"Fucking bullshit," the Somtaaw said. Despite her words, her cigstick was trembling. Her hands were shaking.

"You know it," the S'jet said.

The Somtaaw woman - she was older than Glimtra by at least two decades, maybe three - smoked on the cigstick. It was smokeless, so no vapor emerged, beyond two tiny trails from her nose. She hissed. "Sajuuk's balls! It can't be, it can't fucking be that sword. Run it by Historical."

"Can I help you, Ensign?" the S'jet asked, frowning directly at Glimtra, who stood stock still.

"N-No, uh, uh, uh," she said, then saw his nametag. Her face went cold. "F...Fleet Intelligence Moderator."

It was Cynsk S'jet. Fleet Intelligence was a relatively small branch - but he was the voice of Fleet Intelligence. He had the authority to have her scrubbing corridors all week. Or worse. Much worse.

"Lets continue this conversation elsewhere, Em," Cynsk S'jet said.

Emilia Somtaaw shot Glimtara a wintery frown. "Yes. Lets." She narrowed her eyes, clearly recognizing Glimtara. Glimtara flushed.

When she returned to the table, Bow was looking a bit like he was about to say I told you so.

Glimtara took her seat. "Do you know anything about an ancient mythical sword?" she asked.

"W...I...what?" Bow stammered.

"You're Sobani!" Glimtara said.

"And swords haven't been used as a serious war-weapon for...for..." Bow paused, then leaned back in his seat, frowning slightly. Until four days ago was unsaid. There had been plenty of gunfire aboard the captured Taiidani frigate. But at the end of the day, what had broken the crew, what had made the ship Kushan hadn't been pistol, rifle or grenade.

It had been the knife.

Bow whispered. "In his name..." he put his hand to his mouth, his eyes distant. "Caaliburnous..."

Glimtara frowned. Hard. "Who is that Taiidani anyway?" She muttered.

***
Ajora had a hard time sleeping. The interview had been long. Slow. Grinding. And still, sleep was elusive. When she fell into it again, she had vauge, incoherent dreams of running down a ship's. Calling out for someone. Behind her, deck plating kept lifting up and hands kept reaching out, gray and pallid, catching at her ankles.

When she was dragged from sleep, it was a mercy, even if her brains felt like mush and she saw everything through a bleary wall of fatigue. She blinked away the smears of light and saw two stern faced Kushan waiting for her.

The mutely led her through the narrow containment corridors, to the chamber she had been interviewed before, and set her down. Once more, she was facing Emilia, who was looking at her with a severe frown.

"We have confirmed what you say to be true," she said. "You are...as far as is possible...not responsible for what your fleet did."

It sounded a bit like she was spitting out teeth.

But she meant it.

Ajora felt like she couldn't breathe. "S...So, I...am I free to go?"

"That's the question we need to answer now," Emilia said, frowning.

EMILIA: Claim "Taiidani Murderer"
KUSHAN PEOPLE: Reveal "Rumors about the sword"

AJORA'S CURRENT STATE
HEAT: 3/6
PROPS: "Loyalty: People Who Need Help and Kaja", "Motivation: I want to live", "Ajora's Full Story", "Ajora's Location", "Taiidani Fleet Motivation: Hide information from Imperial Intelligence"

EMILIA'S PROPS: "Loyalty: ???", "Motivation: ???", "Taiidani Murderer"
KUSHAN PEOPLE'S PROPS: "Loyalty: ???", "Motivation:???"
UNCLAIMED PROPS:, Taiidani Murderer

Looks like by claiming Ajora's full story, the location, and grabbing the motivation, you have enough narrative weight to get Emilia on your side! But your goal, remember, was to JOIN them! However, it does look like the Kushan People (being a fickle actor) have put a new prop on the field...

The intrigue is actually real close to being done. It's a relatively simple one, after all, to get us started off into the concept of using them. They're a major system in HEAT! Future intrigues are going to be a BIT more protracted.

Okay, here's an idea. Dragon, please correct me if I'm misinterpreting the rules.

[X] Plan: Read the Back of The Box
-[X] Reveal: Kushan People: Motivation - if Ajora understands what they want, she can offer to actually help with that cause.
-[X] Claim said motivation. Make it part of our goals. Offer our help.
-[X] Claim "rumors about the sword" if we still have the heat for it. Maybe this takes the form of us explaining how we got it in a way that fits with a lot of their myths. At the very least, it may lend wait to our willingness to help.

Here are three plans.

[X] Plan : Diplomat
-[x] Reveal : Galactic council Appeal (using Imperial Law)

[X] Plan : Pilot
-[x] Reveal : Trained Fighter pilot

[X] Plan : Messiah
-[x] Reveal : Angel moon upbringing
-[x] Claim : Sword

Basically, 3 different simple plans to give the Kushaan reasons to let us join

That would be either empathy or charm, then charm of leadership, then leadership!

Question, is there a Vent method for Intrigue like Power are for combat? Such as, revealing or removing our claim from a Motivation?

There are intrigue powers! You can even get them when you level up!

The other plans are great, I just see this being more in Ajora's wheelhouse. That is, stumbling and failing forward. We also need something that will be lower heat as breaking 6 and taking a fail could be bad if not done in a controlled manner.

[X] Plan "Dark Side Of The Angel Moon"
-[X] Reveal "Loyalty: People Who Need Help and Kaja:" Ajora's answer to the question of if she can be freed would be her asking to join, and plainly explaining from the heart -why- she wants to join. The Kushan people are victims of a genocide because some assholes are holding a grudge over a 5000 year old war and instead of leaving it with the dead where it belongs they have instead ignited a new one in its name. The Taiidani people have left that history behind, they are innocent in this matter, but those that did this genocide have betrayed them and they will be the next victims of atrocities as this escalates. Emilia would also be able to sus out Kaja existing and gleam more about Ajora's feelings than she knows herself. But it comes down to both the Kushan people and Taiidani people being innocent and needing protection, and the only way Ajora can help is by joining the Kushan fleet.
-[X] Reveal "Prophetic Heritage:" Now this would be by accident. Regardless of Emilia's answer to the prior request, Ajora would ask to get her personal belongings back and list them. Which includes saying the Hiigaran sword is hers, which will lead to telling the story of how she got it (because the patrol of empty space is an innocent story from an intel perspective, it's funny in how everything lined up perfectly to almost kill her and it's a good one to share in a bar over drinks as she can usually get one by showing the scar which she might do out of habit again) which can easily lead Emilia to pressing about the iconography on the sword, and Ajora saying that the Taniidani still worship the old gods of the Hiigarans, that the Angel Moon is still a gem of the empire and where she grew up.

I am aiming things this way as I am seeing Ajora starting to relax a bit and trust Emilia to at least be honest and have personal integrity even if every Kushan has a really good reason to want to kill every Taiidani in the galaxy. Opens up good narrative reason for control to slip in a very in character way towards what we desire, and if we do cap our heat here and force a fail, it means it may just expose our noble heritage instead.

Looks like we got a plan!

So, the first action is a diff 3 charm check, with no modifiers because, while you ARE telling the truth, the hard part is...convincing them. That nets you 3 heat, putting you at 6/6

The second check is a diff 3+1 leadership check - netting you another 3 heat, but I will give you a +2 environmental bonus thanks to the existence of the sword's rumors. This still puts you at 7/6 heat. You can either fail OR you can overheat! Failing would mean Ajora wouldn't have the prophecy hanging over her head - but also, it'd mean the negative side effects overheating wouldn't hit.

In this case, overheating would shift the "Taiidani Murderer" into your control again...

So, I think that, narratively, is the most interesting. Some crew believe she's the Sajuuk-Ra, and some believe she's a Taiidani murderer who should be airlocked!

CHAPTER TWO: Integration (0.4)
Ajora breathed in - slow, ragged, through her teeth. She felt a sudden jolt of anger in her breast...but it wasn't aimed at this interrogator, this woman who was trying to be professional through what had to be a haze of sorrow so intense it made Ajora's heart hurt just to think about it. She forced her voice to be calm. Level. "This war is so old that...that most people in the galaxy don't even remember it as anything but legends and prophecies and myths." She shook her head. "And the bastards in that fleet started it again - and made us...made me into a murderer. A murderer of millions. I won't...I can't let them do that. I...there are...I can't."

She thought of Kaja.

What would Kaja do in that impossible position - stuck between her loyalty and her brains, between her precarious position and the deep, dark pit of being a lower caste mutant.

Emilia narrowed her eyes fractionally.

"I want to help," Ajora said, her eyes flaring. "I want...I can fly. I know Taiidani regs, codes. I know the galaxy." She smiled, shyly. "Parts of it, at least."

Emilia frowned, then stood. "I will need to bring this up with Fleet Intelligence."

She flipped her hand. "Wait here, crewman-" she turned midway through the conversation, to one of the burly men who waited by the door leading into the room. "-bring her something to eat."

"Yes sir."

Ajora was left with a meal that tasted like recycled proteins formatted in the blandest method imaginable, pushing around cubes of quasi-meat in quiet and darkness, waiting to see what the outcome of all of this was going to be. She didn't eat anything. There was no room in her stomach - too full of tension.

"I can't believe I'm hearing this," Flight Commander Tjen Riif-Sa said, his brows furrowing into an angry brown V above his green-gray eyes. "We should pump the bitch full of truth drugs, skin her for everything she's got, then pitch her out an airlock."

"The so called truth drugs were not as effective on the command crew as we wanted," Cynsk S'jet said from his place on the circular table in the middle of Fleet Command. The window in the office looked out on the bridge - bustling with Kiith about their work. In the center of it, surrounded by a metallic blast shield, was the one of them that was both present and not present. Who was both mentioned and not mentioned. Who was given name, rank, deference...

And spoken to as little as possible.

Emilia thought it was tantamount to spitting in Fleet Command's face. But, being junior to Cynsk at this meeting, she couldn't bring it up without a pretext. So, instead, she stirred her tea and listened to the various bigwigs bat the issue back and forth.

"They're human, aren't they?" Tjen groused.

"Yes, but they had some kind of induced allergic reaction to the serum," Cynsk said, quietly. "I believe it's not as new nor as unique an innovation as Kiith Naabal had hoped or thought."

"I want to discuss the sword, myself," Resourcing Head Vask Somtaaw said, in his unassuming and quiet way. He was the smallest Somtaaw that Emilia had ever seen in her life, and she had no idea how he had gotten to the head of Resourcing - it might have been the most 'laid back' of the main divisions, but that was grading on a serious curve. "My people have worked with the, uh, the high forehead types in Engineering and in R&D. It's genuine. The...capstone is made from the same stone as the Guidestone."

Silence.

Emilia sipped from her tea.

Tjen made an abortive jerking motion with his hand, as if he wanted to waive away the problem. "Facts. Facts, we're looking at facts here, not ancient legends-"

"Ancient legends said that we came from the stars," Vask pointed out, showing more backbone than Emilia had expected from him.

"They also said that the bearer of the Sword of Caaliburnous would have miraculous powers! He'd be nine feet tall, and raise the dead with a touch!" Tjen snapped.

"Considering the intelligence she can provide - continued, updated intelligence, at every situation we run into, she may save more lives than she could ever raise," Emilia said. She had meant it to be a quiet mutter to Cynsk - but it had come out rather louder, and into the silence left behind by Tjen's angry tirade.

Cynsk was S'jet to the bone. He didn't rankle at her sticking her sand-sculler in without being asked - instead, he accepted what she had said and arched an eyebrow. "Emilia raises a good point. Fleet Intelligence advises that we keep her."

Tjen frowned.

"Resourcing advises likewise," Vask said.

Tjen's mutter wasn't audible. Behind her cup of tea, lifted to her lips to hide her scowl, Emilia could read: Mountain grubbing heathen superstitions. But then again, lip reading wasn't always the most precise art. She sipped the tea.

Baiire Saglad, head of R&D, sighed. "R&D advises likewise."

"Flight Command says kill her and let Sajuuk sort it out," Tjen said.

The last two division heads had been the most quiet. Garne S'jet had been quiet, reserved, and nervous even before his position as Head of Cryogenics had gone from stupendously important to quite possibly the most vital task that had ever been laid on the shoulders of a single man in the history of Kharak. He adjusted his spectacles. "C...Cryogenics votes with Flight Command. We can't risk it."

Netjalia Naabal scowled. "The fact we're putting this to a vote at all is disgusting." She shook her head. "We can't kill another prisoner."

"The Taiidani who died under interrogation were...mostly...accidents," Cynsk said, but even his S'jet calm faltered under Netjalia's fierce glare. He looked aside.

"All right, the advisory is in," Tjen said. "What do you say, Fleet Command?"

The pause felt like it lasted forever.

At last...

From inside that cylinder of metal, which jacketed around a cylinder of glass, which contained a slurry of frictionless suspension fluids and a dizzyingly complex webwork of bioneural uplinks that webbed a human mind to the cold steel of a ship that spanned three kilometers...a voice spoke. It came through the PA in the office. Those who had known Dr. Karan S'Jet before she had taken the sacrifice of being wedded to the ship like this thought her voice sounded almost the same.

Almost.

"There's been enough killing."

"That's it then," Emilia said, as Tjen sighed, then clearly looked like he was forcing himself to put his anger somewhere else - to let professionalism step in.

"See to it she's bunked somewhere...secure," Cynsk murmured to her.

"I already have the perfect idea, sir," Emilia said, smiling wryly.

Ajora jerked her head up from a muzzy half-dream of deserts and sands and blazing light. She had been walking beside someone older and wiser and kinder than her. Don't worry. We're both Unbound, in this.

She blinked away sleep and the confusion of a badly interrupted nap as she saw Emilia Somtaaw standing there, with a duffel bag under her left arm. The older woman slapped it with her palm. "This has some freshly fabricated clothes - we don't know what your Kiith is, so your flag patch will be blank for now..." she smirked, slightly. "Come on. A room's waiting for you."

Ajora felt the tension in her stomach evaporate. She stood and nodded.

"R-Right," she said.

Stepping out, she moved into the corridor, past the two guards. They didn't move to follow her. As they ambled down the corridor, Emilia setting a slow pace, Ajora started to stand up straighter and straighter.

"Who was it?"

Ajora started. "Who what? Huh?"

"You said there are...and cut yourself off," Emilia said, pausing at the door.

Ajora blushed. "My, uh..."

Adoptive sister?

Pet?

Best friend?

"...my friend, Kaja, she's in the Imperial Navy too. It's a big navy, she wasn't in the Ninth Fleet, but..."

"I understand," Emilia said, quietly. "But if she was your friend, and deserved that friendship, she wouldn't have gone along with it either."

Ajora wanted to agree. She wanted to argue. She wanted certainty. She wanted Kaja beside her.

Instead, she nodded.

The elevator doors whisked open.
