Arc 14 Post 63: What Gnaws at Greatness
What Gnaws at Greatness

Fifth Day of Olweje-eza (Olweje Ascendant), 1349 A. L. (After Landfall)

As you follow the swaying thread that still leads out of the shell, out of the grasp of the beast you realize that it is the only way out, and the only way those left aboard the Marcella can aid you. It seems a long way indeed and so resolved, if not at ease you call out: "A bargain then, we shall go through your tests."

"Oh... good, you play the game you win the prize, the stolen thief might yet be yours," the words pass not through air, but through the floor, through the body of the creature. Don't think about it. It's only when Esha gives you a worried look that you realize you must have said or at least murmured it aloud.

"How do you steal a thief, why would you steal them?" Swift Pebble asks, her mind open to all.

Much to your surprise it is Wanderer who replies, tapping his club on the ground suspiciously. "You take them war bond against their kin behaving right. Hope this thing doesn't try to cage us."

"Oh how clever, but you must know there is more than one pair of hands in the taking, more than one ladle in the kitchen."

You steal a thief from someone else, you take a prisoner from another's hands. What prisoner could this beast have that you would be interested in. The Marcella had lost some sailors overboard, but you cannot imagine... "Ansefu, they have Ansefu king of Lirman," you send to Swift Pebble and she sends it on.

Before any others can speak, in silence or with voice the creature you seem to be... on speaks again. "For the trial of might know that there are parasites that burrow in my flesh and trouble my dreams, rid me of them and their pestiferous breath."

"Breath?" Esha's voice is like soft honey and it too burrows in the ear. "Your pardon great one, but we do not know what troubles you and so we cannot aid you."

"A pair of beast-masked ones that feast on my blood and delight in daring each other to ever more brazen acts of mischief that they might to their elders say 'behold that we have moved the old worm to snap its jaws and slash its tail.'" The great body shudders now with annoyance and not with mirth.

"We do not swim as well as you do through the dark sea," Esha is quick to reply. As the creature starts to grumble and grouse about leeches and may they choke on their heavy breath the sorceress recounts what you are likely to be dealing with, Formless ones who chose to wear the guise of beasts, not quite fish and not quite land beast, not a frog either for they have power over the air. Her account of how you would normally fight such creatures is frank... you would not, but according to your host when it pushes them out of its body you will have a few moments of confusion when it is they who will not know where they are and then you may ambush them.

"I'll bring them up under my shell then... get ready."

How do you prepare for the fight?

OOC: You get a surprise round before the Naunets can act; they will be pushed out of the flesh of the Great Worm right next to you under the shell.

We fucked?

@DragonParadox, as the creature presumably wants to get rid of the parasites more than to fuck us, and the fight begins at its convinience, can we request reinforcements? The place is tight, but e.g. the drummer with Drums of Haste and/or Inge for Fortune Hexes from a distance and healing after can help.

Yeah, and it looks like no Blindness/Deafness because of Amorphous Anatomy.
The spell should still work, if a saving throw is failed, because it's magical Blindness, not something inflicted physically through the loss of eyes or having them covered in mid or something similar. A +11 Fortitude save bonus is difficult to beat, though.

@DragonParadox, is Esha willing to disclose whether she is Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic? It's relevant because of the 1/day Naunet's Chaos Hammer ability.

Edit: And another question, is it possible for the Swift Pebble to be transformed into a Zentragt by the horn, or is she not enough of a warrior for that? If possible, would she agree?

Well, if we're going to be able to make a surprise attack, we might as well make the most of it, just like we did with the Dragon.

These two Formless are seriously dangerous, with high HP, damage reduction we can't bypass, high spell resistance, and a bunch of problematic abilities. I think our best bet is to distract one of them as best we can while focusing the majority of our damage on the other one in hopes of killing it ASAP. Inge's Snowball (4d6 Cold damage) and Zaia's bombs (2d6+10 Fire damage) don't allow SR, so that's helpful, but Esha's staff only casts at 8th level, giving her Magic Missiles (4d4+4 Force damage) a 50/50 chance of working (though that's much better than her own 4th level casting). If we get lucky, they could knock off half their target's HP right from the start. With Roland, Tom, and Wanderer all Raging, Hasted, and buffed with Encouraging Roar, we have a solid chance of nuking the first Formless in one round before turning out full attention against the second.

Wanderer has a Chaotic alignment, which will make him more resistant to some of the Formless' abilities, so I have him acting as the tank against the first Formless, while the Chaotic Zentragt is doing the same against the second. The Zentragt is Large-sized and strong, plus it's got Damage Reduction as well, so it can shrug off some hits on top of being resistant to its other stuff.

/fingers crossed

Updated plan on the next page.

[X] I'm tired of these motherfucking Formless on this motherfucking Material Plane (paraphrasing Samuel L. Jackson)
-[X] From the ship, we'll need a volunteer to use the Horn of the Wearbear to become a Zentragt and our newly hired drummer to play the Drums of Haste, along with Tom, Zaia, and Inge.
-[X] Before the fight:

--[X] The Zentragt will use its Bear's Endurance SLA (+4 CON) on Roland, Tom, and Swift Pebble (for a total of +2 HP). It will use its Rage SLA (+2 STR & CON, +1 Will saves, -2 AC) on Roland (for a total of +15 HP) and Tom (for a total of +9 HP).
--[X] Inge will cast Mage Armor on herself and Zaia. She will use her Guidance cantrip on everyone immediately before combat, this will be used to help resist Formless special abilities or SLAs.
--[X] Esha will renew her Shield spell and Twilight Barrier, if necessary, and cast Mage Armor on the Zentragt and drummer.
--[X] Zaia will drink his Mutagen (
+2 Natural Armor, +4 CON, -2 CHA), along with his Bomber's Eye and Targeted Bomb Admixture extracts. He will apply a dose of Greenblood Oil (1 CON damage per round for 4 rounds, DC 13 Fort) poison to Roland, Tom's, and Swift Pebble's weapons.
--[X] The drummer will begin making Perform checks to activate the drums' Haste spell. Once he is successful, this will be the signal for the Great Work to expel the Formless in the desired positioning. The designated targets for the Haste effect will be Roland, Tom, Wanderer, the Zentragt, and Swift Pebble. The drummer will stay well back from combat, along with our other casters.

--[X] Tom will use Coordinated Maneuvers to give everyone a +2 bonus to Combat Maneuvers for the next four rounds.
-[X] Surprise Round:
--[X] Roland will use Encouraging Roar as a Swift Action to give everyone a +2 Morale bonus to attack and damage rolls for one round. He will and Tom Power attack the first Formless immediately after Inge, Zaia, and Esha hit it with their abilities and Wanderer makes the first attack. Roland (+13/+13 Attack vs Flat-Footed AC of 17: 1d8+6+1d6; 17-20/x2) and Tom (+10/+10 Attack vs Flat-Footed AC of 17: 1d8+3; x3) will attempt to keep the Formless Flanked between them and Wanderer so they all benefit from another +2 attack bonus (bonus is only included in Swift Pebble's attack line). In the next round, as a Swift Action Roland will use Challenge against the first Formless, unless it is already dead, in which case he will use it against the second.

---[X] Inge will use her Guiding Spirit ability as a Swift Action, then target the Formless with a Snowball spell (+9 Touch Attack vs Flat-Footed Touch AC of 9, make 2 attack rolls and use highest result; 4d6 Cold damage, DC 15 Fort save to avoid being Staggered for 1 round). In the following rounds, Inge will use her Fortune or Healing Hexes as necessary, only attempting to hit a Formless with Snowball if a good opportunity presents itself.
---[X] Esha will target the first Formless with a Magic Missiles spell (
4d4+4 Force damage, 8th caster level vs Spell Resistance 18) from her staff and maintain a Soulward (+2 Will save bonus) on Roland each round as a Swift Action. She will continue casting Magic Missiles spells as long as her staff charges allow before falling back on her Blindness spells.
---[X] Zaia will target the first Formless with a Firebomb (
+8 Touch Attack vs Flat-Footed Touch AC of 9; 2d6+10 Fire damage). He will carefully wait for another opportunity to use his bombs when there is no risk of hitting an ally, providing what healing he can with extracts or potions in the meantime.
---[X] Wanderer will Rage (
+4 STR & CON, +2 Will saves, -2 AC) and attack the first Formless alongside Roland and Tom, using Power Attack and his Reckless Abandon ability while doing so (+11/+11 Attack vs Flat-Footed AC of 17: 1d10+9; x2). He will take the lead against it rather than Roland or Tom, hoping to draw its attention to him.
---[X] Swift Pebble attacks the first Formless when it is Flanked (
+12/+12 Attack vs Flat-Footed AC of 17: 1d3+7+1d6[50% chance this +1d6 Precision damage does not apply]; 19-20/x2).
--[X] The Zentragt will use its True Strike SLA then Charge the second Formless, making a Bull Rush against it to push it as far from the rest of the group as possible (CMB of 10 + 2 from Coordinated Maneuvers + 2 from Encouraging Roar + 2 from Charging + 1 from Haste + 20 from True Strike = +37 vs CMD of 25 [28 - 3 due to being denied DEX bonus]). After this initial attack, it will continue to Power Attack with all of its natural attacks while trying to keep the Formless distracted and preventing it from interfering with the fight against the first one.

For second to last update Arc 14 Post 62: Leviathan:
Leviathan

Fifth Day of Olweje-eza (Olweje Ascendant), 1349 A. L. (After Landfall)

"Whales," you answer, recalling as you do that it is a trial of great strength among the Anwa to hunt such a beast with just such a weapon as you have found. "Sharks also..." Something shifts underfoot by some unseen current as Wanderer snaps his head back whence you had come, but even as you come near to biting your tongue you say, "And other creatures of the sea besides of which there are many."

The shaking stops as abruptly as it had started, the last swaying of the light casting strange shadows on the dark stone of the walls. Wait, the walls... You look down to see black boots on a pale surface covered in a patina that is more than water. As you open your mouth to speak again the same odd voice echoes from the far reaches of the chamber.

"Many creatures of the sea... one is much like the other then?" a thrumming pause hangs there and then a question poisonously soft. "So if I were to slay the creature you call Ripper that even now swims close, then he would be to you much as any other. Curious that he should dare to come so close when you value him so little."

"It's alive... it's all alive," you had never heard that tone in Swift Pebble's manner, as a drowning soul gasping out a desperate call.

That is when you see it... above there is stone arching in a rough-hewn dome, to your left, to your right there is stone, but below the shifting pale floor, too smooth like the underside Ripper had claimed to have seen in the silt that was alive, the body of some titanic beast in armor of pumice.

"You asked a riddle and I made my guess," you answer, your voice more steady than you had expected it to be, perhaps more steady than it aught to have been given where you stand. "If you wish to take it for an insult then I cannot stop you, save to say that I did not mean it so. If you would make threats against one who had lead faithfully and fought with honor then beware, be ye creature of flesh or spirit or dragon of the depths."

A strange gurgling sound echoes under the vault of stone... It takes you a moment to recognize it as mirth. "Three tasks I was asked to put to you: one of mind, one of might and one of will. You failed one, but should you pass through the others then you shall have that twice stolen..."

"What the hell is going on?" Antonio's voice cuts through the strange offer. "All the otter-kin are running around like their tails are on fire..."

"It's not a stone, but a beast with a shell of stone on its back."
You get the dubious honor of learning five new curses in the span of an instant. "It's man-clever at least, it wants us to play a game."

The moment of frozen shock spreads like ice over a fountain pool, stilling the chatter of your company, then Esha clears her throat and primly proclaims. "Is it not thought ill done among your kind to make a riddle that only you can be the answer for?"

Again the laughter comes and then a single word: "Choose."

"Should we barge in and make bloody sheets of the fog?" Antonio asks and to be honest you are more then a little tempted and yet you recall well the other words, the talk of rewarding you in something precious is not without its own temptation.

What do you do?

[] Call out to Antonio that he needs to fight it from without as you did from within

[] Try to take the trial, as much for the curiosity as the promise of reward

OOC: You guys were surprisingly close with your guesses.

Maybe this
too smooth like the underside Ripper had claimed to have seen in the silt
should have Swift Pebble instead of Ripper, as it was she who mentioned it?
"The underside is strange..." Swift Pebble sends, "It is smooth as though it had been worn down by silt and silt swirls all around it still

Maybe club instead of spear here?
it is Wanderer who replies, tapping his spear on the ground
As Wanderer probably has his greatclub which is better, unless of course he took both or judged the spear better for the situation.

Here perhaps "Faceless" should be "Formless"?
Faceless ones who chose to wear the guise of beasts,
It seems "Faceless" is sometimes used by you interchangeably with the "Formless", is it intended or is only the "Formless" right?

@Goldfish, perhaps just in case explicitly add that the drummer should try to stay away from combat?

Also I'm not sure about the grappling, though perhaps I'm not understanding the mechanics right, doesn't Protean's
Freedom of Movement (Su): A protean has continuous freedom of movement, as per the spell.
with the spell saying
All combat maneuver checks made to grapple the target automatically fail. The subject automatically succeeds on any combat maneuver checks and Escape Artist checks made to escape a grapple or a pin.
prevents grappling, or at least make it non-feasible?

And another point, shouldn't we perhaps try to concentrate on only one Naunet first, trying to kill in suprise round and leaving Zentragt to fend off the second, and then come for the 2nd one? Edit: or even for everyone, including Zentragt, to pile up on only one and just ignore the 2nd until the start of the normal combat.

She is True Neutral, I think you know her well enough to guess that
Since she has never killed anyone I would say that Olweje would not accept her, though in the future if she does he would have no other issues with her. He is a god of war not of humans.

Too bad we did not spend our XP on purchases in the place which would be ideal for arc end.

Oh, duh, completely forgot about that.

Thanks for the reminder, will update the plan shortly.

Okay, Zentragt section of the plan has been modified.

Bull Rushing it is the better option, now that I think about it. Thanks to True Strike and various other buffs, the Zentragt is going to massively exceed the Formless' CMD, pushing it at least 15 feet away, possibly much more depending on the dice. It will probably end up slammed into the far wall of the chamber.

--[] The Zentragt will use its True Strike SLA then Charge the second Formless, making a Bull Rush against it to push it as far from the rest of the group as possible (CMB of +10 + 2 from Coordinated Maneuvers + 2 from Encouraging Roar + 2 from Charging + 1 from Haste + 20 from True Strike = +37 vs CMD of 25 [28 - 3 due to being denied DEX bonus]). After this initial attack, it will continue to Power Attack with all of its natural attacks while trying to keep the Formless distracted and preventing it from interfering with the fight against the first one.
