Arc 10 Post 30: By Strange Stars Kinndled
By Strange Stars Kindled

Thirty-Sixth Day of Ikomi-eza (Ikomi Ascendant) 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

You give as detailed an accounting of the journey as you may in the time that is left to you, keeping back only those things which might be injurious to you and yours in the future and for his part the priest nods somberly when he hears of Neverborn, of pirates and even of the dragon. What his thoughts are you cannot guess at that readily, save only in a few instances when emotions flicker through to be seen upon his face. Fear, about the blight in the north with the coming of the daemons, fascination when he hears about the owl that had followed you so far, he calls it a good omen, though claims he does not know more of it and when you give an account of what you had found in the dragon's cave, the sheet of gold and the eggs, you see in his eye a flicker of greed, there and gone again, such that you almost doubt you had even seen it.

Ah, perhaps you are borrowing trouble where you have found only help. After all, Serik is not shy about mentioning his own skill with the breaking of curses under the eye of his god. "I make no promise that I can break this foul enchantment until I have seen it, but at the very least I shall look upon it and with all my arts seek to unmake it, at no more cost than the deed itself might ask of me."

Curse-breaking at cost, the thought is so odd it almost draws an inappropriate laugh from your lips. Still, you do not know what cost Ashinu may ask of one who would be freed of a curse by his power. You can only hope that it is not one good Christian men would be barred from paying. Though your own faith may be shaken you know that many of your men, in particular Aubert, find great comfort in prayer and the love of God.

Option Unlocked: Visit the Temple of Ashinu for Curse Breaking

As you bid your farewells to the young lord of House Koire your mind is filled with all the things that you must do to settle the Fellowship in for the winter, crowding out the mysteries and other arcane matters. You will need a place to sleep ashore and space for the arms and armor you had claimed from the raiders... as well as no doubt space for all the goods Antonio aims to buy, stabling in the city, and probably a laboratory of sorts for Zaia, preferably one that is not too close to the more flammable parts of the city, and that just for a start. You cannot even imagine what tools and other substances one might need to butcher a dragon or what repairs the Marcella might need, or indeed accept given her... odd nature.

It is not until you are past the gate and down the steps from the high city that you realize there is another thing upon your mind, one which you had so long missed you had all but forgotten it. As you look to the future you feel hope for yourself and for all your company. There under the light of alien stars with Inge at your side, not saying a word but simply enjoying the cool sea breeze you know this, be the night ever so dark there will always be light to navigate by.

OOC: I changed up how the rewards are presented so as to make planning more convenient. In other news the fact that you have not lost anyone recently and the founding of the company with the future generally looking up has done good things for Roland's state of mind. He is in a better place than he was at the start of the quest.

That was Roland making a Sense Motive check, right? Or nearly so? Either way, I think that's pretty good cause to have the stone eggs and sheet of gold examined more closely by someone else who might have knowledge of what they actually are or how they might be used.

Ah, finally time for Esha to level up. Been looking forward to this, and if the rest of the XP goes to Roland, he'll only be 1250 short of his own level up.

That was what making a sense motive check looks like yeah, it is a mundane skill not mind reading so you only get hints, especially from someone you know so little of. Sense motive works best when it has something to build on

This is a good level up for Esha. Not only is she gaining the ability to cast 2nd level spells and learning two new spells (including one of the two needed for her to recharge her staff), she's also getting her 4th level attribute bonus. The +1 to Intelligence will increase the effectiveness of her spells and retroactively boost her skill points. That lets her put some points into additional Knowledge skills, namely Arcana and the Planes. Both of those are important, especially the Planes, given our circumstances, Marcella's nature, and the shit we keep running across. I'm actually trying to figure out whether or not she should skip putting points into Diplomacy of Knowledge (Religion) this level up so she can max out her Knowledge (Planes) skill for her level.

@DragonParadox, I'm updating character sheets and was about to add the Fey Gold pendant to Antonio's, but the wording of the item's powers is a bit problematic.

Shad'gorum Nugget - Wondrous Items - Magic Equipment - Archives of Nethys: Pathfinder RPG Database

This impossibly hard, lumpy piece of unforged iron originates from metal that remained cool after smelting—ore that resisted all attempts to forge it into another shape. Worshipers of Gorum believe this metal is a reflection of their god’s unrelenting determination, and often fashion this...

Since it wasn't intended for Antonio, I know he doesn't get to use the Chill Metal ability, but it looks like he could still use the at will Mending ability. Is that the case?

Also, I was looking over Esha's sheet and noticed an issue. She's had the Light Sensitivity and Unhallowed Birth weaknesses on her sheet since she joined us, but looking at the variant Dhampir racial info, she should only have the one weakness. Unhallowed Birth normally replaces Light Sensitivity for Ajibachanas. Was this a mistake or did you decide she gets both? It's not a big deal, and she can overcome the effects of Light Sensitivity using her Penumbra cantrip, but I figured I would confirm.
@Goldfish , I feel like this is too good to pass. The bonus to will is huge.
It's nice, but I'm not a fan. I can see why you would want to vote for it, though.

Unfortunately not. Mending is in the same line as chill metal, I interpret that to mean that they are the same as far as needing ownership of the item. Antonio just gets the passive bonus If you find some tinker fey they might be able to help you with unlocking its full powers though.

About Esha, she gets that in place of Negative energy Affinity, which would be much worse for you since no one has inflict spells to heal her with

And I still like this feat.

I will make my own plan then. I see Roland's schtick as overcoming things by sheer force of will
I'm not a fan of it, but that doesn't mean it's not good. I've added it to my plan.

I can see the appeal, it just doesn't seem very strong, IMO, and it feels like taking this would push Roland toward an anti-magic build rather than a martial one.

Upon further thought, I think I'm going to lean toward only having Roland learn Cumbrous Will and keep the rest of the XP. If Esha is scheduled to level up at the end of the next arc, which I'm assuming will probably be when our Winter in Orinilu ends, spending 1500 XP on it now seems like a bit of a waste. If we put 1750 XP toward Roland's advancement, he'll only need 750 XP to level up, which should be easy to manage at the end of the next arc while still having enough left over for other goodies.

Changed priest's name to Serik as it is in the previous update.

Question, if we don't take Esha's option and she levels up at the end of the next arc, will we still have to pay with XP, like it was with Inge, or will she level up without it, like it was with Antonio?

And another, had we surrendered Onogu Iranea's skull to Ohun, or do we have it with ourselves?

  1. At the end of the next update she levels for free.
  2. You surrendered the skull, among other reasons so that he could be buried in the rites of his kin

@Goldfish, if you decided not to level Esha up, what do you think of just gaining full XP and getting Roland to level 5?

+6 Will save bonus is good, but we don't have Remove Fear to suppress the blanket -2 roll malus (and will not have in the forseeable future, it's not on the witch spell list or alchemist formulae list and it's not a wizard/sorcerer spell), so we could only use it at most once per encounter, so Cumbrous Will doesn't look so good.

Though, actually, now that I'm thinking about it, @DragonParadox, how do you rule repeated activations of Cumbrous Will will work?

1. Will each additional activation cause fear to increase as usual, or will it stay at the current level or Shaken, whatever is greater?

2. If fear will increase, do you use standard 3-tier scale (Shaken, Frightened, Panicked), or the extended one (lesser grades: Spooked, Shaken, Scared, greater grades: Frightened, Panicked, Terrified, Horrified), referenced in Remove Fear? The extended one has stipulation that at Scared (like Shaken, but with -4 malus), when subjected to additional lesser grade effect there is a choice, progress to Frightened or become Staggered for 1 round instead.

With combat lasting 3 or 4 rounds at a maximum, I really like the feat. It could very well guarantee that we pass a will save, effectively negating a spell from an enemy.
