Anyone else thinking that we
It's a case of personal pride and status to become a Runelord. But it also comes with a fuckload of prestige and influence. If a Runesmith visits, you throw him a feast and make sure he feels welcome. If a Runelord shows up they can just show up and ask for a Throng to search for lost lore, marry your daughter who is betrothed to a prince, and do whatever the hell they generally feel like.
Sounds like they could make use of the Ranger's Guild. Why risk a traditional Throng looking for lost lore that might not even be there when you can send a group of Rangers in to at minimum make sure you are on the right track. Something to be aware of for when our Guild is more respected.

Now that we have access to gunpowder weapons , please lets set up a "sniper" unit of 20-40 dwarfs probably with masterwork level guns from zhufbar and a few guns for our hitsquad aswell .We really should stick to crossbows for most of our troops considering who we are and it not needing anything outside metal for our ammo wich isnt a issue. Gunpowder weapons are better against "monsters" and really armored foes wich arent our main enemies to be honest altough there are some so thats why i think a gunpowder unit of dwarfs would make sense . This should cost a martial action or two even to set up and then cost a decent amount to get the guns for it . Im not wanting a thunderer unit , i would like something better but it would cost more since i would want "masterwork" stuff . This is something vikki would be willing to do for example now that she isnt a archconservative. And we wouldnt need to expand gunpowder production much , maybe once or twice and thats mainly to help ranger guild keep up with their expentidure. This also makes sense only cause we are a ranger clan aswell , i wouldnt be able to recommend this if we werent to be honest.

Its also something that the ranger guild might do for their own hitsquads eventually. Or for each 10-30 man ranger squad , it wouldnt be a bad idea to have a few masterworked sniper guns available and for speciality units with them to fight monsters and stuff aswell.

I might make jokes about playing Dwarf Paragon but I do find the idea of knowingly raising the shame meter for a friend, especially a friend who just got the Undying Loyalty trait, to sit poorly with myself.

Damn well... if anything tells of how the craft of runes has gone downhill it is this. Runelords are no longer encouraged to become more than they were, no longer expected to aid all of dwarf kind, they are kept close like a miser's dwindling treasure.

Probably why a union with the Norse dwarfs was never in the cards, the hero worship they have of Snorri would never allow them to be so complacent. Still this makes me think of what the repurcussions would be of a runesmith refusing the title of Runelord because of the implications. If theres anyone who's traveling in that direction, its probably Garek.

I do not think it would be that strange really. I mean you have to seek out the position. Not doing so when you have the skill is not an active of visible defiance that anyone would notice.

I think sniper groups would be more like the Odro Ok. Small groups of eight Dawi, working in teams of two. Each team using a single mastercrafted sniper rifle.

But what about those super heavy crossbows Vikki showed you? They can punch through a black orc and stick out the back.

I like the crossbow.

We can poison the bolt too, when we are after something nasty, which we can't with the rifle.

How does the crossbow's range compare to the rifle?

I think we should have the ordo ok test both weapons.

Well i was thinking both for the hit squads and a small dwarf unit meant to kill leaders and monsters for our general throng and maybe for the ranger guild. And also to help deal with armored foes . Or if not a gun unit then maybe a unit with the super heavy crossbows to do the same thing as u suggested? And if not a gun unit , then atleast create a action to go buy "sniper masterwork guns" from zhufbar for both our hitsquad and for future ranger guild hitsquads to start with? Then after that have actions for vikki to try do her own version of a sniper gun wich is manufactured here for example after she is finished setting up the heavy crossbows and its manufacturing first .

And hell yes to poisoning for both ourselves and ranger guild . Please create a action to start the chain of actions for poisoned ammo for both guns and crossbows in the next turn update.

Explosive and poisoned bolts are feasible. They will be a future research project.

There will be a 'Vikki's workshop's option just like Garek's runeforge. To reduce pressure on the action economy.

Armour piercing and flesh shredding bolts too.

@Mayto I know this is an odd question especially from me, what with the constant desire for more gold, but can we take out Crossbows and armor off the trade good list and instead offer them free of charge to the Rangers' guild members? I mean the clan has already benefited off the guild a lot so why shouldn't the guild get a bit of a kickback from the clan in addition to training?

Already the case.

The Outpost description says that joining the Ranger Guild involves being given a crossbow and a suit of leather armour, and told to make one's way to Karak Skarrenruf alive.

The crossbows don't go "Bang!" and create a cloud of smoke when you fire them, either.

Do the Dwarfs have smokeless powder?

Zhufbar engineers have probably prototyped the formula somewhere. Maybe if we go down the dwarf alchemy path a bit, there might be a chance to develop it independently? Again though this is all probably radical. Sticking to developing crossbows is fine as is, though there are benefits to having gunpowder holdout weapons for closer range stuff. Grudgerakers anyone? If that's too radical, even a brace of pistols would do a lot of work for providing up close killing power. I'm excited for the opportunities gunpowder weapons are going to give us.

Vikki has a Grudgeraker which can fire either a solid slug, or buckshot. So it's not unfeasible. Expensive though.

yeah colt revolver equilevants as a close quarters weapons isnt a bad idea to pursue before you go down to axes for rangers and the rangers guild especially . Hell also for our own throng its also a idea . But that it would not be cheap . Basicly for 5-6 shots and u abandon to receive the charge ? Cause these are a thing in the mathilde wizard quest by dwarfs. The issue might be that there isnt enough production so this action again might be for named characters and the hit squad i guess altough you could compensate by having each char have several of them like mathilde has in that quest and even then this shouldnt be cheap .

And we also have grormril as a massive income stream in the future since there will be only so much gromril gear we will need even if we do gromril weapons for the ranger guild.

also @Mayto what about asking our runesmith to recruit more apprentices so that he can do more lesser runes eventually like the norse dwarfs do mainly being the example being the reason we ask? Mainly this could work for him cause hes a thorek apprentice and he is known especially for a runelord for alot of apprentices and he could try to emulate him? If our hold isnt enough he could go recruit from the vault holds and then there are grey mountain holds aswell wich i imagine are rarely searched for apprentices by runesmiths ? This could be a action wich shouldnt cost much and you roll for apprentices and their quality is my thought if you would allow it ? Cause rune actions are super expensive . Would like to do this in the near future so that when we get gromril eventually we would atleast have the ability to equip elite units with very basic rune items hopefully and the hit squad ofcourse. I have suggested it before but my idea was to do for every runesmith wich is way to radical for dwarfs .

I imagine we'll need to develop closer range weapons once we start actively doing tunnel fighting. Rakidum rangers might be phenomenal on the field and above ground, but tunnel fighting is a whole different beast. There's a reason dwarfs have developed a hyper defensive doctrine after all, and why Ironbreakers don't run around in leathers.

Selgrun is Garek's first apprentice. He's not gonna get more until he's happy with her.

Getting more apprentices is definitely something for much later on.
