I don't think it would be a good idea to encourage Vikki, who was a diehard conservative, to throw everything out the window and become the worst of radicals around. Well, worst of acceptable radicals. I genuinely don't think that would be good for her health

[X]Encourage Vikki to stay the course: You don't want to risk a confrontation with the Guild, or for Vikki to do something she might one day regret. Her faith in Morgrim is damaged, but it still exists.

[X] Encourage Vikki to break completely with tradition. The Engineer's Guild of Kraka Drak has proven to you that Engineers are fallible. Vikki should make whatever she wants, and use it whenever she feels like it. Perhaps just keep it in a secret workshop until needed.

A leader who is never willing to spend their soldiers' lives is almost as bad as one who spends their soldiers' lives recklessly. Instead, a good leader spends their soldiers' lives for a sufficiently good cause.

Much like we spent our Throng's lives during the war against the Everchosen to defend Kislev and ultimately the whole of Mallus, so too is it a worthwhile cause to "spend" Vikki's and Bokri's Shame for the betterment of our Karak and ultimately the greater Karaz Ankor. Shame is not a singular peril but a double-edged resource, and tech advancement is one of the areas worth "spending" Shame on. We just need to start cultivating successors to Bokri and Vikki, and make sure we have a replacement Thane and replacement Chief Engineer ready to take over by the time that Bokri and Vikki go Slayer.

If this was a singular quest centered around Bokri I'd agree to not but since this quest is going to coninue after his and vikkies deaths spending shame now to invest in higher tech in the future is in my mind worth it. After all we saw with the last quest that characters can die any time so better to load up shame and manage it now so our successor doesn't have to deal with it than play this as if it's only a Bokri quest.

I value Vikki more than I value incrementally more advanced and exotic technology.

The problem is that shameful acts aren't consequence-free outside of the shame; they antagonize other dwarves. Furthermore, while Bokri is doing fairly well as a "beardling thane," there is no guarantee that his heir, or their heir, will be able to keep it up. Dwarves are to some extent a gerontocratic society, and having a constant succession of youthful leaders who burn out early by making radical choices isn't necessarily compatible with their way of doing things.

If Bokri burns out and goes Slayer in twenty years, his son will not be ready to take the throne and start working on a family of his own.

I'm more than happy with steam power, stationary machine tools, and lever crossbows. I will not sacrifice her, our friend, for the potential of shiny tools. What if she goes slayer before actually getting us anything? I would rather not gain more shame either.

Fuck. I underestimated you people's morality again.
I think it's less about morality and more about being hit relatively close with shame increases. I read as many comments as I can and know that this shouldn't happen more often in the future but the contrast between this quest and last quest probably has less attentive followers freaking out and going Uber safe with the choices regarding shame. If it was just us getting shame or her getting shame it probably would be more even but both and being so close to last shame increase, even though it was undercut by a shame capacity increase, probably is making people just tuning in to the updates worried

Plus, if Malakai Makaison is anything to go by, Radical designs have a significantly higher chance of failure. Given that we are unlikely to use such designs except for in a life or death situation, such failures are likely to have lethal consequences. Even if Vikki isn't the one who gets killed, she probably would suffer another step towards Slayerdom with each death.
