It could be tempting to get some content, but sometimes it is better to avoid that content. For safety reasons.

[X] Offer to try to coax the strange creature on board, it has a collar maybe it can be baited with food

Leaving the matters of OOC knowledge aside (let's not? Please?) , MC has a pretty decent Handle Animal skill (+8) for the level.
He's no Ranger, but probably better suited to this than any of the Sailors.
And I feel lile he'd at least attempt, sure in his ability and knowledge of animal behavior.

Adding to this +8 animals is pretty damn good. I mean look at it this way, an Expert 3 with an animal focus would be somewhere in the 8-11 range depending on Cha and feats. Expert 3 is a master in the field, not a famed master, but still.

-[X] Explain to the Captain that you want to try and find out where it came from. Most collared animals know their way home, and you need to find civilisation soon.

If it has a collar, it is a link to civilisation. Which means a link to resources that we will absolutely require in short order to stay alive. We can't just ignore that, and showing kindness to another's creature before bringing it home to them is certainly not a bad start to an introduction.

Only reason I'm not picking the lure on board option is honestly because of meta reasons. Handle Animal doesn't work on Magical Beasts.

Also, because it's obviously someone's pet.

Given that DP has a history of rule 0ing things that make precious little sense (like how HA doesn't work on magical beasts), I'd argue that this has very little weight.

Since you did specify meta reasons I am going to say that does not apply here. Basically if something has animal level intelligence and animal behavior Handle Animal works fine. I am not going to give you guys a trap that can only be resolved by appealing to meta knowledge

I like this option. It's a good character establishing moment and it frames the decision to leave the beast alone to be via in character reasoning and not OOC meta-knowledge.

Fair enough. However, the other reason still applies. This is obviously someone's pet. Even if it confuses the hell out of us.
