I prefer this to focusing on duels because I want to keep Jacob more focused on esoteric riddle and magical concepts rather than a tangible, physical competition. But, it's not a bad choice- certainly better than having no interest in the matter.

As to the next two turns. Well, it'd be my preference to get all of Jacob's class-related skills to P- (except arithmancy and magical theory). First, for mechanics as that is the most action-efficient raising of skills and we will need to have 12 skills at 15 by the end of the 7th year. But, also, because I want Jacob to keep being ahead of the curve in his classes.

As the potions description showed, a D- is behind the curve for Potions class and D+ is ahead. I figure that by the end of the year that D+ is the "A" level for the year since it is required as minimums for certain charms that are required at the end of the year. Being at P- at the end of January will ensure that we will be P+ by the end of the year even on classes we don't focus on. Thus, probably being amongst the top of the class.

It does not have to be immediately, but I would like to get Ancient Runes and Arithmancy/Magical Theory up to standard with the others, preferably sooner rather than later. They are electives, not core classes, but Jacob selected the electives, so letting them lag behind in this way seems unprofessional.

[X] "This is the Road to the Top" – Tracey's goal seems to be clear. She wants to rise in ranks, however long it takes her. Her fierceness inspires you as well; this is something you can do. You will aim to win the dueling tournament at the end of this year, however farfetched that goal is. Because this feels like something that could be a lot of fun.

Gotta say this option has captured me pretty firmly. Tracey wants to git gud rise higher in the Dueling club , of course. We're of interest of her due to previous duels, during which we proved to be a capable peer. You could say a worthy rival, but I prefer to focus on the mutual respect both characters have for one another. At this point she's taken the first step down the path and is excitedly, but discretely, inviting us to walk it with her.

It could be due to the fact that I'm a sucker for the dynamic of two people with good chemistry engaging in affable, yet heated, conflict. It could be that I'm just a filthy shipper who enjoys seeing romance and that this tickles that muscle. It could also be that I find combat skills to be something one is better off with than without. Regardless, I'll be savoring the good-feels of that Reparo moment like someone working away at a gobstopper.

I agree with the Ancient Runes. I disagree that we should train Arithmancy/Magical Theory because of the +2 per 5 months of school we get thanks to the two elective classes we take combining with Ravenclaw bonus. Because of that, without any points, this is how Arithmancy/Magical Theory Develops:

End of 3rd year: 4 (D+)
End of 4th year: 8 (A-)
End of 5th year: 12 (E)
End of 6th year: 16 (0+)
End of 7th year: 20 (SSS)

This actually give us the points by which, in order to not lose point gains, we MUST hit certain targets at certain times:

By end of 5th year: We need to have at least 4 more E level skills
By middle of 6th year: We need to have 4 skills at E and 3 skills at O
By the middle of 7th year: We need to have 5 skills at E and 5 skills at O
Before the end of 7th year: We need to have 12 skills at O

Putting skills into Arithmancy/Magical Theory actually shifts the timeline foreward.

By the way, this may seem like a lot of time, but due to decreasing successes probabilities as we get higher and the needed stat increases while considering spells/potions/alchemy...it's a bit tight.

I'm calling it now, if this keeps up, one day we're going to get a major set back or lose because we didn't focus on spells as much as we should have.

Not including the Advanced Protego and assuming that we roll an average of 50 per dice, this is what we are looking at in terms of actions spent on completing spells
  • Antidote to Uncommon Poisons (Needed for exams at the end of the year) - DC: 100
    • 2 actions
  • Shrinking Solution (Needed for exams at the end of the year) - DC: 50
    • 1 action
  • Wideye Potion (Needed for exams at the end of the year) - DC: 150
    • 3 actions
  • Blue Wideye Potion – DC: 200 & 1 Vial of Acromantula Venom
    • 4 actions
  • Avifors (Needed for exams at the end of the year) – DC: 5
    • 1 action
  • Cheering Charm (Needed for exams at the end of the year) - . DC 50.
    • 1 action
  • Diffindo – . DC 50.
    • 1 action
  • Draconifors (Needed for exams at the end of the year) - DC 75.
    • 2 actions
  • Engorgio - . DC 100
    • 2 actions
  • Reducio - DC: 100
    • 2 actions
  • Expelliarmus DC 100
    • 2 actions
  • Expecto Patronum - What stops an unstoppable force? -DC 300 + New trait if learned while Lupin is Professor.
    • 6 actions
  • Glacius DC 75
    • 2 actions
  • Waddiwasi (Basic Understanding) – Charm.DC 50.
    • 1 action
For a total of 30 Personal Actions spent on learning spells. We have December until June to learn them, so 7 months. That means that we are going to want to spend a minimum of 4 Personal Actions on Spells every Month. 7*4 = 28 which gets us in the ball park. Am I wrong here? If I'm totally wrong here then feel free to correct me. But to me it looks like we need to focus on spells/potions more than anything right now.

DCs don't decrease as we work on skills. Unless you're counting mods as DC reductions, but then, mods are not 100% reliable, and it's going to take a while to get a mod to 25 or higher.

She wants us to walk this path of attempted greatness with her...so why not. Also getting those deep understandings of Draconifors and Expecto Patronum is my goal. I'll vote for whoever aims for that.

Well, the list is if we want to get every spell we have considered. Also, you forgot to include the attribute and skill bonus to learning to the 50 roll. Doesn't really matter, except for the patronum. Possibly saves a turn.

For the class required skills:

Potions:
Antidote to Uncommon Poisons (DC 100) 2 actions
Shrinking Solution (DC 50) 1 action
Wideye Potion (DC 150) 3 actions

Magic:
Avifors (DC 12) 1 action
Cheering Charm (DC 50) 1 action
Draconifers (DC 75) 2 actions
Expelliarumus (DC 100) 2 actions
Glacius (DC 75) 2 actions

So, the required spells are: 14 actions.

The ones I would love to have also are:
Expecto Patronum (DC 300) (5 turns)
Waddiwasi (1 turn)

Total of those would be 20 actions. Which, even if we start on February, would be 4 actions per month for 5 months.

True. But I was assuming that people would want the Blue Wideye Potion for the extra action it would give us. Also Reducio and Engorgio are both ridiculously useful and has a lot of utility. I can think of a lot of situations with both exploration and dueling where those spells could be applied. Diffindo also provides us a strait up potentially lethal offensives spell, which we don't actually have yet, that could be lethal on creatures we don't mind killing. All the spells are useful. But yeah, I understand that some people might not feel the same way.

I just feel that having spells like these would make us more likely to actually succeed in our Exploration ambitions and such. I'm less concerned about making the numbers go up more than I am about actually experiencing things. I also really want to explore the passage that leads to the mountains. No one seems to have discovered it in years. We are the only ones in the castle that seem to know about it. I just feel that know all/most of these spells makes our chances of exploring the area more successful.

As to the Blue Wideye Potion, I suspect that there will be a DC drop once we learn the regular Wideye Potion. I could be wrong, but I think that learning the main potion would help with the variation.

I do understand your perspective. My perspective is that I want to improve how Jacob can use the spells he does have by making him more knowledgeable and stronger (stat and skill increase). But, as we discussed a while back, most of my plans are a bit front loaded with skill increases but, once January hits, switches to spell learning. The question is can we wait 2 turns before we get into large spell delving where a majority of the actions go towards spells (and stats and skills can help with spell learning).

Otherwise, it will take more actions down the line to do the same effect as if we did skills up to P- before end of January.

Seriously, if anything is going to make us lose this quest, it's going to be over focus on our stats and skills. Because spells can give us new/actual solutions to problems and have demonstatably given us much better bonuses to combat than we'll be recieving for a damn good while otherwise.
