Negaverse: [A]drift - Prologue Sequence

"It's a beautiful night, isn't it?" Al whispers, faintly looking up into the sky.

It is, you reply. Something about today is different.

Something about today is different.

Something about today is different.

You look into the sky and you look into the sky, and the loop and the loop--

(Your hand, crashing through the endless loops and repetitions.)

One day, you looked into the stars and you found a sky unfamiliar. There is-- wrongness, a wrinkle in the fabric of the firmament that could not be unseen. It was distant, hopelessly so, and yet--

(Your hand, tremulously reaching up to grasp it.)

--so near.

It comes all at once. A thundering with neither sound nor light, and calamitous all the same.

(Your hand closes around it.)

The sky falls around you. Reality drains away. Fight, or be subsumed.

---

Your reality is being devoured by an ontologically superior entity.

Before it, you are a gnat-- a speck of dust in the eye of a thousand universes scattered to the winds.

What do you do?

[ ] Hope - In the heart blooms a fire, fierce and radiant. Despair will not take you, fatalism a faraway dream. Take up your sword and fight.

*Escape, and become a rebel. Run, and grow strong. Live, so that you may one day return.
*A negaverse quest of vengeance, and hate.

[ ] Struggle - Rage, good god, rage! Die on your feet or die a free man, there is no difference. If they are to eat you, let them choke on your corpse on the way down.

*Stay, and suffer not the ultimate cowardice. Place yourself upon the forge of the last stand, and demand an answer from a world uncaring.
*A negaverse quest of mystery boxes and surrealism.

[ ] Forget - You wake up, alarm clock an inexorable pull. The memories of the Fall slip through the cracks of your mind like tears through your fingers-- shit, you're going to be late for class!

*You are a first year (highschool) student at the Ephemeral Institution, the most powerful and highest ranked magic (and business) school in the entire world!
*A negaverse quest of urban highschool horror and magic academies.

...hang on, what's this?

[ ] Surrender - Join the whole.

[A] Struggle
Make like a fantasy elf in Imrix's quest and fight the good (and hopeless) fight.

@Kurowari Ended up a bit small.

Anyway:

[A] Struggle

Rage against the dying light! Rage against the uncaring universe!

Servant: Avenger

True Name: Kurowari

Alignment: True Hardcore

Strength: A

Endurance: C

Agility: A

Magical Energy: E

Luck: EX

Noble Phantasm: B

Class skills:

Avenger: (E-)

An avenger is someone whom gathers people's hatreds and grudges unto themselves. Kurowari simply isn't that interested in gathering people's hatred, doing so more as a side

Self-Replenishment Mana (EX) (Hardcore)

Kurowari's Self-Replenishment Mana works differently from other avengers. While he can generate a pittance for the sake of revenge, most of his mana comes from doing what he would deem 'Hardcore'. The riskier, the stupider, and the cooler the actions that he takes, the more his mana increases.

Personal skills:

Bravery (EX)

Kurowari keeps going forwards, no matter what. He cares little for odds of success, how risky the situation is, and any other factor. If he wants to do something, he will do it.

Fool's luck (A+)

Fortune favours the bold, and Kurowari is bolder than the all of them. Every time that Kurowari takes an action that would be seen as foolish or bold (or both) his luck is boosted. Since he will almost always take such an action, his luck is EX.

Noble Phantasm:

Death or glory!

A cry for battle, when used, increases all of Kurowari's parameters based on how likely he is to die. It can be used multiple times; however, it can only increase his parameters if the odds of him dying have increased since the last time he used it.

Rank: B

Type: Anti-Unit Noble Phantasm

Range: 999

Maximum Targets: Self

Well, I guess I can accept the inevitable. I did advocate for Rank strongly before, and this is +0.4; pretty good!

If you think H-DS is just a side-grade; we can still quickly switch between Stances, but not often. Hunger would still have the ability to adopt the two best possible Stances against a foe at the start of battle, something that helps us tremendously.

Two Arete isn't going to make much difference in what Sten drops; indeed, this build heavily incentivises we get more Rank from him, given how great it would be to have even more Rank for Crimson Flare and it would allow us to hold all the Stances at the same time.

And I still think Rest is the best option long term for multitude of reasons; changing the nature of the Rings is more important than any immediate reward we gain here. We can get power in other ways, especially having outscaled Apocryphal and all. Why not choose towards the future rather than the transient now?

I consider fairness a higher virtue than kindness.

Edeldross buffing has a level-up where we create a Hunger-shaped raw Edeldross construct and move it around while we fight so it stays inside our body at all times. Like superimposing a spirit on top of our body. That's called suffusion.

But today I had an idea for an additional level of enhancement. Hunger could use that method, but also create a shell of hardened Edeldross around his body. This would act as an invisible layer of armor at skin level. That's +PROT. We can move hardened Edeldross around so it could strengthen each swing of our sword like using telekinesis on our own body. That's +STR. The same technique would allow for some hardcore parkour while in midair. That's +AGI.

We could even intensify the amount of raw Edeldross used for suffusion because the raw Edeldross would all be contained inside our forcefield. That would magnify our +Stats buff without taking any additional focus on maintaining control!

This suggests a new method of Findross generation: we know that Edeldross is a precursor, but it's not clear if there's a missing ingredient or just a missing quantity. We could make a sphere of hardened Edeldross, fill it with raw Edeldross, and then compress sphere until the raw stuff inside turns into Findross (or explodes).

220 words of suggested Edeldross tactics.

One can be both kind and fair.

It is no virtue to perform a great act of heroism (growing stronger even from the act!) and then declare, "Now I shall be paid my due". It is no sin, certainly; but do not mistake it for virtue. The Ring is at our mercy here. Be kind. Be fair. Have a thought for the future of cooperation between Rings, that shining tomorrow.

Well that's a fucking wierdass way of looking at things. Doing something hard for lower cost to help someone out is generally considered a good deed even if you actually accept payment at the end of it.

Azure Ring offered us payment if we put our life on the line to save its ass. Which we did; instead of SAVING we plunging into multiple combat rounds consisting of dangerous 3 and 4 pick fights, risking our and lives or our companions. Now, Azure is finally free from millennia of endless torment and is perfectly willing to fulfill it's part of barging.

What's strange is that I don't see who is supposed to care about Ring getting rest - Azure certainly doesn't mind, and there's no real reason why Hunger would care enough to compromise his revenge over it. There is nothing really to feel good about it, as actually important part, which is to say saving the Ring from torment, is already fulfilled.

Idk, are people fishing for some kind of mystery box or something? I'm sure that getting to that 7 Arete benchmark is more important?

The only benefit seems to be that maybe in a thousand years or such (A random guess based on ring timescales of eternity) it might have an epiphany that hierarchical relationships between Rings are not the way to go. Or it might consider us a sucker to be bilked if we're asking for it like this.

It is kinda up in the air why the hatefulness goes down so much more if the Ring doesn't need the rest. Maybe it just appreciates the thought? Or, looking at what else reduces hatefulness, maybe it's subtly taking its revenge in its spare time- not that there's any real basis for that paranoia.

I swear, I've never seen any quest thread move so fast between updates. With daily updates! And still bloody 10-20 pages of discussion between them!

Though as someone without a deep understanding of the current arc, is the Azure Ring something Hunger is gonna wear and use, or hand off to someone else?

You're neglecting that Rest not only reduces our power now by offering less arete but also reduces the scaling the ring gives reducing our power in the future as well.

Hunger can't wear it himself. We need to give it to a party member or see whatever other options Rihaku offers that vote.
