[X] Who Walked Away
[X] Forebear's Blade - Iron Maelstrom

What can I say, I'm a sucker for +Mental Stability. And also I think Iron Maelstrom isn't awful, and want to see the new advancements it opens up.

Grants a major effectiveness boost in physical or romantic duels (1v1 encounters) against beings with corporeal blood, and a minor bonus in physical and romantic conflicts of any kind against such beings.
Revolting.

The less I have to think about the path of "Romance Duel effectiveness boosts", the better.

Though she is not personally formidable, Larissa Alynne commands House forces numbering dozens of Marshals, as well as High Marshal Wyvernford and two additional Soul Evokers of equivalent power used to conduct off-the-books operations.

Combat Strength: High. High Marshal Wyvernford alongside the remainder of the Alynne forces might be a match for one to two Immortals on their own should they receive blood enhancement.

So three High Marshals and a few dozen Marshals are roughly equivalent of 1.5 Immortals, presumably depending on matchups. More importantly, if we use them to fight an Immortal, we probably can't use them to effectively evacuate the place due to casualties. At best, we can take the three High Marshal equivalents with us and hope they can keep up.

Combat Strength: Significant. Aristeia Fairbright is only moderately weaker than Hunger himself. Blood enhancements can augment her significantly. Her followers are useful for causing general pandemonium, though they are hesitant to employ violence against the innocent. One or two might be Marshal-level.

On the other hand, Fairbright herself is roughly High Marshal level and is significantly empowered by our buffs due to the metaphysical potency of our bloodline. More importantly, she can also buff us. Combined that with the +++++Might, +++++++++Agility and ++ Wits of Fierce Quickening and Weapon Defeating Stance and I'd say we're more than capable of taking on an Immortal. We don't even have to fear bad match ups because we can resist bullshit teleport ambushes through Guile-Defeating Stance and a Sublime Gisena could easily hose whatever magical enemies we face. More importantly, taking out one Immortal would likely be enough to get us Ferocity Incarnate, which if its Vigor equivalent was any indication, would likely provide enough power for us to carve our way through the others.

But while that covers the power front, there's no answer to the consequences of the theft of the Ring outside of "Hope for the best". Maybe we can gamble Fairbright was in on some stuff and had insider knowledge of some kind; but that isn't enough to cover us.

If we've butchered our way through the Immortals, we can evacuate the citizens in question in our own sweet time, especially with our speed and ridiculous degree of Charisma. Considering Guile-Defeating Stance, it really wouldn't take that long to filter through the forces of the remaining houses to find someone worthy of ruling this place; certainly it's much safer than leaving it in the hands of a random stalker willing to throw in with us because we're very pretty.

Hm, facing more of the Immortals before we remove the Ring may well grant greater rewards. The buffet of buffs from Aristeia augmenting Hunger and his companions with her lineage, Hunger blood-buffing everyone, and Iron Maelstrom lending might to everyone who fights alongside him is an absolutely disgusting combination. Consider the fact that the Fairbright Legacy is a bloodline power and there may well be multiplicative synergies given how much we've invested in that tree.

Also, Aristeia's character is way more appealing than Larissa's, on account of her having... actual character. How often do we see individuals in fiction who can be accurately described as capital-G Good? Perhaps I'm just a sucker for an underdog, but Hunger respecting the resolve required to rebel against one's civilization is understandable, given Catherine's backstory.

Ok. So there's the dimensional rift that is the Inner Ring, but there's also the dimensional vortex the ring is on top of.

Fewer, more heretical minds have proposed a different question - what if the Forges were turned to the harvest of the moon itself? The Council, as befits its dignity, has not seen fit to answer so ludicrous a query. Star-stuff suffices to power all but the most esoteric applications of Inner Ring society, from power and lighting to the time-twisting Calendar Engine and even the carefully regimented Dimensional Vortex upon which the Inner Ring sits.

I was thinking destroying the vortex would be enough to prevent a highly destructive incident but I guess I'm mistaken?

This is going off pure gut feeling, but I'm sort of getting the feeling that esoteric plans to forestall the collapse and (presumptive) death of those within the false space aren't really our best bet, and we'd probably get a lot more mileage out of "hijack hypothetical PA systems and use charisma/bare threat to convince/scare everyone into leaving" plans, assuming we've got to do whatever we're trying ourselves.

The problem is that plan relies on being able to jump the Immortals one by one, and that they don't have any multiplicative synergies between themselves. We don't have this danger with Alynne's information, even outdated; prioritizing the right enemies and avoiding the bad match-ups is the key to actual defeat in detail. We will get more power when we defeat an Immortal no matter what, so why not prioritize the most important ones when given information? It's certainly more effective than basically stumbling blind here.

Plus, just letting the Ring sit there is a bad idea given they might be driven to desperate measures while faced with the downfall of their civilization. Especially if they do have a Diagram lich there, I wouldn't underestimate those. The safest action would be to just remove it as soon as possible to avoid any tricks and to just power our enemies; something we can't do if we need the Ring there for safe Evacuation. It just introduces too much risk when compared to just taking the safe route of Alynne now.

The way our Charisma is, it's like we've got a 50% baseline penalty(Uttermost+Punctured Soul). 30 percent of that gets cancelled out by Edeldross Adept, 45 percent in advanced enhancement conditions bringing us to 80-95 percent of our baseline charisma. I was honestly surprised we got a high charisma pick bonus.

Our mental attributes are reduced 15 percent by comparison from punctured soul. 45 percent if it's Wisdom given Uttermost but intelligence is what matters per Rihaku. 30 percent of that is cancelled by baseline Edeldross enhancement, 45 percent with advanced, meaning we are operating with 115 to 130 percent of our baseline intelligence.

992 Words of analysis about vote options. More analysis may show up later.

My first vote was rushed to try to preserve formatting on my preferred option. I'll be voting (& writing a reaction) in support of the plot option that gives us all our objectives: Information, Allies to Blood Buff (!), Minimal Civilian Casualties, Long-Term Resources.

[X] Larissa of House Alynne
  • Information
    • By recruiting a central House, we are likely to learn a lot about the Temple's inner defenses from Larissa.
  • Allies to Buff
    • The obvious play is to buff various rebellion forces
    • The second obvious play is to buff the Tiller Wyrms themselves
      • Rank 7 Blood Buffs on multiple Dreadbeasties. Just imagine the chaos.
  • Minimal Civilian Casualties
    • Genocide is bad
    • Establishing Hunger's characterization as a charismatic leader is very, very good for our long-term Geas task
  • Long-Term Resources
    • Acquiring precious metals and currency is a good way to ensure we can continue paying Aeria
    • Acquiring the good-will of a civilization in the process of rebuilding itself is a good way to shape the future of that civilization
      • The Temple Remnant could be a major ally in the Voyaging Realm!

This leaves one pick and ~6.1 Arete. I will be operating under the assumption that we will produce > .1 Arete over the next 24 hours, despite the American Independence Day holiday (You all post in time zones implying Asia/Europe anyway.) So up to 1 pick and up to 7 Arete.

0 Pick Builds
[] Augment Dominion: Blood
-Meh. Banking 1 pick until after we clear the Temple presupposes victory against every complication between now and then. We've already gated most of the power of Crimson Flare behind finishing the Temple. We should not defer any more power grabs.

[] Stances.
===> Discussed Below.

1 Pick Builds
[ ] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear

oof. Superseded by Blood Enhancement option Fierce Quickening.

[ ] The Ring of Power - Dominion
+ We're about to be at war, so getting a rank boost pertaining to War is a good use of picks/Arete. It is likely that leading an entire house could open the rare Preeminence: War pick we need to eventually unlock Ruling Ring. More importantly, I think, is the narrative beat that this implies: Hunger is done playing around and is directing the Will of the Ring towards dismantling the Temple society.

- Cost of 2 Arete is somewhat painful, but not insurmountable.

[ ] Fierce Quickening
+ AGI was our chief defensive stat before Vigor Incarnate. It is still better to avoid attacks now that we have a functional PROT stat. Even overland speed has been shown as a useful defensive tactic! WIT also helps us to avoid traps like if an Immortal is just stalling for time. This is a good pic for NOT DYING, and it works towards unlocking a future BLURB at Fierce Quickening x3.

- If we tie ourselves to a particular army or tactical squad, our overland travel won't be relevant as a defensive measure because our companions aren't automatically fast.

[ ] Exalted Spirit
+ We finally have allies who will be under blood buffs! Making the rebellion a little bit more sympathetic and a little bit smarter will help to overcome the inertia of an ancient society. Hunger's own stats might be equally important: -Heartlessness will be relevant when we leave with the Ring. +CHA gives more PROT! +WIT helps us to avoid traps like an immortal stalling for time, or battlefield tactics that might separate us from our troops or wastefully endanger our allies.

- Cost of 2 Arete is somewhat painful, but not insurmountable. Diverting power to allies does not help Hunger overpower the Immortals.

[ ] Evening Sky - Opalescence
- oof. Superseded by pics unlocked later in the quest that have the benefit of Power Creep

[ ] Evening Sky - Iridescence
This is a 2-pick option.

[ ] Evening Sky - Pearlescence
This is a 3-pick option.

Of the single-pick options, the best two also cost Arete. I'm inclined to grab Dominion: War because it has a powerful Rank effect while also providing a neat narrative beat: Hunger isn't wasting any more time. The gloves are off & the War has begun. Exalted Spirit is nice but more effective for the cleanup, when political maneuvering by the rebels will rely heavily on INT/CHA.

However, there's an additional dimension of the vote: We can buy a Stance for 7 Arete. The options are

  • Magic-Defeating Stance
    • Curse mitigation, magic defense, improved attack vs. magic
    • Builds to All Defeating Stance
  • World-Defeating Stance
    • +.2 Rank, ++Luck, ++Intelligence, ++Protection
    • ++++++Protection further against environmental harms
    • *Shelters wielder's powers from suppression or negation, even that resulting from a lack of magic or magical structures within the world.
      • This allows cool Gisena tactics with Tide of Nullity!
    • *5x Power of Ruin against non-supernatural foes or phenomena beyond an human's ability to defeat.
    • Builds to All Defeating Stance
  • Weapon-Defeating Stance
    • +++++AGI, +++++Might
    • 5x Power of Ruin to sunder, intercept or destroy all weapons, natural or constructed
    • +++++Protection against all weapons, natural or constructed
    • Builds to All Defeating Stance
  • Hero-Defeating Stance
    • ++Might, ++Agility, +Wisdom, +0.2 external Rank
    • Halve the effects of enemy Rank if it is greater than your own.
    • Halve the effects of being outnumbered, if you are outnumbered.
    • Does not build to All Defeating Stance

We are nearly guaranteed to earn .9 Arete. So we could safely buy any Stance alongside Fierce Quickening. Of those pairings, Magic Defeating Stance provides the best chance against the Soul Evocation characteristic of the Temple; this is a strong argument in favor of M-DS given that we are fighting the Temple's Immortal Guardians. Weapon Defeating Stance provides the largest AGI boost, for the best overall STATS. Hero-Defeating Stance reduces the impact of enemy Rank; a decisive advantage for our STATS-heavy build going in to the final fight. Of these, only Hero-defeating does not contribute towards the All Defeating Imperial purchase later on. My vote with a 7-Arete Limit has to be
[] Fierce Quickening
[] Hero-Defeating Stance

BUT! We can earn more than .9 Arete given a holiday in the States and a Weekend everywhere else! Imagine the following:
[X] The Ring of Power - Dominion
[X] World-Defeating Stance

We'd have an effective Rank of 5.45 in War, which applies to any contest with real and serious stakes. Our blood buffs would operate at Rank 7.25, which is in the range of the Tyrant and pre-curse Hunger. We'd have ++LUCK, ++INT, ++PROT, and shelter from suppression or negation when we enter a facility designed to suppress and negate the powers of a Ring. The Magic-defeating stance might be better against the Immortals' Soul Evocations but the World-defeating stance can protect us against being bound by the same chains that bind the Azure Ring.

Yeah, okay.

[X] Larissa of House Alynne
[X] Weapon-Defeating Stance
[X] Fierce Quickening

Considering most of Aristeia's buddies are a bunch of randos, with like 1 being Marshal level, there's really no benefit at all to taking it with Iron Maelstrom: they'll still get mulched by anyone of relevance. A much better use of them would be to send them to raise merry hell elsewhere, which only dubiously benefits from Maelstrom and can do without besides. As for this, so long as we pick up a one pick along the way, we can still get Ferocity Incarnate while still S A V I N G the Arete to make it happen.

And it'll be funny to see Gisena doing some dunking anyway.

EDIT:

[X] Fierce Quickening X2

Added for tactics.

We have Gisena as a temporary workaround for our issue with magic . WDS could help with suppression and negation. Still I would be happy with MDS as well.

But, there is also a third option. Bring your Arete mining picks and enter the gulag mines. Gather enough to buy both MDS and WDS and smash that puny temple.
I ask you this - are you bad enough dude to generate that much Arete in one update.

World Defeating Stance is significantly better than the Magic- or Weapon- Defeating Stances. World Defeating Stance respects the fact that we're heading to a containment cell designed to suppress and extract power from a Ring of Power. We are a Ring of Power. Fighting an Immortal while suffering from their Anti-Ring measures is a quick ticket to a bad end describing Hunger's eternal stay in the Temple of the Blood Moon.

barfing out some 700 words of thoughts on which ally to pick

Some initial thoughts for the moment.

Silver Horde. Bunch of Gramps who, judging from the description, are all ready for one last death march. Free themselves from the curse, or die trying. It has limited uses, and theyre free. Picking this option will allow us to take the more costly Advancements for Hunger. Basically powering him up enough to have a more realistic chance of success at stealing the Ring.

Which, as has been mentioned, would lead to the Temple Residents' inability to access their Soul Evocation, barring the Immortals. In other words, this turns the Silver Horde into mere cannon fodder if we just want to go on ahead and steal the ring. Sure, they'll be able to somewhat handle and inconvenience 2 Immortals at best. But it'll most likely end with a good chunk of them dead and dying, and locking that fate in place once the Ring is in our hands.

-Fire and Forget option
-Frontloads power into Hunger since it allows for more picks.
-Mostly gonna be for distractions and misdirection, and would be of little help for any other concerns we may have.
-Modest Intel of the temple, but arguably less impactful than critical spots.

Fairbright. Peer-Combatant of Hunger. Has access to Buffs that would strengthen Hunger for the duration of the rebellion. Can be provided Buffs by Hunger to ensure she can at least 1v1 an Immortal with a reasonable chance of success and enough fire power to take on a couple more. They've got some stacked firepower too, even without accounting for Fairbright herself.

The best part here though is their naivety and thirst for J U S T I C E.

They're gonna do all the hero things. All the really captivating and loud things. They are going to do this fair and square. Save the innocents, destroy the evil people, and probably (hopefully) die trying. Lead Fairbright would probably do the same, and probably cause of their strict sense of honor, justice, heroism, and other shounen protagonist details, they'll probably want to repay Hunger the favor.

Which would, hopefully, gloss over the idea that Hunger can actually give less of a damn. Age and Treachery is a useful thing. Even more useful when the victims have horse blinders on. Helpful, even, that they've got some critical pieces of information that might allow Hunger increased chances on extracting the Ring. And, unlike the Silver Horde, not all of them will turn into fodder when the Ring stops powering their Soul Evocations. Severely diminished, probably, but hoping it'll be enough to burn as bright as their namesake.

-Potentially susceptible to Hunger's Age and Treachery shenanigans
-Semi-Hero Units with 1 Hero Unit.
-Really got the Hero thing going. More likely to act Young and Vigorous.
-Provides some actionable and worthwhile intel.
-Will probably end up trying to do more hero stuff after the victory but no concrete description of how they'll handle the survivors.

Larissa option. Uh. Fucking costly in terms of pick power, but no Arete expenditure which is great. Allows for some combination thereof for Hunger's own advancements. Gives us a bonafide High-Marshall to fight alongside with. And 2 equivalent combatants specced for Black Ops. And a lot of other worthwhile combatants. Has the most resources available amongst all the choices, and pretty much has a more impactful vantage point in regards to fucking up the Inners. Not to mention they're also the only option that allows for the systemic rescue and rehabilitation efforts for Post-Ring events.

- bundle of good effects over all for 2 picks
- 3 hero units, 2 of which are black ops. has a bunch of semi hero units. Wyvernford dude was mentioned in the stuff aeira stole before? Might be real useful for intel
- actually has actionable intel on a bunch of things. some outdated information for the Immortals, but better than none at all. Hunger flying by the seat of his pants is mitigated somewhat, with Nightmare Praetor hopefully triggering for some bonuses
- larissa a fucking simp
- if wyvernford is a beast master then that's just + points cause we can maybe get an actual dog for letrizia
- can actually rescue the civilians and has the resources to keep casualties to a minimum
- hunger probably has to deal with harem protag problems, but he's old enough to know how to avoid it.
- makes our lives infinitely simpler

I don't think we'd need Wo-DS with Alynne, given she would have information on the Ring's defenses and could warn us about specific anti-Ring measures, which we could then smash with Gisena. She is just such a convenient option! Leave the complicated stuff for her and let us do the smashing.
As I said, I really liked your plan. In fact; I'd go so far to say that it was the best possible plan for choosing Fairbright, and that if anyone's interested in her still they should copy your former Vote. 9 Agi, 5 Str and Con, 2 Wits and 6 additional protection against weapons all buffed by Fairbright, blood and Edeldross is insanely strong and a crazy boost in power and best suited to the snowballing strategy to deal with the Immortals. It's just what comes after that's iffy.

Changed my mind. I think that +mental stability is more than worth it. Hunger needs to heal.

Y'know what would be good for mental stability? Not putting the civilians in danger. Any plan with Fairbright that tries to remedy the aftermath of our revolt does so at the cost of lowering our effectiveness against the Immortals themselves. Plans that deal with the Immortals most effectively lack answers for what will happen once we take the Ring.

With Alynne, we are not stuck with this dichotomy! She basically deals with the aftermath on her own while contributing tons of combat power. Plus information is essentially power as well; given our strategy of targeting them where they are weak. Knowing what Immortals to prioritize is incredible and might actually be key to bringing the Temple down. She was locked behind 10 Cha for a reason, folks.

Larissa is a good pick because it lets us blood-buff the Tiller Wyrms.

World-defeating Stance is a good pick because it prevents being affected by Anti-Ring suppression in-use against the Azure Ring, and it affords a second layer of defense against accidentally killing everybody in a dimensional collapse.

Dominion: War is a good pick because it provides a strong narrative beat w/r/t Hunger putting his foot down & ending the suffering of the Ring in the most efficient way possible. Rank is a good side effect of this pick. So is the potential for unlocking Preeminence: War.

Now that I think about it: Do we have to buy a stance now before we get any intel from Larissa / Fairbright? Maybe we should S A V E
