I think it's mostly mundane skill, Abduction's effectively barred to us until we unlock new panoply slots. Not that we have enough Arete to go around Abducting stuff with impunity, Artifacts don't feed themselves!

K, that does starkly reduce Shadowlords value to me, Theft is a rare stat, and a chunk of the potential for this advancement is tied up in it.

Don't get me wrong, stealth is nice, I love playing stealth solo builds, but I considered the theft unlock to be a third of the value of the pick, and if Abduction is completely locked it's really not.

Updated the index, please ping me if you think something's missing.

Anyway, I'm tempted to just go 2x Fierce Quickening here to S A V E and unlock another 2-Arete blood advancement. Shadowlord's powerful and compelling, but I don't think it's exceptionally so for a 7 Arete option? And the cost in time so soon after we elected to infiltrate... oof. At this rate we won't clear the Temple before the Apocryphal's back online. On the other hand, I don't want to do DA like that.

Vigor Incarnate's very efficient, Edeldross plays its FOMO card well in addition to being really good. Kurowari's post convinced me Dominion's getting slept on a bit, the eternal curse of competing against the new hotness. "War, what is it good for?" Quite a lot, actually, we can expect the buff to be consistently active vs. the Inners and our Rank's starting to trail. But most significantly, we'd be making progress toward Ruling Ring.

Dear god, though, the Forebear's Stances are fucking amazing. The Flashbuy Force is recruiting new voters; all the frugality of S A V E but with added safety!

Probably won't stick with this, but is a viable option.

[X] +1 pick below
[X] Edeldross Adept

All stats boosting is great when we don't have a specific strategy in mind and may well swap our position immediately.

[X] +1 pick below
[X] Evening Sky: Shadowlord

Let's finally give Evening Sky bros what they want..

I would have preferred Vigor incarnate because I actually want to interact with the temple fucks but it doesn't seem to be gaining traction.

As a card-carrying member of the Evening Sky gang, how can I choose otherwise? I didn't want to infiltrate, but having elected to do so it behooves us to select options that capitalize on that choice.
The current plan is a social inflitration though, taking Shadowlord would move us towards a more tradtional style instead. Shadowlord doesn't really make us any better at inflitrating it just opens up more options for how we go about it. The guaranteed all stats Adept provides seems better since it compounds our advantage.

wait shit I have no clue what the heck goes into soul evocation
uh I'll just treat it like cultivation
so meditation and drugs
sounds reasonable enough
also I will assume they have easily concealable small guns
also do you know how many tyrant procs I almost had in this encounter, like "Name yourself" or "Prove it"
keeping one in though
also I know I said vanreir's corpse came with the blade but imagine hunger just carrying the corpse around and I kinda can't so we'll just pretend he's doing that shit later
insert one of your own embarrassing childhood memories because I really don't want to think of a good one, or two
technically finished in the day I promised, yes
probably fucked up the characterization but like
whatever I'm too done to care at this point

NEGAVERSE: ERII QUEST PT 2

Winning vote was [X]Conjure and [X]Blade. Asset prioritization relies on the results of this vote, so it has not been closed.

The foundation of status is power. 'Pierce through, even if it cannot be pierced' is the essence of the Unerring Blade, but even the most practiced pierce will fail without a blade to pierce with; no scheme will raise a single non-Evoker to the Inner Temple. So, when faced with the reality of her brother's death, is it any surprise Erii chose to attempt to awaken power of her own?

The necessary medicines had long been ready; while she had never planned to awaken in the near future, sheltered under Vanreir's aegis as she was, awakening had long been treated as a constant of life as a member of the nobility of the Middle Temple; it was not so much a question of if, but of when. Even as degraded as the Amarlt were, the expectations remained. She knew the meditations required, had learned them when young and prepared herself for this moment. All that remained was to—

The front door opened. As her brother's routine involved doing all chores, they had never had servants; only he and she had copies of the key. A messenger would knock, even if his key was recovered from his corpse. Either he was alive, gloriously alive, or this was no messenger, but his killer. She drew the holdout pistol from its strap and crept towards the stairs; even if she would surely fall to any who could slay her brother, she wouldn't die without a fight.

Peering toward the entrance, she saw not her brother, but a one-armed, one-eyed swordsman. Had her brother had left those wounds? She took aim, only to be interrupted by her enemy's shout.

"I bear a message from Vanreir, Erii!"

She would not be fooled; any such message would be a dying message, a last wish from the damned. As she shot at him, she cried "Like I'd trust his killer!"

In one swift motion, the crippled swordsman drew his blade and cut the projectile from the air.

"He's not exactly dead. Or his soul isn't, at any rate."

Erii froze; while she did not lower the gun, her grip slackened somewhat. "What proof do you have?"

"He told me about that one time, when you were eight, and you ..."

Flushing intensely, Erii shot at him again, to predictable lack of effect. "Okay, I believe you now, shut up!"

"But don't you need to be sure? How about we discuss some other things only the two of you should know? For example, when you were six and you ..."

Eventually, the tyrannical unearthing of her childhood traumas complete, he introduced himself as Hunger, revealed that Vanreir's remnants were imprisoned in his soul, and handed over the Blade.

Erii has decided to attempt to awaken her Soul Evocation. Also, a crippled, one-eyed swordsman has appeared with Vanreir's corpse and Blade. He is the Imprisoner, and he claims to speak for Vanreir, or whatever is left of him.

What power does she awaken, if successful? Selection will affect unlock chances. While only one may be selected now, the others may not necessarily be lost. Currently, base chance is at 55%. Sufficiently accurate guesses at the nature of Erii's Soul Evocation will increase this significantly, up to 20%.

[ ] Searing: The power of a thousand suns, emanating in waves of amaranthine light. Darkness is lawless; illumination is the imposition of law.

* The presence of the wielder amplifies significantly; in combat, can apply Pressure as if an Accretion wielder.

* Minor achievements permit the emission of amaranth light and flame from any portion of the body, though hands and eyes are easiest. Higher achievements expand the spiritual self to extrude from the physical form; detection is empowered significantly, and the wielder is always physically considered to be in the most beneficial position within the area of the spiritual self. Spiritual self's size depends on Rank. The flame is initially relatively mundane, but additional properties can be developed. With significant exertion, will be able to create Laws applicable to every entity within spiritual self; basic applications are commands like "It is forbidden to move," while more complex applications can change physics, then metaphysics.

* The simplest of the applications: +10% unlock chance

* Most obvious power, initially; preserve 4 Assets.

*
Law to maximize motivation! Law to increase power! Imposing internal rules has high utility, even before you can just suppress everyone with your massive soul.

[ ] Incandescence: Mysteries are fire. Truth burns. Extinguishing mystery creates an enigma; igniting it destroys minds.

* The wielder gains effectiveness in matters involving other entities, depending on the quantity of their secrets the other party does not know. Modifier improves with skill; initially 20% for someone with no knowledge of existence.

* Minor achievements permit the burning of personal information from other entities' minds. Higher achievements permit the divulging of secrets unknown to ignite an entity with madness-inducing amaranth flames. Unmitigated, this will cause a proportional decrease in mental statistics as well as physically searing them, and it cannot be snuffed out by conventional means. Forgetting all related secrets will extinguish the flames, though entities who are freed by this method will not be immune to a repeated application of the same secrets. Baring 90% or greater of related secrets in one burst will destroy sentience.

* Being much more intelligent pays dividends; Stress reduced to 20%.

* Relatively complicated: no change in unlock chance.

* Not exactly flashy and impressive initially, but effectiveness pays off; preserve 3 Assets.

*
Can now tell people "knowing my secrets is dangerous"

* What a godly schemer power

[ ] Liberator: The blade cuts through all chains, all cages, all prisons. The tyranny of the mortal coil cannot match the unsurpassed sword; the prison of the body shall no longer harbor the soul, and death shall hold no dominion.

* Unlocked by [ ]Blade.

* Minor achievements permit Soul-Slicing attacks, which wound the tether of the soul to the body, and Soul-Severing attacks, which destroy the harmony of the soul and body and cause the spirit to escape, an almost always lethal occurrence for those without applicable abilities. The latter are highly strenuous. Higher achievements permit more delicate spiritual surgery, which allows modification of Soul Evocations; higher still is the cleaving of mortality, permitting resurrection from but a vestige of spirit and eliminating the shackle of lifespan.

* Erii's hope of one day reviving her brother will reduce Stress to 0%, if successful.

* Very tough to develop: -10% unlock chance

* Pretty hard to use nonlethally; preserve 1 Asset unless you kill someone in public, in which case their immense suffering will strike fear into more obvious interlopers and preserve 2 Assets.

* Have to convince Hunger to let Erii cut Vanreir out of his soul

* She could always just try to kill him, I suppose

* This application is antithetical to the Imprisoner, so he won't be able to help you much even if he wants to

Also, select another participation bonus.

[ ] +1 reroll for Soul Evocation unlock

[ ] Gain +Imprisoner

[ ] -
20% Stress

Indeed. The combination of Guile-Defeating and World-Defeating Stance would be good here, though that leaves you a bit low on conventional combat power. Weapon-Defeating + Magic-Defeating might make sense for a pure combat route, banking on Infiltration failing.

nier: gestalt, far gestalt, wherever you are gestalt

On top of which it also gives you immunity to sound- and music-based attacks! A niche that may at some point become incredibly relevant!

All stats boosting is great when we don't have a specific strategy in mind and may well swap our position immediately.

I think the Stealth route is the lowest risk strat!

Thinking on it, the Lunar Ring is probably aware of other rings in this Universe. At least more so than we are. So we can probably gain a lot of information about how bad a contest of primacy will be by freeing it.

Hmm. Now I do want to save arete, because the sooner we get Pillars the sooner we get to start taking advantage of that ridiculousness. (We are past the halfway point to getting it, in terms of arete. And unlike the ring it is only a single pick.)

[X] +1 pick below
[X] Edeldross Adept

Back to this while I think, then.

I'm still waiting for someone to try and nail Hunger with a soporific attack so he can laugh and activate his metaphorical trap card.

Man, that WtC sequence was not good for my blood pressure.

Edit: Apparently autocorrupt capitalizes pressure for me now?

And now for something completely different -

[X] +.75 Arete
[X] Fierce Quickening

My friendship with Ruling Ring has ended, Once and Future is my new best friend.

Aka we should be at about 14~15 Arete right now, which is very close to getting the Once and Future. With 0.75 Arete bonus and old discount putting it at 24, getting it in approx three updates should be doable.

Of course, this would commit us to getting Sword focused Special Advancement, which feels really grating, but it is what it is. Getting All-Defeating Stance should be rather simple given that they are good value and cost no picks, and if go for Rank we will eclipse Rank 10 in no time.

Rank build? In my AST quest? More likely than you think!

But yeah, I'm unsure if thread is willing to do contest of primacy so this is working option B.

We could take the Ultimate Anti-Synergy route and take Once and Future first, then go Ring? Unironically a potent build, but the juicy Special Advancements are too good to pass up for any voterbase, I think

If we pick Shadowlord by the time we get to the temple we'll only have 2 apocryphal free days left. Assuming it'll take us a day to get to the inner temple and negotiate an agreement or sneak in that'll leave us with a single day remaining before everything starts going to hell again.

Taking shadowlord almost guarantees the next proc will be while we're surrounded by inner temple denizens who probably outclass us and will be tipped off by the Apocryphal to our presence.

I'm thinking we can delay that choice a bit and try to get info out of the Lunar Ring, since it's been here much longer and been awake. It probably knows if a Ruling Ring exists, at least. And if so perhaps a rough power level. (I'm surprised Hunger can't tell, actually. You'd think a Ruling Ring would exert influence over a lesser one).

An interesting strategy! Very practical.

I'm still waiting for someone to try and mail Hunger with a soporific attack so he can laugh and activate his metaphorical trap card.

Man, that WtC sequence was not good for my blood Pressure.

And that's why you should always just shoot them! Escalate the conflict into areas where you're proficient!

You gotta get Special Advancement if you want Once and Future - one of those is absolutely crucial for Rank build.
I'm thinking we can delay that choice a bit and try to get info out of the Lunar Ring, since it's been here much longer and been awake. It probably knows if a Ruling Ring exists, at least. It just feels very awkward.

For the sake of bringing it up, I realized Exalted Spirit+Reroll may be a viable 1 pick option that boosts the odds of our infiltration succeeding.
This really, really pains me to say... but an infiltration mission is the last time we should be taking -heartlessness.

This is already pushing the bounds of what Hunger is willing to stomach. A less heartless Hunger probably wouldn't be willing to stab the inner temple in the back to free the ring. Or would hesitate more in doing so, which creates vulnerabilities.

Yeah. It's pretty great.

[X] +1 re-roll during Infiltration
[X] Exalted Spirit

That should be enough to make success during infiltration likely while only spending 2 arete.

Um, there are things other than Abduction that theft is good for, you know? Well, I mean -- the only purpose of theft is not to Abduct a new panoply! It's to be able to steal things. Artifacts, potions, weapons, armors. Whether to enrich yourself, or to deny the enemy their stuff. You can steal orders and papers, or signet rings, or money...

'Not being able to Abduct an artifact' does not make theft somehow useless.

In fact, given that we took the Ring from the Tyrant's dead body, and the Evening Sky from the Pirate's dead body... we didn't need or use some kind of magical super-theft for 2 out of 3 of our panoply! So I would say that the primary usage of theft isn't for Abducting panoply. Which... isn't a surprise, really.

If theft is one third of Shadowlord's value to you, then it is not lessened at all by not being able to Abduct panoply...
