Preeminence: Passion has been mentioned as being rare, iirc. For Dominion, we've been able to take either War or Passion in every vote so far.
Logically speaking, "Fishing" is defined with regards to certain constraints... constraints which Hunger is passionate about following. Doom of the Tyrant only specifies that Hunger cannot be in a subordinate social role. It does not say that we must upend every power structure we encounter:
Emphasis mine. It is our own rule, custom, law, and authority that compels us to fish. We are specifically interested in succeeding in capturing an aquatic animal while using the subset of skills and abilities permitted by the activity "fishing."
There is a risk of rejecting a silly custom like having to donate our catch, but it is not a certainty of disaster as you suggest here.

The point about rules and Tyrant is pertinent, I'm not sure how official any actual rules would be though, considering the menagerie of inhabitants in the encampment. If Hunger just dunks on everyone and brings in the most impressive catch while paying no attention to the unspoken precedent I don't actually think it would be a huge deal.

Okay, so we just now, minutes ago, won a huge vote for the sword-enthusiast voters. Let's throw a bone to the rest and pick up the Ring of Power here. We can save some of our Arete while building towards an EFB, that's a pretty good deal. Plus, if we heal Versh, we can get a couple more 1-2 picks; we might be able to get Opalescence and Iridescence and have less shitty defenses!

I suppose it's possible an inner resident will join the fishing contest, but that seems unlikely.
Except for the part where we get the biggest fish and everyone else goes home a loser?
The greatest pleasure is to outfish your enemies and humiliate them before you, to rob them of their fish and see their bait bathed in tears, to ride their fishing boats and clasp to your bosom their fishing rods and nets.
Anyways, it's possible the only rule will be "Biggest fish wins" and there won't be an issue.

I don't care which build option we pick but I really, really want to patch up the mecha. The plan to get a bit of boost off of killing Astral beasts sounds good, and having Verschlengorge be actually powerful enough to contribute when we fight Ber sounds good too.

We're compelling ourselves to fish with the desire to fish, but that says absolutely nothing about following the rules of a contest. A normal person might trivially accept some minor inconveniences from rule following for the pleasure of participating in a contest. Hunger will not. Again, this is just fishing by ourselves but much worse.
And also risky, seeing as we'd be doing this in the three day window where we shouldn't be potentially provoking trouble.
Why the fuck did we take a permanent wound with a shorter concerted debuff period instead of the weaker debuff that we could immediately act with if all of you are just going to immediately go out and do the riskiest possible shit?

Yes, but it's complicated. Cutting something away doesn't destroy it, so the wound will 'bounce' to the closest + weakest target. You can however learn to 'deflect' it towards your preferred targets, but powerful opponents can easily contest this if they're aware. Also, you do have the Ring of Blood for healing.

It would be an even greater risk to leave these fish alone and allow them to gather strength and power. It's best if we cut them down immediately, before the apocryphal curse can use them against us.
