It's possible that Ber is the other R-type, of course. But our potential for progression far outstrips his own. For him to be the other R-type means they have severely underestimated our growth.
Ber is actually stronger than us at the moment. They probably don't know our growth doesn't have a limit. And doesn't slow down, as long as we have worthy opponents.

So all things considered, he's probably not beyond reason. But we have to be something he doesn't expect, can't put down, and won't want to ignore. I'm sad Gisena's not here, but then she'd probably die when the Thrust turns out to be Null-immune.
Amusingly thanks to his soul situation Gisena could probably do really nasty things with even a glancing blow of nullity.

Oh, and I support Box's methods. It's a good thought. What I have requires an in... and that may just give us the wedge we need. If we can get him receptive the realization that everything he knows is doomed - and that we intend a far less destructive end than he can expect from others - should be more than enough.

JUSTINIAN'S GHOST: See you tomorrow son
Oh, and someone on a discord noted that his father is probably vulnerable to persuasion as well. And given he's the Blade of the thrust if we convince him... Well, that kinda removes the threat.

Did the Negaverse!Vanreir's voters literally pick EchoSpam every chance they got?

This guy is literally Barest (Thrust) Cut!

There's a Discord for this quest?

Additionally, this guy must be really strong that our odds against him are still really stacked against us, when he only has one limb working, one eye working, and one lung working. Wait...

But we're not telling him not to put his eggs in a single basket. We're asking him to throw away the basket that has existed perfectly well for who knows how long (centuries? more?) and invest his eggs in a complete unknown because... it might be better? They have their own Ring that gives them a means of growing quickly, and it's something he knows well and can be sure of.
It seems like his father was banished from the inner ring for some reason, whatever it was it wasn't something he agreed with since it was called politcal manouvering and he was upset when his superior didn't say his father would have been proud of him as well as his grandfather. So it's not like returning to the inner ring is a particularly safe bet if his families rivals are still around.

There is not. It's a discord for another quest a couple people who play this one also happen to be on. We got talking in its off topic channel.

Don't really have much energy for strategizing in me, though I find myself idly wondering if it's worth it to dig into our Gin strategizing from Bleach Quest.
Otherwise, maybe try to close distance to get within his guard and make thrusting movements awkward? But with the stat differential that's a hard ask cause even if we use multiple forms and faking our death to get in, he can probably gain distance again, so we'd have to make those moments count for a lot.

That aside, I do kinda feel like focus and dialogue is an odd combination. Digging into our PTSD probably doesn't lend itself to genuine dialogue and, even if you don't wanna run, Resolve is there to turn this into a manly man talk between mirroring men!
I suppose Focus and its effectiveness boost does somewhat lean into the analytic social combat angle of Dialogue more intent on manipulation than conversation, but that's a mean thing to do!
Imagine if he lets us go and then has to face the consequences of doing so only to realize that we bamboozled him rather than genuinely connecting!

Hmm, I like the winning votes so far. Diplomancing but ready to fight if things go sour!

Inserted tally

I want cool fights! Don't vote to run away, that lessens the chance of a cool fight!

That said;
[X] Orm Embar

The strategic Omake reserve wasn't a meme after all. Godspeed, you bastard. I want to see you this just for that.

Hmm. Wouldn't resolve be better at increasing our chances to win due to greater effectiveness and increase in the chances for FOR to activate?

Ber showing up would be hilarious. ...And frankly he actually wouldn't be a bad party member if he could get past the whole "seeing people as just xp" thing.

[X] R-Type #1
[X] Preparation: Dialogue
[X] Preparation: Resolve

As cool as Orm's post was I think I'll change back to Resolve since I think it's more likely to be something he responds to and more suited for diplomacy in the first place. If he stabs us and we grab his sword maybe we can force him to talk to us even if he doesn't want to listen!

Plus taking a sword through the gut as a show of your determination to the enemy you're trying to talk down is just a really cool image!

Ceathlynn "Catherine" of Amarlt

Physical *****
Social * / ***
Mental **

Considered a failed prototype in the Amarlt family's disavowed eugenic super-soldier program, Catherine was relegated to the role of a lab assistant in the Astral Exploratory of her nominal House. A high-energy rift experiment gone wrong displaced her in space and time. Hurled centuries into the future, she is now the sole pureblooded inheritor of the Amarlt lineage, the main branch having long consumed itself in a fiery internecine war.

Though she possesses peak human reflexes, agility, kinesthetic sense, bodily coordination and melee combat skills, lacking any supernatural abilities she is little more effective than most humans against soldiers armed with guns. However, virtually any form of supernatural augmentation or equipment would act as powerful force multipliers for her. For example, she has an astonishing talent for piloting advanced weapons systems. Reserved and timid, she has not yet found her self-confidence in social situations, though she displays implacable will in the pursuit of any mission assigned.
This is what we were told about Cat during character creation and by extension what we know about the Amarlt family outside of last update. I think Rihaku also said the characters we didn't pick would still exist somewhere so instead of trying to assassinate his sister by tracing his bloodline we might pick up on this long last family member he didn't know existed.

We know the main branch self imploded and they owned an "Astral Exploratory". That probably doesn't refer to the ring civilization since the Astral is where all the monsters attacking Versh keep teleporting in from. That would mean Van is probably a member of a side branch of the family since no pureblooded members exist in the present. Not sure where this puts the Forebear in relation to them though? Head of the family? The Amarlt's could themselves be an offshoot of the Forebears descendants?

Greater combat effectiveness, but I believe Focus also helps diplomacy, while Resolve is solely for combat.

Instead of trying our chances at convincing a guy we barely know anything about, let's just kill him! Now is not the time for waffling over a baseline 10% chance of success, now is the time for action and fearless assault! Combine Resolve and Focus to actually stand a chance at fighting him, instead of getting epilogued by a single, fell-reaving blow. We have no clue how far his range is or whether or not he'll attack us on sight! Thus, the safest move is to attack, if we ever want to clear the Temple.

@Orm Embar Just a suggestion here, but I think Resolve might actually be better for Dialogue? If we want to use the tack of dismantling his linear and simplistic worldview as flawed; then the commitment to take his thrust head on and punish him for it seems like a better fit than evoking memories of the Tyrant; something I suspect may even be ant-synergistic with Dialogue, considering our past. Plus, it's even better if diplomacy fails! The devastating consequence is harsh, but I think worth it if it mean victory here; plus, there's only a chance of it, while the Trauma is guaranteed! So can I urge you to consider?
