I'm becoming concerned that Rihaku is offering more and more suicidal options just to see if we'll take them because he thinks it'll be funny.

We do have chill of the Grave... Honestly my main issue with the safer routes is, at the end of the day we still have to enter the Temple. This suggested route feels like the most trivial of the obstacles it could put in our way. Once we're actually inside and within its power it seems like things will be much harder. So if we can't handle this I worry we'll just get punked quite shortly after stepping inside.

Well yeah if we actually win this gamble it'll be totally worth it. I don't think we've ever actually straight up lost a Rihaku quest before so it'll be a novel experience either way. I'd like to vote for Quickest instead but the shinies and the glory are too alluring to resist.

Hubris is a coward's word!

Reconsidered, though I'm still worried about further -% effectiveness conditions before we enter the Temple. And that's if we don't get a more specialized penalty. We're already dependent on Fell-Handed Stroke for DPS, and if any of our moves end up disabled or we get some kind of anti-synergy with our teammates, we're going to be so far up shit creek that the paddle is literally our corpse.

If you don't think things like that are possible, just ask yourself: wouldn't that be Interesting?

The route is actually listed as more dangerous than the Temple was in the last update so... probably not.

Somehow missed that, yeah seems like I'm probably misreading where the risk lies then.

I'll switch over to this for now then. Less inclined to go Conservative on this route but it might still be for the best.

I think the apocryphal curse can't actually proc for the next two weeks since it was listed as part of the rewards for taking the moon temple option. Since we got the 2 arete from it we should have got the mitigation as well.

Fair enough, though a straight proc isn't necessarily the only thing the Curse can do. Off the top of my head: we get a condition in/before the Temple and then when Apocryphal hits it does so by exacerbating that condition into something obnoxious. I don't recall the QM ever saying the challenges it threw at us had to be combat.

I'm curious... of the 7 Arete options offered, which is the one you guys would actually pick in this situation?
Probably either thousand blades or undying vanguard. One lets us kill things better the other keeps the rest of the party from dying.

*To Boldly Go: Taking this option will grant 2 Arete and defray activations of the Apocryphal Curse for two weeks.
This implies it won't do anything at all for the next two weeks.

I shall compile The List!

Evening Sky - Philosopher's Wreath - 7 Arete (2 picks)
Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear + Undying Echo + Undying Vanguard - 7 Arete
Hunger - Pitiless Maw - 7 Arete
A Thousand Cuts - 7 Arete
Iron Curtain - 7 Arete
Azure Moon - 7 Arete

This is every 7 Arete options that we have encountered so far, aside from Evening sky which we picked.

At this junction I'd go with A Thousand Cuts, with Pitiless Maw as my second choice. Access to Forebear's Blade - Ruinous Valor would probably have me reconsider Cuts, and I'd go for Maw first instead. This would require 4 picks, though.

Undying Vanguard would be good if we decided to just leave Letz outside, since it would buff her significantly, but that comes at a heavy price for our immediate power. Better to also leave Gisena outside and handle the Temple ourselves.

Iron Curtain is awesome but the drawback is kinda painful, not to mention we're really lacking in offense at the moment.

While I wouldn't vote for it normally, Pitiless Maw would be pretty good in the current situation. Armor piercing, combat sustain, and we come out of fights in good shape. Thousand Cuts would also be good. Maybe Iron Curtain or Undying Vanguard.

If the Temple has puzzles or other non-combat challenges, Philosopher's Wreath might be good. Azure Moon would take a while to get online but could also be useful depending on what's in the Temple.

EDIT: If we could get Ruinous Valor with Pitiless Maw or Thousand Cuts that'd be great.

Depends... if we're going alone into the Temple, Pitiless Maw as my first choice and Iron Curtain as my second. If we're leaving Letrizia alone, Undying Vanguard. I refuse to abandon My Little Mech-- what if he gets lost?

I think Undying vanguard is probably best since it keeps Gisena relevant against the more dangerous encounters and removes her weakness of being a squishy wizard. It also lets us leave Zea by herself since she'll now be much harder to kill meaning we can take Gisena with us into the dungeon greating increasing our chances of success.

On consideration Valor + Maw seems like a super good combo. I'd go with Zweihander just for character reasons, so it wouldn't be quite as good as it could be, but it's still one hell of an upgrade.

I'm willing to get vanguard, but not unless we have at least 14 Arete when we need to make the picks, as I believe we need at least one offensive boost.

Isn't she buffer than we are?

Hm... Undying Vanguard would be good in that you could take Risky, since Letrizia would be able to fight outside of Verschlengorge with the equivalent Protection of the Evening Sky, high-grade regeneration and massive Constitution! That gives you not only Gisena's utility inside, but also her off-tank ability and boosted stats for you! However, it's probably less raw power than something like Thousand Cuts, though your build isn't the best for Cuts in the first place. If only you had much more Strength...

So what you're saying is take the really scenic route get 4 picks and take ruinous valour and thousand cuts! Then hope we get another 7 arete and take undying vanguard!

Nope we're much tankier than Gisena, it was mentioned as her weakpoint earlier I think.

Yeah, feels like regardless of whatever else we pick we really need to get Ruinous Valor, if it is at all possible.

What I'm hoping for is we go the quick route, roll an interrupt, win without serious complications, then use that spending opportunity to grab a personal boost, then use the second spending opportunity when we get there to boost our companions.

I wish there was a way to force an encounter with something Highly Dangerous without the Epic or instant death risk of Really Scenic.

There's a thought - you could take Philosopher's Wreath as a Sorcerer! It would immediate offer a modest boost to all your stats and the provision of a top-tier Grace, making you considerably more powerful for 8 hours of the day. When faced with unknown challenges, +Int/Wis/Cha is certainly valuable, and the Grace would give you a potent utility or offensive effect (assuming you eschew defensive due to the presence of Evening Sky)

For the record, my gut still says Undying Vanguard. At a certain point, refusing to commit to protecting a strategic resource is committing to its sacrifice. We're not at that point yet, but it's not like we're going to get a warning before somebody more hardcore than Ber decides to gank our girls for dumb reasons.

Hey, I've a question. What distinct magic systems has Hunger actually seen yet, anyway?
