Hahhh, I knew getting that Shield was premature, and that we should've saved for the Greenpelt leather armor instead because it's compatible with any build we wanted to go with. Now there's suggestions for just selling it back after carrying it around for days without even getting to use it... Ok, let's see if we can consolidate what we have to work with before suffering the no doubt steep price depreciation that would result from that kind of buy back. At the least, we still want it to deal with the Monstrous Corns' explosive death attack.
Now, we were told that John couldn't dual wield with the shield yet because he wasn't skilled enough to multitask with the dagger, shield, and evasion all at the same time, so my estimate is that he'd be able to start doing that once he's at least Beginner level in all the component skills. Since we now have Beginner Evasion and Dagger Mastery, we just need to get Beginner Shield Mastery to use them together.
However, if we want to focus on the dagger as our primary weapon, then keeping the kite shield probably isn't the best idea. Even though we don't know if this has any mechanical effect, the dagger's minimum length doesn't seem like it would mesh well with reaching out to attack past our more bulky shield's guard. It's really more of a Stealth and Evasion style weapon, at best you could use it with a buckler for parrying in a straight fight.
But since I don't want to use the dagger as our primary weapon, and would prefer to keep it as our holdout and sneak attack weapon, that leaves other options open (funnily enough, having the shield stowed on our back helps protect us from getting Backstabbed ourselves). Because even though we still haven't identified the dagger's damage value, it's probably lower than every other iron weapon of the same tier (although I'm not sure how the Weapon Speed value that just showed itself balances that out). We just discovered our first technique in the Backstab, so we could decide to pick a weapon that's compatible with it. This rules out blunt weapons and slashing-only weapons like axes. I'm pretty sure that the Short Sword and Short Spear can use Backstab, but I'm not nearly as certain about the Long Sword or regular sized Spear.
Of course, we don't
have to restrict our build to the first technique we figured out from a single sparring session. I'm sure we could discover equivalent techniques for other weapon types (Chopping an enemy's limb to "debuff" them with an Axe? Covering distance with a Spear Charge to knock over or impale?). Eh, we still need to see what's available at Porcelain before deciding anything.
