Seems to me like a way to go, also actually has Velvet doing things rather then leaving her to loaf around...
Actually...
We should see if/how Velvet interacts with other Killer Rabbits now that she's been Dominated. Can other monsters tell/care? Could she say, turn into some sort of like, Vicious Rabbit Gangboss or something? Because that'd be neat to put together.

Limits of Dominate Writing, and Preparing to Spar

You spend a few minutes combing the shelves before you hunt down a book titled "How not to stab yourself - A Treatise on basic dagger usage" which you quickly take the chance to begin copying. It takes a lot of effort to pick out what sections of the book seem most important, avoiding what seem like slightly more advanced techniques for the simplest looking methods. Words quickly scribbled onto the blank page in an orderly, and small script in the hopes of packing as much information onto one sheet as possible.

Sadly, that goal ends in failure as you end up using two whole pages to copy down even the bare minimum of relevant info given just how much information the book seems to go over. With that finished you stow away the book before turning to the still drying pages in front of you uncertainly, stacking them atop each other gently before reaching your hand out to touch them.

Calling for your power, you hear a gentle hum before faint golden light pours from your hand to envelop the sheet of paper on top. In moments the words rapidly disappear, flowing towards your hand before being consumed by the golden light. By the time it's done you have a blank paper and another with half the contents you had hoped to Dominate on it, sitting there in stark defiance.

Muttering, you move to put away the sheets of paper as well as the book you'd picked up.

"Hmm, it would seem there is some form of restriction about what can be dominated with my power, but how does it function? I can feel the knowledge about how to use a dagger in my head now, but it seems... half assed? Like something is missing."

---

With that completed you take your leave of the Library and head for the Guild Training Hall to get in some practice while you have the know how to wield your dagger. When you enter the Training Hall you find it far more packed than before, a dozen sparring matches and who knows how many other practicing their skills on targets, dummies, or the golems the Guild has running everything here.

When a golem assistant approaches you pull out your Guild Card and register for self training on an available field, the golem leading you over to a small arena lowered into the floor off in the corner. It stares at you for a moment before a blue screen appears in front of you with a list of options...

Sparring Options

Health: Perfect

Status Effects: None

Dominate Writing - Dagger Mastery Basics, Incomplete - Using a copy of some of the contents found within a treatise on dagger usage as your target you have gained a rudimentary, but incomplete knowledge of wielding one in combat. While wielding a dagger in battle you will be far more effective than before, but may at times find it useless as well. +4 to attack rolls when wielding a dagger, provides half the bonus when fighting against an opponent with a combat skill higher than Beginner.
Lasts until end of the day.

Estimated Time of Day: Early Morning last you remember

Heroic Legacy Points: 0

Level:
2
Experience: 198/200 [27 Surplus Experience]

Titles:

They Who Seek the Crown (Level One, 14/25) - A title earned by gaining the blessing of the God of War in a chance encounter with his will. It is a boon granted to those who seek to become like Lords, towering above the world with every action and word capable of bringing great waves of change. Currently it is weak and only grants you the power of Domination, but if you grow stronger and perform in a way that meshes with this Boon then perhaps its strength can grow.

Heroes can be Thieves Right? - In the name of Heroism you stole classified information from the Church of War without being caught. Now no innocent souls shall be ended with this dangerous knife, but ... yours might be if you mess up? Slightly increased chance of learning stealth and thievery related skills until discovered, lost if the Sealed Scroll is destroyed.

Ethical Scholar - A scholar's duty is that of facts, numbers, honesty, and boundaries. You have a devotion to the work of the written word that few would follow in the face of potential benefits. You seek simply to perform your work to the best of your ability and stand within the morals of your scholar code, even find yourself compelled to do so. Established personal Scholarly Code, sticking to it makes your work easier and better while going against it more difficult and with worse results.
  • Scholar Code I - No work is better than hasty work. {Provides +2 to scholarly rolls when you take your time, take -2 to scholarly rolls when you attempt to work with haste.}
  • Scholar Code II - Provide the facts to those that hire you, nothing more and nothing less. {Provides 2 bonus experience when followed, lose 2 experience when ignored.}
  • Scholar Code III - Judgement is the employer's job. {Provides 2 bonus experience when followed, lose 2 experience when ignored.}
  • Scholar Code IV - There is satisfaction in learning that which is known and that which is not. {Provides 2 bonus experience when learning new knowledge skills and advancing skill ranks.}

Iron Clad Mind - Your will is strengthened considerably under the guidance of the Spirit as if your mind has created the foundations of a fortress around it. With it's backing you are capable of putting up greater resistance against mental influences.

Forbidden Scholar - You are more likely to notice lore and knowledge regarding those topics considered forbidden to the general populace. Of course, your affinity for these subjects does not create that knowledge where none exists.

Maybe we'll make a friend! We've been very isolated, weird receptionists aside.

[X] Spar with a Golem Assistant, 20 GP.

While sparring against a similarly ranked Adventurer is free, I'm worried that it might also be pretty dangerous. The MC has never fought with a dagger before, and he would presumably be fighting against another Adventurer with a live weapon who might not know how to use it. Don't they say something about how experts are afraid to fight against novices because novices are unpredictable? I can't remember the exact saying.

I'm hoping that the golem assistant will have some sort of safety precaution in place, and 20 GP isn't that much.

We finally gained some XP for Dominate Writing! I guess we needed to try something new so the skinning and trapping information probably won't get us any XP for the skill. Unfortunately, we're now down to 1 piece of paper.

... maybe we should try doing sometihng like this again except write on both sides of a single piece of paper rather than on two separate sheets
that seems like it might have a better chance of working since it would technically be part of a whole item and if not, then it would give more insight as to the limits of the technique

You already had, but there was a lot of information to put down so it just wouldn't fit on a single page even when it was just the sections John thought most important.

Dominate Experiments pt. 74:

Did it respond to multiple pages? Did it respond to amount of info or words? Can we translate words into symbols like hieroglyphics or something, allowing a wealth of info on a single page each?

I'm thinking that the Golem Assistants would be far more useful training companions as they'd have an actual understanding of how to teach and be a good training partner. Similarly ranked adventuerers - aka noobs - wouldn't have the proper experience with sparring in safe ways compared to the Golems created for that purpose.

Guys, why are you spending GP on a Golem when it's not necessary? A Golem is an automaton, not an instructor, it's not going to give us advice or teach us anything itself, that's what paying for lessons are for. If you're worried about injuries when sparring with a stranger, then just spar with Velvet. She can limit herself to tackling instead of biting, and we can keep our dagger sheathed. We need to be frugal with our resources if we're going to save up for the good lessons.

A Golem is a relatively cheap expense to ensure we have proper training, instead of adding handicaps on top of our existing experience issues, is the way I see it.

I'd think that the Golem instructor and a live dagger would have the MC learning more than attacking a small, somewhat fragile minion. The MC would have to keep bending down to attack and would have to try dodging something around his feet.

I want the MC to learn the skill now so that he doesn't have to pay for the Dagger Use, Beginner class (75 GP) and can try the Monstrous Corn quest (the chance to earn money and GP).

How is sparring with Velvet inferior to sparring with a Golem? They're just there as a default option for people who can't find anyone else to spar with. There's no given indication that the sparring with the Golems would somehow give us more Dagger skill experience, you're spending unnecessary GP on a guess. Hell, learning how to fight something like Velvet is more relevant combat experience than a humanoid opponent, since quadrupedal Monsters are the most common enemy type in the area (except the Monstrous Corn, but they're the weakest and not worthy of specializing against).

Not to mention that it gives Velvet more fight experience at the same time, which is just gravy.

Our dagger experience is half formed because of only half of it being copied. As a result, assuming the most likely scenario, we probably have knowledge in dagger fighting humanoid opponents with dagger unsheathed.

The difference here is whether we flesh out that faux experience with real experience or whether we accept the faux experience and try something new.

I dont think either choice would be a waste, with that in mind. Money is cheap here, fortunately, so that's not as big a deal considering we have the rest of the day to make it back.

Our dagger experience being half formed is irrelevant to whether we finish practicing against Velvet or a Golem. John only copied down the most general and basic dagger information, rightfully staying away from any advanced techniques for now. It'd be nonsensical for the information he gathered to only be focused on humanoid opponents, and not somehow applicable to fighting Monsters. It's Beginner level dagger wielding, it's not going to be much more complicated than "stick 'em with the pointy end". Not to mention that we haven't seen anything about weapon skills being broken down into enemy type specialties in the Quest mechanics so far, that's a ridiculous amount of granularity. So if both sparring partners are equally serviceable, then pick the one that's free instead of the one that isn't.

No, spending points or money for no real benefit that we know of on speculation is a waste. John isn't nearly so rich as to throw away resources for nothing, and he'll never get that rich if he does. We're trying to save up for Meditation lessons so we can learn magic later, don't make that take longer unless there's a concrete benefit in exchange.

I'm not going to vote for it because I want meditation, but there is a clear advantage to teaming up against a training dummy, and that's that we get to practice our teamwork. Both of us against an opponent is the scenario of the exam, I suspect.

Speculation?

Our dagger experience being half formed is irrelevant to whether we finish practicing against Velvet or a Golem.

We dont know this.

Or if the gap in his knowledge is Monster based or not, since according to recent clarification, the two pages were double-sided and crammed in there. We dominated a single physical page, the first, not the entire other crammed text, which could contain anything that we are currently missing.

Regardless, we wont end up fighting against Velvet, but with her, so why not get in the practice ahead of time?

The thing is I DON'T think both sparring partners are equally serviceable. John can't go all out against his minion. Even if the dagger is sheathed, he'd likely be reluctant to hurt her, and he's only miming stabs, not actually trying to stab anything. Meanwhile, Velvet isn't allowed to bite John so she's not going all out either.

They CAN go all out against a golem because (1) the Guild has the resources and reason to make sturdy training aids & (2) I doubt they're strong enough to actually hurt the golem anyway. If they go all out, they progress more in their fighting skills and can use those fighting skills to go on the Monstrous Corn quest and earn money and GP.

While I don't want to spend GP and money unnecessarily, it feels like cutting corners here would hurt us in the long run. The MC needs to be able to fight in order to do well on the combat test of the Advancement Exam. Let's not handicap John or Velvet.

teamwork vs. fighting each other. spending GP or not on this...Hrrrm.
Personally? I'm slightly in favor of fighting each other actually, John's so starved for experience that anything I think will work out at least decently, even if we'd perhaps be best suited to asking that Archer for tips/training, on the idea that she's both interested in us and likely experienced/skilled enough to counter-balance her focal point being Archery versus our currently Melee&Minion 'style'.
As for Velvet? Okay so it won't be the same thing as learning to fight WITH us, but I fighting John should be informative for her, if for no other reason then teaching her our tells so she can respond to them independently of us having to use our Domination to 'command' her constantly in a fight, which I suspect would be a poor idea in the long run.
...
Simply put, sparring with Velvet will do more to make John and Velvet individual combatants. Fighting a Golem will make them more team-fighters. Given the way this world appears to work, I think individual development is a better plan-we CAN learn team-tactics/formations, but after a point I imagine such a plan will cap out/be limited more by individual power (three perfectly co-ordinated humans can still lose to one guy if he's too tough for them to hurt or too fast for them to catch!) And I think we're still in the phase that we need to learn how to stand on our own before we can start to think of things like fighting together.

I actually think that sparring against the golem would make them better individual combatants than trying to fight against each other. After all, they can't go all out against each other. It also wouldn't hurt to learn a little bit of teamwork here before one of them jumps into the other one's way during an actual fight.

I'm not convinced that the receptionist will be willing to teach the MC how to fight.
It's thrilling really, watching people with seemingly completely unrelated skill sets create their own path to be an Adventurer. I really want to see what you end up becoming Mister Scholar, will you stick to and use what you know to make something unique or just take up the easy road and learn to fight like all the rest do?

I'm really hoping to take the Monstrous Corn quest because it should give the MC some actual combat experience AND let him test out his shield. After all, he has to deal with the exploding mana-hardened kernels somehow, and it would probably be difficult to dodge all of them. He could also try fighting with the hand-axe, but it might tire him out faster. He just has to get enough practice with the dagger first to actually be able to go on the quest.

Speculation?

We dont know this.

Or if the gap in his knowledge is Monster based or not, since according to recent clarification, the two pages were double-sided and crammed in there.
Your speculation is on there being any kind of "Monster based" vs "Humanoid based" distinction in the introductory dagger knowledge at all. That's just something proposed without any actual evidence in the narration to support it. You don't know if sparring against the Golem will actually get us anything more than sparring against Velvet, anymore than I know if it won't. So if we're all just guessing about differences in the results, then the only provable comparison between the two options is that one is free and the other isn't.

I could easily argue that learning to be precise and controlled is more important for fighting with a dagger than putting your full strength and ferocity into it.

But you're talking as though this one little distinction in a single practice session is going to affect our long term fighting capability or decide whether we'll fail the test. Not going all out in trying to do as much damage to our sparring opponent as possible isn't going to cripple our long term capabilities. We just need to get enough basic dagger skill to get through the Exam, which the Receptionist already expected us to be able to pass before we made any preparations and were still injured. All of our real development in combat experience, including our teamwork with Velvet, is going to come later from real fights against minor Monsters and maybe actual lessons. And again, we don't actually know if there's any distinction in experience between the options of sparring with Velvet or the Golem, so shelling out extra money for such a minor benefit that we don't even know is a thing, that will be made irrelevant by future combat experience, to pass a test we can probably already pass anyway, really doesn't seem worth it.
