Fear Cuts Deeper Than Swords: A Song of Ice and Fire/D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder Quest

Remember everyone, voting ends at midnight MST (that's 2:00 EST for folks on the East Coast). I will have the first post up sometime Saturday.

Others can come up plans of their own until then; I'm perfectly willing to use plan TNE, I just hope it has competition so we can say it wasn't forced upon the thread.
Too bad I suck at making characters, or everyone'd be voting for my idea!

[:V] Plan Opposition
-[:V] Plan TNE but with all points into Strength and Endurance. Who needs Charisma?

I'm okay with voting for Chivalrous Courtesy, Grudge Keeper and Haunted as they all work with regards to Domeric's Character and History/future.

What Feats would you take for all three?

And with that, times up for the initial build vote! Looks like Plan TNE won with a landslide, I will update the character sheet in the beginning post to reflect that.

Vote tally, for the sake of having a record

Omake.

Days of Wind and Fleetness of Growth.

Young Domeric stared in Awe at the huge Stallion his Aunt Barbery raced across the fields upon.

His own mount beneath him was further behind her, it still was a somewhat young animal, just reaching it's adulthood and as such, it was rather easily distracted in comparison to his Aunt's more seasoned steed, his own mount however was an equine more than full of vim and vigour.

A look of determination crossed his face as he altered his posture to match that of his aunt, leaning forwards eagerly into an almost crouch as he urged the Horse to go faster!

"Faster Binky! We can catch up most definitely!"

The long grass fell away beneath them as it blurred in his vision, Binky picking up speed and pulling alongside his Aunt and her own mount, as she looked to him with a warm smile of fondness and pride at his progress.

"You were born to it young Domeric!" She called out to him excitedly as she pulled ahead once more.

"Ryswell by blood if not by name!" She called out with laughter.

Domeric smiled a shy smile, pleased at their race, while chasing after his aunt as she surged away to the left, before she and her Stallion leaped up and over a dry stoned wall and into another field.

Domeric gasped in surprise, gaining a look of jubilation as he tightened his legs upon Binky, before shouting out with a cry of encouragement, flicking his reins and urging Binky to follow his Aunt over the wall!

Suddenly they were in the air!

The Sky felt as if it was almost welcoming Domeric and Binky into it's heavenly realm!

Sadly all too soon, their time of flight was over and their leaping arc ended with the thudding impact of the earth welcoming them both back to it's own demesne.

Domeric wanted to fly again, but for now they were faster than before, so it could almost be like flying on each additional wall they jumped in pursuit of his Aunt, both man and beast united in the goal of outracing his Aunt and her own loyal steed.

The former Ryswell Lady turned back in her saddle up ahead of him and waved at him in a friendly taunt to keep up.

He grinned in joy and caught up post haste, Aunt and Nephew weaving around each other across the terrain as they raced the wind!

Binky was years ago entrusted to Domeric when he was but a child and the Horse just a young Colt not long born into the world. His Aunt did this when he was first sent to the Dustin's as her Page.

She was less warm back then, rather brisk and terse in her dealings with him, she would often make high demands of him, her expectations low, but not cruel.

Domeric found the studying and tasks difficult but not unrewarding.

Over time she had warmed to him gradually, revealing that she sought to test his mettle and she had been pleasantly surprised by his diligence. For Domeric had endeavoured to read all that he could lay hands upon to find out all he could about Equestrianism, both taking it upon himself to raid the Dustin Library as well as bothering the Stable Master and Stable Hands until they caved in to his pleas for aid to help him train and saddle the Colt.

Soon he was mucking out Stalls, assisting with many other tasks regarding both the stables and the grazing Ryswell Herds on Dustin Lands.

Domeric found himself exhausted from both the Physicality and the more academic pursuits such as the Stud Records and the Finances.

The Heraldry and Histories of Lordly Houses were also crammed into his head, all under the instructions of his Aunt, from her he also learned of some of the many Histories, Legends and Myths of the North.

He found himself fascinated by the Fantastical things that he read or was told by his Aunt, her Servants and Bannermen, because of course much of the Past of the North still persisted more in oral tellings, those of the Bardic tradition passing them on through entertainment rather than that of the more dry written format that was less accessible to the Peasantry.

Domeric learned many Stories and Songs as well as began his dabblings into music and the arts of the minstrel, aided by many Bards that passed through Ryswell aad Dustin Lands over the Years in his service there.

Despite the multitude of fouler tasks like mucking out the Stalls of the Stables, Domeric was swiftly enraptured by his Colt from the beginning and in his youthful state, he named the Colt with the moniker of Binky.

Horses in general, became something of a shared passion that his Aunt shared with him in equal fervour and which brought them both closer as family.

Days like this where he could bond with his Steed and spending time with his Aunt were his favourites, far more then any of his other myriad Page duties.

The Wind in his Hair, the Drumbeat of Hooves upon the Ground, the sheer freedom and joy of speed, a persistent draw that would never leave his heart!

Over time their pace slowed as they returned to his Aunt's Home and Hold, the Sun slowly proceeding to go down off in the distance, the evening falling and the lingering warmth in the air departing.

"It will not be long now until you depart for your Squiring in the Vale now young Domeric..." Lady Ryswell said with a sigh as they both relinquished their Horses to the care of Ralph the Stable Master.

Domeric nodded excitedly in the affirmative.

Barbrey smiled and drew him close to her in a warm embrace.

"Soon you will be much too big to embrace like this my Nephew...." She sighed in fondness and exasperation.

"I think you know that I have long planned to gift you with Binky, but why you picked such a name I will never know...." She exclaimed in feigned exasperation that drew a chuckle from him.

I'm not super happy with it but after it got deleted and eaten 3+ times I have no more will or energy to do it again.

Hope it's not too awful anyway.....

Items:
Masterwork Greatsword
Scale Mail
Morningstar
Composite Longbow (+1 STR modifier)
Arrows (20)
Light Horse (Combat Trained)
Military Saddle
Saddlebags
Bit and Bridle
Small Harp
I'd change this to:
Mwk Falchion - It's a lighter sword for his average STR score, and theoretically should work better from horseback than GS due its shape.
Fullplate - As discussed
Composite Longbow (+2) w/ 20 arrows
Kuhkri - back up knife
Heavy Warhorse w/ military saddle
-- Flail, Lance and Heavy Wooden Shield on the horse
Misc. on saddlebags
Small harp

The Flail is to use on foot with the shield if need be.

Heavy Warhorse w/ military saddle

IMO, it's a bit odd to go with a Falchion and a Kuhkri. If he's found something odd for sale down in the market, that's one thing, but for both of his main weapons to be non-standard is a bit too peculiar for a starting character in Westeros.

Bronn carries a Kuhkri around and doesn't raise any eyebrows, tho.

One of his flaws is disdaining simple weapons, so picking up some fancier stuff even for back up isn unreasonable. It's his backup anyway, and he should have a flail (can't have a made or morningstar, those are Simple), shield and Lance on the horse.

A throwing axe, then?

I'm just saying that I can see Domeric using one or the other, a Falchion as his main weapon or a Kuhkri as his off weapon. For him to start at level one using both is just weird to me, given the cultural inertia of Westeros and the relative lack of other influences in the area.

It's easily something that can develop as he travels and adventures.

Shortsword - back up "knife"

This then? Falchion for slashing, shortsword for piercing and light flail for bludgeoning.

Doesn't the falchion do the most damage or something for a basic starting weapon?
No?

It's 2d4 damage, which isn't great dice for a two hander, but the appeal is in the wide crit range of 18-20. It's good for chopping off heads.

Greatsword does 2d6 with 19-20 crit.

Ultimately, it's a nicer pick for someone that can add a lot of flat damage to an attack, like with Smite Evil, as that gets multiplied on a crit. Someone that relies on, say, Vital Strike would be better off with a Greatsword or Greataxe.

Those altered weapons sound fine to me; I'll go ahead and include them. Sheet updated.

Also, @TheOmnimercurial , good work on the omake, I liked it! A nice reminder of simpler times for Domeric. I'll add the extra point in Knowledge: Nobility.

I think I got the character sheet correct? Please let me know if I missed anything, @TotallyNotEvil .

HP: 12
AC: 19 (10 without armor), -6 armor check penalty for DEX skills and 35% ASF
HP is only 10: 8 from d8, +2 CON.
AC: 18 (10 - 1 DEX + 9 fullplate), touch 9, flatfooted 18, ACP -6 (STR and DEX skills)

We have a Shield for +2 AC too, but only gets used with flail or Lance or shortsword.
Attack: +3 (1 BAB, 2 STR) with Light Flail, +3 (1 BAB, 2 STR, 1 Masterwork) with Falchion, Ranged +0 (1 BAB, -1 DEX)
Attack with Falchion is +4.
Damage: 2d4+1 (Masterwork Falchion), 1d8 (light flail), 1d6 (shortsword), 1d8 (Composite Longbow)
Damage with falchion is 2d4+3, 1d8+2 for Flail (becomes +3 if two-handing) and Bow, 1d6+2 for shortsword.
PF Power Attack means -1 to hit, +2 damage one-handed, +3 damage two-handed, but we can only take -1, and then another -1 for every 4 BAB (so max -6 to hit for +12/+18 damage at lv 20).

So our best hit is Falchion +3 (2d4+6/18-20 x2).
Strength: 14 + 0 = 16 (+2)
Bonus is right, total isn't.
Skills:
Diplomacy: 8 = +5 (CHA), 1 rank, 2 background bonus
Handle Animal: 6 = +5 (CHA), 1 free background rank
Knowledge (Arcana): 2 = +1 (INT), 1 rank.
Knowledge (History): 3 = +1 (INT), 1 rank, 1 background bonus
Knowledge (Nobility): 1 = +1 (INT) not trained
Knowledge (Religion): 2 = +1 (INT), 1 rank
Perform (Strings): 6 = +5 (CHA), 1 rank
Ride: 2 = +1 (DEX), 1 rank
Sense Motive: 1 = 2 ranks, -1 (Wisdom)
Most of these are class skills. In PF, you don't gain the x4 skill points on first level, and neither do cross class skills cost 2 points or have a lower cap. Instead, you receive a +3 bonus if you have at least one rank with a skill that is in-class, and the max rank is equal to your HD. Cunningly, this means the values from 3.5 and PF largely track, as you'd put 4 ranks in 3.5 and put 1 rank with a +3 bonus in PF.

Concentration is a CL + Casting stat check as well, not a skill. So 1d20+8 for us (1 Cal + 5 CHA + 2 Focused Mind).

So:
Diplomacy: 1 + 5 (CHA) + 3 (class) +2 (background) = +11
Handle Animal: 1 (bonus) + 5 (CHA) + 3 (class) = +9
Knowledge (Arcana): 1 + 1 (INT) + 3 (class) = +5
Knowledge (History): 1 (bonus) + 1 (INT) + 3 (class) = +5
Knowledge (Nobility): 1 (bonus) + 1 (INT) + 3 (class) + 2 (Noble Scion) = +7
Knowledge (Religion): 1 + 1 (INT) + 3 (Class) = +5
Perform (Strings): 1 (bonus) + 5 (CHA) = +6
Ride: 1 - 1 (Dex) + 3 (class) = +3
Sense Motive: 1 - 1 (Wis) + 3 (class) = +3

Rank + stat + class skill bonus + misc. Simple and clear, ya? Scion of War, aka Noble Scion, makes Nobility a class skill and gives +2 to it, fittingly enough.

I don't think he needs that background bonus to Diplo :V

If you want to change it to a bonus rank, like the others, then we can get +1 HP from favored class.

We theoretically have three Orionsons (infinite cantrips) and three first level spells, but I understand if these aren't readily available yet. I suggest Light, Detect Magic and Stabilize for Orisons, and Bless, Sun Metal and Cure Light Wounds for the spells.

Nice, thematic and effective.

I'm not sure bless is worth it. Maybe we could load out with Honeyed Tongue instead so we have some kind of utility
